top 5 diviners characters!

Sorry I took a while with this anon I just wanted to write out my thoughts properly since I don’t get to talk about my Diviners bbs often :). #1-2 and #4-5 are basically tied in terms of my feelings for them so I just differentiated rank based on how satisfied I was with their arcs/overall stories especially based on my reread last winter break because reading them back to back rather than as they were being published threw some of that into relief for me.

Theta Knight — I Adore this girl, have since day one and on reread especially she has my favorite arc of any of these characters, I love how her learning to accept her powers works in tandem to her de-learning the feelings of guilt she has from her abusive childhood and marriage. She also has such cool powers not just the fire but I also love that she’s the diviner who is given the title of Witch specifically in BTDBY in a way the others don’t, and how she ends up kind of claiming it. She’s also so deeply loving as a person yet at the same time unwilling to put up with bs, very stubborn frank and down to earth about the things that matter which makes her dynamics with others great to read about especially this makes her friendship with Evie Really fun because I love Evie but she does need that type of tough-love-mixed-with-support from someone. I of course love her friendship with Henry they’re very Margo-and-Eliot coded bi girl (I mean I know that’s not technically canon for Theta but I’m convinced) gay man found family friendship <3 and her relationship with Memphis is lovely very few of those love-at-first-sight-instant-connection ships work for me but they’re one of the exceptions and the way the maturity and growth of their relationship develops over the course of the books is really something. 

Ling Chan — girl who is me. Excellent INTP representation for once and she’s brown and wlw too I stay winning :). Ling is such an important character to me personally I really relate to the way she thinks, her being very logical and skeptical by nature but also finding beauty in tradition and the theme of being caught between worlds in different senses. I also love her powers I find dream powers fascinating and imo this verse handles them the best in terms of explaining them and keeping them interesting  (and I say this as someone who’s favorite series is the raven cycle lol). She has such great dynamics with other chars I loved her toxic romantic friendship in the dream world with Wei-Mei and her friendship with Henry and Memphis and Theta I have mixed at best feelings about Jericho but he’s by far the most entertaining to me in his dynamic with her in the last book, and her clashing with Evie was handled pretty well and I liked her arc around internalized misogyny but I do think she got very little to do in the last book and she peaked in the middle books, which is why she’s slightly bellow Theta. She’s so special to me though. 

Evie O’Neill — she’s just an excellent protagonist so three dimensional and interesting while also being very charming and fun, and the right amount of frustrating at times but you still love her. She’s ‘swell :).I also was pleasantly surprised by some of the notes on mental health and grief that got touched on in her storyline. 

Memphis Campbell — the Diviners men rank pretty close for me but like with Theta the fact I was most satisfied with his arc overall solidifies his ranking. King of Crows is my least favorite of the four books (I’m a huge believer that middle book syndrome is fake and those are often the best/most interesting books in especially characters driven series and that’s true here) although I still have love for it but the full circle of his poems as the voice of tomorrow was top tier and I loved the growth in his confidence and his relationship with Isaiah. 

Henry Dubois — he’s only last because he got precious little to do in books that weren’t Lair of Dreams which is where he shone, but I love him his friendships with Theta and Ling are honestly my favorite dynamics in the group And I just, have a real soft spot for the guy similar to how I feel about Eliot from the magicians. 

honorable mention to Sam Lloyd who I also am v affectionate towards! Funnily enough I did not like him much my first time reading book 1 but I had a quick turn around on him and Samevie in lair of dreams (I. Love their fake dating plot in that book it’s the best ever). So yeah, he’s a good.

Similar to Kaede-chan, these are moments, and not what Rinka's like during the whole process... When Rinka's going through the whole process, Nagisa learns quick that she hides stockpiles of guns throughout the whole house, just to calm herself down when she's grumpy... ^^;;; Not real guns, mind you. She arranged a deal with Mister Karasuma to get a steady incoming supply of the old BB guns that were used for the assassination. But guns like that can still be threatening in the hands of a professional~... (人◕ω◕);;;

Touka-chan is at the middle of the herd in terms of being temperamental during the miraculous process... But, uh. She does give vibes that she might have moments of being passive-aggressive. In general, she's one of the cuddlier ones. ... Wants to cuddle Nagisa a lot during the whole process, that is. To make her feel better. Naturally, this is how wars get started, and Nagisa winds up under a "mountain" of girls while on the couch... (人◕ω◕);;;

Yuzuki-chan isn't so much "angry" during the miracle process as much as she is spewing even more references and just being quirkier in general... ^^;;; This is a consequence of trying to distract herself from the pain. We all have our ways of coping. Don't you judge her. (人◕ω◕);;;

-how is aot so heartwarming amidst all this tragedy. there's just these moments that are so heartwarming. that’s the point, isn’t it -it's an excellent choice that they delayed eren telling armin that 80% of humanity dies. it makes sense for armin to chat and enjoy the sights when in his mind the only place that's been destroyed for sure is marley, their natural enemy.

-"ONLY IMYR KNOWS" MY ASS! WE KNOW WHY, EREH! because mikasa was a strong woman who loved deeply the one person who could actually get to the paths and bring about change and cause mikasa to bring about change! idiot to the end. i'm sure armin will explain it to you the next time after the next time.

-lil snek armin wanting to provoke a reaction from eren with his mikasa stuff

-it's so armin, to want to bear eren's sins together with him, and it's so damn heartwarming seeing eren so moved at realizing he's not alone and that he won't be alone and i just, argh, ARGH. eren seeing that he's so unconditionally loved, armin accepting his own responsibility, like, "you're not alone, you were never alone, you weren't driven to this alone, you should not be blamed alone, you should not bear it alone." and they're FINE with that, is the thing. they find peace in that, in the fact that they'll share the burden and be in hell *together.* what's interesting to me is that eren doesn't contradict armin. he doesn't tell him "no, you're not going to hell." either he understands and acknowledges armin's complicity and sins in general, or he just appreciates the thought, i can’t decide, but either way he feels relief. eren and armin, i cry. they always had a strong relationship, but this just elevates them to top friendships of all time. the anime strengthens their bond so incredibly much. through their shared fate, friendship, goals and crimes, they will end up together because they paved this road together - along with so many others, with so many good intentions. it's this relationship that shone the most to me in the anime ending, whereas in the manga ending the focus feels more on mikasa (ofc marina inoue also killed it throughout the ep, so she elevated armin by 110%). -and visually: the hair and teeth on eren's hand vs the seashell in armin's, both covered in blood. armin, in the midst of hell, giving eren a symbol of peace, freedom, life. armin, eren's ride-or-die, who formed eren and eren formed him, showing eren that he will never leave him alone, smiling as he says they'll be together forever. eren finding peace and relief in the fact during his darkest moment. -i respect armin's acknowledgement that he is the catalyst of eren's idea of the outside world, and that he played a role in everything. eren the founding titan didn't sprout off the earth like a cabbage, he was led to this by every single person in his life and by his own personality, everyone is complicit. but armin, bb, that's not why you're going to hell if any of you go to hell. i'm pretty sure pre-rumbling, armin is the paradis soldier with the highest kill count of civilians, out of a plan he orchestrated. he leveled marley's port and everything surrounding it. let's start from there, lil cinnamon roll, yes? -it's interesting to see how differently eren's two strongest relationships play out in the end. for mikasa, he creates a dream scenario, a clean-cut version of himself that's genuine but not his current state, the what would-have-been if mikasa had given a different answer. mikasa needs calmness, kindness, an anchor, and that’s what eren gives her, the part of him that she never fails to see even when eren’s at his worst. to armin, he's his current self in all his glory. scared, pathetic, self-loathing, confused, messed-up, kind (eren's always been kind, that's as non-debatable for me as it is for mikasa), insightful etc. he cries, he screams, he reasons, he loves. he hugs armin so hard. he hides nothing, because armin's always seen eren's ugly side and vice versa. armin needs truth, not kindness. in a way, mikasa sees through eren’s worst self, whereas armin accepts eren’s worst self for what it is, and both are right, and both love him as he is, as they are.

-mikasa has been so alone, man. so alone. i HOPE that's jean. i hope it's jean that’s with her. no one could understand her better than he can -excellent choice that they show what levi et all are doing three years later, instead of where they are. nice that they're addressing the environmental aspect of it all. -i don’t know how to conclude this. aot is a masterpiece, and although in many ways it’s been a torture getting to know it, i love it with all i have. i cherish the characters deeply, i adore the story, i am in awe of the world-building, and it’s affected me so deeply and profoundly that i feel bonded to it. it’s something really close to my heart.

“BB Channel~ ☆ !”  rings that all too familiar, no good, troublesome voice. Belonging to the one and only devillish kouhai herself. Just what kind of trouble was she up to today?!

Her brows furrowing contemplatively, BB speaks quietly aloud. “Mhm...I wonder if this kind of opener is cliche nowadays?” She takes a few seconds to consider this possibility, before her High-Grade AI logic skills deduce it to be a waste of time to think about. Something-- someone-- far more important was before her, after all!

“Senpai! You made it! Welcome, Welcome!” She ushers Makoto forward, revealing what looks like a game show stage that definitely wasn’t here the day before, centered on a very cozy looking plush chair. “Take a seat, Beloved Contestant! You’re the special guest on BB’s ‘Beefy Bothersome Quiz!’ ”

She spins around on the spot, a giant screen lighting up directly on cue. The bright lights show a chibi version of Makoto standing on 3 platforms, and at the bottom is a giant BBQ sprite. “The rules are very simple~ ☆ !  I ask the questions, and you answer them~! If you get one wrong...” 

The chibi makoto sprite tumbles as the platform beneath him vanishes, leaving just 2 platforms between safety and certain...roasting. “Well, that’s bad, okay~?” She giggles delightfully as the original state of the game was restored-- 3 sturdy platforms to hold (Digital) Makoto up.

Just what was it she was hoping to achieve here? Perhaps she wanted to fill out her ‘mischief’ quota? Or, maybe this was her way of having some fun with her beloved senpai?  The engimatic butterfly of the moon continues to flap her wings beautifully, persuing her own whims...

“So, Senpai~! Are you ready to play~?”

Chan

He's going to be an absolute sweetheart if you're sick. Honestly, he will probably be the best at taking care of you, because that just comes naturally to him. You have a fever? He's ready with cold wipes. Your throat hurts? He's gonna warm up some soup for you. You're cold? He's gonna cuddle you super tight, even if it means getting himself sick too.

He's going to be super indulgent with you, getting you anything you wish to eat just so he can help keep you well-fed. His heart would swell with love watching you eat, and that little red nose of yours? He's melting already.

At the same time though, he's gonna put his foot down if you're being fussy. He won't rest until he has watched you swallow your medicines, and he's not letting you throw your blanket off even if you whine.

Minho

He will pretend to be annoyed at you for having gone and gotten yourself sick, but in reality, he's panicking. Needs a second to calm himself down, and once he's set, he's got everything under control. Will prepare all sorts of warm soups and foods for you, just so you can eat without hurting your throat. Will spoon-feed you without a doubt, calling you an idiot for not looking after yourself.

This man is going to resort to violence if you refuse to take your medicines, or if you're being fussy with your food. Will practically force the tablets down your throat, his glare shutting you up in an instant.

Will completely dress you up in warm clothes, a bunch of blankets on top of you making you look tiny. He'll keep grumbling non-stop about how he's forced to look after you, but actually, he just wants his energetic baby back.

Changbin

Will become a clingy, whiny mess if he ever finds you sick. He hates seeing you unwell, and wants to do everything he can to help you get well. He'll be a bit lost at first, but soon enough, he's going to become a one-man-army, your medicines, warm food, cold wipes, blankets, and cuddles ready at his disposal. Will hug you close under the blankets, refusing to let go even if you warn him.

He's going to whine about how you never take care of yourself and how he's super angry at you, but it's going to be hard missing the way his eyes go soft as he feeds you your favorite soup. He just loves you a lot, can't blame him.

Will hold you close all night long, a marathon of your favorite movies/dramas on play as he gently strokes your hair, your head on his chest, falling asleep with a content smile on your face.

Hyunjin

Is going to create some major drama over how you're always careless and how he's going to have to look after you. But you can clearly hear the worry in his voice and see how upset he is, on his face. He'll be armed with everything he thinks you're going to need, from your medicines to your favorite plushie. He'll even read to you if you feel like you can't sleep, and will grip your hand as if his life depends on it.

Will ask if you're feeling any better every ten minutes, and will totally clear both your and his schedules so that he can nurse you back to health without any disturbance. Sorry, JYP, but the comeback preparations are going to wait until his baby is alright.

Expect tons of kisses and a lot of cuddles, because he's not letting go even if you try to push him away. Not until he knows you're fine.

Jisung

At first, he's going to go into full-on panic mode, worry taking over him as he looks at you lying under the mountain of blankets. But soon enough, he'll have everything under his belt, eyes glazed with concern as he orders food from your favorite restaurant, eager to feed you so that you can take your medicine, because that means you get well sooner, right?

He's another super clingy one, insisting on holding your hand under the blankets even if he can't cuddle you. He just wants you to know that he's with you through this, and will be waiting for you to get well.

He won't tell you, but he's going to call either Chan or Minho up when you fall asleep, ranting to them about how he's so worried and how he hates seeing you sick. And you can't blame him, he just wants to see you well and happy.

Felix

This boy is going to be midway between becoming super clingy and keeping a level-head. He'll know just how to take care of you, and will do everything he can to make you feel better. Even if you don't feel hungry or are making a fuss about taking your medicine or adding a blanket, he's going to bribe his way into making you relent, usually by enticing you with your favorite brownies, made by him. Can't say no to that, now. Can you?

Once he's taken care of you and is satisfied, his clingy side will be back in action, his body wrapped around yours as he attempts to give you some "body heat."

He'll feed you with his own hands, smiling brightly when you finish the food. Expect a lot of sweet kisses as he prays to the heavens that you get well as soon as possible.

Seungmin

Another one who is going to keep his head if he ever finds you sick. Will know just what you need and when you need it, from your medicines to a warmer hoodie to your favorite movie. Will grumble a little bit about how you're annoying, but you can't miss the way he gives you the warmest smile ever when you thank him for taking such good care of you. Will rub soothing circles on your skin, using it as an excuse to keep tabs on your temperature.

He's not that good at cooking, so he'd rather just order takeout for you, his eyes lighting up as he takes in just how excited you look. He'll let you eat whatever you want, but only if you agree to take your medicine and eat your soup.

He'll care for you super well, and is going to make you fall in love with him even more.

Jeongin

Now this one is going to get on your nerves if you ever end up falling sick when dating him. He's going to tease you to no end about how you can't even take care of yourself. But behind his words, he's actually really concerned about you, and will do his best to make sure you have everything you need, and will not leave your side until he has nursed you back to perfect health. He'll take really good care of you, resorting to weird but effective tricks to handle your tantrums.

You don't want to take your medicine? He's going to annoy you so much you'll end up opening your mouth to scream at him. And then bam, the spoon is in your mouth.

You want cuddles? He's going to give them to you only when you finish up all the food he has brought you. He might seem annoying, but he really cares for you.

-genuinely, at least in my experience from watching it the first time, in the prettiness and novelty of the anime, the depth of the characters and of the plot flies over your head a little. yes, shenanigans, absurdity etc etc, but bsd is so much more than that, and it's so much easier to take that in when reading the manga, when you can sit with the panels.

-atsushi and aku-kun are so babies when they fight together, i can't :") someone protecc them

-listen, i don't want bad things happening to the agency, ever. but also, anything that discombobulates mr i-can-predict-everything-i'm-300-steps-ahead dazai-chan makes me happy.

-it's sweet how atsushi goes "dazai-san!" in his moment of panic when he sees the bartender's cut finger. miss doctor is right there, but atsushi calls to his number one senpai first, you know?

-you really do see the "anemic" part of fyodor, it's more pronounced than in the anime

-the trauma is strong with this one (*atsushi-kun and the orphanage director)

-dude, this is actually difficult to read. it's actually hard to read. (*the director's treatment of atsushi)

-it's just. it's so twisted, but atsushi and akutagawa are so good for each other. they're terrible *to* each other, but because of who they are as people, their natural behavior enables each other to save themselves from themselves.

-atsushi to aku-kun: "are you going?" no, he's going to hang around for tea and therapy. what kind of question is that, bb?

-there's something about dazai. you could say he's jaded. you could say he's calculating, sus, desensitized, moving strings. his guide to living is oda's guide to living, but. but there's still something so intrinsically nurturing about him. something so delicately caring. idk, that's how i perceive him.

-idk, i think one of the themes that comes out of bsd is "i'm not gonna save you; only you can save you; but you won't have to be alone while you save yourself." 'cause there's always a "we" implied in bsd. in every character's loneliness, there's a "we" that they belong to, there's people behind them, backing them up, reaching out in their clumsy, convoluted, twisted or unconscious ways.

-this is a complexity that's so important to me. "you were in hell and hell raised you right" and "you need to acknowledge both of these things, but you don't have to forgive any of it." it's a terrible thing to acknowledge, that something decent in you was created or reinforced because of something horrible that was done to you. it's bone-chilling. it's so important to me that atsushi can still cry/is allowed to cry/allows himself to cry over the death of his only (barbaric, unforgivable) father figure, even if he hated him, even if he can't forgive him, because he was such a huge part of his life, and that he doesn't have to explain why he is crying, if it's confusion or shock or relief or loss or all of those and then some; he can just cry.

and atsushi asks dazai what he's supposed to feel, and dazai doesn't tell him how to feel. he only gives him the facts. "you know what you know, an unforgivable and barbaric experience. here’s what you don't know, who that man was - not the monster looming in your mind, but an actual person. take that and do what you want with it. he was your father figure, and people usually cry when their fathers die, but it's you who gets to decide if that's you, if you consider him worth crying over." and atsushi doesn't have to decide. he can just allow himself to feel his feelings, without explaining them to us.

and i think that's very dazai of dazai too, 'cause that's what dazai does. he does his machinations and brings people where he wants them, but at the end of the day, the choice of what they do with their circumstances is always theirs. dazai makes highly highly educated guesses, but he doesn't *know*, he can't account for the unpredictability of humans, he can only adapt to it. he brought akutagawa where he needed him to be, but the choices were akutagawa's, from the moment they met. he brought kyouka where he needed her to be, but her choice to save the city was still hers. you could argue that they didn't have real choices since dazai brought them to a point where there could only be one inevitable outcome given their characters, but that's not true; isn't it dazai who says early on that there's always a choice? i don't remember, but there's always a choice. it's who they are that makes their choice inevitable (and in line with dazai's calculations), so in a sense it's a free choice that's slave to the characters' nature (my aot is showing).

-i have a soft spot for trench coat-less dazai, 'cause it's so casual. just chillin'. just botherin'. no hardships.

-i find it incredibly charming that out of work aku-kun is dressed in more casual clothes and not his usual outfit

-i'm sorry, higuchi is lovely. i don't know if it's her by herself, or that she acts this way for aku-kun of all people, but she's lovely.

-higuchi considers atsushi a "seasoned" foe, aw. seasoned. little baby tiger

-like, at this point "jinko" is just the port mafia's pet name for atsushi. not insulting or derogatory or anything.

-*shakes fist* FYODOOOOOR (right now he's one of my favorite antagonists)

His childhood days aren't complete until he says 'nee-san' at least once. The poor child is getting bullied by Tomo a lot too, so who does he come running to for help!?

"Onee-chan! Tomo- T-Tomo- waaAAAH! NEE-SANNN!"

Goodness, growing up flipped a switch in his personality but that's a talk for later

If you aren't holding his hand as you two walk around the Kaedehara Estate, he's in your arms like a literal bb

If he's not in your arms then he is sitting on your shoulders, giddily exclaiming that he is as tall as you are [even if he'll eventually grow to be taller-]

Kazuha clings to you. Nee-san must always be in his sight or else he'll either be (っ- ‸ – ς) or (ಠ╭╮ಠ)

Yeah, he's definitely more (ಠ╭╮ಠ)

"Nee-chan, stop hiding from me!"

Will lowkey get frustrated about it even if he's the one who wanted to play hide and seek lmao-

You understand why Tomo bullies him, he's cute. If your little brother hasn't found you in the course of ten minutes, he will cry for you

Even when you appear, his attempts to stop weeping 'because it makes him less of a man' will fail and he'll just look x2 cuter

Mm, everything's not sunshine and rainbows, though

The wealth of the clan has been diminishing as time passes, so naturally, its prestige follows

Since both your parents are occupied with thinking of ways to keep the clan's nobility, most —if not all— of Kazuha's attention is placed on you. His beloved nee-chan o(≧∇≦o)

You pamper him, but not to the point that he becomes spoiled. Disciplining him crumbles your heart [he looks so sad when he's reprimanded] but since it is for his betterment, you still do it. He's a quick learner, too.

Anything for his nee-san. Anything for nee-san!

One time when he sees you being scolded heavily for something that he did, he teared up, ran on his wobbly legs, and punched your father's legs asdfghjkl

"Don't hurt nee-chan!"

Ugh, why is he so adorable. You personally keep him away from other girls his age because they're already giving him the heart eyes- you know for a fact that all that baby fat is going away to be replaced by more defined features when he grows up

So oohlala, when adolescence kicks in and he's suddenly looking sharper? Heavens. The pink envelopes coming in endless. Unfortunately, however, your brother doesn't look interested. You know what caught his fancy?

Roaming. Wandering. Adventuring.

Since the clan is losing its power, no one honestly cares that he is shirking his 'responsibilities'. Sometimes, he goes away and doesn't return for days. Just your typical adolescent, but he's still your sibling. He still calls you nee-san :D

That is until both your parents have passed — until the Kaedehara name lost its status — and you were both alone.

You were eighteen then, but you proved yourself capable of being the heir by pragmatism alone. Earning money for you and your brother, taking over the chores, everything.

During this time, Kazuha had been teaching himself the ways of the blade with Tomo, who offered his help to you whenever he could.

And as you grow up — eventually, Kazuha does, as well.

"Welcome home, how was your walk?" Your sibling, now at the age when you took over the household, smiled.

"Ah, I had to come back for my katana. Do excuse me."

He passed by the dining table that was already set with plates and utensils, heading over to his room. His gentle yet straightforward response befuddled you without a doubt, but it hollowed your chest.

It feels like you're missing something.

"Don't wait up, I'll take longer than usual," he appears back in a rush, arranging the sheathed blade hanging by his waist.

"Oh, at least—"

"I'll see you soon, [Name]!"

His tuff of silver hair vanishes behind the panels — and you are alone.

Ah, this feeling was familiar..

It felt like the night you came upon your parents' unmoving figures.

The smile on your face was bittersweet.

You knew what was missing.

He wasn't calling you 'nee-san' anymore.
