Book: Beloved By Toni Morrison Film: Beloved (1998) Beloved is a 1987 novel by the American writer Toni Morrison. Set after the American Civil War, it tells the story of a family of formerly enslaved people whose Cincinnati home is haunted by a malevolent spirit. Beloved is inspired by an event that actually happened: Margaret Garner, an enslaved person in Kentucky, who escaped and fled to the free state of Ohio in 1856. She was subject to capture in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850; when U.S. marshals burst into the cabin where Garner and her husband had barricaded themselves, she was attempting to kill her children, and had already killed her two-year-old daughter, to spare them from being returned to slavery. Morrison had come across an account of Garner titled "A Visit to the Slave Mother who Killed Her Child" in an 1856 newspaper article published in the American Baptist, and reproduced in The Black Book, a miscellaneous compilation of black history and culture that Morrison edited in 1974. Beloved is a 1998 American psychological horror drama film directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Thandiwe Newton. Based on Toni Morrison's 1987 novel of the same name, the plot centers on a former slave after the American Civil War, her haunting by a poltergeist, and the visitation of her reincarnated daughter. Despite being a box office bomb Beloved received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design for Colleen Atwood, the film received mostly positive reviews, and both Danny Glover and Kimberly Elise received praise for their performances. Reminiscence (2021)

Reminiscence often - too often - makes you recall great film noir and cerebral science fictions. It's a bit like if Sunset Boulevard or China Town were set inside Inception or Minority Report but never reached the level they should. Nevertheless, its mystery contains enough novel ingredients and its take on familiar elements are enough to carry you through it.

In the near future, Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman) makes a living using technology that allows people to revisit their cherished memories with a clarity that’s comparable to traveling back in time. One day, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) walks in with a simple request, catches his attention, becomes his lover, then his obsession. When she suddenly disappears, he feverishly searches for her, despite the objections of his assistant, “Watts” (Thandie Newton).

I like the way writer/director Lisa Joy takes the classic noir setting and reimagines it. This Miami is set after global warming has made daytime so uncomfortable everyone lives at night. Rising oceans mean the parts of the city that aren’t underwater are walled off with barriers so it feels perpetually claustrophobic. The streets are always wet, a war in the past has led to an even bigger gap between the rich and poor. There's widespread corruption and unscrupulous businessmen have scooped up the choice bits of dry land while the rest scrambles to stay above water. Nick is sort of a classic private detective (he even narrates the story) in that his business allows him to investigate the past. That’s all good. What’s lacking is that deep plunge into the idea of revisiting memories. Aside from a few aspects of the conclusion, there isn’t much reason for the futuristic stuff. Nothing’s said about stealing memories, implanting them, reality becoming blurred, how what we remember becomes distorted or could be altered, etc.

Another aspect that needed work was the relationship between Mae and Nick. We’re not supposed to really know how legitimate it is. Was she in love with him, or was it a ruse? We know what he believes but we have doubts - which is good. Certain elements of the intertwined plots are reasonably easy to unravel but this one is in that sweet spot. I’m not sure the obsession is 100% there, however. Maybe Jackman’s just too handsome to be haunted by her - no matter how ravishing she may be -, it’s too much of what we've seen before, or we needed to see more of them before she disappears for us to want them reunited at any cost. It isn’t necessarily the performances, it’s a gap between the script and the final product. On a more positive note, Lisa Joy handles the action scenes impressively. They’re chaotic in a way that makes them feel real but remain easy to follow.

Despite a well-constructed world and questions you want answered, Reminiscence is just short of where it wants to be. Still, it has enough to earn itself a mild recommendation. (August 18, 2021)
