@tharingoestmblr pointed out that a Solasan royal family tree would be helpful (and thank you so much for doing so -- I do not know how to respond to comments on Tumblr posts bc I'm eighty seven years old), but when I dug out the one I made ages ago on some Web 2.0 genealogy website it was so ugly my eye started twitching.

anyway, four hours of hyperfixation later, the new, improved, and expanded family tree (now with added Doran!):

Robert, Ademar, Edmund, Rafe, and Toby all share a set of great-grandparents, making them second cousins. Kenever is the half-brother of Edmund, Rafe, and Toby's mother and Ademar's father, making him their uncle. Kenever is Robert's second cousin once removed.

As I was making this, my husband pointed out that it would be more accurate to European royal history if everyone were married to a close relative. I told him that Margery and Robert Argent I (Robert's paternal grandparents) were first cousins, which is apparently *just enough* incest to pass the accuracy test. Good thing a solid 50% of the current generation of princes is gay, amirite?

Hello, hello, thanks for your work! I wanted to ask if you had a rough timeline of the invasion of Kel? I get a bit confused about it sometimes when Luca thinks about his homeland.

The current year in Solas (as of Book 1, Part II) is 721.

591: Roland the Conqueror* declares war on Kel.

620: Kel officially declared “pacified,” though resistance to the Solasan occupation continues for the next 80 years. All Keld are the legal vassals of the state of Solas.

700: King Charles dies having named his half-brother Kenever his successor rather than his son Ademar. The ensuing dynastic struggle results in huge numbers of Solasan soldiers being recalled from Kel. Many clans, including Ost, take advantage of the reduced forces to rebel and drive the remaining occupiers from their villages.

702: Year of Luca’s birth. Though Kel is still technically under occupation, many areas, including Ost, are no longer under Solasan control.

706: Luca turns four. Thanks to the weapons dealer Flavian Strange, the Solasan army has been heavily fortified and returns to “pacify” the rebellious clans. They use Ost as a landing zone and reclaim it for Solas.

720: Centennial celebration of 100 years of continuous and totally successful Solasan dominion over the benighted Barbarian Territories! Luca, now 18, is given to Ademar.

* Kenever’s grandfather; Robert, Tony, Rafe, and Edmund’s great-grandfather.

as you’ve probably noticed, Solas is currently engaged in a civil war…a war which once again resulted in lots and lots of troops being withdrawn from the Territories. and you bet the Kel are taking advantage of it. including [SPOILERS] Luca’s brothers.
