SR-71 pilot recalls when he set 13 acres of Maryland on fire by dumping fuel after one engine exploded during his last Blackbird flight
The SR-71 Blackbird
In the 1960’s, the US Air Force (USAF) developed the SR-71 Blackbird, a plane that could travel more than 3 times as fast as the sound produced by its own engines.
Throughout its nearly 24-year career, the SR-71 spy plane remained the world’s fastest and highest-flying operational aircraft. Flying at Mach 3+ from 80,000 feet, it could survey 100,000 square miles of Earth’s surface per hour. And in the off chance an enemy tried to shoot it down with a missile, all the Blackbird had to do was speed up and outrun it.

Linda has a personal relationship with the SR-71 because her father Butch Sheffield flew the Blackbird from test flight in 1965 until 1973. Butch’s Granddaughter’s Lisa Burroughs and Susan Miller are graphic designers. They designed most of the merchandise that is for sale on Threadless. A percentage of the profits go to Flight Test Museum at Edwards Air Force Base. This nonprofit charity is personal to the Sheffield family because they are raising money to house SR-71, #955. This was the first Blackbird that Butch Sheffield flew on Oct. 4, 1965.
Its engineering was so cutting edge that even the tools to build the SR-71 needed to be designed from scratch.
What it’s like to fly the world’s fastest plane
Spencer Hall interviewed for SBNation former SR-71 Blackbird pilot Rick McCrary about what it’s like to fly the world’s fastest plane.
McCrary explained;
‘You waddle out there in your spacesuit, carrying your little cooler because it gets quite hot in that spacesuit. You go out to a van with some La-Z-Boys in it, these big recliners, and they drive you out to the airplane. It’s sitting there with all the cables hooked up to it, just like a space launch. It’s outgassing stuff, people are checking it, and then people start unhooking it and leaving and then it’s just you and the crew chief. You get into the seat, close the hatch, and you’re in your cocoon.
‘Startup was also a unique thing. It had this special fuel, because the temperatures during flight got up to over 600 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re at speed. The worry is that normal fuel, which you want to explode quickly during flight and have a low flashpoint, well…you wanted the exact opposite with the Blackbird. You’re carrying so much fuel that the last thing you want to worry about is it self-igniting.

A Boeing KC-135Q Stratotanker refueling an SR-71
‘You’d burn 80,000 pounds of fuel in about an hour and twenty minutes. That’s a lot of gas. You’re on the boom a lot, and that was why in-flight refueling experience was such a critical part of the screening process. You didn’t have a lot of time to do it, and you had to get it right the first time. Three refuelings was common, but on longer missions you’d refuel six or eight times. Those were long days.
Last flight on the SR-71 Blackbird
‘You’d light up the afterburner right after that first refueling, and take it to full power for the next hour. That’s pretty amazing, because no other plane can fly in full afterburner continuously. All other planes have either a three minute limit, or five minute limit on that, but you’d be going at full afterburner for an hour, hour and a half.’
When Hall asked McCrary if he remembered when his last SR-71 Blackbird flight took place, he answered;
‘The answer is kind of an interesting yes and no. There came the time to move on, and we had a good deal. We got to take it to the National Air Show in Washington, DC and put it on display there. That was going to be our last flight.

Setting 13 acres of Maryland on fire during last flight on the SR-71 Blackbird
‘As we took off from there and came back around for a pass, the right engine exploded. We had to dump gas, and set about thirteen acres of Maryland on fire as we did that. That was kind of interesting, just spewing flaming fuel and titanium pieces around.’
McCrary explained that this wasn’t rural Maryland;
‘Actually, we were pointed at the White House out of Andrews Air Force Base. It was funny listening back to the voice tape because I start by saying “Well, we’ll go out over the bay here and dump this fuel.” About thirty seconds later I say “Screw it” and just dump it. We defoliated southern Maryland, but we got it back on the ground, which was great. After all that happened, I absolutely remember shutting it down. My legs started shaking uncontrollably with the adrenaline from it all when I knew it was over with. My co-pilot never flew again, either.’

Families in Alameda County, California, are calling on Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price to step down from her position over accusations of her being "soft on crime," according to CBS News Bay Area.
The recall campaign, called Save Alameda for Everyone (SAFE), "held a town hall Monday evening at the Emeryville Senior Center," the outlet reported.
One mother, Florence McCrary, became an advocate for justice reform in Alameda after her son was shot and killed by a stray bullet at only 22 years old.
CALIFORNIA AG DECLINES CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR OFFICER IN FATAL 2020 SHOOTING OF SAN FRANCISCO MAN
"We would expect more empathy and concern for mothers who have had to put their children in the ground at 22 years of age, an innocent victim," the mother said. "I'm a tax-paying citizen who works hard and why should I have to live with the fact that this person won't be held accountable for his choices."
The suspected murderer, Otis Wyatt, "was charged with both murders under the previous district attorney Nancy O'Malley in Alameda County," CBS News Bay Area reported. "But just last week, Price's office made a deal with the shooter for voluntary manslaughter for killing Fletcher-Cooks. The murder charge against McCrary's son was dropped altogether."
Price has rejected accusations that she is "soft on crime," the outlet explained.
ARMED STORE CLERK WHO SCARED OFF SLEDGEHAMMER-WIELDING SUSPECTS SAYS HE'S HAD 'ENOUGH' OF ESCALATING CRIME
The recall campaign against Price has widespread support online, with SAFE telling CBS News Bay Area that it has already collected 80,000 signatures in the last five weeks and is "targeting a special election in April."
"It plans to turn them in ahead of the March deadline and is targeting a special election in April," the outlet reported.
McCrary, who signed the recall petition, said Alamedans need a different person in charge. "I did not vote for her so I can honestly say I was not a proponent and supporter of hers from the beginning," the mother said about Price.
"The recall I think needs to occur so that we can have a different choice," she added.

For the end-of-year book ask game!
I'd like to hear your #'s 2 (rereading), 3 (top 5), and 13 (least favorites)
2. Did you reread anything? What?
I reread Sense and Sensibility and The Correction of Folly this year.
I love S&S as anyone who follows me knows I have a long list of AUs for the future.
The Correction of Folly is an What if Sense and Sensibility books since it's public domain.
3. What were your top five books of the year?
5. Atomic Habits by James Clear-It's nonfiction and about the psychology of habits and how to change them and it's dense to read.
4. Know Yourself Know Your Money by Rachel Cruze- A financial book about money and that depending on how your parents talked about money influences you how to think about money. It's good because I'm trying to change my money habits and money was one of the 4 topics not discussed growing up.
3. The Little Black Book of BIG RED FLAGS by Natasha Burron, Julie Fishman, and Meagan McCrary-I'm very bad at seeing red flags in people because I would rather see the good in people then the bad but im realistic enough that I know there there but growing up I was gaslighted so much i don't have a good perception when it comes to people around me. People in my irl vs my Fandom life
2. Correction of Folly by Christine Combe-Its silly, but it just makes me feel good whenever I read it.
1. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen-I love this book, it's my favorite Jane book. Because the plot isn't about romance, it's about understanding family. I too have trouble understanding my siblings but we do love each other so I find it more relatable then P&P.
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
Most of my other books are for research purposes into Jane Austen and the Georgian History and plants discovered around this time. Other is financial help and how to relearn how to put up boundaries (childhood was not good for this)
I think How Zoologist Organize Things: The Art of Classification by David Bainbridge is dull and too dense for me, who has only a superficial care about organization and classification.
I think Love Your Life Not Theirs by Rachel Cruze is practical, but I am not looking forward to getting through the book. The advice is good, but tbh I know what she sounds like, and I read in voices, and it's rather annoying.
I got two pages into Boundaries by Dr Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend and had to put it down because while I struggle with boundaries I hate first person even in nonfiction. Its a style I dislike in either fiction or nonfiction but I will prevail.
Thank you for the asks!
