The first thing Riley noticed upon waking up was the millions of text messages and audio recordings Julie had sent her throughout the night. Around 10:30 they started, coming one after the other, and finally they started dipping off around 1 in the morning.
Riley read over the last text sent at around quarter to 3 and she knew the other girl would probably have gotten no sleep the night before. She couldn’t help but feel happy and excited, having listened to the song Julie was working on all night long.
She fired off a text message to Julie letting her know she would see her at school in the music room first thing. Immediately, Riley jumped out of bed and started rushing around her room to get ready for school.
She threw on a pair of black ripped jeans, paired with an old band tee and her moms green bomber jacket. Throwing her hair up in a messy bun, she grabbed her school bag and ran down the stairs to head out the door, stopping at the familiar sound of sizzling coming from the kitchen.
“Dad?” Riley questioned, taking a few steps from the entrance hall and peeking her head into the room. A tuft of black hair stood up straight from her dad’s head, sleep still evident in the way his clothes rumpled on his frame.
“Honey.” He turned around, a smile on his face and spatula in hand. “I’m making breakfast before I go to work, want anything?”
Riley stared a little while longer, looking at what she assumed was to be a pancake now burning in the pan her father had left unsupervised.
“Don’t let the batter burn, and I’m okay thanks. I’m off to school!” She called out quickly making smooching sounds that her father quickly returned before the door shut closed behind her.
The walk to school was quick enough, the girl almost sprinting in excitement because of what Julie had texted her. Riley was pumped, knowing that Julie was going to march into the classroom and perform no matter what. She was going to take charge and make things happen.
Within moments she was running up to the school, heading in the direction of the music room where she spotted Julie and Flynn.
“Hey so are we doing this thing or not?”
“Or not? Everyone’s at the spirit assembly.” Julie piped up.
“Absolutely not, I don’t think so.” Riley started. The refusal evident in her tone that she would not be accepting this for what it was. “It looks to me like we’re crashing the party.”
Riley grinned widely before grabbing both of Julie’s and Flynn’s hands. Laughter echoed through the halls as the girls were dragged behind Riley. They burst into the gymnasium only to find Carrie in the middle of the room, lights, music, outfits.
“Look who decided to spend all of daddy’s money paying for costumes and Katy Perry’s choreographer.” Flynn piped up as they entered. Riley couldn’t help but snicker, seeing the stark pink on Carrie’s head and thinking she looked like a giant dancing panic button.
The girl continued to perform in front of them and Riley felt her stomach turn slightly. She had never liked Carrie, especially not when they used to hang out together. It was Carrie who had decided that she was better than the rest of them, leaving them behind and adapting the snarky personality Riley had grown to hate.
She couldn’t bother watching anymore, groaning loudly. The sound rang clearly through the room as the music finished, eyes turning to her quickly. Riley covered her mouth, letting the principal and Mrs. Harrison take over the student's attention.
They began to talk, dismissing the crowd and quickly Riley ushered Julie on stage. She moved quickly, sneaking over and creeping away from her. Flynn had already dipped, wanting to get a good spot, while Riley stayed off to the side.
It was time. Julie was now stood on stage, making her way over to the piano and slowly taking a seat. Julie’s fingers lightly pressed against the keys, chords being played and music flying through the room. Julie’s vocals softly accompanied the music and Riley cheered lightly.
A smile overtook her face as she listened to her best friend. She could see the way Julie’s own smile brightened and she started to enjoy herself more on stage. It was when the chorus started that the boys appeared. In a flash of light, they came from nowhere, and now there were three boys on stage, all looking to be around their age.
Riley’s eyes scanned over them, landing on the boy with brown hair, tucked under a bright orange beanie. Something about him seemed so familiar and Riley found her eyes locked on him.
Julie finished singing and Riley watched as the boy moved towards his own microphone, a smile lighting up his own face. As he began singing, Riley felt a pull in her chest, her heart thumping rapidly.
“I feel something around me now, so unclear, lifting me out.” The words sounded so different from him, his voice washing over her. There was something so comforting and familiar about his voice, Riley swearing she must have heard it before. The song continued and Riley could tell from the dip in the instruments that they were reaching the bridge.
Riley’s eyes moved from where they had drifted to Julie and suddenly they were locked with a pair of bright brown eyes. A smirk graced his lips as he continued to sing to her, causing everything else around Riley to slowly fade away.
Julie’s voice broke them out of their daze, Riley shaking her head slightly. She cheered loudly as the song finished, hoping that Julie would be able to hear her over everyone else. The music faded out and another flash of light appeared, the boys disappearing as suddenly as they had come.
The entire gym erupted into whispers, everybody wondering what on earth had just happened as Julie stood in front of them all.
“Hey, where’d the rest of the band go?” The student working on lights began to walk on stage towards Julie, asking the question everyone was thinking.
“Wait, were those holograms?” One of the girls questioned. Julie turned once again towards the crowd, her eyes going wide as she began to speak.
“Yes! Yes, they were holograms. I plugged it into the ceiling projector before the show. I’d explain it, but it involves algorithms and science stuff.”
Around her, the crowd erupted into cheers, everybody applauding for Julie as she stayed on stage. As much as Riley wanted to believe her best friend, she couldn’t. There was no possible way that the boys hadn’t been real. The way her eyes had remained locked with the one wearing the beanie was not something that could be faked like that.
The principal began to usher everyone out and Riley stayed where she was, waiting for Julie to finish talking with them. As she got lost in her thoughts, Flynn came over and bumped shoulders.
“Can you believe that?” She asked.
“Julie was amazing, like usual. But she’s lying.”
“I know. We need to figure out what’s going on.” Flynn took Riley’s hand in her own walking over to meet Julie who was coming towards them.
“Wow. You did it.” Flynn stated.
“Thanks to you guys.” Julie conceded. Riley scoffed lightly, causing worry to flash behind Julie’s eyes. “Hey, you okay?”
“When did you start playing with a hologram band, Molina?” Riley asked, crossing her arms over her chest. Flynn looked impatiently towards Julie and the girl knew she wasn’t going to be able to tell her friends the truth. There was no way they would believe her.
“Oh, it was just one song. We’re not a band. They’re a band, a hologram band.”
“So why have you been keeping those cute boys a secret?” Flynn asked, finally asking the question that was really bugging her.
“There’s a reason for that. It’s just… really crazy.”
“Well we’re all about crazy here so tell us.” Riley said, not letting up with her gaze. Julie was beginning to show signs of being uncomfortable and Riley sighed. She began doubting the way her and Flynn were acting towards Julie, wondering if they were pushing her a little too much too soon.
It wasn’t fair to say that what Julie had done to them was any better. She had lied to both of them, not letting them know about what she had been planning all along, and that she had even known a band.
“Anyways, who’s excited that I’m back in the music program?” Julie questioned, Riley having missed the entire explanation while she was trapped in her own head. She could tell by the look on Flynn’s face that whatever Julie had said wasn’t believable.
“Jules, are you lying to us?” Flynn asked. Julie sighed, the smile finally leaving her lips.
“Yes.” She admitted.
“Since when do we lie to each other?” She cried out in exasperation.
“Flynn, Riley, I’m sorry.” Riley could tell that Julie was genuinely sorry, not wanting to have to tell them lies. Whatever was the real reason for Julie hiding the boys was obviously something that was bugging her as well.
“I’m sorry? That’s all you’ve got?” Flynn waited for a moment and when neither of the girls spoke up she finally stormed out, heading towards the gymnasium doors.
Riley and Julie both called out her name, following behind after her. Riley had managed to get out a half a second faster than the other and was able to make it past the crowd walking by while Julie got trapped.
“I’ve got it!” She called down the hall, giving Julie a thumbs up and heading to where she had last seen Flynn. Students weaved through the halls blocking her path, and she pushed by them with some trouble. It seemed no matter how close Riley got to Flynn the girl was always gone again.
She sighed, after losing Flynn for the third time and deciding that she would just have to text her and make sure she was okay later that night. She probably needed to blow off some steam alone anyways. While Julie and Riley clung to each other for comfort, Flynn usually dealt with her things alone first.
It was only when she was done working through it herself that she would let the other girls get close to her and help her out. Although Riley didn’t like the idea of Flynn being angry alone, she knew the girl preferred her space and so she respected that.
She headed back in the direction of the gymnasium, shoving her hands into her jacket pockets as she always did. The hallways had died down considerably and Riley found herself easily searching out the sound of Julie’s voice.
It was the other three voices that made Riley halt in her footsteps. She recognized the voice of the boy who had sung on stage. Something about the pure joy and happiness in his voice made Riley feel a way she hadn’t before. Her heart thumped in her chest, picking up her feet and continuing to walk towards the group.
“Julie!” She called as she rounded the corner, successfully gaining the group's attention. “You guys were great up there.”
She knew Julie had been lying, there had been no way those boys had been holograms. She wasn’t sure how they had managed to get up on the stage with Julie but she was sure she would figure it out. Riley could see the boys clearly, looking over the one with jet black hair and smiling at him, slowly turning to the blonde and giving him a small wave.
The one wearing the beanie looked at her, something clicking in his head and before he could stop himself he let the name slip from his lips.
“Johanna?”
Riley paused, not expecting to hear the name of her mother come from this complete stranger. She was sure it was just a coincidence. Of course he thought she was someone else. He probably just had a friend who looked like her. And happened to share the name of her deceased parent.
Odd. But a coincidence.
“I’m sorry, I think you may have me confused with someone else. My name is Riley.” She outstretched her hand to him, which was when Julie spoke up.
“Wait, you can see him?”

I’ve made Spotify playlists inspired by each of the ghosts and I’ve made these little written pieces to talk about them. if you wanna read them, please go ahead - if not then enjoy the music!!
This is Kitty’s playlist:
Best Friend - Rex Orange County
Kitty’s friendliness is just so sweet to me like I love that after a few episodes Alison accepts Kitty as a good friend but like before that when Kitty wants a sleepover which Alison basically denies her, I’m like O.o Kitty pls be my best friend ily!!
Piano Concerto No. 21 in C Major - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart & Géza Anda
I wanted to include at least a little bit of music from each of the ghosts time frame so I decided on a little bit of Mozart for Kitty - who, given when she lived and the familial culture at the time, probably played an instrument with piano being entirely probable.
Wildest Dreams - Duomo
I wanted to include at least one Bridgerton song for Kitty because I mean it’s obvious how influential issues brought up in the show would be on Kitty’s life. She was alive just before Bridgerton is set (1813 - Kitty died in the late 1700s) so I think she’d appreciate the modern song with a twist, and obviously she’d love the all the dances and everything.
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
An easy choice. I mean, it’s literally the go to song for people who are incredibly happy and optimistic. I didn’t want to include tons of overly happy songs for Kitty because I find her overwhelming happiness to be tinged with such sadness — she’s positive to a fault and it’s so sad what she went through during her life but yeah it’s a nice song for her.
Forever Young - Alphaville
I read somewhere that Kitty is canonically a teenager - I don’t know if that’s true so if someone could enlighten me that would be really great. But yeah is Kitty the youngest ghosts, surely it’s her or Thomas right? Anyway, Kitty will be forever young and I find that a weird concept?? That’s my in depth analysis XD
Enter One - Sol Seppy
I have so so so so so so so so much love for this song I think it’s just gorgeous. Okay but like assuming Kitty grew up at Button House (or I assume Higham House at the time) then she would’ve grown up literally from a little kid in front of some of the other ghosts (Robin, Humphrey, Mary and Annie) so like they witnessed whatever trauma and/or neglect Kitty went through. Ages ago I read someone talking about the ghosts watching her grow up and then taking care of her for the first time after she died (I can’t find the post) so like this verse: “To a friend, A sister in need, Who is not alone, And they are surrounding her, And they will enfold her outstretched hand, In our love” is just so beautiful for that moment when they finally get to take her away from her family which I love and adore and uhhhhh it’s so good, it’s such a good song.
Shake It Off - Taylor Swift
Okay from me legit crying over Kitty’s life and emotional stuff to just being like yeah this is a happy song and just something to dance to!!
Magnificent (She Says) - Elbow
This song just has gorgeous vibes and given that Kitty has just gorgeous vibes as well it was impossible for me not to include it.
Good Day - The Dresden Dolls
Someone suggested The Dresden Dolls for Kitty on my previous music post and I’d never heard of them before I’m a bit in love now… like the dark cabaret style and creepy sorta vocals and piano are just <3 <3 Like damn! And yeah I think this song is Kitty-like cause like when Alison was kinda ignoring her in ALN she got really upset as if this was a regular occurrence in her life as well like her sister or maybe her parents ignoring her in favour of her sister maybe??
Optimistic - Radiohead
“And remember: as long as you try your best.” I think that line is probably the moment of Kitty’s “personality introduction” so I kinda had to include something similar.
Devil Town - Cavetown
Okay I know this song is about parental divorce but I kinda like to apply it a bit more widely to broken families and dysfunctional households which Kitty obviously experienced. I think also the line “nevermind, I’ll settle for two birthdays” shows a kind of optimism in the face of family trauma and the acceptance that bad things often have to be spun in a positive light to cope with it.
growing up is getting old - VICTORIA
Kitty angst, Kitty angst, Kitty angst!!! After the episode descriptions we got today I am really really hoping for much more of a deep dive into Kitty’s emotions. I just want to know more about her life, and I just want the other ghosts to be protective and loving of her O.O
Stacking Chairs - Middle Kids
Kitty’s urge to be around Alison and do what’s best for her is just what I love more than anything. I really love that scene she has with the Captain where he’s like “you one Alison?” And “You want what’s best for her” like Cap/Kitty solidarity is what I live for (more to come in season 3????)
Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
I feel like with Alison arriving at the house Kitty finally has the opportunity to be a young woman again?? If that makes sense. Cause she’s been around generally older and predominantly male ghosts for a long time which is why I think she’s fixated on Alison so much because it’s the first time in centuries that she’s been around someone with similar interests etc as her. So yeah, like asking for the sleepover and wanting to talk about boys and stuff gives me Teenage Dream vibes.
In One Ear - Cage The Elephant
Like I said I didn’t want Kitty’s playlist to all be soft and sweet cause I feel like that’s kinda reducing everything about her into a little soft ball of syrup so yeah this song is sick and it’s basically about not caring what others say about you but yeah I like it!!
Would You Be So Kind - dodie
I had to include something dodie cause she’s just got that soft kind vibe. I don’t love many of her songs, it’s not really my style, but this (and In The Middle) are pretty good. Also I don’t think Kitty has much of a distinction between platonic and romantic love (same Kitty) and therefore this song is pretty fitting.
Amazing Grace - Judy Collins
If I could include Kitty’s ‘Amazing Kitty’, I definitely would cause that whole scene is just really funny. But like I said, I’m trying to include some music from when they would have lived and Amazing Grace is from the 1770s which is just when Kitty would’ve been born.
Happy - Pharrell Williams
An obvious choice but I wanted to talk about this a touch. My irl friend hates Kitty so much because she say she can’t stand people who are always happy and like infectiously positive all the time and literally every time Kitty is on screen she starts complaining and I find it so bizarre and like I’ve called her out a number of times like stfu but it’s constant. Like I find Kitty’s happiness kinda melancholy cause like she has so much to be sad about like her family and sister and stuff and I think learning more about in her life will just extend quite how sad her overt happiness actually is.
We’re Going to Be Friends - The White Stripes
Ngl I had no idea this was by The White Stripes before searching it up but apparently it is. It’s about like childhood friendship and nostalgia which I think is very right for Kitty as she works to try and make Alison her best friend after not having one during her life (and therefore relying on Florence the statue).
Girls Just Want to Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
This song just gives me major girly sleepover vibes which I think is quite fitting. I find it interesting that as soon as Alison can see the ghosts (and accepts that she can see them) the first thing Kitty asks of Alison is to have a sleepover, maybe she sees that as the true mark of friendship? Perhaps her sister was always having sleepovers with her friends and Kitty wanted to join? I want to know Kitty’s backstory more than anyones, I think she’s fascinating!!

''We can't just leave her here...''
The female fairy looked down at the young child sleeping inside the lily, they could've picked a better place for her or even brave it and bring her home. It wasn't her fault, it wasn't her fault that she couldn't fly. The girl wouldn’t survive without her wings, it was heartbreaking that their home had come to the conclusion to leave her behind during the migration.
''You know I am right, she won't remember us.''
The male fairy flits over to the side of one of the lily's petals, gently pushing it to close. They had already disturbed the flower's rest, there was still hesitation in their hearts. It was cruel to leave her but what could they do? She wouldn't survive long without wings, it was odd that she hadn't grown them, let alone be born without them. Heartbreaking, a child's first flutter was something that had been robbed from them. The child was suspected as a late bloomer, that she would grow her wings eventually but she had already reached this age.
''How long do you think she'll sleep for?''
They both pressed against the petals, closing the flower tightly for the seasonal change.
''Winter is almost here, she could sleep for months- She's better off out here, someone will find her and take care of her. I am sure of it.''
The female fairy sniffles, gently patting the closed bud of the lily in good faith that the future would be kind. She would be safe in the royal gardens, far away from the dangerous forest.
''Perhaps she can come back home one day...''
Tumblr media
Gullveig yawned, stretching out her arms. A bit startled by the little ladybird nudging her, she couldn't help but smile. Softly patting it's colourful shell, such a sweet little bug. The ladybird crawled into her lap and settled, maybe it was thirsty. Waiting to find the morning dew, surely there was some close by. Gullveig believed the ladybird might be a bit tired, she looks over to Loki who still slept so soundly. She giggles when he began snoring, not exactly a princely fellow. Not that princes weren't allowed to snore, she simply didn't expect it of him. Maybe he was just really tired, last night had been tense.
''Loki? Are you awake?''
Loki groans in his sleep, turning onto his side. His head resting on his arm with a soft hum. She found his mumbling to be quite endearing, whatever he was dreaming of sounded very sweet. Loki's forehead creased and his fingers formed a loose fist, there was that sour expression again. Gullveig pets the ladybird, it seemed to enjoy it but she was more worried about what was going on inside Loki's head.
''Mother...''
She sighs, Gullveig wasn't entirely sure what went on with his family but she knew that Loki was conflicted. It had something to do with him being one of the cold ones, now that she thinks about it she wasn't sure who told her the stories about the cold ones. Perhaps it was her own mother, if she had one. Gullveig envied Loki, from their conversations he made his mother out to be an angel. She would've loved to have something like that, did Gullveig even have family anymore? She wasn't sure how long she was in that lily, could it be that she was simply born in the lily? Could flowers do that? Gullveig knew close to nothing about fairies, Loki had been the one to bring up the suggestion. So captivated by the images in those books, Gullveig would imitate them. Fairies looked so graceful, would someone remember her?
She sets the ladybird down on the ground beside her, watching it crawl away towards the opening of the tree. Hopefully it'll find some good flowers today, the flowers always smelled nicer after it rains. Gullveig reaches out, brushing Loki's hair out his eyes. He seemed very lonely but she couldn't think as to why, he had a brother, a mother and a father. She believed Loki was bound to have friends as well, so self-isolating. Gullveig had a hunch that being the son of a king was frustrating and stressful, her face flushes as Loki smiles in his sleep. She retracts her hand, ignoring the burning sensation in her cheeks. Not to mention, it might be difficult being so handsome. Gullveig was convinced that was just another problem in Loki's vast sea of problems. She hugged her knees close to her chest, looking out at the trees.
Gullveig didn't feel particularly pretty, she wasn't even sure what that feeling was like. She had only ever seen herself in the reflection of the royal library windows and in the shiny gold surfaces of Loki's many furniture. She felt a bit silly worrying over this now seeing as she had bigger problems to deal with, just as big as Loki from before at least. She woke up in a strange place with little to no memory of who she was or where she came from, she didn't have the time to worry about her hair or if her dress was nice. She looks back at Loki who still smiled in his sleep, whatever just happened in those dreams of his must've made things better. Maybe he was having fun with his friends or maybe walking around with his mother, something Gullveig never had.
A very vague memory of hushed voices in the dead of night, a man and a woman. Gullveig had no idea who they were but she knew they were somehow connected to her, she remembered the sun shining through tinted violet glass. An old shoe in the middle of nowhere, that was all. Just images, her eyes water. Why couldn't she remember? Why would anyone abandon her? What sort of people abandon children in the middle of nowhere? Gullveig sniffles, wiping her tears before they had the chance to fall. It wasn't as if she was completely alone in the world, if she was this small than there was a guarantee there would be others. Right? She buried her face in her knees, letting her tears soak into the skirt of her dress. She had Loki as well, he was here.
Loki was rather stiff at times but she couldn't help but adore the little boy in his eyes, the one she saw the moment he put her into that jar that night. He said that he had always loved fairy tales when he was younger, that he sometimes stayed out late to catch fairies. Gullveig laughs silently, looks like his nightly hunting came to fruition eventually. She looks out the opening of the tree, hearing the humming of bees in the air. There were some birds out there too, better be careful around them.
''Good morning Gullveig.''
Gullveig smiles at the sound of Loki's voice.
Tumblr media
''We've been walking forever!''
Gullveig was getting increasingly more bored with each step, she didn't like how big the world was. Loki couldn't help but chuckle, looking back for a moment as he walked through the tall grass. From down here they looked like trees, no doubt from Loki's real height they looked like absolutely nothing. Just a field of green, Gullveig found herself imagining being up their. She bets the big world was even more beautiful than the small one, she could do so many more things if she were bigger.
''It's only been a couple of hours Gullveig.''
She let out a sigh as she climbs over the branch that was obstructing their path.
''I can see the positive aspects of having wings now. Just imagine, flying around the sky!''
Loki hums in what sounded like approval, Gullveig saw a few stems of dandelions up ahead. There was bound to be some creatures lurking around this area.
''The thought has crossed my mind.''
Gullveig was in awe of the sheer size of the dandelions, stood tall like trees. Softly billowing in the summer breeze, they had reached the top of the hill. If she could get higher up she could probably see all the way down the hill, Loki said the scholar lived on the other side. What sort of man lives on his own in the woods? Must be lonely, hopefully he has someone that visits him. Maybe he would enjoy having her and Loki over for a visit, Loki said that the scholar knew a lot if not everything about fairies. Perhaps he's met some too, she smiles to herself. Imagining where the fairies might live, it is bound to be beautiful. She turned around, looking at the distance that they had trekked for the day. It wasn't getting dark just yet, she had no idea what the time was but must be around midday. Gullveig could just about see the top of the golden palace glistening in the sun, not much more than that. Does Loki miss home? She hums, turning around only to be greeted by a rather large insect.
''Oh!''
A buzzing bee hovered in front of her, she was in awe of it's size. They always looked so small from far away, the bee lands in front of her. Cleaning it's face with it's little feat, it looked so sweet. Gullveig was aware that some are afraid of them but she couldn't see why they would be, such gorgeous little things. Beautiful yellow fuzz, it's wings so lovely. Gullveig flinches as Loki appeared in front of her, his dagger pointed towards the lone bee.
''Stay behind me!''
Gullveig couldn't help but giggle, she noticed the slight flush in his cheeks. Perhaps he had noticed that it was just a harmless bee and not a wasp, wasps are more dangerous in Gullveig's opinion. She gently pressed down on Loki's hand, getting him to lower the dagger.
''It's alright, it won't hurt us.''
The bee buzzes joyfully as Gullveig took a step forward, her hand outstretched. Was it's head just as soft as it looked? Loki sheathes his weapon for now but she was aware that he wasn't entirely trusting, made sense. One shouldn't trust just any insect, ants were the worst. They have no regard for you, just crawl up your legs. As sweet looking as they can be, she wasn't too fond of how clingy they were. Don't feed the ants, they will just bring the rest of their friends and then you'll have to feed them too.
''Such a sweet hum you have Mr. Bee.''
Gullveig softly strokes the top of the bee's head, right between it's big eyes. She could see herself in them, was it drinking from the dandelions with it's friends? The bee moves forward and nuzzles up against her leg, Gullveig giggles and gives it's head a soft scratch. The bee looked big enough to carry her, she always wondered what it would be like to fly through the sky. Would it let her? She rips a small strip from the bottom of her dress and ties back her hair, she had acknowledged that having long hair like this could be inconvenient. She imagined the wind blowing her hair in Loki's face, how unfortunate would that be? She wished she had some pins to keep it in place but she doubts that there were any made in her size. Gullveig stepped away from the bee, being careful of it's wings. It didn't seem to mind, just buzzed away. She decided to be brave and began mounting the bee with a smile, they would get to the scholar's house a lot faster like this right?
''Woah- Hey, what do you think you're doing?!''
''Come on, it'll be fun!''
She held out her hand in hopes that he would take it, join her but Loki just folded his arms.
''I am not getting on that bee.''
Gullveig shrugs, the bee seemed to understand that Loki wasn't going to come and it's wing's began flapping.
''Fine, I will leave you to walk.''
Loki's eyes widened as the bee began it's ascend, he was quick to approach the bee. Gullveig wished he wouldn't be afraid to try new things, this was an adventure for the two of them. Even Loki said so himself that he's never been on a proper adventure before, wouldn't he love to go home with this as one of his many memories? Gullveig would've, without a doubt.
''Wait!''
Loki mounts the bee, sitting just behind her. Gullveig feels his chest pressed up against her back, she hadn't really thought this through. Now she had to sit in this position for a good while, depends on how quick this sweet little bee can fly. Her cheeks turn apple red, Loki would have to hold onto her. She flinches as he wraps his arm around her waist, Gullveig was so aware of where his fingers were. She smiles, grabbing fistfuls of the bee's soft fur as it began ascending again. It felt odd, being so weightless, their legs dangled from the sides. Loki was quick to tuck his in, pressing his knees into the bee's side to keep himself still. Gullveig did the same as she began seeing the tops of the dandelions. All the other bees busy drinking away, this was wonderful. She could see everything from up here, Loki squeezed the fabric of her dress in his hands. Was he afraid? Surely this view must look familiar to him.
''Do you know how to ride this thing?!''
Gullveig giggles and shook her head, giving the bee's fur a light tug.
''No but it's never too late to learn!''
Loki was quick to cling to her as the bee took off, it's wings flapping at rapid speeds. Gullveig was in awe of the scenery, the mass of white and yellow dandelions. The rush of the wind in her face, was this what the fairies felt like all the time? Must be, they can fly whenever they like. She looks over her shoulder to see Loki smiling at the ground, transfixed on the flowers as they pass over them. She loved this feeling, being able to fly through the sky was so freeing. If she had her own wings, there was no way she would ever stop flying. The bee quickly descends, flying straight down towards the ground.
''Pull up!''
Gullveig laughs heartily as the bee pulls up and began flitting between the flowers, dodging them left and right. She hoped Loki wasn't getting dizzy back there, she reached her hand out as they passed the puffballs. Her hand sent the seeds flying as they flew past, her small world was so beautiful from this height. That she hardly ever gets to see it this way made her sad, Gullveig would love to jump between the dandelion tops. Sleep in their soft petals, a part of her began missing the golden palace. Her little spoon that stood on Loki's bedside table, he had been so kind as to make her a place to sleep. Gullveig hadn't thought she would ever miss it but somehow she does, waking up to him smiling felt nice. She breathed in deeply, feeling the wind in her hair. There were things she had to leave behind but the memories would always stay, she was sure of it.
''Woo!''
Gullveig stuck both her arms up, as if trying to grab fistfuls of the sun. Enjoying the warmth, she could never get tired of this feeling. She laughs and leans back against Loki's chest, this might be the best part of their journey.
''Put your arms down!''
Tumblr media
They had been flying for a good while, still not completely dark but the sun was setting. Gullveig was becoming increasingly more nervous as they made more and more distance, the bee seems to be a bit nervous as well. They weren't exactly in a nice area anymore, the scholar's cabin was within sight. They would get there by morning if they continued but it was better if they made camp for the night, Gullveig casts her eyes onto the ground as the bee slowly descends to the ground.
''What's happening?''
The bee softly lands on the ground with a loud buzz, Gullveig nudged Loki in hopes that he'd get the hint. Thankfully he does and jumps off the bee's back, holding out his hands to help her down. He was very sweet to do so, Gullveig felt his hands supported her waist as she jumped down. The bee continues buzzing, more erratically.  Loki quickly let go of Gullveig's waist, taking a step away from her.
''I think it's scared, maybe it's too far from home.''
The bee turns around, facing her. It nuzzled up against her legs, vibrating strongly as it hums.
''It's okay, you can go back.''
Gullveig strokes the bee's head softly, she was going to miss it but maybe she'll see it again soon. The bee seemed to understand, quickly taking off and flying back the way they came. It must live near the dandelion field, Gullveig wondered what the bee was going to tell it's friends. Maybe it'll tell them all about the litle humans that rode around on it's back all day, the thought was amusing. Loki huffs and began walking towards the bushes in front of them. They could cut through them in order to arrive at the cabin quicker, hopefully they could camp up in the trees. Gullveig was quick to run after him, not wanting to lag behind.
''I am never riding a bee again, ever.''
Gullveig giggles and softly nudges him with her shoulder, he huffs again.
''Why? It wasn't so bad!''
She was convinced that Loki was the type of person to deny themselves all fun and adventure, except for this current one of course. Loki had told her that he didn't have that many friends growing up and that his own brother had often tried to get out of having to hang around him or play with him as they got older, it was easy for someone to grow bitterly. She wanted him to have fun, Gullveig wanted him to admit that he had fun for once.
''I-''
Loki cut himself off, turning around to face her. She recalls the moment she looked back, seeing how wide and beautiful his smile was. How hard was it for him to just admit that he found the bee-ride thrilling, she didn't shy away from showing her joy. Loki shouldn't have to hide his own, she wouldn't allow it.
''I saw you smile!''
Loki narrows his eyes, instantly turning back around and walking onwards into the thick brush ahead.
''I will say no more on the matter!''
Gullveig couldn't help but roll her eyes, running her fingers through her hair. She should really braid it or some how tuck it away so it won't get tangled in the branches, the bushes were very thick together. It looked so dark inside, Loki stops for a moment. Staring into the darkness ahead of them, Gullveig didn't like the look of it all. It was going to be night time soon and that's when the bad things come out, she remembers that. Perhaps they could rest in one the branches, keep off the ground. They could weave together a shelter from the leaves if they wanted.
''We'll have to go through...''
Gullveig hid behind him, holding onto his arm. She felt safer having him to accompany her, going in there alone wouldn't be the smartest idea. The wind softly howls as it travels through the branches of the bushes, she shivers at the sound of it. So haunting, ghostly.
''I'll protect you.''
Loki smiled, she trusted him.

Cole Sprouse on How ‘Riverdale’ Transformed Him From Disney Child Star to Leading Man
Most child actors don’t thrive in Hollywood past puberty. Cole Sprouse opted out on his own terms. The 2005 hit Disney Channel sitcom “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” turned Cole and his twin brother, Dylan, into the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of their generation. But after the series and its spinoff wrapped, Cole was ready for something new.
Sprouse tells this story between cigarette breaks while sitting on the “Riverdale” set in Vancouver. The show became an instant hit for The CW Network when it debuted in the winter of 2017. Sprouse’s role as the sardonic narrator Jughead has allowed him to reinvent himself as an actor in his 20s. This year, he starred in his first grown-up film, “Five Feet Apart,” as a man with cystic fibrosis who falls in love with a patient down the hall. The drama, distributed by CBS Films in March, became a sleeper hit, grossing almost $46 million at the domestic box office.
“It’s very difficult to make the jump from Disney child star to serious leading man in Hollywood,” says Justin Baldoni, the director of “Five Feet Apart.”
Sprouse spent the first 18 years of his life acting, guided by other people’s decisions. “My mother and father divorced at a young age,” he says. “I never knew them to be together. Our mother was really the main fuel for us to pursue acting. We booked a diaper commercial, and that got the ball rolling.” One of his earliest professional memories is from the ABC sitcom “Grace Under Fire,” where he shared the role of the family’s infant son with his brother. “Oh, we were exploiting child labor laws,” Sprouse says with a smirk Having two identical boys meant that they could collectively work a full day, by splitting the job in half..
Tumblr media
That was an arrangement they used often — although sometimes they’d take roles on their own (such as when Cole portrayed Ross’ son on “Friends”). Their big break was getting cast together in the 1999 comedy “Big Daddy,” playing an abandoned kid adopted by a boorish bachelor in the form of Adam Sandler. Sprouse recalls how one night during the shoot, a fire alarm went off in the hotel the cast was staying at in New York. “Adam Sandler carried me on his shoulder down 45 flights of stairs, which was really cute,” he says. “We were taught every single bad word. So when my brother and I went back to school, we swore like sailors.”
Most of the time, they were homeschooled. “I don’t feel like I missed out on the United States public high school education,” Sprouse says. “My brother and I both have ADHD, and I needed one-on-one attention from a tutor.” Getting their own sitcom on Disney Channel made their careers explode. “It was the golden ticket,” Sprouse says. “At the time, being the leads of a sitcom as kids was the most stable job we could think about in the industry. In terms of technical acting, it’s only 30 minutes long. My brother and I were really thankful for it.”
They were able to avoid the scandals that consume other Disney stars because of their strong family network. “Cole and I had each other,” Dylan says. “We were blessed to have someone experiencing the same thing at the same time, as an objectivity to the reality of it all.” Dylan recalls one day, as a teenager, getting into a drag-out fistfight with his brother between takes — it was broken up when a fan asked them for a photo backstage. “It was such a weird and funny moment that we actually calmed down, laughing at each other.”
Tumblr media
They spent six years at Disney, with three seasons on “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody” and another three on the spinoff, “The Suite Life on Deck.” Despite an offer to do a third series with Disney, Cole and Dylan knew they wanted to attend college, and both were accepted to NYU. Still, it took some adjustment. “The amount of rumors that were spread about Dylan and I were incredible,” says Cole, who heard stories about how he’d fallen down the stairs at the school library. “When you’re a public figure, people use you to build their identities. And I think that was a bit daunting. But also because I’d been homeschooled, I had no idea what it was like to interact with other people socially.”
(..) But Sprouse isn’t in a hurry to graduate from “Riverdale.” He says the show has given him a renewed appreciation for acting, one he couldn’t have when he was younger, because he was so focused on being his family’s breadwinner.
“I’m somewhat of a workaholic,” Sprouse says. “Maybe that’s my child-star brain, where I just can’t stop thinking about being a commodity.”
Tumblr media
On the day of our set visit, the four “Riverdale” actors are shooting at a house on the outskirts of Vancouver that’s been converted into an ominous location. This episode, which will air in the fall, is a tribute to Luke Perry, who played Archie’s dad and died in March at the age of 52 from a stroke. Sprouse has talked about what Perry meant to him, and how his passing affected him deeply. Between takes, the actors are mostly quiet.
Sprouse says that these scenes — which involve Jughead helping Archie say goodbye to his father — have required some thought. “The important line we’ve all been trying to draw is how to separate, how we can portray real emotions, but in the eyes of the characters,” he says. “If I was making this an entire sob story about my relationship with Luke, it wouldn’t be a job well done. My job is to do it in the eyes of Jughead.” And he doesn’t think Perry would approve of tears. “Luke was the kind of guy who would not like people crying about him,” Sprouse says. “I hope this episode does him justice, but I think the way we lived with him does him justice as well.”
Dylan thinks that Cole could become “a great cinematographer or director.” When he’s not acting, Cole sidelines as a professional photographer, shooting spreads for magazines and fashion brands like Moncler, which sent him to Iceland for a campaign. “Most of the people that I speak to initially don’t know him from his acting,” says his photography agent, Glenn Wassall, who represents Annie Leibovitz. He describes Sprouse’s aesthetic as “fashion within landscape,” as in a portrait of a woman bundled in a glamorous coat against a backdrop of ice-covered mountains.
Cole could see himself working again with Dylan, who has also gone back to acting, with an indie film, “Tyger Tyger,” out next year. “We’ve talked about it,” Cole says, adding that it wouldn’t be a reboot or a reunion for Disney. “The whole kitschy twin thing, I don’t think that really sells anymore.” He explains what would convince them: “It’s about feeling passionate for acting again. If it’s a cool project, I don’t have a problem with that.”

36 Hours: 36 Hours in Mendocino County
Tumblr media
Ninety miles north of San Francisco, Mendocino County is just far enough away to have narrowly escaped the Bay Area’s radical transformation during the tech boom years. In contrast to other formerly quiet Northern California backwaters, Mendocino maintains its rural identity and eccentricities, including its longstanding status as one of the country’s major marijuana-producing regions. Where there is big news, it’s largely culinary. The 30-year-old chef at Elk’s Harbor House Inn was recently named a James Beard award semifinalist for Best Chef in the West. Besides the Harbor House’s eight- to 12-course, $150 per person prix fixe dinners, there are cheesemakers, upstart breweries, exceptional farm stands — notably Fort Bragg’s Nye Ranch and Caspar’s Fortunate Farm — and farm-inspired restaurants, like the long-awaited, soon-to-open Fog Eater Cafe, which began as a farm pop-up, and will serve “California cuisine with a Southern twang.” After years of population stagnation, young people are moving in, or coming home, and committing themselves to Mendocino’s fertile soil and sea. It’s a second wave back-to-the-land movement and a welcome reprieve from the Bay Area’s buzz.
Friday
1) 3:30 p.m. Tall trees
Take Highway 128 through the Anderson Valley, to Hendy Woods State Park, where you can stretch your legs beneath the awe-inspiring giant redwoods or take a dip in the Navarro River. Then, backtrack to Boonville’s Pennyroyal Farm, the sister farmstead to one of Mendocino’s most beloved wineries, Navarro Vineyards. Sample rich goat and sheep milk cheeses, fresh and aged, exceptional pinot noir, and farm-made pickles and preserves. Sit out back, beside a gurgling fountain, and watch sheep meander beneath the vines. In the spring, a farm tour (11 a.m. daily) offers the overwhelming cuteness of nursing lambs and kids.
2) 6 p.m. Supper stop
For dinner, reserve a table at the Boonville Hotel, a former roadhouse that’s now a beautiful, family-owned inn with a wide porch, flickering fireplaces when the weather’s cool, and a seductive patio garden for outdoor dining during the warm months. The restaurant’s new chef, Perry Hoffman, is from Sonoma’s James Beard award-winning SHED and, before that, Napa’s Michelin-starred Étoile. Here, his prix-fixe menus (starting at $58) include lively dishes and unexpected flavor combinations. Imagine mussels with charred cabbage, grapefruit, fennel and seaweed or a whole stuffed quail with artichokes, shiitake mushrooms, bolting kale and brown rice vinegar.
3) 9 p.m. Change is brewing
After winding through the redwoods and along the coast, head for the former logging town of Fort Bragg, for some small town night life. The 135-year-old Golden West is a dive bar that was bought in 2015 by a couple who grew up locally and returned after living in Los Angeles. The bar has maintained its vintage character (neon signs, shuffleboard and pool tables, faded black-and-white photos of logging scenes) while upgrading its extensive liquor cabinet and serving excellent cocktails, and has occasional but unexpectedly good live music, as well as a Sunday Bloody Mary bar. Or, for a family-friendly pub in a tucked-away location, seek out Mendocino’s newest brewery, Overtime Brewery, which teams with Nye Ranch in making its exotic seasonal beers, like the “Thistle Dew” artichoke ale or Nye Ranch Cucumber Batch. Take a couple of crowlers — a 32-ounce can filled from the tap and sealed on site — of your favorite beer to go.
Saturday
4) 8 a.m. Super bloom
Tucked into a strip mall, Cafe Jaavy — the younger sister of the longtime local favorite, Los Gallitos — has colorful oilcloth tablecloths, a salsa bar and a breakfast menu that includes savory Mexican breakfasts like chilaquiles (tortilla chips simmered in a flavorful, mildly spicy sauce, served with beans and eggs, $9.50) and standout huevos rancheros with chorizo ($9.50), plus sweeter offerings like banana and berry crepes ($8.99) and generous smoothies ($4.50) made with fresh fruit. The Tropical, with mango, apple, pineapple, melon, chili and lime is particularly tasty. Then, head for the 47-acre Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where 124 species of rhododendrons put on a spectacular show in April and May.
5) 11 a.m. Sweet soak
Drive south to Mendocino village to walk its photogenic streets and gawk at the immaculately preserved Victorians. Pop into Frankie’s for a scoop of locally made Cowlick’s ice cream. Among the cafe’s 16 rotating flavors are chai, Campari grapefruit sorbet, yellow cake batter and mushroom. Then, take a restorative soak in Sweetwater Spa’s communal — and clothing optional — eight-person redwood tub, sweat in the cedarwood sauna, or indulge in a massage (starting at $110 for 50 minutes). There are also private tubs ($25 per hour), which are enclosed but open to the sky; if a starry soak is your thing, Sweetwater is open until 9 p.m.
6) 12:30 p.m. Pizza pit stop
Next door, Cafe Beaujolais’s weekend-only takeout window, the Brickery, serves pizza ($13) with big, perfectly charred air pockets and daring toppings, like Moroccan-spiced rabbit and garlicky New Haven-style white clam pizza. On sunny days, the backyard garden is idyllic for sharing a pie and savoring a glass of rosé or a craft cider.
7) 2 p.m. Glass for the masses
Fort Bragg’s signature attraction, a former town dump that was transformed by time into a beach of gleaming sea glass, has been badly picked over and is no longer the dazzling sight it once was. For a glimpse of its former glory, head to the odd little International Sea Glass Museum south of town, where Captain Cass sells bags of so-called Seed Glass ($4.95) to replenish the beach’s supply. Across Highway 1, the Glass Fire Gallery displays fantastic blown-glass creations in the form of jellyfish chandeliers and mushroom-shaped table lamps. While in the area, go for a stroll along the newly opened Noyo Headlands Coastal Trail. After more than a century of the headlands being occupied by a sprawling mill site, the town now has access to its coastal bluffs, where California poppies blaze orange in the spring, when it’s also possible to spot migrating whales spouting offshore.
8) 3:30 p.m. Local treasure
For a dose of Mendocino’s wonderful eccentricity, visit The Larry Spring Museum of Common Sense Physics, a tiny two-room storefront museum that celebrates the life and work of the local inventor, lay scientist and World War II transport pilot, Larry Spring. In the same small building, Lost Coast Found has a charming selection of vintage home goods: midcentury stereos, cheery 1970s-era coffee cups, along with used books, postcards and miscellanea.
9) 5:30 p.m. Fresh caught
Have an early, California-style dinner by the water in Noyo Harbor, where you have a difficult choice of dining options. For fresh, crispy fish and chips, bundle up and sit on the riverside deck at Sea Pal Cove, where dinner guests include sea gulls, there are $5 pints of high-end craft beer, and views of passing fishing — and, in season, whale-watching — boats. A few doors down, Princess Seafood Market & Deli is a woman-owned and -run fishing operation with its own boat and seafood restaurant. Princess serves reasonably priced, locally caught seafood, including whole Dungeness crab ($27.95), barbecued Royal Miyagi oysters ($12.95 for a half dozen, and a grilled prawn po boy ($15.95). During chilly coastal evenings, the deli’s tented seating area provides heat lamps and freshly laundered blankets. Then, pick up a Coast Packet and take a gamble on a local performance. One of the joys of small town cultural life is the unexpectedness of what’s available from week to week, whether it’s the wonderful independent Flynn Creek Circus or a riotous political play at the Mendocino Theatre Company.
Sunday
10) 9 a.m. The Greenwood Good Life
On your way through Mendocino, grab a takeout breakfast — an organic housemade bagel with lox and “all the veggies” ($12.50) or “market-inspired” quiche ($8) — at Mendocino’s Good Life Cafe. Sip your coffee to-go as you drive a breathtaking stretch of Highway 1 to the village of Elk, population 200. Tote your breakfast down to Greenwood State Beach to sit on a piece of driftwood, look out over the volatile Pacific and take a long breath of sea air. Then, visit Elk Greenwood Museum and Visitor Center — originally the town’s post office — to learn some Greenwood lore from the center’s knowledgeable docents.
11) 11 a.m. Wine Down
Take Philo-Greenwood Road back to Anderson Valley and taste your way out of town. The options can be overwhelming, but the redwood tasting room at Toulouse Vineyards and Winery is especially beautiful and its wines are excellent renditions of classic local varietals: Alsatian whites and pinot noirs. For three wineries in one Spanish-style plaza, stop at The Madrones complex, where Drew Family Cellars, Smith-Story Winery and the newly opened Long Meadow Ranch, which has estate-grown Burgundian varietals, share a plaza.
12) 12:30 p.m. History lesson
Cut east over Route 253 — a spectacular 16-mile drive across hilltops of moss-draped California live oaks — to Ukiah, Mendocino’s 16,000-person county seat. Dedicated to an extraordinary, but largely forgotten painter, the Grace Hudson Museum and Sun House displays Hudson’s striking and distinctly empathetic portraits of native peoples and immigrants, exhibits the work of local artists, and offers tours of Hudson’s Arts and Crafts home, which she called Sun House.
13) 2 p.m. Buddhist brunch
Head south to the City of 10,000 Buddhas, a former California State Mental Hospital that is now a Buddhist community and monastery. The campus’s distinctive arched entrance is undergoing renovation, but its roaming peacocks, evocative institutional architecture and Jyun Kang Vegetarian Restaurant, which serves tasty vegetarian dishes to a mostly local crowd, remain. Or hop down the 101 to Hopland, where Rock Seas serves an ever-changing menu that riffs on brunch classics — like coconut French Toast with star anise, coconut, brown sugar and mango ($12).
Lodging
In the last two years, two long-awaited new hotels have opened on the Mendocino coast. The Harbor House Inn, in Elk, is a 1916 redwood home which was originally built by the local logging company and designed to showcase the beauty of the region’s lumber. After an eight-year renovation, the inn reopened in May of 2018 with 10 rooms (starting at $355, breakfast included) and a destination restaurant.

Update: Looking to watch the halftime show? Sorry…you missed it! But to make sure you don’t miss a minute of what’s turning out to be a great match, use our Super Bowl live stream guide now.
Not really fussed who of the Chiefs and the 49ers are leading in Florida? Is the only reason you want to tune in to the Super Bowl to see the halftime show? We can’t blame you – the spectacle of the world’s biggest stars taking to the field for a historic performance at the heart of American culture is truly breathtaking, and we’re in for a real treat this year as Jennifer Lopez and Shakira take to the stage for 2020.
Over the years, the Super Bowl has grown larger than football itself, and from commercials to celebrity appearances, it’s the Super Bowl halftime show that captures the wonder of audiences across the world every year. From the setlist to the costumes, the surprise appearances (we’re talking the Janet Jackson kind and the Destiny’s Child kind) to the mind-boggling production value, the Super Bowl halftime show is a pinnacle of entertainment. Even if you’re not a football fan, you’ll be talking about the big game.
A Super Bowl halftime slot is reserved for the super stars of our age, the true musical legends of timeless appeal that grace the grass every year for a short bout of explosive showmanship. It’s a high octane reel of each star-studded hit in their catalogue, keeping the adrenaline pumped while the football itself takes a pause.
If your true excitement kicks in once that second quarter’s over and done with and the stage starts rolling onto the field, you’ll want to find out how to watch the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show online. Plus, if you’re not in the US there are more ways than ever to catch the performance live
Super Bowl 2020: when is it, where is it, who’s playing
Who’s performing the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show?
This year Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will take up the 2020 Super Bowl halftime helm, following on from Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi of 2019. On Jennifer Lopez’s side, we’re looking forward to some classic tracks banging out across the stadium, from If You Had My Love to Let’s Get Loud. But we have to admit that opening the show with the initial tones of JLo’s most recent Baila Conmigo would be particularly epic. Plus, is it too much to ask for a little Jenny From The Block transition?
Once Shakira hits the stage you can only expect things to get even bigger. While Hips Don’t Lie may be a little obvious to lead with, we’re certainly hoping we’ll hear the classic played out across the world at some point in the show. In general, Shakira has been a little quieter than her co-star over the last few years, last touring with her El Dorado album in 2017. That said, we’re expecting some later tracks to hit the speakers, with medleys of She Wolf and Dare being all but loaded into the playlist already.
The 2020 Super Bowl halftime show will mark a historic moment for Latin music as well, with both performers celebrating Latina women everywhere from the heart of Miami. You can also expect a few entrances from each artists’ Spanish language repertoire, from La Tortura to Dinero.
What time will the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show be?
This year’s Super Bowl halftime show will start at around 8.10pm ET / 5.10pm PT / 1.10am GMT. The show usually packs a mega setlist, potential surprise guests, and a whole concert’s worth of choreography into anything from 10 to 20 minutes.

Our top 5 best Super Bowl halftime shows in history
We’ve revisited the archives to recall some of our favourite halftime shows of all time. And you won’t even read the words ‘Janet Jackson’ or ‘wardrobe malfunction’ once!
1. Michael Jackson may have invented the modern halftime show back in 1993 but Prince perfected the spectacle with his performance in 2007. On a stage in the shape of the ‘Artist Formerly Known As Prince’ symbol, His Royal Badness opened with Queen’s We Will Rock You before switching to his own Let’s Go Crazy. Prince ended his set in the pouring rain with Purple Rain.
2. Beyonce shook things up with a stage of all female performers when she was joined on stage in 2013 with her former Destiny’s Child bandmates. Together they performed her solo hit song Single Ladies and Beyonce ended her set with Halo as the finale.
3. NSYNC, Aerosmith and Britney Speaks took things to a whole new level when they teamed up for dance-offs, extra surprise guests, handheld fireworks, and some of the most spectacular boyband dancing you’ve ever seen. The star studded show was the first to allow the audience onto the field during the halftime performance, so things felt a little extra special as well.
4. Diana Ross left the stadium sitting on the side of a damn helicopter, and if that’s not the most diva halftime performance to ever occur we’ll eat our helmet. Following 14 costume changes, an airlifted rendition of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough and an enormous gold cape, Take Me Higher kicks off and we see Ross jumping into the helicopter that’s just landed in the middle of the field.
5. In 2015, Katy Perry was joined on stage with Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott. Perry performed her hit song Firework – though her set will likely be remembered for years to come due to the costumed shark dancing in the background.

No Katy, no.
I used to get really fired up when people said that they didn’t like an artist’s new sound because as someone who has grown up writing songs, I believe that there is a natural progression that everyone’s music style goes through. Girls my age aren’t still walking around in jelly sandals and making Scooby key rings on the weekend so why did everyone kick up a fuss about how Miley Cyrus decided she wanted to sing about weed and her dead pets? She can’t strut around in a blonde wig forever, she grew up and  because she did in the limelight, people who evolved all the time in their fashion tastes and personality couldn’t understand. They couldn’t see why she would do the same as a young girl in her twenties trying to rebel against the tiny box people put her in.
The second album in an artists’ career is seen as the make or break. Will they get progressively better or worse? Will it be a clunk of songs that fill out the verse- chorus- bridge formula and be played to death on commercial radio and clubs or will it tell a story?
I’m going to talk about mainstream pop music here because today I decided while I would do my last minute assignment I’d check out Katy Perry’s new album. I was very optimistic as there have been some great second albums that I have waited for with baited breath this year such as HAIM and Lorde. Not second albums but nonetheless deserving of mention here, were the great or up and coming return of Alt – J, Harry Styles in his much preferred solo career, Kendrick Lamar, The Gorillaz and Phoenix to name a few. In my humble opinion, 2017 in its first half is a promising and epic year of music. I can only hope that it will be topped off with the legendary sweetness to my ears that would be a full first album from the sweet and soulful Miss Meg Mac.
So although Chained to the Rhythm for me was a 5 out of ten stars and ‘Bon Appetit’s music video was mildly aesthetically pleasing but predominately disturbing to say the least, I liked Katy Perry’s care –free attitude and rebellious hair cut. I believed there would be some hidden treasures in the album like her previous gems ‘By the Grace of God’ and ‘Legendary Lovers’ from Prism and ‘Circle the Drain’ and ‘Pearl’ from Teenage Dream. Her lyrics always resonated with the teenage white girl in me and I’ll admit that fourteen-year-old me did dress up as a cat and attend her Prism world tour. But so did the rest of my demographic in the Brisbane area, haters.
So when I let the album play out on my Apple Music as I endeavoured to  discuss in 2000 words the correlation between journalism and globalisation, my mouth turned down inch by inch through fifteen tracks of soulless and ‘eh its been done’ electronic pop music. They all sounded the same and now begins the inner struggle with myself as I wanted to applaud her for taking risks and evolving in her music but I couldn’t help but feel she was selling out. I turned over to her ‘one of the boys’ album to mourn and remember lines such as ‘You’re like an Indian summer in the middle of winter, a hard candy with a surprise centre’ accompanied by simple and charming guitar strums. Katy where have you gone?
The theory of a supposed juxtaposition of her and Miley Cyrus’s persona is a tough one. This year we have seen the white clad child star emerge from a chrysalis after to her musical hiatus to present us with the retrospective and dreamy track that is ‘Malibu’. I am dancing around in anticipation for her follow up album. People have been speculating that Katy is at the same stage that Miley was in 2013 in her career where she goes a little hay wire, stepping away from  the cheeky girl next door with in – depth and wide ranging vocals.  Whilst Miley Cyrus has left her short cropped hair and nipple pasties behind her to become a sweet darling who includes her doggies in her music videos!!!! Oh praise, you can like her again!
I  want to reject this as you may be aware I’m not one to endorse putting girls or boys for that matter, into boxes and I get and admire artistic freedom. But there is a small part in me that hopes Katy gets it out of her system some time soon and  produces another album with all unique songs with compelling narrative causing me to once again marvel at her cheeky and clever lyrics. It’s a real achievement for artists to produce albums that make you want to listen to every single second until you’re hitting repeat over and over.
I’m sorry, Katy but today I’m disappointed.
But hey, you do you girl. My fingers are crossed for the next one.
