Richard Dadd (1817-86)
The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke (1855-64)
The original painting that inspired Freddie’s 1974 masterpiece.

You can see the actual real painting at Tate Britain in London. I’ve been to see it - it’s tiny. So much detail in such a limited space. It’s magnificent, though.

BRIAN MAY: The source for this song was a painting from the 1850s or 1860s, which still hangs in the Tate Gallery. Freddie - who was a very good artist, as you know - was obsessed with this painting and he idolised Richard Dadd. Legend has it that Dadd was losing his mind when he painted this, going mad in a strange way. But the quality and detail in the painting is incredible. Freddie used to take us and the road crew to the Tate to see it. We always saw Freddie's lyrics as very literary and poetic, but I think that he was leaking a lot of autobiographical spirit into his songs. It's very transgressive - you don't have to read too deeply into lyrics like "dirty laddio", "fairy dandies", "what a queerie fellow" and "tickling the fancy of a lady friend"... It's a wonderful track. Like "The Millionaire Waltz" from A Day At The Races, it's one of Freddie's hidden masterpieces. Not many people know it, because it wasn't a single and we didn't play it much live. But I loved multitracking my guitar and playing through the Deaky box - that wonderful amplifier that John Deacon invented, using a circuit board and a radio speaker he found in a skip. I still use John's amp today. It means I can sound like a violin or a trumpet or whatever.

SERIES MASTERLIST
Gilded Constellations | (wolfstar x reader)
Summary: You meet Sirius and Regulus at a family vacation in the Caribbean, but things don't go as planned and you end up losing contact once the trip is over. Years later your family moves to England and you get accepted at Hogwarts where you finally meet Sirius once again, along with all of his friends. One of them with a mysterious secret, that you'll uncover as you embark on your own Hogwarts adventure. Mostly canon-compliant.
This IS a wolfstar x reader fic, but it's incredibly slow burn. They won't start all dating each other until we're very deep into the story, but I promise the long wait will be worth it.

A/N: Most Poly!Marauders fics are oneshots, where the relationship between characters is already established, and they're all happy and pleased with it. No issues, no drama, but I WANTED the drama. Couldn't find it, so I set myself up to write the story behind the stablished relationship. I wanted to know how they started dating each other, the jealousy, the will they won't they, because getting into a poly relationship can't be an easy task, and I wanted to explore that story. If you're interested: Welcome to Gilded Constellations!

Is it really ”The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke”? What’s a feller? Internet says the title is written on the back of Dadd’s painting but won’t show pics. Wouldn’t a fairy teller be more of a thing? Asking you as a fairy tale teller.
He's a feller -- someone who fells trees and such with his mighty axe, and who is about to split a chestnut.
Dadd wrote a poem about the painting, called Elimination of a Picture & its subject--called The Feller's Master Stroke, in which he describes all the people and creatures you can see in it. Of the Feller he says,
fay woodman holds aloft the axe
Whose double edge virtue now they tax
To do it singly & make single double
Featly & neatly--equal without trouble.
(He was a remarkable painter. Not so much of a poet.)
Freddie Mercury was inspired by the painting and also by the poem (how did he get hold of the poem? Even Roger Taylor seems baffled) and wrote the Fairy Feller's Master Stroke song.
