@jeoseungsaja | Here to leave another excerpt of the piece ‘Yeo is a simp’™: Yeo walks beside Shin, a low hum reverberating as he tries to pretend that he hasn’t been looking at his companion all this time by moving his glance elsewhere; toward some flowering shrubs nearby. “Shin,” the fox finally speaks, trying to remain casual, “your hand looks heavy,” and he stretches his arm, putting palm up, offering it at Dokkaebi, “let me hold it for you.”

The biggest problem, perhaps, with being creatures as unique and ancient as the two of them are, is, that the will always inevitably stumble upon situations they’ve heard of, witness from afar, understood to be part of someone’s given, granted universe, that they had never come close to engaging in.

At least in Shin’s case, for there is only so much of his understanding of Wang Yeo he can actually apply to the fox at his side with the shameless arrogance of a lover who thinks nothing new is to be find within the crevices of what is certainly not someone loved, not if so easily discarded along with the thousands of mysteries and blessings they still hide between their fingers.

Shin has seen all sorts of things, he watches TV with the same casual semi-regularity many other of the South Korean population would be able to reference the most iconic of scenes, an inside joke to Come Back Mister, a nod to the surprising and barely satisfying queer representation in Secret Garden.

He’s seen things, he’s heard of songs and listened to some as well. Read of moments like these and butterflies.

But other than coming to the unsurprising conclusion that no amount of casual flirting while extending a polite arm to a shop-owner, no amount of shared smiles with an army official obvious enough to make him wonder for his safety, no amount of whispers into spaces where even a yangban maiden might have heard him, could truly be a match, or even come close to enter the same category of thought, as flirting today, at the side of a powerful, nine-tailed fox.

One who comes equipped with the brazenness of a character rumoured as typical to his species, yet one Shin always wants to apply to him and him only.

There’s no comparison nor contrast, he doesn’t like engaging in the many similarities Wang Yeo too will inevitably share with some soul on this earth or the next. The extending of his arm, the halting of Shin’s already slow steps in response, these are unique to him, and anyone who would have read this pick-up line on a forum and decided to add it to their repertoire, well, they might never find out somewhere out here, Shin is seeing them and thinking of him.

He likes these idle walks.

They seem just perfect to set them up for moments like these.

Other than that, though, or mainly, he enjoys them for the tranquillity they settle his fox’s heart into. The ease to perform as he is and sputter his nonsense, the kind he’d only call that to smooth the wrinkles of being flustered it had pressed into his heart, the kind he’d only call nonsense because he likes teasing and smiling.

Because of that tranquillity, the permission to be just them and maybe nothing more if not everything they were ever meant to be. Settling into the universe’s crevices, finding that silhouette that had been carved out for him to come to rest in, and find that he’d rather sit down next to the freshly dug up soil and wait, wait for that moment, look out to the sky, and consider just a bit more life, if only it would mean getting more of this, more of him.

More of those side-glances and the bad attempts to hide them.

More of the brightness of sun rays as they get tangled in his bright red hairs, coming to rest snug between the soft strands.

That damned smirk of his when he thinks himself on top of the moment, and all the times he’s been right, leaving Shin stunned to the side, wondering if standing there and staring on is what deities envy humans so much for.

He doesn’t consider himself much of a god.

But when Wang Yeo holds his palm up and seems so convinced of his thing, when Wang Yeo breathes out and breaks into a smile, when Wang Yeo stops and exists just a moment a longer where he can dare think they exist together and to be together, then, then he’d take it.

The mantle, the moniker, the title of a god, vengeful in all he’d do for him, and belonging to the Heaven for where else to go after he’d been cleansed by love he doesn’t deserve but will so shamelessly devote himself to anyway.

The envy of a deity, before the beauty of the non-divine.

Luckily, he is not enough god for this to last.

Because there’s no envy in the poet’s admirer of what the word divine was created for.

A chuckle, half an incredulous smile, a minute shake of his head.

There’s half a moment where he looks as if he’s about to turn away. His chin lifts, he stares ahead of himself, is he picking up mannerisms or why does his smile resembles his so much?

Up until it breaks into that flustered nonsense no creature of his might that isn’t him would be caught wearing.

He smacks his palm onto Yeo’s awaiting one and pulls both their hands into the pocket of his coat.

“Seriously, what am I going to do with you.”

My Demon: Inspiration or Plagiarism?

Guardian Goblin...Guardian Mountain God...Guardian Demon

In the latest drama, "My Demon," we're introduced to a guardian demon. However, as I delved into the series, a sense of déjà vu crept in. Was this guardian demon truly distinct, or did he bear striking similarities to others we've seen before?

Questions about plagiarism first emerged when Gu Won's death scene in "My Demon" closely resembled that of Kim Shin's death scene in "Goblin". Many dismissed the notion that the writer had plagiarized the scene, citing the cinematographer had worked on both "Goblin" and "My Demon".

However, I believe the issue of plagiarism extended beyond cinematography; from the characterization of the male lead to the overall concepts, "My Demon" seemed almost identical to well-known fantasy kdramas, echoing themes, lines, and scenes from its predecessors. The writer, Choi Ah Il, appeared to borrow extensively from existing works, crossing the line between inspiration and outright plagiarism.

Gu Won, the guardian demon, was a mishmash of characters from various supernatural dramas. His personality, appearance, and even punishment seemed like something taken right out of "Goblin", "Tale of the Nine-Tailed", and "Doom at Your Service." Beyond his Thanos-like finger snap and cross tattoo, there was very little that made him unique.

For a writer who criticized goblins, nail-tailed foxes, grim reapers, and vampires, Choi Ah Il failed to differentiate her demon. Gu Won could've been a distinctive supernatural character with his own unique backstory or even a different style, but instead, he felt like a Frankenstein creation of well-established supernatural creatures. Ultimately, I was left to wonder if the writer or even Gu Won himself knew who he really was.

In my field, we constantly aim to create innovative and original ideas. Therefore, I understand the fear that can come with breaking new ground. For Choi Ah Il's first fantasy drama, the fear of her original ideas not being good enough might have led her to heavily rely on existing works.

My advice to Choi Ah Il is to have more confidence in both herself and her ideas. When we put our entire heart and soul into our work, our sincerity and passion will shine through, making them more likely to be appreciated by others. We should embrace all of our "crazy" ideas instead of plagiarizing others' work. Even if our idea doesn't work out, at least we know we gave it our all. And this, to me, is infinitely more fulfilling than imitating others.

So in conclusion, "My Demon" had the potential to be a great fantasy drama, but it seemed to copy too much from others' works. Whether it's an issue of inspiration or outright plagiarism, the drama left me wondering what ideas truly belonged to Choi Ah Il. As viewers, we deserve to experience a writer's unique voice, not a patchwork of borrowed elements hastily stitched together. Going forward, I'll probably give this writer one more chance to improve her scriptwriting. I must add that if it weren't for the great cast and their impeccable acting and adlibs, this drama would've been doomed due to its messy plot and lack of true originality.

Below are some scenes and concepts from other shows and movies that are nearly identical to the ones in "My Demon". I'll let you decide for yourself if you think the writer of "My Demon" was inspired by other's works or simply plagiarized them.

(Note: I might add more later, but it's a lot of work to go through each show and screenshot everything and then compile them in a collage)

Goblin The Great and Lonely God

4. In the past, the FL dies, ML kills a bunch of people, and ML ends his life. ML has memories of his past sins erased. As punishment, ML is turned into a grim reaper character.

The quote Madam Ju said in Ep 3 about plants and seeds was similar to the one said by Ji Tak in "Goblin": Humans have four lives. A life of planting seeds, a life of watering seeds, a life of harvesting, and a life of using the harvests.

The ML's had blamed God for all the obstacles in their lives and when they finally got a chance to talk to God, God told them they didn't have all the anwers to their questions and that they didn't know everything similar to God in MD.

The FL dies at the peak of her happiness similar to how in MD, the FL's parents died at the peak of her happiness.

The FL in "Goblin" was the key to ending the ML's life as an immortal just like how in MD, the FL was the key to making the ML human.

Tale of the Nine Tailed

In "Tale of the Nine Tailed," The Almighty granted Nine-Tailed Foxes or Gumihos various powers, but they were bound by one rule: they must fulfill their end of the deal/contract with humans or face death. This rule aimed to prevent Gumihos from murdering humankind. Similarly, in "My Demon," Gu Won faced a similar fate. If he didn't make deals with humans, he would die. Additionally, if Gu Won murdered humans, he would also face death. In both cases, rules and contracts were established to prevent supernatural beings endowed with god-like powers from killing humans.

The concept of wanting to live or die together in TOTNT was also present in MD

In TOTNT, the FL tried to protect the ML, but ended up dying. In the present, the ML made it a mission to protect the FL to prevent the same tragic fate from happening. ML ended up saving the FL in present but died in the process...and then ML came back to life just like in MD.

ML in TOTNT came back to life/was reincarnated as a mortal human with Gumiho powers similar to how after Gu Won came back to life, he was a human with demon powers.

Twilight

Supernatural leaves human because they hates their monstrous nature

There are few things in this life that could make it so very difficult for the former general to withhold a smile. An attempt at presence and elegance, that's what he's going for, showcasing something completely unrequired and perhaps even wholly useless if matched directly to the continuous twitching of both corners of his mouth.

He doesn't even allow himself the unmasking of his pretense when he's being peppered with kisses, which would be just about the ideal time to stop standing as stiffly as he is, convinced the broad self-assured line of his back does anything to hide the way his eyes sparkle or how child-like he's beginning to look with the response he's getting.

Ah, yes. General Kim Shin just did a good thing and is already reaping his rewards.

The only thing better than this is the face Wang Yeo will make once he gets his hands on any and all brooches his adored fox may desire.

And really, isn't that what's important here? Less the oddity of Shin's response, and more the glow of Yeo's face as he responds?

Sometimes living is just... violently easier if Shin gets a Wang Yeo smile to smooth like a soothing palm over the many rashes over his soul.

He straights his back further, folds his hands behind his back even though it is far too tempting to snatch Yeo's out of thin air when it is being offered - a subconscious reach, even, Shin's hand had been twitching halfway to its desired destination before Shin had opted for theatrics.

"Whichever door you prefer," he announces dramatically, gesturing with the hand he'd wanted to clasp around Yeo's, all around any and all directions.

"I'll make any door work for you."

you’re sitting in the passenger seat of minho’s car as you both get closer to your aunts home. you couldn’t wait to see your aunt and brother, you missed them as you been away because of college.

you glance at minho as he drive and smile at him, “don’t you miss them too?”

he glances at you, “not really.” you frown a bit, “how come?” you ask.

he sighs, “i would rather spend my weekend with my cats.”

you roll your eyes at him, “then why did you come with?” you ask.

he sighs, “you think i was going to leave you coming home, alone? you’re wrong.”

“that’s why you’re my best friend.” you smile at him. minho returns the smile but it was a bit sad from your words. he likes you and didn’t have the intention of telling you at all and you had no idea.

➸ time skip

arms wrap around you and spin you around, “you’re finally back!” you giggle as ryujin lets you go. “i missed you so much.”

“i missed you too.” you say as you see jisung runs over to you and hugs you.

“and i’m just chopped liver.” minho mumbles as no one has greeted or hugged him.

jisung rolls his eyes as he lets you go from the hug and went towards him. “well, sorry, that i wanted to hug my sister first.” minho chuckles as they hug, putting their arms on each others shoulders, “can’t wait til you’re my brother in law.”

you and ryujin roll their eyes while minho pushes jisung, blushing. “shut up.”

the four walk into the house, it’s only the four of them as your aunt is working still. all four of you went into the kitchen to get snacks.

“but anyways, when are you going to be my brother in law min?” jisung asks again.

you push your brothers shoulder a bit, “ji, you know we don’t like each other like that.” he just rolls his eyes, “it’s nice to dream.”

your phone dings, you see it’s from the detective you’re working with. “i’ll be back.” you walk into the bathroom to answer his message.

you sneak out the bathroom, texting jisung while doing so. you run between a few building and switch into your spider costume, a nice tight black with white spider web design around it. your wrists move forwards, spitting out webs so you can swing to where detective choi is at.

you land in front of san and jennie, “you made it.” detective kim says with a smile. you return the smile with a nod.

after about an hour, you did eventually catch the guy. you had him wrapped in the your webs, waiting for the authorities to get here. your phone dings and you see it’s minho.

about ten minutes later, san and jennie both arrived with other cops with them. “you’re amazing spider-woman.” jennie smiles, patting your back.

you nod in return, “i have to head out now.” you tell the two and use your webs to bring yourself out of there, rushing back home while changing back into your normal clothing you had on.
