Do the Dutch get offended when you say they're from Holland instead of the Netherlands?

Depends per person, I'd say? I've heard from some people that they don't really like it, I think because there's also provinces called North Holland and South Holland and those parts would make the 'actual' Holland, which is not the entirety of The Netherlands.

I for myself don't mind it at all, as far as I know Holland is also just another name for our entire country, as it's been used like that in past by ourselves as well as other countries. I use it myself too if people don't know much about The Netherlands, and they often do recognize it when I call it Holland.

However. We do get offended if you call it (a part of) Germany 😂

Er... yes and no. So I used to live in Germany and spoke basic German at the time, and then later in high school I learned French. But it's been so long since I used either of them regularly that I've forgotten a ton, and whenever I do try to speak them again, I end up somehow combining both into some abomination. I'm glad my German husband takes pity on my language skills.

On a geekier note, I also knew both Sindarin and Quenya once upon a time, but, again, I've since forgotten it all. Especially since those aren't languages you encounter anywhere in life.
