i struggle with depression, have done for years. i don't want to make this a pity party, but without the constant monotonous sadness and emptiness that i go through for long periods of time, i wouldn’t know how to appreciate the times when i am genuinely happy. if i was happy all the time, i wouldn’t know to appreciate it. i need that darkness to learn to accept the light.

during my art gcse exam, on the first day when we got to the first break (it was a 10-hour exam over two days) my teacher, who was in the room with us, came up to me and told me i had to start again. that freaked me the hell out because i had my mind set on this one idea for weeks and then all of a sudden i had to change it. i went into panic mode during that 15-minute break, harassed my art friends for feedback, and frantically had to brainstorm a better idea with the coursework i had. fortunately, i came to the decision that i would have to do something simple enough so that i can complete it, but good enough so that i can demonstrate my skills whilst also knowing what to say about the meaning behind it in the evaluation. in the end, the finished piece was the best piece i had, personally, created over the two-year course - i got an A in art overall. if my teacher hadn’t approached me and told me to start again - if i didn't have that moment of darkness - i wouldn’t have been able to achieve what i did, and i most definitely would not have got the grade i wanted - i wouldn't have had that light.

over the past six months, my college grades have been falling. i take an assignment based course so there are no exams - easy, right? no. to finish with a high grade overall, you need to get distinctions in essentially every assignment for every unit. you get one pass or a merit and that's what you get for the whole unit. i hate that it's like that, but without it, i wouldn’t try as hard as i did. unfortunately, during the first half of the academic year, i had these friends who always aimed for the highest grades and worked as hard as they possibly could, and because they were my friends and i spent a lot of my time with them, they ended up motivating me to do the same. during that time, i was getting distinctions and merits in essentially all my assignments, and would rarely ever get a pass unless the teacher was literally evil and hated me. however, our friendship naturally drifted apart due to conflicting personalities and i had found other people who instead of conflicted, complimented my personality, and i felt happier around them. however, this did affect my grades. not because they sucked or they distracted me, but because i didn't have that main source of motivation anymore. i love the friends i have now, but sometimes they’re about as motivated as a tortoise who is being told it needs to run a marathon. my parents have noticed this too as they have access to my grades and keep comparing me to my old friends with the highest grades in the class and are always wanting more assignments. however, because my grades are starting to suck, it’s somehow motivated me to work harder, to achieve at least decent enough grades to keep my parents and i happy. yesterday, i emailed one of my teachers regarding his feedback on an old assignment - i explained that his feedback was asking for something i believed i had already included in the assignment, and he responded explaining what he meant but that he understood what i meant with what i had originally written, and gave me the grade i should have got - a distinction. due to my recent feelings of failure, a period of darkness, this was such a bright light that has pushed me to keep going, to keep working hard and to keep getting good grades. i wouldn’t have been able to do that if i kept my grades at the highest standard - i would have broken down at the possibility of getting a grade that wasn’t a distinction, and felt no joy or pride when i achieved distinctions as that's what i should be getting. however, my mother was proud of me. i was proud of me. i needed that period of darkness to know how to feel proud of myself, to have that light.

if you read this far, thank you. the last point is what inspired me to make this post, especially since i also just got accepted to a STEM summer placement which i have been really excited about yet was convinced i would be rejected. i wanted to make this post to show that its okay to be sad, its okay to have periods of failure or darkness or just not knowing because, without these, we wouldn’t know happiness, pride etc.
