This song, from 1975, was written by Jimmy Buffet, born in 1946. My whole life as much as I’ve remembered it, this song has had a deep reverence, a mournful seriousness to it. It got to be on the regular rotation in the car’s road-trip songs, despite it having that swear in it, and the references to drugs (that I did not understand, of course). We would sing along with the Jimmy Buffett tapes in the car, but when this song came on, we wouldn’t sing along, we’d just listen. There was something about it. There was something heavy to the words, something I didn’t quite understand.

When I hit my teenage years and started trying to make sense of everything, listening to the lyrics and reading the liner notes and trying to put every song into this like, structured and meaningful coherent whole where all the fictions that stories told were in fact part of some greater truth, I thought it was about Jimmy Buffett himself turning forty, and that crystallised something – it made sense. This was the anthem my father saw, sharing with Jimmy Buffett, when they were both facing turning 40, and that was when the song was made.

Jimmy Buffet was not forty when he wrote the song. He wasn’t even 30. He wasn’t forty until 1986, a year in which I was three. My father was 38, and two years later, he was 40. My dad has been on the far side of 40 most of my life. I never really saw someone facing turning 40 until members of my peer group did it. And, thing is… they’ve mostly been fine about it. Nobody I know has been making a point of their anxieties at getting older. There hasn’t been this anguished cry of ‘oh no I’m old,’ in fact most of my peer and friend group has been looking at their life getting through their 30s and shouting defiantly at the world thank god that’s done with.

Nobody I know makes being 40 bad. Most of them make it something great. I love you all, especially those of you repeating to our youngers: Don’t feel you wasted your 20s. You’re allowed to take your time working yourself out.

Maybe growing up with role models who were pirates was part of the place the rot started. My family after all were good upstanding Christians but I somehow grew up seeing laws as things to be gently circumvented where necessary and eventually entirely meaningless when they were never fairly deployed. I know that this song, The Last Saskatchewan Pirate, got me into a weird head space in my teen years of wanting to know about Canada and Canadian culture, a door that, once opened, I think, is where I met a lot of my best friends.

I remember this song being so… appealing to me, because of its oddness and silliness while still being a banger to sing. It wasn’t even an actual Captain Tractor song, though they wound up helping form that period of my teens into twenties, a sort of interesting bet-you’ve-never-heard-of-them musical icebreaker. Like a weaponised ship part. I have memories, in the time just after graduating from school, standing in the front yard of my parents’ house, spooling up a hose while singing this song to myself, and by myself, I mean the whole street.

I really wasn’t good at being a person.

But thing is, I got this song from mp3 dot com, which was like Kazaa and Limewire and Napster, but it didn’t go down. It was just bands asking you to take their songs. How cool was that? I couldn’t see how it would make money. The fact I wound up buying both of their albums at some point later, well, that may have played into it.

I started a ritual of listening to this song after I heard it, first in the There She Is!! series of videos. I downloaded it from a bootleg site because I couldn’t even find the name of the band that made it, what with it being in all squidgy letters I didn’t know. Now it’s on Youtube. Now it’s easy to find.

I have files on my computer that are snippets of anime episodes from 30 years ago, that have managed to successfully cling to my digital presence this entire time, since I very first got onto the internet. I can namedrop people like Mike Rhea and Megazone and Richard Pelley and Anand Chelian and Blade and Epsilon and gilmae and µ and Guardian and there’s a time anchored to those things, things that the right people might head-snap around and go oh holy shit, I remember that… but not many people do.

Deep, old magics from a time when the internet was smaller, and where so much of what I was doing, I was doing for free, shared by people for the sake of sharing it, for the novelty of it. I learned to do Photoshop work on a pirated copy of Photoshop, and moved to GIMP when my partner wanted to, because she hated Photoshop (and I didn’t have a copy any more). I’ve been using GIMP for something like twenty years. It was free. A free version of something I’d have had to pirate that’s about as good, as the thing you have to pay for gets worse.

You can’t beat the pirates. Free is a hell of a price point. For a little more than free, I’d expect to get good, as well. You can’t even make a moral case any more. I’m technically pirating a copy of Word, because the version I paid for doesn’t do what I want, and I can’t buy the version I want to use any more because it’s too old. When I can’t even buy the thing you tell me you sell, because of where I live or your controls or price point incentives, all those things tell me the only correct course of action is to steal. And to steal from the people who have so much, and where the stealing cannot hurt people who matter.

As this post goes up, I have just turned forty.

I feel sad.

I do not feel old. That is part of it. I feel like at forty my dad had been a priest and a traveller and in the military and a chef and had lived a childhood of hijinks with his twin brother and his famous dad. I feel like I have spent the past two weeks learning how to finally, properly, do the dishes, and that I am still responding to a world around me that is here to punish me for not being good enough.

I feel a little bit hollow and a little bit wasted.

But I can at least delight in knowing that gleeful, joyous, shameless piracy is not a thing behind me.

Youtube keeps showing ads to my child who is watching baby shark and similar videos.

This is a question I have asked since the day I handed my daughter the tablet and all the Youtube channels that were specifically designed for babies. According to certain sources, they help children develop, increase their cognitive abilities, and perform other tasks. They also encourage social and mental progress. My child is clearly enjoying the content. She's always watching it with sparkling eyes and smiling, ready to explode off her lips. But I don't comprehend all the commercials. My child is not buying anything therefore why are you pushing ads, sometimes not even baby-like on my baby's YouTube channel? The first thing to note is that infants are unable to understand commercials. That's simply both a cost-effective and also a waste of resources, including time spent creating and playing this commercial ad (video) to a baby.. They aren't understanding! If this is true, then why do you insist on playing the ads for their infants? Do you think that when mother and father or other baby care providers are watching, they'll benefit from the ads? Recently, I realized that my cat enjoys watching these captivating videos for cats. It's usually birds or mice but my cat is a sucker watching the videos for hours. Perhaps hunting. They keep interrupting the videos with ads trying to convince you to buy something. My cat doesn't watch these videos. The ads aren't important to her. Maybe they're hoping that my cat will be watching the videos? Although they may be partly correct, I find that I watch those videos with my cat more often than I do anything else useful. online youtube download I have found a wonderful solution I've used recently. It's basically downloading Youtube videos on my computer onto my tablet or my daughter's tablet to play later. It works like I were offline and needed to store the video stored on my hard drive, instead of streaming it via Youtube. What do I mean? I found this site that allows me keep video on my computer, rather than having to access it via Youtube every time my cat wants to watch birds. Now I double-click this mp4 file from my desktop. VLC plays it instantly and there are no ads. The same procedure applies to all baby video and channels. I just search for all the videos my daughter wants to watch, download the videos from Youtube to my desktop and then copy them to her tablet. Even if it's be just a couple of songs, I will do it on her tablet. It's much more user-friendly to use this site with my computer on my desktop and then move the files into the location you want. Maybe that's me, being a neo-classical. This is a great way to save mobile data. Before downloading videos from Youtube, I had no idea how to save my mobile data.

Sleep is considered an indulgence for him, and even then he doesn’t tend to indulge any more than two hours at most. He is built to run for at least a week with minimal recharging, but it was his own brother who taught him that sometimes it’s pleasant to just lie down and tune out the rest of the world for a little while.

Without a mission furrowing his brow, David looks younger in his sleep, hair tousled instead of slicked back and expression lax instead of hardened with intense concentration. When the human’s vitals reflect a deep REM cycle, the android quietly eases out of bed and retraces his steps to the front door, collecting their hastily discarded clothes along the way. He folds them neatly, placing them on the end of the bed ready for the morning. 

The apartment is large and airy, decorated in sleek, dark, masculine decor. It is aesthetically pleasing but shows little life, unlike the way Lieutenant Anderson’s home seems lived in, worn in a way this isn’t. It tells him Captain Allen is rarely home long enough to make the space feel occupied. 

The fridge and pantry are well stocked, and there are cooking utensils in the dish rack. Meals are stacked in containers labelled neatly with days of the week, ordered left to right in the fridge. A self-sufficient man, reliant on no one but himself. 

Caleb takes his time exploring the apartment, careful to keep noise at a minimum in order not to disturb the human slumbering in the bedroom. He lies down on the couch and connects to the obsolete MP3 player sitting in the dock, downloading the songs so he can listen to them. It passes the time in an enjoyable way, allowing more insight into the man’s tastes. At four in the morning, Connor requests to communicate with him, and he opens a channel for his brother.

[What are you doing now?]

‘I am making my way through Captain Allen’s music collection.’

‘No but he has an obsolete MP3 player filled with songs from the mid 2000s to the late 2010s.’

[Will you stay over at his apartment often? Do you think it will lead to cohabitation?]

‘Perhaps.’ Caleb mulls on the thought, letting it turn in his mind and worm its way deep. ‘I am not sure. This is the first time we have been intimate. I am not sure what he wants to do next.’

[Curious.] Connor hums thoughtfully. [I have no such inclinations towards romantic or sexual relations.]

‘You take after our father that way.’ Caleb points out, and he thinks he can feel Connor’s smile even without seeing it. 

He slides back beneath the covers after disconnecting from his brother’s conversation. David shifts a little at the movement, and Caleb eases him into his arms. Androids are not warm like this, soft like this. Human bodies have a certain give to them, since they are muscle and fat and sinew and skin layered over a skeleton frame. 

He breathes him in, nose in his hair, able to analyze the chemical components of the shampoo he used in the shower earlier, and the natural oils of his scalp. His heartbeat is steady, his breathing relaxed and Caleb uses those sounds, the steady tempo, to lull him to sleep as he slowly shuts off his processes one by one, easing into stasis.

At 5:53, a full seven minutes before the first alarm, he feels David begin to stir awake. It’s a quickening of his heartbeat, a deeper inhale and exhale, a slight twitch in his fingertips and toes as his body prepares for more movement. He’s not quite conscious yet but he wriggles a little, as if chasing more warmth, more contact. 

Caleb presses his lips to his bare shoulder, tongue darting out to taste his skin. David huffs, squirming away from his mouth and yet tightening his arms around him. There’s arousal present in his sweat, and Caleb can feel his already half hard cock thickening between them. He kisses the juncture where his jaw meets his ear, closing his lips over the jutt of his bone and sucking mildly. David groans hands clumsily pushing at his shoulders.

“Deal.” He sighs, acting put upon though the smile betrays his tone completely. One more kiss before they finally get out of bed. Suddenly David’s phone vibrates insistently on the bedside table just as Caleb receives an inbound call.

“Allen.” He answers curtly as Caleb presses two fingers to his LED.

“RK900, receiving.”

A mission. They scramble for their clothes, forgoing the shower in favour of wiping themselves down with a damp hand towel. The mellow mood vanishes in an instant, replaced with something grim. Caleb watches David withdraw into himself, step behind the veneer of the man who leads SWAT Unit 32. There he is: Captain Allen, ready to command.

“Alright rookie, let’s go.”

“Yessir.” He follows him obediently to the door and the man pauses, reaching to tweak the collar of Caleb’s jacket and for a moment he glimpses him again; David offers a brief, affectionate little smile and Caleb leans down swiftly to kiss it before it vanishes.

“Get up.” A distant, but familiar voice called to him. “Please, you have to wake up before he comes back.”  His eyes began to crack open, and pain shot through his entire body as he tried to move his arm.

“Lancer?” Rouxls asked as his eyes slowly opened, the child looming above his body.

“Rouxls! You’re alive!” Lancer cried out as he gave the man a hug, though that didn’t much help the pain.

“What, hast happened?” He asked, feeling quite a sizeable bump on the back of his own head.

“Father threw you off the roof.” Lancer’s voice shook as he spoke the words that brought almost all memory back.

“Prince! Art thou wounded? He was not too rough with you, was he?” Lancer pushed his worried hand away.

“I’m fine! You’re the one with a broken leg.”

Broken? Rouxls hadn’t even noticed until Lancer said something. He looked down at the crude way his leg was bent and felt ill, having to turn his eyes away.

“We need to find a way to get you out of prison!”

And there was another thing Rouxls hadn’t noticed. He was too concerned with Lancer to realize he was laying on stone in the musky air of the basement with one hand chained to the wall behind him. Lancer was about to say something else when they both heard what was clearly his father’s heavy footsteps on the stairs. Rouxls began to panic as he felt a pit drop in his stomach.

“Lancer, thou must hide! He mustn’t know you art with me!” He spoke in a hushed, panicked tone as Lancer scrambled to find a place to hide, ultimately settling on hiding behind a pillar in a darker corner of the room. Meanwhile, Rouxls pretended to be unconscious still, stirring only slightly as he heard the metal door slide open against the concrete.

“Kaard.” He heard the king’s voice as he began to open his eyes. “Get up.” He was winded with a painful blow to his stomach, which sat him mostly up, at least as much as he could with his leg.

“What, I, where? Sire?” He looked up at the king, fear and panic playing quite believably on his face. “Why am I, here? What happened?”

Rouxls had hardly finished his sentence when the king slapped him sharply across the face, eliciting a pained response from the duke. “You know exactly why you’re here, Kaard. Do you know what happens to those who dare commit treason against me?”

Rouxls did know what happened, and the very thought brought tears to his eyes.

“And I’m going to let Lancer watch, teach him something about being a man, show him what happens to those who would ever dare attack a Spade.” Another attack hit Rouxls square in the chest, blowing him back onto the slab of concrete used as a bed. He was seeing stars as the door shut and locked again. Lancer emerged from the darkness and gently shook Rouxls.

“Rouxls? Don’t go to sleep again, please.”

“I, I am awake, mine prince.” He was hardly awake, but he was awake.

“What did he mean? What’s gonna happen to you? Rouxls? You’re crying.” Lancer was talking frantically, trying to get an answer out of the man, but he remained quiet. How could he tell him? How was he supposed to tell this child that treason is punishable by death? He would never understand, he hardly understood how to download “songs” on his MP3.

“Lancer.” He tried to sound calm as he sat up again, breathing still hoarse from being knocked around, setting his free hand on Lancer’s cheek. “You needeth to be strong, okay? And not in the way thine father wishes. You must be strong here.” He tapped Lancer’s chest as the boy reach up to hold his hand. “Something, is going to happen to me. Something very bad.” He squeezed Lancer’s hand tightly. “And, you will be alone, with thy father.”

Lancer frowned hearing this. “You’re leaving? But, but why? You, you promised you would never leave! That’s not fair!”

Rouxls’s heart was breaking as tears rolled down his cheeks. “I wish it could be another way, mine prince, but I don’t think we can change your father’s mind. I don’t want to leave you, trust me when I say this.” Lancer hugged Rouxls, and he felt his shirt become a little wet. He rubbed the back of the boy’s head beneath his hood. Lowering his head, he placed a gently kiss on Lancer’s head as he tried to hold the child closer.

Lancer wiped his eyes and looked up. “What if we got you out? If we broke you out of prison? You, you could go stay in that castle behind the gate! Father would never find you there!”

Rouxls turned his eyes away. He couldn’t escape in his condition. A broken leg, probably several other bones broken or fractured, he hardly had the strength to sit up in bed, let alone try to run from Spade and his troops. “You must return upstairs, before you are caught with me, mine prince. Go now, please.” This only upset Lancer more and he stomped his feet as he ran away. Rouxls turned over on the slab of concrete, turned into a fetal position as he cried. He was about to be killed, and Spade was going to make Lancer watch.

When Rouxls awoke again his body was being moved, the pain was the first thing to wake him, though he did seem to be being moved with care. He opened his eyes to see one of the Rudinn guards bandaging his broken leg in a thick layer of wraps to emulate a cast. “Oh, you’re awake.” The guard looked away from Rouxls. “What, did you do?”

“I was only protecting Lancer. I never meant any harm to his majesty. I acted upone mine own impulse.”

The Rudinn was quiet as it applied another layer of bandages. Rouxls sat silently as well, not having anymore to say on the matter. “Well, he plans on keeping you here for a week, we don’t know why. He must need to make, a decision.”

“His highness has already made up his mind, and I know I am to be executed. No need to sugar coat, little diamond.” The Rudinn simply nodded and slunked back to the door.

“Thanks for not trying to escape while your door was unlocked.”

Rouxls didn’t answer, and sat in the darkness as the door was shut and locked. That was how Lancer got back out, he must have gotten a key somewhere. That boy sure was a handful. A darling, caring, precious little handful.

Rouxls sat in the dark for quite a while, humming lullabies he would never have the chance to sing to Lancer again. Thinking about stories he never got to tell. Thinking about everything he was going to miss because of one action. But at least Lancer was safe, at least he was alive.

Would he ever take the training wheels off his bike? Maybe someday he would get the horn he really wanted, or the streamers he wants on the handlebars. Maybe he would find a way to get the lights that go on the tires, he had always talked about it. Perhaps one day he’ll be able to ride a real motorcycle. Though, he would have no one to teach him how. Rouxls had taught him how to ride his bike, and they were still working up to removing the third wheel. He was so close, he knew it. He just wished he would be able to see it, to see Lancer grow up, to see Lancer become a better man than his father could ever be. He hoped deep in his soul that he would be. That the precious child wouldn’t be tainted by his father’s blackened heart. They may be darkners, but a darkner could still have a good soul. Hearing his own humming bounce of the walls in his cell was beginning to make him tired, but he didn’t want to sleep anymore. Somehow, sleeping felt tiresome. But, even as he tried to fight off he was drifting slowly off, his voice melting into the darkness and the silence that surrounded him.

The duke sat up as he heard Lancer’s voice calling him, flinching as he heard the slow screech of the barred metal door rubbing against the concrete, opening just enough to let Lancer get inside.

“Lancer? What art thou-”

“I’m not giving up on you! Look, I told one of the Rudinn’s to try and fix your leg! Looks like they did a good job.”

“Lancer, you, you told them to do this?” He was worried Spade might get angry at Lancer if he found out.

“Hold still!” The child said as he began climbing onto the concrete slab where Rouxls was sat.

“Wait, childe! Be not so hasty. What art thou doing? Did we not speak of this? You mustn’t put yourself in danger for me.”

“I said I’m not giving up. We’re getting you out!”

“But, Lancer I-”

“No!” Lancer protested, maybe a little too loud. “I, I need you. I need you to stay, like you promised. Even if you don’t live in the castle anymore. Cause, cause no one else really likes me. And, you make sure I eat, and you get me to bed, and you sing, and you tell me stories and you tuck me in, and you don’t yell at me, you like me, and you think I’m strong, and I get to make puzzles with you, and you can teach me how to ride my bike with just two wheels, and you, you do all the things dads are supposed to do.” Lancer was sitting on the concrete with Rouxls, who could practically feel his heart breaking in his chest. “I, I don’t know what I would do without you. I think I would, I dunno. I don’t like not knowing.” The boy was shaking, looking up at Rouxls with his hood pulled down. “I need you.”

Rouxls wrapped his free arm tightly around Lancer, holding him close in hopes the boy wouldn’t notice he was crying. “Lancer, my dearest, I only wanted to protecte you.” Lancer was hugging him back with both hands, holding his coat tightly. “I feared so much that you would be hurt due to my actions I never thought about, about what thou would have to endure.”

Lancer wiped his eyes and looked at Rouxls, wiping the tears from his face too. “So you’ll let me help you escape?”

But his leg felt like it would fall off if he continued on it. He pulled himself into a nearby tree, elevating his broken leg to give it rest.

He didn’t know how long he was in the tree, he had lost track of time, he supposed. The next minute it was as dark as could be, and the next he could see light beginning to spill over the land. Well, he supposed if he stayed on the paths then he would be okay. He supposed this for a minute, as voices began approaching him.

“The king is furious, and no one seems to know where Lancer is either.”

“You think they ran off together or something?”

“Well, they don’t have many places to run to.”

Rouxls didn’t know when he fell asleep, all he knew was that he was woken up to the sound of bells chiming. It was noon. Guards opened his cell and brought him to his feet, tying his hands behind his back as the chimes rang ominously through the halls, telling what was to come. Rouxls was silent as he was walked into the courtyard. His eyes falling first on Lancer being held by the cruel man that was the king, and falling second on the guillotine.

My Biography with BTS: V edition

The third installation after J-HOPE and SUGA is the beloved V with his unique personality. We had V speak about his everything from his childhood memories to his future aspirations.

Grandma’s little boy from childhood, bright and full of curiosity.

I was born in Daegu like SUGA-hyung, spending a few years living in a place called Gochang too. I’ve been a very bright child ever since kindergarten, and all the teachers loved me! Whenever I found something pretty, I’d bring it to them and they’d praise me like “Wow! Well done!” which made me happy. I also have a fond memory of sharing these green candies that were popular at the time with my friend in the same giraffe class as me.

I have lots of memories with my grandma in my childhood. My grandmother would send me to and from kindergarten, so at the end of every day I would wait eagerly for her to come. She would always buy yuzu tea for me at a vending machine, and we really had a lot of fun…

When I was a primary school student, I was overflowing with curiosity and wanted to try everything. I wanted to sleepover at my friend’s house, I wanted to go to the training camp for taekwondo, which I was learning. There were many students that came from my kindergarten, so I had many friends. I’d play at the park with my friends every day until the sun set.

But I wasn’t only playing! I attended coaching school too. (laughs) I went from 6th grade to the 3rd year of middle school. Because I lived in the countryside, I could only imagine a future working in agriculture, so I believed I had to study properly. However, that all changed when I got into music. I don’t remember when it started, but I begged for an MP3 so I could download all kinds of music and listen to it. Then, around the end of 6th grade, I started to dream of becoming a singer. That was the first time I had a clear dream for myself.

I started to act towards my dream in the 1st year of middle school. My father asked me “What do you want to be in the future” and I answered “A singer.” My father used to dream of becoming an actor, so when he heard that he said to me very seriously, “If you want to become a singer, you have to learn an instrument.” And so I learned the saxophone for around three years. It looked cool, but it hurt my lips and was heavy to hold. But still, I believed I had to learn an instrument to become a singer so I kept at it. Because I practiced my hardest, I even won a gold medal at a South Gyeongsang Province competition!

In middle school, I was part of a club called the broadcast dance club, where people who liked dancing gathered to dance to K-POP songs. With saxophone, dance, and coaching school, I was pretty busy.

In my free time, I looked forward to playing basketball with my friends. I wasn’t any good, but my friend was a huge basketball fan, so I was influenced by them into playing all the time.

The reason why I quit saxophone was because I wanted to put more of my effort into dancing. Wouldn’t it be lame if I became a singer that couldn’t dance? I wanted to learn properly, so once I became a high school student I joined a dance class. Then, half a year later, there was a private BigHit audition. My friend was going to audition, and I had some free time so I tagged along. For the audition, I had to dance, rap, then show off an imitation and one-line gag. I was sure I failed. Then the notice that I passed came. I thought it was a lie. I was the only one who passed in Daegu.

A trainee era filled with memories with the members.

I came to Seoul in September of my 1st year of high school and started living in the dorm while attending an arts high school there. I joined after JUNGKOOK, SUGA-hyung, J-HOPE-hyung, and RM-hyung. I don’t get shy at all, so I was able to become friends with everyone quickly. I was happy simply becoming a trainee and had fun every day. That being said, I practiced lots and didn’t have a life of a normal high school student, but we managed to make our own memories of the dorm and practice room. What I remember even now is how the seven of us went to the amusement park on the 1st of January. We all tried to dress up fashionably for the occasion, which ended up with everyone wearing black. We really stood out. (laughs)

By the way, my fashion was always coordinated with the clothes my grandma bought me. My grandma had always had great sense in picking clothes.

Even after our debut was decided, my existence was hidden until the last minute as a secret weapon. Because of that, I couldn’t tell anyone I was going to debut, which left some painful memories too. All the other members had schedules, but I was left alone at the dorm… That’s why when it was finally announced, I thought “My dream from 6th grade has come true!” and was really happy.

BTS is the first and last team of my life. I want to climb upwards with the members until the end. Once we climb to the top, I want to look back and think “This is how hard we’ve worked until now.” If given the chance, I think I’d want to try acting too, but doing anything half-heartedly is bad, so I’ll have to studying acting properly until I’m satisfied with myself.

Valentine’s Day Music Newlsetter 2019!

Welcome to the 13th Music Newsletter! Short intro for the newbies - I love music. I love sharing music with other people. In college I started a "music newsletter" email with some playlists (aka mixtapes) I've made and some song/band recommendations. Why Valentine's Day? Because I think this day should be about love in many ways - including love for music!

That brings us to today. The first Valentine's Day mixtape I put together was actually a physical mix CD that I mailed to my home friends while I was away at college. That was in 2008 (11 years ago!). A lot has changed since then, but my love of music has not. While I feel sometimes too busy or too old or too out of touch to know what I'm even talking about, I hope you'll get some enjoyment out of this - as much as I've been enjoying listening to these songs and picking them for you!

1.) "Happy Unhappy" - The Beths New Zealand indie rockers The Beths debut album, Future Me Hates Me, is full of catchy, energetic sad-twinged songs. This song feels like it could have come out back in the 00s when we had to find new music by reading blogs and actually downloading MP3s - it feels closer to the Garden State soundtrack era of indie than the recent moody electronic vibe. It's a lot of fun! Sounds like Courtney Barnett by way of The Wombats, with a splash of Los Campesinos.

2.) “City Looks Pretty” - Courtney Barnett Courtney’s 2018 album “Tell Me How You Really Feel” is only her second studio album, but somehow it feels like she’s been around forever. The album features a “fuller” sound and more production, which may appear dulled next to 2015’s “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.” However, I feel excited by Courtney exploring a more mature sound and think it accurately reflects the albums depressive theme. “Sometimes I get mad / it’s not all that bad” is sung with a definite apathy compared to her shout-singing past record. As the bridge settles in, Courtney captures the depression symptom of lack of interest in things you used to enjoy. The city looks pretty when you’ve been stuck inside isolated for two weeks. 3.) “Screwed” - Janelle Monáe feat. Zoë Kravitz Janelle’s 2018 album “Dirty Computer” is an anthology of songs (and truly, poetry) that tell of reckoning with being a queer woman of color in an oppressive, violent society. It’s an incredibly personal album with her fans in mind - “I want young girls, young boys, nonbinary, gay, straight, queer people who are having a hard time dealing with their sexuality, dealing with feeling ostracized or bullied for just being their unique selves, to know that I see you. This album is for you. Be proud.” (Rolling Stone, 2018). My favorite part of this song is “See, everything is sex / except sex / which is power / you know power is just sex / now ask yourself who’s screwing you.”

4.) "BAGDAD - Cap.7: Liturgia" - Rosalía 25-year-old Rosalía Vila Tobella from Catalonia has an excellent 2018 album El Mal Querer. The album combines traditional flamenco with modern R&B. The album is a story of love and heartbreak over the course of 11 chapters/songs. This particular one might sound familiar due to the sampling of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River."

5.) "Gun" - St. Lucia St. Lucia's first release off of their 2018 album Hyperion caught my attention with its connection to a more traditional rock sound and the heavy-hitting, one-word title. The production and sound almost reminds me of Oasis or U2. Turns out that the album is indeed produced by someone who worked on records with PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, and U2. In interviews, Jean-Philip Grobler talks about how this song is generally about both gun control and power. "You said you wanted to feel a gun in your hands" in Verse 1 transforms to "You said you wanted to feel the blood in your hands" in Verse 2, highlighting the fact that guns are designed to kill. 

6.) “Apathy” - Frankie Cosmos With a catchy bass line, gorgeous lyrics, and endearing vocals, this song and entire album are not to be missed. As you may notice on this year’s playlist, this year I was super into what I would describe as punk-influenced, low-fi indie female vocalists. Pretentious enough for you? Haha. I just mean that there are a ton of young women blowing up in the indie music scene with a huge crossover in sound. As demonstrated in “Apathy,” many of these songs are short, lack a traditional pop music format, use low-fi production, and have a storytelling aspect of almost speak-singing. These elements are all found in traditional punk music, so it’s interesting and exciting to see these artists shaking things up and challenging the punk genre. Frankie Cosmos has a long history of creating music, under various projects using Bandcamp as a teenager. Her 2018 album “Vessel” is nothing short of delightful and another one of my favorites of the year. 7.) “Your Dog” - Soccer Mommy Soccer Mommy is Sophie Allison, singer-songwriter based out of Nashville. She opened for Paramore on their recent tour and she has launched into the indie music scene with a lot of attention in the past couple years. I love how her voice clearly carries so much anger as she sings about an emotionally abusive relationship. Her lyrics describe the agony of small, sweet gestures pushing her back to her ex, despite her wanting desperately to end it. Using the metaphor of being a loyal, sub-servient dog, she describes the way her SO treats her like she’s his property. Because the song lacks a traditional “pop” format (verse 1 / chorus / verse 2 / chorus / bridge / chorus), there is a sense of the story ending unresolved. Fortunately, she has an excellent album (one of my favorites) from 2018 called “Clean” where you can learn more of her story. 8.) “Pristine” by Snail Mail A stunning debut from 19-year-old Lindsey Jordan, “Lush” is a 2018 release not to miss. “Pristine” perfectly encapsulates teenage life and love - “it just feels like the same party every weekend. Doesn’t it?” There is such a sense of genuine hormonal angst that she is almost joyfully celebrating. Her album reads more like a diary - and how lucky she is to have these future memories and be able to approach them with such wisdom.

9.) "Uncomfortably Numb" - American Football feat. Hayley Williams Paying homage to Pink Floyd, legendary emo band American Football joins with Paramore's lead singer Hayley Williams for a devastating track about losing emotional sensation. "I blame my father in my youth / Now as a father, I blame the booze." I couldn't find too much information on the exact inspiration behind the track, but it's the second track released off their upcoming album out March 22nd. Hayley is usually front and center as a singer, and it's interested to hear her take more of a backing role, as well as explore a bit of a lower vocal range than she usually does.

10.) “Geyser” - Mitski Mitski absolutely killed it last year with “Be The Cowboy,” which was consistently rated not only in the top 5 best albums, not only top 3, but making MULTIPLE end of year lists as the number one album of 2018. It’s easy to see why, given the incredible breadth of music she wrote for her album. I see Mitski's influence reflected in the rise of fame in other punk-inspired female vocalists in the indie scene, building off her ability to capture the attention of a wide audience. Which is also very interesting because she incorporated elements of many other genres on this album (spot any disco on “Nobody”?) While it was difficult to pick one song for my playlist, “Geyser” stands out to me as not only an excellent album opener, but a fascinating look into Mitski’s own relationship with the art she creates. In an interview, she explains that this song is about her feeling like she has to create music because she would never be satisfied in life without it, but feeling sometimes stifled, stuck, and resentful when she puts music above basic needs such as her health and self-care. She needs her art to survive but it simultaneously kills her.

11.) “Me & My Dog” - boygenius It’s impossible to pick just one song of this album. Boygenius is the supergroup of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker - who each could also have one of their incredible solo songs on my playlist. Partially because they enjoyed each other’s creative energies and partially as a response to constantly being compared to each other as “women in indie,” the trio came together to create an EP of emo-influenced, folk-inspired gorgeous tracks about grief, loneliness, identity, and heartbreak. This particular song features Phoebe Bridgers in the verses and is a beautiful representation of the embarrassing and frustrating feeling of being in love with an ex. Please check out the individual work of these artists too!

12.) "bless ur heart" - serpentwithfeet Serpentwithfeet, aka Josiah Wise, has a gorgeous, intimate voice throughout his 2018 debut album, soil. This song starts off with a question of how his art will be received by the world. The rest of the song is a tender message of gratitude to his first love. It seems like Josiah questioned the choice to speak about his experiences with his ex in such a public fashion - with complexities of privacy, being open about sexuality, and possible painful memories on the table. Josiah's writing is very much like poetry, and his raw, unfiltered, un-autotuned vocals match the beauty of his words.

13.) "Bury A Friend" - Billie Eilish 17-year-old Billie Eilish is set to release her debut album, When We Sleep, Where Do We Go? next month. This song matches her goth aesthetic with a creepy story from the perspective of the monster under the bed. We learn that the monster is part of Billie herself, who is struggling with her own demons. 14.) "Loading Zones" - Kurt Vile A gorgeous guitar track, Kurt Vile paints a picture of his hometown Philadelphia and feeling on top of the world exploring his city's streets. He included a hilarious marketing strategy of sending fake parking tickets to fans in the mail to promote the song. Kurt Vile talks about the metaphor of "I park for free," which is how he sometimes lives his life - breaking the dumb rules because it's his life, his streets, his town. 15.) "Dylan Thomas" - Better Oblivion Community Center Is it possible to already be nostalgic for the late 2000's? Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers released this surprise collaboration last month and this is the standout track for me. Conor Oberst's incredibly recognizable voice is hard to match in terms of strength, timbre, and uniqueness. While Bridgers is young enough to be from a different generation than him (she also grew up listening to Oberst's music), he saw something in her that resonated with him. I love how they sing in unison on this track (and much of the album) and think their voices sound really good together.

16.) "Butterflies" - Kacey Musgraves Kacey Musgraves is bringing a breath of fresh air to country. After self-releasing three albums, she tried her hand at reality TV through Nashville Star over a decade ago. Golden Hour is her fourth album using a record label, and she just won Album of the Year at the Grammys! Her voice is beautiful and has an earnest, authentic approach in joining elements of country pop. 

17.) “Prior Things” - Hop Along “Bark Your Head Off, Dog” is Hop Along’s third album, released in 2018. Singer/songwriter Frances Quinlan has the ability to transform the themes of her songs. Layered with a multitude of different sounds and instruments, it could easily sound scattered and busy, but instead feels like we are huddled around a campfire with an enthusiastic, stream-of-consciousnesses storyteller. “Prior Thing” is the last song on the album and crosses time, space, and memories with the start of a hallucinogenic drug trip. She has the ability to take a phrase and transform the expected - pausing or elongating notes at unexpected places. This method keeps you invested in figuring out what the song is really about or what the conclusion is. 18.) "Kids" - Pup Emo/pop punkers Pup have a new album Morbid Stuff coming out on April 5th. Their songs are made for live shows - shouting/singing alternates, sing-a-long catchy lyrics reminiscent of the Hold Steady, and unison whole-band lines. Pup frontman Stefan Babcock said this song is about finding someone who agrees with your view of the world being a fucked up place, and enjoying small moments of solace in spending time with them.

We had a house in Park City, Utah growing up, and used to take road trips every summer.  In 1989, we went through Nevada, and down the coast of California.  Reno, Nevada was merely a rest-stop for us, and we ended up in San Francisco for a few nights.

My dad had been there in the summer of 1969, and told me that one of the things that stuck out the most in his memory was “The Human Jukebox.”  San Francisco is home to a slew of street performers and buskers, and he told me there was one guy who had a cardboard box, painted like a jukebox, and you could put in $2, and pick a song, and he’d stick one of many instruments out through the makeshift door, and play the song.

I didn’t make anything of it at the time, but low and behold, on the very first night, down by Fisherman’s Wharf, there was that same street vendor; The Human Jukebox, still busking for dollars, after two decades.

I suppose in 2018, the Human Jukebox seems pretty lame.  Today’s kids would ask, “Where do I plug in my USB?”  I suppose the jokes are endless, and I probably sound like an old man for even trying.

But in 1989, the fact that this guy was still there, on the same street corner, with the same gimmick, and probably with more-or-less the same booth, was absolutely mind-blowing to my father, who had been right there, twenty years earlier.

Not much had changed in twenty years, it seemed.  And that was the theme as we toured around, and my Dad pointed out some of the same restaurants he had been to in the late-60’s, or some of the places he got into trouble when he was a young 20-something.

The lack of change was astonishing.  So I was told.

And since then, San Francisco and the surrounding area has done nothing but change.

That’s what I’m being told now.

A client of mine works in tech, and he started going out to San Francisco about six years ago for business.  This was when we first met, and he bought his downtown Toronto condo.  Over the last six years, he’s told me at least two or three times how “Toronto could end up just like San Francisco,” if the city would get “behind” technology, as he explained.

Now I will admit, this is not my field, or my area of expertise.

But I listened to his theories, just as I listen to the Manhattanites joke about our “cheap” downtown real estate, or the London-Englanders talk about how Toronto is a “cute city” and is a version of London from the 1960’s.

While I can accurately claim that I was downloading MP3’s on Napster, which is now merely a name studied in text books about the technology boom in the late-1990’s, the only thing I know about emerging tech is what I hear from my clients.

And over the last few years, the conversation about Toronto being “the next tech hub” has started to get louder.

But first let me show you what happened to real estate prices in San Francisco, as the tech boom went full throttle.

It’s tough to say exactly when the tech-boom started, and when Silicon Valley became the place to be.  I might say it was 1995, when giants like Amazon got their start.  That’s also the first time I ever used the internet.

The median home price in San Francisco in 1995 was $225,000:

Yes, I know, I’d rather look at the average, but over a long enough time period, and with enough data, they’re somewhat comparable.

This is the only chart I could find that went back into the 1990’s, and actually into the 70’s which is kind of cool.

But that’s a bit far back for most of us.  Yeah, I missed out on being a 70’s baby by eight months…

Now if you want to see where prices are today, then here’s an April, 2018 update:

That’s $1,610,000.

And looking back at the $225,000 median from 1995, that would also represent a 706% increase in value in that time.

How does this compare to Toronto?

The average home price in Toronto in 1995 was $203,150.

The average home price for the entire year 2017, was $822,681.  But if we want to compare to San Francisco as per the chart above, which looked at the average in April, then we’d be looking at a slightly lower number of $804,584.

That’s a 296% increase in value.  Not bad!

But not the 706% increase that San Francisco had.

The market bears out there are probably shaking their heads already, thinking, “He’s going to shine a positive light on Toronto by comparing it to San Francisco?”  But as I said, I’m just looking at one particular theory out there, from a client who lives part-time in San Francisco, who’s been telling me to make this comparison for years.

And here’s the article he sent me in the summer that spawned this blog post:

“San Francisco Home Prices Grew The Fastest Ever In The First Half Of 2018 As The Tech Boom Shows No Signs Of Slowing”

From the article:

The average price of a house bought in San Francisco rose by $205,000 in the first half of 2018, the largest six-month increase in history, according to MLS data compiled by local real estate agency Paragon.

The average house in the city limits now costs $1.62 million. Condo prices also rose by $71,000, which is a significantly slower pace of change than in past years, but still comes in at a startling $1.21 million.

This is a direct outgrowth of the current tech boom in Silicon Valley, which shows no signs of slowing down.

It’s worth recalling that a lot of people in Silicon Valley were bracing for a slowdown in 2015. Venture investors like Bill Gurley were predicting that long-running start-ups would have to raise rounds at lower valuations because their last rounds came with restrictive conditions for future investors but they weren’t ready to go public yet. Start-ups cracked down on expenses. Apple’s share price actually dropped during the year, as investors grew concerned about slowing iPhone sales and the prospect of a general downturn. The next year, Silicon Valley stalwarts Intel and Cisco both laid off several thousand employees apiece.

Indeed, housing prices in SF actually slowed their growth in 2015 and 2016, before starting to rocket up again last year.

Toronto is not going to be the next Silicon Valley.

But I have to think that Toronto turned a major corner when Google (or Alphabet) announced that Sidewalk Labs would be coming to Toronto’s waterfront.

I remember back when Blackberry was the biggest name in Canada, and it seemed that Waterloo, Ontario would be Canada’s hub for innovation, technology, and all things intelligent in the future.  But it seems as though Toronto is slowly developing as the front-runner for Canada’s tech-hub, and it could end up being one of the largest hubs in the world.

On Saturday, the Huffington Post published an article that basically stole all my thunder:

“Toronto’s Tech Boom Will Keep Real Estate Frenzy Going: Forecast”

I have a lengthy queue of blog ideas; some are written as soon the idea is logged, and some languish on paper for weeks or months.  Well, the Huffington Post basically wrote the story for me!  Read it if you have time, it’s fantastic.

The article notes that between 2012 and 2017, Toronto added 82,000 jobs in the tech industry, which was more than any other city in all of North America, according to CB Richard Ellis.

CBRE provided this graphic as well to show how Toronto has moved up the ladder among tech giants:

As I’ve said, tech is not my field, and I don’t follow the industry much.  I’m not a gadget-head, I don’t care for the latest/newest/brightest consumer products, and half the jobs people are doing out there right now, I haven’t even heard of.

But I read the headlines.

And everywhere you look, it’s tech.

When it’s not tech, it’s sort-of tech.

Like this, which was in the news on Tuesday:

“Spaces Plans Its Largest Co-Working Sites In Toronto, Vancouver”

Spaces is a co-working environment that provides on-the-spot, or short-term desks, offices, conference rooms, and meeting spaces for entrepreneurs, small business owners, or anybody that needs the space, but can’t afford it, or can’t make use of it, full-time.  It’s like Uber for office buildings.

Some will argue that the presence of Spaces in Toronto’s downtown core will eliminate the need for large office buildings, but I disagree.  I think Spaces and other co-work environments like them will supplement office buildings, not replace them.  If anything, Spaces is necessitated by the city’s inability to build commercial space fast enough.

Commercial real estate, for what it’s worth, is booming in Toronto.

“Investors Lift Canadian Commercial Real Estate To New Heights”

Commercial transactions in Canada last year smashed the previous record by 38%.

Toronto accounted for a third of all transactions in Canada.

The pension funds, investment trusts, and huge private money wouldn’t be buying Toronto’s office towers if they didn’t think the city would be running low on space in the future.

And all the while, the people who work in tech, will have to live somewhere.

My client from San Fran has been telling me this for years.  He’s the single-most bullish person I have ever met when it comes to Toronto real estate, and he only owns his primary residence, so he’s not some over-extended investor cheerleading the market out of blind will.

That’s only one voice, but I can’t deny all the other chatter.

Time will tell.

In the meantime, perhaps we can jump into the ongoing debate over whether or not Sidewalk Labs is going to allow Google to take over our souls?

True story.  Google it…
