from Isobel’s perspective the Invasion is so funny. You think a girl is cute so you invite her to do a photoshoot while her weird friends visit your uncle for some reason. Then when they take ages you go to visit the Shadowy Corporation your uncle works for, blow up a computer, and immediately get kidnapped by said Shadowy Corporation. THEN you’re rescued by the cute girl’s weird friends in a helicopter and suddenly you’re working for a clandestine military group trying to stop metal men from blowing up the world. All of this happens in 1 day.

As I'm starting to reread Animorphs, I'm beginning to think that if Tobias was a bit more assertive, he would probably be a better leader than Jake... After all, Tobias was the one who was wholeheartedly committed to the war since the beginning, he also just generally seems to be in the right for the majority of the series. Am I off on this?

Although Tobias is definitely the one pulling them into the war in those first couple books, I don't think he's leader material.

Setting aside his repeated assertion (in #13, #29, #37) that "I'm nobody's leader", Tobias is too independent and uncompromising to keep the team together. You know that episode of Avatar where Toph keeps insisting that "I carry my own weight" and does take care of herself... but the whole point is that her insistence on not relying on others can also be very self-centered? That's Tobias. He's every bit as tough and self-sufficient at Toph... and his determination to always to his own self be true means that he can sometimes miss when his refusal of help is hurting the team.

Like, look at Tobias in #1. He says over and over "We have to do this". But the moment Marco says "We could all get killed!", Tobias dismisses him as "some kind of coward." It's Jake who persuades Marco to at least try morphing, Jake who finds a middle ground between "We find the Yeerk pool... blow it up and kill every one of those evil slugs" (Tobias's suggestion) and "pretend it was all a dream" (Marco's). Jake deals with opposition through voting, through compromise, through insisting that everyone hear everyone else out. Tobias deals with opposition through "Whatever you guys decide, I'm going to fight" — and he means it. If all the others are out, Tobias really does plan to fight the war alone (#3).

And then look at how that first battle goes. Jake is the one who keeps track of time, and keeps track of his team. Tobias is the one who morphs early and ignores the others half the time. Jake moves the mission parameters from "kill all yeerks" to "save Cassie and Tom". Tobias still wants to save everyone. Jake calls a retreat, even though he's maybe leaving his own brother to die. Tobias refuses to retreat, until it's too late.

Tobias values freedom above all else, even when freedom's just another word for "nothing left to lose." It's his greatest strength, and it's the reason he cannot lead a team.

I re-read (listened to) the first Animorphs book. The Invasion. K.A. Applegate is a seriously good horror writer. Really seriously amazing. I could go on about the terror of the Yeerk Pool, but every time I reread this book I'm struck hard by the fact that Cassie- sweet, gentle Cassie, who hates violence more than any of the others- killed the first time in The Invasion. Completely offscreen. Barely mentioned. There was just a Controller who knew too much, and she didn't want to talk about why he wouldn't be a problem anymore.

I wonder why Elfangor didn't let the Animorphs acquire him after giving them the morphing power? A matter of remaining pride? Not trusting them with his body? The need for him to be confirmed dead by Visser Three?

Honestly, that last one has always been my headcanon. I think that Elfangor's major beef with Visser Three both explains why Elfangor didn't try harder to morph and escape, and why Elfangor didn't give out his DNA. Because Visser Three is totally the kind of person who would burn the planet down if he thought Elfangor was still on it, consequences be damned.

And letting the kids morph him would be a huge red flag that they're not real andalites. It's not clear how much Elfangor plans on concealing the fact that Earth's defenders are human — Jake doesn't think of faking andalite until Visser Three mistakes them for "bandits" — but if a bunch of copies of Elfangor showed up to battle then that would be suspicious as all get-out. If your friend (or meatsuit's ex-student) Jeff died and then an identical copy of Jeff shows up to a battle... you're not going to assume that Jeff had long-lost clones. You're going to assume that this is someone else faking Jeff, and if you know about morphing then it's more logical to conclude that this is an andalite than that this is a human. Because there's no reason for a human to shift to the shape of a slightly different human just before a battle, but there's all the reason in the world for an andalite who wants you to think they're human to show up looking like Jeff.

So Elfangor's DNA doesn't do them much good, I don't think. Not if the kids want to remain incognito for as long as possible.
