The Locked Tomb: Early Nine House Headcanon

The Locked Tomb headcanon below the cut.

Okay, so a thing in The Locked Tomb series is that John Gaius is a Māori man who then goes on to do Space Imperialism. Now, I'd love to pick Muir's brain on her writing decisions here. (Read: I really want Alecto the Ninth to have some flashbacks to the early days of John's Empire.) But I do have a headcanon for part of what might have happened.

Alright, so I'm an American, and I'm old enough to remember 9/11. I remember the impact it had the country, the gist of which is that the country lost its damn mind, created several horrifying government agencies, and invaded multiple countries. Because We Had Been Attacked and Were At War (TM).

Now, this was all helped along by Bush amplifying the fear to get reelected - the news had this whole color-coded system for how likely we allegedly were to be attacked by terrorists that abruptly disappeared once Bush got his second term - and the oil industry and the military industrial complex looking to make big bucks off of the invasions.

And it's not to say that nobody knew what was happening was fucked up and wrong. I mean, I was a teenager, and I did. (Nobody listened to me. I was a teenager. And also Bush wanted that second term and the industries wanted to make money.)

But my point is, if people feel threatened, they're sign off on everything from the TSA to Homeland Security.

And this is America, which is a hegemonic imperialist global superpower that, all things consider, is extremely safe from war. Fuck, I think the last time America had actual foreign boots on the ground here was, what, the War of 1812? In spite of all the fear mongering, we've got two (2) land neighbors, and we've got good diplomatic relationships with both of them.

But The Empire of the Nine House? It's a bunch of space installations or surface installations that rely on oxygen pumps for everyone to Not Die.

My headcanon?

I think someone from one of the trillionaire FTL ships (or, more likely, one of their heirs) built a space empire of their own and attacked the Nine Houses. It wouldn't have been the Blood of Eden - they came later - but I think it's very conceivable that at some point in 10,000 year history of the series, the Nine Houses weren't the [only] major player in the galaxy.

And the Nine Houses prevail, but in the process, the Cohort flipped a planet to win. So then there's a population in jeopardy that has to be relocated somewhere. Now, forcibly relocating a population is genocide, but leaving a population on a planet after rendering it doomed is also bad. Ideally, one wouldn't flip a planet in the first place, but foreign policy runs on dealing with the fallout of the shitty decisions of other people. (In the sense that the Cohort officer responsible for flipping the planet is not going to be the same Cohort officer responsible for dealing with the aftermath. Yes, as God-Emperor, John is ultimately responsible for everything, but nobody runs a space empire single-handedly. Decisions get delegated.)

This would parallel John's justification for putting up the Cow Wall. Gotta put up the Cow Wall or the authorities will just raid the facility. Gotta have a nuclear bomb on hand not because John intends to use it but because they need leverage. Their enemies are powerful and dangerous and want to hurt them. They have to protect themselves. It's self-defense. They don't have another choice. The United States has to invade Iraq or there will be another 9/11!!

Basically, if a population feels like the victim, any atrocity becomes justifiable.

From Quds News, we can see the car is clearly marked as World Central Kitchen (WCK) even from above. Check this post for the WCK statement on the attack but also have a look at how the spins & lies have already begun:

You don't need to be an expert to know a roadside bomb would have hit that car differently. Like do they think our eyes and brains don't work?

WCK had 3 cars in their convoy and have reported 7 workers total killed. Now they have suspended operations for aid delivery. Aid from every direction is being blocked and affected in the strip, israel is starving the people of Gaza and killing anyone who tries to get food or give them food. It's insane and that word doesn't feel like enough but I don't know what else to say at this point.

Military-Industrial Complex Primer

Given everything that's happening, I wanted to do a primer on the U.S.'s military-industrial complex. A lot of you reading this probably already know a lot of this, but for anyone who doesn't, I hope it helps.

Start with corporations getting pro-war candidates into office. Now, corporations cannot donate to candidates directly, but there are PACs and whatnot.

The pro-war candidates will ensure that military funding gets passed, paid for by U.S. taxpayer dollars. This will allow the military to buy stuff from corporations. This is fighters and bombs, but it's also radios and so forth. The factor that determines if a product has military applications is if the military uses it for military products. (Tangent: this leads to, "OF COURSE our product has military applications please give us funding." but the product is, like, an underwater can opener.)

Next, there needs to be a war. This can either be a war the U.S. fights, like the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, or it can be military aid to countries like Ukraine and Israel.

Now, it's important to recognize that the goal (for the military-industrial complex) is not victory. Victory means peace, and peace is bad for profits. The goal is perpetual conflict.

This is why the U.S. bombed the shit out of Afghanistan for two decades and then handed control back to the Taliban.

There are other factors that play into this. It'll benefit the U.S. on the global stage if Russia spends a couple of decades trying to annex Ukraine, just as it benefited Russia to have the U.S. expend resources failing to conquer Iraq and Afghanistan and so forth, just as it benefited the U.S. for the Soviet Union wasted a lot of resources failing to conquer Afghanistan. The ruling party of Israel benefits from Hamas existing because their claim to political power is 'We will protect you from Hamas.' So, yeah, there are other factors, but that's the basics of the military-industrial complex. And that's why the world is filled with leaders who'll do anything except the thing that would lead to an end to war.
