thinking about how all three of the kingships jon stands to inherit are legacies of love - jon's ability to understand the free folk as human and worth saving is an act of love and they love him and essentially make him king beyond the wall in return. robb loves and trusts his brother and is confident in jon's love and loyalty in return, even fresh from theon's betrayal, so he names him his heir to the north. despite the ambiguity of the affair, grrm seems to suggest rhaegar truly loved lyanna and that would make jon, literally, their love child - illegitimate or not, his existence and potential claim to the iron throne is because "prince rhaegar loved his lady lyanna" and he lives because lyanna loved him and ned loved lyanna.
do you see it? around jon snow, more important than any royal blood or legitimacy, is a nexus of love?

I'm sorry but it's so funny to me seeing some green stans complaining about the show making Rhaenyra being involved in the war and battles and giving her "bad b1tch scenes on her dragon" because "it wasn't in the book so it's not canon" but I didn't see them complaining when they make Helaena a dreamer or Aemond a victim of bulling (staining the image of the Velaryon's boys in the process, btw) or when they make Alicent younger and a victim or Luke's m*rder being an accident. So according to their logic that isn't canon as well? Or this changes are only canon when it's convenient to them?
Make it make sense!

The question is specifically for the book only.
The question is not "who deserves the Iron Throne?" or "who would be the best ruler?"
Feel free to (politely) explain your reasoning in the comments and/or tags!

I swear to god the team black stans are gonna go wild/or silent when rhaenyra sits on the iron throne only to get more cuts than aerys and her father.
What are they gonna say, that the iron throne is sexist? Is the inanimate iron chair suppressing rhaenyras rights?
In all serious tho it would start cutting when she starts torturing people and taxing the smallfolk.
Like i fully believe aegon i's ghost is there and just living there as a spirit just to cut his desendants and as a warning to the people that the ruler is going too far.

I'd love to see your take on Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya if you've not done them already?
Tumblr media
Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys spend the evening in their pajamas planning the conquest of Westeros.
Maybe I'm cheating, but there are so many cool fanarts featuring these three sexy conquerors in heroic poses that I felt like doing something silly out of spite!

There's something which bothers me about asoiaf.
The night's watch, we've heard, was established after the long night, about 8000 years ago. Jon is (supposedly) the 998th Lord Commander, which approximately tracks.
We're led to believe that the vows have not changed at all during this time. I ask you to find the oldest book you can. For me, in the UK, that's probably Shakespeare, who was writing late 1500s/early 1600s. I have an English degree and i struggle with some of the language. Words fall in and out of fashion, understanding of concepts like, hm, marriage, change over time (Measure for Measure, I'm looking at you), and invasions will impact linguistics.
Therefore, a vow written by Shakespeare 500-ish years ago would have totally different connotations to a contemporary person vs a modern one, and someone with little/no formal education (like most of the nights' watch) probably wouldn't understand most of it. And that's 500 years! The nights' watch vow is 8000 years old! If someone handed me a peice of writing from 8000 years ago, which is technically the stone age, i wouldn't even know if I was holding it the right way up. Those vows aren't just dated: they're complete jibberish.
To add to this: Westerosi history generally seems pretty strange. We're supposed to understand that the maesters carefully destroyed lots of information about dragons, which helped contribute to their extinction. Yet, somehow, Asha Greyjoy knows about Kingsmoots, when the last one happened 5000 years ago? Again, a UK based example: stonehenge is about 5000 years old. Nobody knows what it's for. There are theories, there are people who worship there, but mostly it's a bunch of cool rocks. So it doesn't make sense that all of the information about dragons is lost over about 200 years from the Dance to Dany asking her handmaidens for info, but Asha, who comes from a culture where learning and reading aren't exactly celebrated, suddenly has access to all of this ancient information.
We do, of course, love, respect and stan one (1) Rodrick the Reader for his contributions to Asha's education and understanding of history, but one person isn't enough to keep history/culture/customs alive for 5000 years.

RHAENYRA ON THE IRON THRONE Artwork by Hristo Chukov
Rhaenyra mounted the Iron Throne, stern and uncompromising in her armor as every person the castle was brought before her and made to kneel, pleading for her mercy and swearing their fealty. Septon Eustace would later claim that Rhaenyra left the hall with bleeding cuts on her legs and palms, evidence of the Iron Throne’s rejection.

My Queen
Tumblr media
Ship: Fem!reader x Robb Stark
Desc: the new Targaryen Queen replaces the evil queen Cersei Lannister. Her White Wolf gushes over her.
Notes: so this was a request but I fucked up and lost it lol. Also not my favorite, it's very short, but I'm really excited to write for Robb. Also idk shit about the Targaryen house, I'm better suited for the Ironborn and the Starks but I still tried. Also dont know about about the iron throne and I have yet to read asoiaf. Sorry.
Warnings: implied violence, not prof read.
(Y/n) didnt think she would make it this far. Hell, she didnt even think she would make it half way. It didnt seem real, standing infront of the long sout after goal. How could something so many people died for just be sitting right in front of her.
She steped forward, reaching out and feeling the throne. It was cool, cold, stone cold. She ran her finger across the dull edge of one of the swords, only stopping for a moment at the broken chips.
(Y/n) remembered when she was young, growing up with her siblings Danni and Viserys. She learned more about the throne then her siblings. She lerned about the importance of each and every one of them. She even knew some of them by name.
"The guards are taken care of." A voice, one of comfort, snapped (y/n) out of her thoughts.
"Thank you." The words were simple but they got the point across.
"It's so... so..." (y/n) smiled, looking over her shoulder. "It dosnt feel real."
"I was just thinking that." Her finger traced one of the carvings in a sword. "Come here, my wolf." (Y/n) held out her hand.
A callused hand intertwined (y/n)'s.
"Do you remember all the storys I've told you about the iron throne?" (Y/n)  asked, she felt Robb's thumb rubbing over the back of her hand.
"How could I forget? You tell me a new one every night." She could feel Robbs apprehensiveness.
"Here." (Y/n)  led Robb closer to the throne, moving his hand closer to the throne. "This one, the one with the engravings, this one has always been my favorite."
She led Robb's hand across the engraving. "Its special."
Robb slowly but surely let (Y/n) lead him. He glanced over at (y/n), the delicate yet dangerous look in her eye only made his heart throb more.
"Theres no real meaning to it. No important warrior. Its just...  pretty."
"Pretty." Robb repeated, not even looking at the sword anymore.
(Y/n) looked up from the sword, letting out a soft giggle. "You arnt even looking at the sword."
Robb's smile was soft, he was growing in a beard. It suited his face well but (y/n) was ready for her cleaned up prince back.
"My darling and Queen." Robb hummed, taking her other hand. "You are stunning tonight."
"You are so..." (y/n) huffed. Her head was all messed up, sweaty and worn out. Fighting a war, especially in the capital, was impossibly hard. She wasnt one to just stand back and let her men fight for her.
"Please, you deserve a rest." Robb led (y/n) to the throne.
(Y/n) sat back, leaning in to the throne. It wasnt exactly comfortable but it was powerful. It felt right. It felt like home. The hall was home and this throne was home. Her life and goal.
But nothing was as important as her husband.
"You look perfect." Robb kneeled in front of (y/n). He took his sword out of his sheath, placing it infront of her feet.
"My Queen. My lovey Queen. I am but your humble servant." Robb poured his heart out, words coming out before he could think them over. "Please let me and my men serve you."
"Oh my white wolf." (Y/n) hummed, pulling Robb closer to her. "You are more then a servant." (Y/n) stood up, holding Robbs face. "You are my prince and my knight."
Robbs hands found there way to (y/n)'s waist.
"My queen."

The Iron Throne in the books is an enormous thing that towers over the throne room, quite deliberately, because Aegon Targaryen who built the Iron Throne wanted that physical dimension… The beaten melted swords and himself perched high above the head of anyone who had to come before him!
- George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones S3E7 Commentary (2014)
On the A Dance With Dragons cover, I put Daenerys at the top of the stairs of the meereenese pyramid. George told me that Daenerys wants equality for everyone, she wants to be at the same level as her people, so I had her climb down to keep it consistent.

Note
So, according to the screenshots you posted of the notes found in the Iron Throne, the man whose parents sold him to the devil conducts experiments to see if other parents would choose to die to prevent their children from being tortured.
Yeah. I sat there and stared at that particular note from the Iron Throne for a LONG time. There is an obsession here, without any doubt. He modifies tadpoles to make his parents say they are proud of him and love him and support him, in a strange mockery of the experiments he did atop the Iron Throne, echoing the reactions of parents who would sacrifice everything for their child rather than selling their child for a pittance.
I wonder how many people he saw, coming through the House of Hope as he was growing up, who sold their soul for massive changes to their life, or sold their soul to benefit and save others, a sacrifice made willingly. There were so many wandering through those halls, and likely were so many more over the years. It probably ate at him, every time, and he was likely reminded constantly that his parents were willing to sell him to resolve a minor debt, how low their bar was, how selfish, how little they cared for him, and how happy they were living on without him, as though he had never existed.
What I really need to do is gather my thoughts on this and make a proper post, with examples from multiple locations. Right now I'm still scattered and shocked.

The Kingslaying
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The Kingslayer. The false knight who profaned his blade with the blood of the king he had sworn to defend."
A rather gruesome little diorama for this, our spookiest of months! I've said before how much I love all things Robert's Rebellion, and Jaime's kingslaying is right up there. I think it's a fantastic aspect of GRRM's writing that we're told outright at his first appearance that he's "the kingslayer", and write that off as 'well he must just be sneaky and treacherous as all Lannisters are", and it's only two books later you learn he had complex, nuanced, straight-up heroic reasons for doing it. The heady mix of seige, betrayal, potential patricide, actual regicide, and mass human sacrifice to achieve twisted apotheosis into draconic godhead... it feels like 6 different Greek tragedies crashed headlong into one another, and seeing it all though a haze of steam, hormones, and septic delirium is just... *chefs kiss*.
This diorama was actually pretty thrown together compared to my usual standards. My ASOIAF minis are from a war game, so they need to come up with a lot of distinct units for multiple armies, and the books being pretty low fantasy only really give "late medieval man-at-arms" or "conscripted peasant levy". As such, you get some fairly weird and wonderful units, such as every Baratheon soldier having Robert-style warhammers, or in this case a whole unit in Jaime's lion helmet. For me, this translates to a lot of alternative Jaimes.
I am a bit phobic with Jaime, as I once had to swap his hands very last minute, luckily here he's young and straightforwardly right handed. I don't think the close up is at quite the right angle, but you can see his green eyes under the visor, I'm pretty happy that they look quite frightened/panicked. I added the cloak as well, got to have that iconic "It was that white cloak that soiled me, not the other way around" vibe. This is also the first time I've given him his oft-mentioned gilded sword, I love the blood on it forming the Lannister colours.
Talking of the blood... yes, it's a lot. In my defence, it's actually semi transparent in a way that doesn't show well in photos, but does make it marginally less intense. I also know Jaime actually pulled Aerys up and slit his throat, but I had a hard enough time posing these figures, i thought that would be beyond me. I also like the literal nature of stabbing him in the back, and Mark Addy's delivery of "What of Aerys Targaryen? What did the Mad King say when you stabbed him in the back" is burned into my memory.
Aerys himself is a random wizard miniature I had kicking about, I had to do quite a bit of resculpting to get him right. He has the scabs on his hand, but the Howard Hughes fingernails were beyond my sculpting skills. I made the falling crown myself, again, seven tiny dragons felt a bit ambitious.

"I remember the first time my father took me to court, Robert had to hold my hand. I could not have been older than four, which would have made him five or six. We agreed afterward that the king had been as noble as the dragons were fearsome." Stannis snorted. "Years later, our father told us that Aerys had cut himself on the throne that morning, so his Hand had taken his place. It was Tywin Lannister who'd so impressed us."
