hi! I might be childish but I am 100% agreeing with McGonagall not getting Ginny’s Christmas card…🙃

Can you please tell us some about her mindset? Is it just trying to get the school through this year, is it really though love, remorse or..?

the mcgonagall discourse continues to tickle me no end. anon i for one applaud an encourage any and all childishness. also i agree! dropping people from the christmas card list because you've got major beef with them is a time-honoured and noble tradition and ginny is right to uphold it

i don't want to say too much that will end up in the fic but! i think mcgonagall in beasts thinks she is trying to Do Her Best - for ginny, for the other students under her care, but also for hogwarts as an institution, which is an institution whose mission and ethos she really believes in. a lot of this is is (understandably, and not necessarily wrongly) bound up in her loyalty to her mentor, dumbledore, someone she didn't always agree with but whose vision for hogwarts she consistently throws her weight behind.

minnie's got a huge amount on her plate stepping up as headmistress in 1998. she's the headteacher of a student body who are individually and collectively traumatised, who are only just beginning to process what happened to them, and whose traumas are extremely complex and diverse and don't really have the tools to grasp each other's often very different but no less serious sufferings (obviously the the pureblood/half-blood students who endured life under the carrows during the war and the DA lot who actively resisted the carrows and paid a huge price for it, but also muggleborn students who were on the run, and all those who were in azkaban.) she's dealing with a lot of guilt for all that she couldn't shield her students from (more to come on this), and she's sincere in her belief that young people who have gone through enormous upheaval need structure, routine, accountability, and a kind of compassion that manifests as someone saying no, you can't punch whoever you like because they said something horrible to you. you do have to hand your homework in. you do need to not sneak out of the castle at night and make everyone worry about you. partly this is generational - she was born in 1935, she has a set of ideas about acceptable and unacceptable ways of expressing your distress as a child. but i think this is also a not inherently cruel or abusive child welfare philosophy, even if it doesn't really take on a lot of what we know of how trauma manifests in young people and adolescents. minerva would say: it's my job to look after my students, i'm the adult and authority figure, i need to reimpose and safeguard the social contract that holds an institution like a school together, and also to make sure that i care about each individual student while also managing the impact of students' behaviours on each other. (in canon, she repeatedly does enforce the rules in strong terms and doesn't make excuses when harry - a character who is well within his rights to act out given his life experiences - gets in a fight or fucks up and breaks the rules in ways that meaningfully impact his peers.)

when it comes to ginny, i think mcgonagall sees lots of herself in her. they share a fierce protective streak, they're both very loyal, they're both incredibly stubborn, and they both are petty as hell and show their emotions by way of biscuit/christmas card deprivation. but that also means mcgonagall expects more of ginny than most, especially as someone who rode hard for the hogwarts student body the preceding year. mcgonagall wants ginny to help her keep hogwarts standing and continue to play the part of a role model for her peers as someone (she knows) they look up to. ginny does not want to do that. and mcgonagall's massively frustrated that ginny has (also understandably) held her hands up and said fuck that, role model schmole model, i've gone through it and you're all now saying back to normal and pretending it never happened. what's hard is that they're both kind of right! but neither is able to say it. and that's why gryffindor girlies are so fun and massively annoying to smash into each other when doing the literary equivalent of playing dolls (writing fanfiction)

What's the last song you heard that made you think of Wilmon?

slakljdjg can I say the entirety of The Tortured Poets Department? because... i mean just about every single song reminds me of them, one way or another. whether it's the being broken up (The Black Dog, loml, Peter, The Albatross) or the more happy teenage love songs (The Alchemy, so high school), somehow, I'll find a way to make it about them.

Okay, maybe not everyyy single song... no idea how I can spin Clara Bow or But Daddy I Love Him into a Wilmon song, but a good chunk.

Though, I think the one where I really just think Wilmon is The Black Dog! The watching someone's life through a screen post-break up ("And so I watch as you walk/Into some bar called The Black Dog" vs Wille seeing Simon sing karaoke on Ayub's story), not really getting how someone can just forget everything that happened ("how can you just be over me? over us?"), realizing that no matter how much time passes, you will never fully be able to move on.

And of course the most important line: "Old habits die screaming", because of the way they can never truly let go of each other - even when it's bad, even when Simon tries to move on and find someone else, he will always be drawn to Wille (I think that line especially applies to season 2)

Let's see, I already put a first round of five out there, now let's maybe go with five that don't see a lot of engagement but that I still like a lot and think they're very worthwhile!

Flying was prompted to me by @sralinchen, and boy did I have a blast with it! It's an AU with no artifacts or anything, in which Myka flies to where Claudia lives, in order to surprise her - but Claudia has flown to where Myka lives, for the same reason, and so now they're very much not in the same place - and then Claudia asks a friend who lives in the same building to help Myka out. And that friend turns out to be a certain dark-haired British person, in this case with a very sassy non-binary kid. So. Much. Fun!!

Roppongi Tokyo Butler Café was a gift for my wife - we both love Japan, and have traveled there twice, and I hope that a bit of the feeling for that country comes across. It's another "no artifacts" AU, and told in 2nd person POV, which I know is not everyone's cuppa. It has a vibe to it that I find hard to describe - ephemeral perhaps? Eclectic? Let me know which word you'd use!

Through tensed stillness is a little fic in which [spoilers spoilers spoilers] - a continuation of two stories, one by Ericine and one by @ussjellyfish! It's a concoction containing Philippa Georgiou, Ezri Dax, and in the margins Kathryn Janeway and Beverly Crusher too!

Coffee and Chocolate Cake is a little one-shot in which Kathryn Janeway, fresh from the Delta Quadrant, sees Deanna Troi for a psych eval. It's hard to open up - but a little coffee and chocolate cake helps pave the way.

And last but not least, I'll list 1899 (The Prequel? Sequel? Another Reboot?) here as a stand-in for several story premises/set-ups/beginnings that I will probably never finish but wish I could (So Many Wips, So Little Time). There have been several fics and Tumblr essays about how it would go if Myka found herself in 1899, a fish out of water on Helena's turf, and this is my take on it. I still like what my brain came up with, a lot, but the story doesn't have the "keeps me in its grip until I've written all of it" power, unfortunately! I did make a Tumblr post with ideas for how it could go on, and linked it in the AO3 fic, but yeah, that's all there is.

Hi anon! I actually don't. I've thought about it but only vaguely. I think if I did they'd be little sneaky things, like between fingers or on my wrists or on my neck behind an ear. But I don't have a great relationship with my physical self and I'm not good at spending money on things that are just for me.

thanks for asking! it's definitely an interesting genre mix (some rock, some pop, some alt, edm, industrial metal, khiphop??? musicals???) but I love it and it's an integral part of my writing process.

super different from when I was writing both sides now and I ONLY listened to joni mitchell, although kind of the same in the sense that the music is the thematic and tonal core of the story. you can bet for the next longfic I write there will be musical inspiration and a playlist. «What do you think you’re doing…?» Eobard hisses, but when the other wrenches his arm free he doesn’t force it. 

«Oh because you don’t think I saw?» Robern leans in, and with his height he easily towers over his older brother. «I wonder how many other interesting things I’d find, if I were to pay more unannounced visits. Or if I were to just turn this on-» He reaches over and motions to flick the monitor back on. Eobard grabs his wrist again, gritting his teeth and simmering with rage as Robern fixes him with a level stare. «Or if I were to confiscate your equipment for a search, even.»

«Are you done?» Eobard clicks his tongue. «You’re not a cop yet. Overriding the security systems of my living space is an infraction, and so is stealing a master keycard from whoever you took it from. Those things leave a trace on the cubicle’s log, so now I’m the one who wonders what would happen if I were to submit those logs to the-»

Police training made Robern quicker, enough that Eobard doesn’t expect the blow from the way his brother’s body slightly rears back. It’s an elbow hit below his chin which knocks him back hard, and by the time his head stops spinning he’s being pinned to his desk again, arms brought up as the zip ties get secured around his wrists and a nook of his holographic library. Eobard grunts, a tremor breaking out at the feeling of blood trickling through his hair and wetting his neck. Stunned as he is, he can’t focus either on the instinct to defend himself or on the learned, ingrained lesson that hitting his brother is something he just can’t do. And so Eobard ends up just trying to pull away as his vest is grabbed and tugged to the point of ripping open on his chest, down to the already disheveled state of his bottoms. He’s held still by the hair on the top of his head, and the momentary doubling of his vision suggests he has to be concussed.

He ends up wondering what on Earth has happened that got Robern so riled up. Something at the academy, probably. It is in fact none of Eobard’s business, but he’s never been manhandled like this, because this… it’s worse than usual, isn’t it? He’s never been tied down. Being hit is not new, though. The way his chest is being gripped and squeezed isn’t, either. But there’s a glint in his younger brother’s eyes that feels almost entirely foreign.

«You’d let me do anything to you.» The younger Thawne mutters under his breath, roughly yanking open Eobard’s knees to fit himself in between. «You are a disgrace. Letting your own brother have his way with you.»

what is your favorite la squadra ship?

Prosciutto/Formaggio definitely! They are my two biggest faves of the nine (though I would like to add that I have grown to enjoy everyone a good bit, else I wouldn't even have a la squadra side blog), and everything from their appearance to their personality and dynamic tickles me. I still have stuff I would love to write for them, if the gears would turn that way! I've talked about this a fair bit by now (you can check the tags if you want more!) but there is just something about an attractive eldritch abomination and this one little birthday boy they enjoy, ehehe.

Where did the idea of Persephone being hungry and starved making her having no choice but to eat the pomegranate seeds come from??

Hi! short answer: Ovid + Nathaniel Hawthorne + average "Greek mythology manuals".

Long answer:

Important to remember that Greek gods don't need to eat food as humans do, that's what makes them different from us. I have some posts about it.

The Ancient Greek written version that mentions the pomegranate feeding is the Hymn to Demeter. In this context, the pomegranate works as a symbol for marriage and life-death metaphors.

A very late Greek source ("Pseudo-Apollodorus" Bibliotheca) says that Persephone ate being unaware of the consequences. This is a late source, it's like 2nd century AFTER Christ. Saying that Persephone was unaware sounds very impossible to me since I) she is a goddess, ii) her mother comes to be the goddess of grain and fruits, iii) pomegranates were sacred to Aphrodite and Hera. iv) Greek gods are already powerful since they were babies or children (like Hermes). So in that context, Persephone being "unaware" of what a pomegranate means, it's kind of non-sense.

Then, we have Ovid who was a roman poet, and also late period. Ovid changed a lot of things in the myths (he had artistic and political reasons for that). In his version of the myth, Persephone secretly eats the pomegranate by herself (no feeding from Hades) and Ascalaphos tells everyone. Ovid doesn't say that Persephone eats due to hunger, but he says that Persephone was "fasting" and broke the fasting by eating the pomegranate. I can't tell exactly if Ovid wanted it to be like "hungry Persephone", but it seems more than likely.

Since Ovid became the most "popular" source for Greek myths (instead of actual Greek authors....) most of the "Greek mythology" manuals and books follow his versions of the myths. So, the average myth summarized myths go with the "Persephone was wandering in the underworld and broke her fasting to eat the pomegranate seeds".

I especially blame Nathaniel Hawthorne for the "hungry Persephone" depiction, since apparently was and still is a popular source of "Greek myths" for children. There is even an illustration done by Virginia Frances Sterrett. The retelling feels kind of creepy to me (because he depicts Persephone-Proserpina as some... little girl? abducted by the old man, but anyway) The thing is that he makes Persephone say: "and having seen no fruit for so long a time, and being faint with hunger, I was tempted just to bite it."

So, in conclusion, we have all these stupid misconceptions because people read anything but actual Greek myth sources. :(
