Paul Hollywood really is the type of guy that would go to Mexico one time and think that he’s an expert on Mexican baking…

I've watched enough culinary shows that when I cook for my family, I'm either waiting for a handshake or to be called an idiot sandwich.
There's really no in-between.

I'm watching The Great British Bake Off ten years too late and why are the hosts allowed to be in the personal space of the contestants this is the 4th time one of those twits has damaged food and I'm not that far in

I feel like maybe part of the impact of Our Flag Means Death is its relation to other shows like it that we're used to; it's like watching The Great British Bake Off when you're only used to watching typical American cooking/baking competitions.
I know that I personally flock back to this show, feeling like there's just something so unique about it. And I truly think it's its underlying, deep commitment to compassion and humanity, both within and beyond the narrative.
Like Con O'Neill said at C2E2, the show just seems kind—but that doesn't mean that the stakes aren't high. And like TGBBO, there is still anticipation and drama and angst, but the drama and angst aren't at anyone's expense. You care about the stakes because you care so deeply about the people, but even more, the people care about each other.
Sure, there's the clashing of characters and certain people do poke fun at one another, but it's only for their choices and never for intrinsic aspects of those characters' identity. And during any instances of true harassment, the tormentors, rather than the objects of their persecution, are the ones that come out feeling ostracized for having acted the way they did.
This show truly is unique, and it hits all of these notes so perfectly. I hope that people creating media will study it for years to come.
