Bruno’s bleeding. Bruno’s bleeding and Mirabel doesn’t know what to do first. It’s not just his nose, her handkerchief huddled to his lap. Ruby drips on the shoulders of his ruana, staining the green fabric. His ears.
“Mamá…where's Mamá…”
Bruno’s hand is loose in hers, slack. The thump of his pulse beneath her thumb is sluggish.
“Mamá…”
But Mamá is in town today. Mirabel and Bruno are alone in Casita. The stone walls groan, perhaps reflecting Bruno’s distress. Like the tumble of rocks when Casita collapsed.
Mirabel roughly pushes the thought away before it can bring panic. Bruno needs help. He said Mamá’s food didn’t help…but maybe for this, it will? It can’t hurt.
As soon as Bruno comes out of the vision, she’ll run for food. As soon as he comes out.
His eyes are glowing, empty of life. Bruno can’t hear her in an involuntary vision. He can’t see her. She squeezes his wrist tighter, focusing on the beat. Is it…slowing?

To a beloved Stranger
You don't remember me. I'm beginning to forget you. The Memory of your Face, its Features I once knew so well, eroded by the River of Time. The Melody of your Voice hushed by the Static of Space between Us. You exist in a fading Photograph. Your only Record a worn down vinyl on its final Replay.
I'll love you even so. I hope you do too.

I love that in the Podcast they specifically said they wanted to frame the hospital fight not as this action packed scene, but as sad. Because Joel has completely disassociated. He’s checked out because trauma can do that to a person, let’s you separate what’s happening. They said this is him burning his soul for this one girl.
He’s doing what needs to be done in the same way Marlene did but while her focus was humanity, his focus is just Ellie. It’s tunnel vision. He kills anyone who is a threat and even if they drop their weapon, they could change their mind and still shoot him and then Ellie dies. He doesn’t kill the doctor until he becomes a threat by wielding the scalpel.
And them saying Marlene actually signed her death warrant the moment she said “let me go” because it meant she planned to try and survive her wound. There would be a tomorrow and in that tomorrow, she would try and come after them. So of course she had to die because her living meant Ellie wouldn’t be safe.

One Step Beyond - The Final Chapter
Mirabel relaxes in her hammock, one foot flung over to nudge the tiles, keeping her rocking. The early afternoon promises further heat, driving her to the shade. The deep blue of the sky peaks through the branches of the mahogany tree. It’s still swelling in size and the trunk is thicker each morning. The plants at its base long since filled in the empty planter, presenting a riot of color.
It’s been a few weeks since Bruno talked to Abuela and asked her to help with visions. He’s only done one with her since then, but he said it went well. The excitement at the interaction was plain in his swinging gestures, the story speeding up with each reenactment. It’s just one instance, but it is a step down the path of healing.
“It’s not just about the visions,” Bruno confides in her. “It’s about spending time with Mamá. It’s been so long and, well, it wasn’t the best between us before we left, you know? Well, I guess you don’t know, you were just a kid.”
“Tío, our family made a motto out of not talking about you. I think I can take a guess.”
“Myah, okay, good point. But it’s—nice, just to be with her. Even if it’s doing a vision. She’s not quite as optimistic as you, but she’s good at presenting visions to the town. It’s what she did when I was growing up; acted as the go-between.” He snorts, “I’m too blunt on my own.”
Mirabel encountered this bluntness in the past and doesn’t push back. “What did you do about the stairs?”
“Ah…Casita took pity on us and moved the vision cave downstairs. It moved back up later, but it helped. You didn’t have anything to do with that, did you?” Bruno squints at her like he can peel the secret from behind her eyes.
Mirabel smiles and says nothing.
He waves a hand, not truly annoyed. “Fine, fine, miracle holder, don’t grace us with your wisdom.”
“Tío!” She’s laughing, gesturing at the house around them. “Who can predict the whims of Casita?”
The house clinks tiles, backing her up.
