May 29, 1953 ... 2023 70 years ago, Mount Everest/Chomolungma conquered. Indeed it was a British-made 33 mm Smiths A409 wrist watch which was worn ON the top of Everest but Rolex 6098 watches were worn/carried TO the top of Everest. Since 1933, Rolex had been sponsoring Himalayan expeditions and secured a patent for the “Explorer” in January 1953. Remember it could have been Rolex first ON top of Mount Everest if British climbers Charles Evans and Thomas Bourdillon made it on May 26, 1953 but had to return after being very close to the summit. Three days later Edmund Hillary & Tenzing Norgay made it to the top! The 200+ years old Pen-Y-Grwyd hotel in Snowdonia - Wales was the birthplace & homebase of British Mountaineering. The place where training and testing of oxygen equipment for those Himalayan expeditions took place. A wonderful setting which was revisited by the 1953 expedition members during anniversaries! Ce sont les mots d’Edmund Hillary quand il débarque, avec son compagnon de cordée Tenzing Norgay, sur le sommet le plus haut du monde. L’Everest et ses 8 848 mètres sont enfin vaincus.

Nous sommes le 29 mai 1953, il est 11 h 30, deux hommes pénètrent sur une terre jamais foulée, le « sommet des dieux » comme aiment à le dire les poètes des cimes. L’un est néo-zélandais. Il a trente-quatre ans, il est apiculteur de profession et grand marcheur. L’autre est indien et sherpa, agile et sportif lui aussi. Il a trente-neuf ans, et a déjà participé à des expéditions anglaises et suisses. Là-haut, les deux alpinistes ne resteront que quinze minutes. Hillary prend une photo de son compagnon qui déplie à sa demande les drapeaux de l’Inde, du Népal et du Royaume-Uni qu’il avait soigneusement enroulés sur son piolet avant de les agiter au-dessus de sa tête. Une scène cocasse qui amusera son photographe : «  Il est dramatique ainsi, revêtu de son volumineux équipement, ses drapeaux claquant furieusement dans le vent. Si elle est techniquement réussie, j’ai le sentiment que l’image sera excellente. Je ne prends pas le temps de demander à Tenzing de me photographier. Pour autant que je sache, il n’a jamais fait de photo et le sommet de l’Everest n’est pas l’emplacement rêvé pour une première leçon. » Leur exploit est le fruit d’une entreprise colossale qui a fait appel à 14 alpinistes, 22 Sherpas et 362 porteurs afin d’acheminer depuis Katmandou dix tonnes d’équipement et de provisions au camp de base puis dans les neuf camps installés jusqu’au sommet. ‘‘The Crowning Glory, Everest is Climbed***”, titre le quotidien News Chronicle du 2 juin 1953. L’article est dithyrambique : « Excellentes nouvelles pour la Reine. Hillary l’a fait. Nouvelles glorieuses le jour du couronnement ! L’Everest – l’Everest invincible – a été conquis. Et conquis par des hommes de sang et de race britannique. » Il faut dire que cette expédition victorieuse coïncide avec le couronnement de la reine d’Angleterre, Élisabeth II, donnant d’emblée à cet exploit une portée symbolique. Le télégramme signifiant le succès de l’expédition britannique est, en effet, parvenu à Londres le 1er juin 1953, juste avant que ne démarrent les festivités royales. Cette expédition alpine était la neuvième tentative britannique, et la première qui réussissait officiellement, balayant ainsi 32 années d’échecs. « L’Everest c’était bien, mais ce n’était pas le plus important », déclarera pour sa part Edmund Hillary qui mettra ensuite sa notoriété au service des populations locales, valorisant ainsi les Sherpas.
