Wait a minute. I'm rewatching good omens and the Lord personally gave Aziraphale the flaming sword. We know that Aziraphale gave it to the humans to protect them, and then in episode 3, we start off the opening sequence with the Lord shining her light on Aziraphale to ask about it.
She asked him about the sword and he mumbles some weird answer about not knowing where it is. Must be around here somewhere.
Aziraphale lied to the Lord. And the light that was shining over him left.
And then in the modern day, Aziraphale whishes to speak to the Almighty and he can't reach her. The show gives the implication that the Almighty hasn't been talking to anyone and can't be reached by anyone, but... the only one who WANTS to speak to her in the whole season is Aziraphale. And he can't reach her.
We've seen Crowley do his casual yelling at the sky at the Almighty, we know he still believes she's listening. But he doesn't expect her to answer.
And we know that in the biblical times anyway, the Almighty was still doing some talking to her angels and the humans because she told them about the rainbow.
Aziraphale would've been generally ignoring the Lord for 6000 years if only to avoid the sword question again. And then as life went on, to avoid being caught about Crowley and the arrangement. But when he does want to talk, she doesn't answer. She hasn't talked to him for 6000 years.
Idk where I'm going with this but I think it fits into my theory that Aziraphale is gonna fall this upcoming season. The Lord has already turned away from him, even if gently. He still has her love and support (the notpocolypse).
But she won't talk to him.

I’m going to sound literally insane but I have a theory about what the “ineffable plan” might be. Is it right? Probably not but my fevered brain feels like it has some merit to it.
Anyway, in the book Crowley suggests that “Maybe it's all part of a great big ineffable plan. All of it. You, me, him, everything. Some great big test to see if what you've built all works properly, eh? You start thinking: it can’t be a great cosmic game of chess, it has to be just very complicated Solitaire.” and it is a quote that I’m quite sad didn’t make it into the show (I’m pretty sure). But back onto todays nonsensical rant: my proposal is- what if the Almightys plan is to try to make people/celestial/occult beings realize they need to work together and move away from the binary of being right or wrong. It links two of the major (imo) themes of the story in that a) it’s about connection and love and that and b) there’s no such thing as “good” or “bad” on a moral scale, there’s only shades of grey. What if the Almighty let the fall happen (as Crowley says earlier in the exchange mentioned earlier: “why did it happen, eh? I mean, it didn’t have to, did it?… Anyone who could build a universe in six days isn’t going to let a little thing like that happen. Unless they want it to, of course.”) to not only let the angels experience free will but to also let them learn, to work together, to love, to grow. What if they laced humans on earth with their range of morals beliefs, etc and showed how they, even when they are self declared enemies, can still work together? The most prominent point for the second idea is the bonds between Newt and Anathema, Shadwell and Madame Tracey, Beez and Gabriel, and obviously, Aziraphale and Crowley. I’ll talk about the witch/witch-hunter pairs first because I think the big thing here is that it all starts with humanity. Newt was essentially pulled into being a witch-hunter through circumstance, he never had any hatred for Anathema or any witch for that matter, it all just kinda happened (remind you of anyone sauntering vaguely downward???) but they’re both quick to accept the other for who they are. Shadwell took a little bit more time to realize that Madame Tracey was neither a witch nor evil. He just had to realize that they were both human and that she was, well, that she was kind. After realizing this, Shadwell began to change (def for the better), he left an order he had been with since the 60s because he realsied it was outdated and pretty much pointless in the scheme of everything, of humanity. I bring these two pairs because they remind me slightly of Aziraphale and Crowley, and Beez and Gabriel respectively. I won’t go into too much more detail but these relationships show that the hatred between heaven and hell is arbitrary, angels and demons aren’t hereditary enemies, they don’t even have to be enemies, they just decided that’s what they needed to be. These relationships prove that there’s more than just good and evil because I don’t think that any of us would refer to either Crowley or Beelzebub as “evil” nor Aziraphale or Gabriel as purely “good”. That’s what the Almighty is trying to get everyone to understand that there is no good, there is no evil, there’s just US and that’s the only side worth fighting for.
I have so many reasons why this can’t be the ineffable plan but yeah. Anyway that leaves me with one question: why did they do any of it? Whats the point of starting a 6000 year long conflict to show that the way you’d started it all out was best even though you were the one who ruined it? Whats the point of creating an entire universe and then planning to destroy it to prove this point?
Unless the universe was the apple in Eden.
Thats what makes it ineffable

I had a fever dream that was terrible.
Scene: Aziraphale sits in a chair within a dimly lit room, bathed in a solitary holy light. He gazes intently into the darkness, unable to discern the person before him, who speaks first.
[Female Voice] Aziraphale, Principality Guardian of the Eastern Gate, come before the Almighty and demand that I halt the Second Coming and Armageddon. You claim you're willing to do anything to make it happen.
//Aziraphale appears determined and resolute.//
[Aziraphale] Indeed, humanity has made significant strides, yet they still have much to learn. They continue to evolve.
[Female Voice] Why are you so protective? Why would you risk everything to oppose eternity?
[Aziraphale] As you've mentioned, I am the Principality Guardian of the Eastern Gate. By definition, my very existence revolves around guidance and protection. If you didn't desire me to safeguard them, you shouldn't have sent me to Earth for that very purpose.
//The Female Voice chuckles.//
[Female Voice] You're quite right. However, in hindsight, I should not have crafted the Divine Plan before creating you Angels. Are you genuinely prepared to give anything without hesitation?
[Aziraphale] Yes, I am ready.
//The Female Voice loses her mirth.//
[Female Voice] Then this is my request: the love you hold for the Demon Crowley, you will bestow that love upon me. And before you respond, understand that granting me this love entails erasing all memories of him. Your recollections will be entirely rewritten. You shall never have known him, regardless of the passage of time or how well you come to know him again; you will never remember him, and your love for him will vanish.
//The Female Voice pauses for a moment.//
[Female Voice] Are you willing to grant me this without hesitation?
//Aziraphale speaks without hesitation, yet sadness fills his eyes.//
[Aziraphale] Yes, to save humanity, the Earth, time, and the universe, I will surrender my love for Crowley to you.
//The Female Voice sighs, seemingly hoping for hesitation from the angel.//
[Female Voice] With this offering, I shall cease Armageddon and halt the Second Coming. I thank you for this precious gift. Aziraphale, Principality Guardian of the Eastern Gate, I grant you mercy. You may now return to your peaceful life in the bookshop. I shall oversee heaven in your stead.
Scene transitions: A blinding light surrounds Aziraphale, and he finds himself back on Earth, standing in front of his bookshop. He enters it happily. Off-screen, the sound of books falling can be heard, and the camera turns to reveal Crowley and Muriel. Crowley is holding a stack of books for Muriel, who is on a ladder.
[Crowley] Angel?
//Crowley approaches Aziraphale with uncertainty.//
[Crowley] Aziraphale, what brings you here?
//Aziraphale smiles gently at him.//
[Aziraphale] What do you mean? This is my bookshop. The question, my dear friend, is: Who are you?

Posted earlier while musing, but actually now curious: The Almighty according to Good Omens... what do you all honestly think? I can’t decide their stance with all this.
Tumblr media
Maybe their plan is aimed toward the right thing in the end, and they trust Crowley and Aziraphale to figure it out? Or do they even care? Are they the root of the problem or is it just a corrupt system?
We’ve got the usual options, but...

Creation.
I made you
Sculpted your form, shaped your mind
Made you who you are
And for what?
For you to question me? Disobey me?
I had no choice but to cast you aside
You rebelled, and paid the price
What else would you have me do?
Master of it all, giving in to an angel
And a fallen one at that
.

I've just finished reading all of the theological essays under my post about Crowley being comforted by his story being written by a human writer who loves him and I have to say, you guys are all very interesting.
Some of you see the God in Good Omens to be separate from God in Real Life. Some of you think it's the same person. Some of you think that God isn't a person. Some of you think that it doesn't matter if God is a person. Some of you think Good Omens God (separate from Real God) can't be good or bad. Some of you think we can't know if Good Omens God is good or bad. Some of you think Real Life God can't be good or bad. Some of you think it doesn't matter if Real Life God (same as Good Omens God) is good or bad. Some of you wonder why everyone else is even asking these questions when we should be focusing on whether we ourselves are good people.
What an interesting fandom this is...
