While I also appreciate official liscensing of great animes (regarding Heaven's Design Team): the YT's translation from Muse Asia addressed Kanamori/Venus using he/him pronouns and while I don't know if the manga source material ever made it clear about Kanamori's ID, I always assumed (going off of wiki pages and the English fan-scanlations) that she's a trans woman using she/her. I thought that's certainly concerning. Can anyone clear this up please?

I can't find any sources on the fan wiki listing her as female(which, to be clear, they do! wikipedia explicitly refers to her as a trans woman, btw) such as interviews or page discussion, just comments that anyone can leave(which are rife with transmisogynistic bullshit), so I'm not sure where it's actually been clarified/stated outright.

on the one hand I do think it would be really cool if voice directors cast actors regardless of gender, like i've thought about this a lot before actually,

but on the other hand, having a character like Kin-chan officially be a trans woman is just such a blessing, I really hope they don't backtrack on it.

Hanase from Tamako Market was another female character voiced by a male seiyuu wherein her gender is never called into question(though Japanese fans unfortunately tend to regard her as an okama - heads up that this is a controversial term even in Japan),

but I suspect both of these characters are subject to the same translation issue. Japanese doesn't actually use a lot of gendered language - in particular pronouns do not work the same as they do in english.

I often notice, rather than pronouns(kare/kanojo/kareshi) formal speech tends to usually favour phrases such as "ano hito/ano onna/ano otoko" (that person, that woman, that man), which means faithfully translating to English often means either making an assumption or leaving pronouns out entirely.

Muse Asia is definitely getting a lot of flack & people don't tend to have much faith in their free translations(which seem to maybe be lifted from fansubs groups without credit)

Honestly with that in mind, I advise just waiting for the eps to be available for free on Crunchyroll.

I can't remember if Tamako Market's Hanase-san is ever shown using a particular side of the bathhouse, but Kanamori is shown bathing with Meido in the women's bath. This is not questioned &, imho, it's clear that Kin-chan is regarded as a woman by her peers in no uncertain terms.

Saturday June 19th

This week's anime binge: Sorry for the delay - Record of Ragnarok came out and I wanted to do that one for this week (in replacement of Kyousougiga which will be pushed to next week.) I ended up running out of time at work so I'll post record of Ragnarok tomorrow in addition to the ongoing shows from this season.

Vivy Spring 2021 - 13 Episodes I can't believe I've put this off until now - this isn't another 86 where it's a 10/10 but it's something I probably would've been pretty stoked to watch and started sooner had I known it were about androids and interactions with humans over a century. I think it's a great concept - not one that I think I've seen before tbh I love the Detroit feels to it and how the protagonist isn't inherently for or against anything but does what they feel is right. I like that over the few episodes you see her humanity increase and her understanding of things affect her more. There's a huge contrast between the first episode and the last in term of her character. There are a few things that I didn't think were great - I feel like episode 12 was very sub-par and the ideas behind it were overused with time travel stuff. But I feel that the finale brought it back to the original idea and redeemed that and brought it full circle. In the end, that's the only way they could've finished the show and I think the best way to describe it is that it's a very complete story. 8/10

Heaven's Design Team Winter 2021 - 13 Episodes This isn't something that should be binged... Each episode is informative and interesting but it isn't really a story so watching back to back informative comedy isn't really great. Tho - the concept is fun and worth checking out. It's essentially coming up with the thought processes behind the creation of animals on earth and all the weird things that exists. Very fun to watch, you honestly learn so much and each episode has something new. I - episode 10 is a different entity all together.. I'll never look at naked mole rats the same way... Thanks to this show I now have a new interest in Giant River Otters and I had no fucking idea they could get to nearly 6 feet and 75lbs.... they can fight off caimans... South America has some scary ass shit running around. (this tunnel also lead me to finding out about wolf otters which are now extinct but used to be the sizes of wolves, over 100lbs and were a big predator in prehistoric times.) 7/10 (9/10 for the otter episode) Current Thoughts on Record of Ragnarok: I'm 6 episodes in, now low-key I'm expecting to be disappointed and that in the end Zeus will decide to allow humanity to continue existing purely because he enjoyed the fights and wants to do something again in the future. The longer the fights drag out - I'm also starting to feel like the second half is gonna be cut short and it'll be disappointing or they'll push it onto another season. If somehow they continue with the interesting stories on the gods and people and keep up the same pace - it might be worthwhile - tho could've been better with a 24 episode season instead to do it all in one go. 1 thing - This for sure would've been too slow to watch week/week but is an excellent show to binge just for fun. Edit - I forgot to add next weeks binge anime: Kyousougiga Catch up on Edens Zero (Shadow's House)

Winter 2021 marks the beginning of my anime reviews! below are my thoughts about the anime i watched this past season! (this is NOT spoiler free) ♡

Winter 2021 Season;

Tenchi Souzou Design-bu / Heaven's Design Team

i'm incredibly glad i picked this anime up when i did! this anime season was heavy as hell and i'm so glad to have had a more lighthearted and funny series to ease the tension every week. although simple in its premise, every episode was just delightful and trying to guess what animals they were creating was so much fun!

for being such an easygoing anime they gave us canon trans rep without ever making the lovely Venus the butt of an untastful joke. actually, not once was there a crass or unnecessary joke despite the multiple opportunities, instead this anime runs with the absurdity of the situation and never takes itself too seriously. although the design team has such an unusual job at hand they're a happy dysfunctional family that cares for one another in their own ways. i loved getting to enjoy their shenanigans each week!

Rating: 9/10

Past Seasons;

Jujutsu Kaisen - Fall 2020

i have nothing but good things to say about this anime! incredible score, animation, and my god that use of lighting! everything from the action sequences to the somber moments are animated beautifully.

by far my favorite aspect of this anime is how well it trims the fat of a typical shonen. they cut right to the point without rushing or making you feel like something's misisng. and all the characters actually feel like real people, that's how well written this is.

despite the setting and universe all the characters feel like unique individuals in their own right, free from too many tropes that normally box shonen characters into predictable archetypes. while still fitting the themes of its genre, JJK does well at dropping the usual narratives in favor of giving us characters that feel modern in their way of thinking and interacting with their given obstacles. even the antagonists stray from being standard bad guys, enough to where we can't always draw a clear line between their words and actions.

also did i mention it's funny? the humor is so aptly timed and delivers respite from the serious moments without taking away from them either. getting to see Mahito and co. during their down time playing games and just hanging out, which makes them feel more real in an unexpected way. hell, how often do we get to see antagonists playing Life or vibing on the beach? even the way we're introduced to the antagonist is amusing while still making the severity of the situation known. all in all i'm very glad i picked this up and can't wait for more!
