i finally watched the last season of the good place, and that finale really made me cry TWICE
like as in the first cry had completely finished and i was back to normal, and then it made me cry a second time
well done, bravo. this show managed to stay true to its ideals all the way through until the end.

so the good place is widely lauded on this site for its takes on morality and capitalism, which i totally agree with
but i think it should get more recognition for the line "all humans are aware of death. so we're all a little bit sad all the time. that's just the deal. we don't get offered any better ones. and if you try and ignore your sadness, it just ends up leaking out of you anyway. i've been there, and everybody's been there. so don't fight it. in the words of a very wise bed bath and beyond employee i once knew - go ahead and cry all you want. but you're gonna have to pay for that toilet plunger."

“Picture a wave, In the ocean. You can see it, measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it's there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It's a wave.
And then it crashes in the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. You know it's one conception of death for Buddhists: the wave returns to the ocean, where it came from and where it's supposed to be.”

*spoilers for The Good Place*
At the end of The Good Place when Eleanor goes through the door, and her cosmic dust or whatever is sent back into the universe, it goes to other people. Eleanor became that guy’s ‘little voice’ that she described the entire past four seasons. They had mediocre lives, worked to become their best selves in the afterlife, and then when they are done in the afterlife, they influence good things for people who are still alive. The good that you put into the universe is everlasting, and will continue to inspire people to do good things.

Hi! I follow 'the good place' tag and saw your cry for distraction. Seeing as I don't know your blog at all, may I ask: Do you have any uncommon headcanons about tgp that you'd like to share? Additionally/Alternatively, do you have a favourite member of team cockroach? Why (are they your favourite/do you not have any favourites)? Good luck on your grades!
hey! thanks for the ask dude, even though we’ve never interacted before. I don’t talk about tgp a ton on here but it is my #1 favorite sitcom. so thanks for this opportunity to ramble a little bit 💯
this is only sort of a headcannon? it’s more of a connection I made that might not have necessarily been intentional. in the scene where jason and tahani break off their casual relationship (I think it’s from s2ep10 “best self” ?) jason starts telling a super unhinged story about robbing a pet store with his mom, then finishes it off with “it was all a dream.” but then, in s4ep8 “the funeral to end all funerals” we find out that jason’s mom actually died of cancer when he was really young. as we know, in jason’s family, commiting crimes and going through with half-baked get-rich-quick schemes was an important part of his family dynamic, and that’s basically the entire basis of his relationship with his dad.
basically, now I just can’t stop thinking about a teenage jason, who lost his mom a few years back, having a dream about doing a scheme with his mom— actually being able to bond with someone who was taken from him too soon.
I have no idea if this was intentional, but it’s canon to me lmao. he just misses his mom :(
also, it’s really cool to go through all of jason’s unhinged anecdotes from his life on Earth. everything he says connects, and just. his whole backstory is So well thought out, even when we just get tiny snippets of memories and stories throughout the series. I guess you could say that for all four of the humans, but the continuity in jason’s stories stands out most to me. this show is on another level and I love it so much
and, obviously I love all the members of team cockroach. it’s so so difficult to try to pick a favorite. they all have amazing character development throughout the show (tgp has some of my favorite character work I have ever seen), they’re all funny, and all of the actors really put their entire souls into their roles. honestly, michael is probably my favorite (ted danson is phenomenal, and all his line deliveries and mannerisms are just really entertaining to me.) but, I really do love all of them and picking a favorite is so difficult. I could write an essay on why I love each of them lmao. leaving a picture of them here as a sign off :)

Deborah: "I want... (changing course) you to do what's best for yourself."
WHAT?! What do you mean by changing course JPL? What was she supposed to say before she changed her mind?

Also, "the opposite of a slap"? They really worded it that way? Damn you, guys.

Not me sitting here wondering if Michael continued to live in Eleanor and Chidi's house when he got back to TGP after he died or he found it too hard to stay there without them (because what's the fun of drinking someone's almond milk if they're not there to be annoyed by it?) so he finally designed his own house. But he couldn't bear to see it removed so it became a permanent classroom for philosophy lectures.

man, i wish The Good Place would've been more upfront about how the entire "soulmates" concept was literally just made up by The Bad Place for Michael's torture experiment. the show never outright acknowledges this, and yet, towards the end of season 1, a huge portion of the conflict and torture comes about through figuring out who likes who and the moral implications of confessing love and the expectations of love versus "dying alone" as it were. and i'm actually kind of frustrated they never brought it up again! the show takes soulmates as a real concept up until like...the series finale, maybe? if i remember correctly?
if only the show's creators had taken one teeny tiny step forward and been more overt about our society's views on love literally equating to torture. but alas, alloromantic folks will never take that extra logical step. alloromantic people accidentally imply all the time that, on some subconscious level, they understand that the societal weight we put on romance is oppressive and stifling. AND YET. it's still too scary for them to outright denounce romance, because it holds too much social and cultural weight (as both a concept and an institution). so that's fucking frustrating.
it's like...yes, you're literally so close to understanding the problem here, guys. im begging you to just make the connection and say it outright.

i measure my mental state based on how close i am to willingly rewatching the good place series finale. it’s a pretty foolproof metric.

What's an example of a story you've seen with a really strong opening but weak or mediocre ending?
i mean soooooo many tv shows and it's not even funny. i'll never forgive the good place for not living up to its potential. cxg kinda fell off once they started dickriding nathaniel (but it's still an overall great show). ted lasso s2 sucked. idk there are obviously so many examples but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment.
