“Don’t look at me like that.” Bucky murmured, his eyes pleading.
“Like what?”
“Like you’re worried.”
“Well, I am worried.” Sam leaned closer, their voices hushed. They didn’t have a lot of privacy right now, what with being with Zemo on the plane and all. “Having to be the Soldier again will be tough, and I- I really don’t want you to do that.”
“I have to.” Bucky shrugged, as if it was no big deal. Sam could read him, though, at least most of the time. He was scared.
“You don’t. We can try and figure out something else-”
“Sam. This is important. I don’t wanna waste time trying to find another solution that might not even exist. Besides, do you really wanna spend more time with Zemo than absolutely necessary? Because I don’t.”
“Okay, you got me there.” Sam admitted. He reached out to take Bucky’s hand and intertwined their fingers. “You’re sure you’re okay with it, though?”
Bucky was silent for a moment, his face still, but Sam could see all the fear, panic, and uncertainty in his eyes.
“It’ll be fine.” he answered finally, smiling weakly. It wasn’t exactly the answer to Sam's question, but that was kind of an answer in itself. He was not sure, but still willing to go through with it for a cause.
“Yeah.” Sam nodded, trying to assure them both. He really didn’t want to put Bucky through this, but he also knew there was no point arguing. This was important, and besides, Bucky could be stubborn. “Just remember it’s all pretending. You’re not him anymore. You’re free and this is your choice, no one’s forcing you, okay? Like I said, we can change the plan-”
“Sammy.” Bucky interrupts, his voice soft and quiet. “I know all that. I’m gonna be okay, I promise. I’m more worried about you, undercover is not your strong suit.” he smirked.
“Whatever.” Sam rolled his eyes. He was nervous, to be honest, but Bucky’s safety and well-being were his priority. “I’ll be right there next to you, yeah? We’ll get through this, together.” he squeezed Bucky’s hand, really wanting to hug and hold him right now. They weren’t about to let their guard down and be vulnerable next to an enemy though.
“Relax, it’ll be fine.” Bucky smiled softly, but once again, it didn’t reach his eyes. Sam hated this whole thing, and just wanted it to end, so that they can just go home together.

I don’t like how Sam was brushed aside this episode. He felt like a side character in his own show. He wasn’t involved in much, and didn’t even know about breaking Zemo out. Given the first two episodes of this show, I have hope that this will be remedied in the next few episodes. There’s nothing wrong with Bucky getting more screentime, since he’s also an important character, but I hope the next few episodes aren’t only Bucky-focused. There needs to be a balance. But I don’t think fans should be so quick to throw the whole show out. We saw what they did last episode. We saw how much focus was on Sam in the narrative. We still have half the show left.

1 x03 was the most entertaining so far and the hardest to watch for me. Shit is getting real for both protagonists.
Bringing Zemo into the mission forces Bucky to deal with his trauma and find his identity way faster than he is ready to and it is heartbreaking to watch. Especially when Zemo leaves no chance to mock him and mentally torture him.
We see Bucky gathering all his strength and will as he walks in Zemo’s cell, so he can work with his because he has to. When Zemo (like the asshole he is) starts blasting the code words at his face Bucky almost smiles, satisfied that he doesn’t have control over him any more.
Then Zemo clarifies “Just wanted to see how the new you reacts to the old words...” bringing up what we see Bucky straggling to prove since the first episode, that he is not The Winter Soldier anymore; he is James Bucky Barnes. We instantly see the terror in his eyes as Zemo stares intensely at them. He is not looking away, he is not even blinking, he is fighting to prove a point, mostly to himself.
But then “Something is still there.” breaks him. He looks down, only for a second, trying to silence the part of him Zemo awakened, the part that believes he is still a monster even with his mind cleared. Doesn’t say anything, there is a mission he has to focus on.
And that’s what he does for the rest of the episode.
He has to literally relive his trauma, portray the winter soldier, obey to orders and hurt people. He becomes the nemesis he is fighting and gets lost in it.
The question hits him again harder than before all this mess. What if it’s not the words that bring out the monster? What if the monster is him?
You can see he is fighting back tears.
Just some moments that hit me hard. Once again, OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE by Sebastian Stan, I will never get tired of saying it.
