hey i saw your reply on a post abt entry level jobs that arent retail suggesting data entry via a temp agency - were you able to do this successfully and if so, how did you find a temp agency? ive been trying to find an entry point to data entry specifically & havent had any idea where to start. sorry if this is weird/out of the blue
Hey! No worries!
I am self employed and have not worked through temp agencies but I have a few friends who have gotten permanent jobs through them. I'm in Canada so things might be different where you are but I have heard good things about Adecco (they also operate in the US)
The advice about temp agencies came from this tiktok and I've found it to be broadly true.
In 2024 I think staffing/temp agencies are just incentivized to have people register and do a w2 and activate their pay card and not actually place people in jobs, or maybe it's just my industries (admin, av tech) ? But based on the broken applications and websites and sorry but piss poor responsiveness and complete lack of actual job or even day gig placements, yeah I feel like a number somehow and most people I know of who use these agencies today report being given maybe one job and never contacted again.
My current story is I was "hired" in the office, w2, got my pay card, watched training videos that were not even industry specific, got my packet of rules and contact info, was told by my interviewer that in a couple weeks I would be informed of available shifts by phone because they are not listed as openings on the website.
Cut to six months later. I get a message asking if I'm still interested, I say yes and that I can potentially be available any time with notice. This is because I have other jobs now, but I still am desperate for av tech experience because it is basically impossible to get work without having a recent and well defined work history and anyone struggling to find work knows where I'm going with this. I'm asked about a specific date next week on which I'm normally working. Quickly I ask my boss if I can be absent that day, and she says yes. I reply that I'm available.
Over the next few hours and days they ask me if I'm available on other dates with less than a week of notice, and maybe if I was informed of the shifts at the same time I could ask for them off but I'm not going to send my boss five different time off requests less than a week away so I have to turn down three of the five shifts.
The day before my first shift, I'm pretty sick and I go to the hospital. I let them know that morning what's going on and say I will not be there. I get no response until 7 pm the next day, saying that if I'm late for my next shift I will be cut.
A few days later, the day before my next shift (today) , I let them know I will be there. The rules packet says I will only be allowed to use a specific entrance into the building, so I asked which entrance that is. I got no response. I asked if I've been cut, no response. This evening, I am thinking they found someone to replace me because I had been sick. Maybe that decision was also influenced by my questions about whether it would be okay to use a necessary breathing device during the 12 hour shift, which was a limitation I didn't have six months ago when I had been "hired". I'm annoyed to have missed out on the opportunity, but I was able to take a shift for tomorrow at my other job at short notice so at least I'm still working, just working for less and not getting the experience which to be honest was a lot more important to me, not that money isn't 馃捀
Anyway it's just making me wonder how normal this is and like wonder if any of these agencies is even worth the time it takes to register or if it's just my industries being hyper competitive, or just the economy.

Hi everyone. I have had myself one hell of a December and am going to be in the red when January hits. Between first catching covid and then busting my motorcycle on some black ice, I've had to pay out for parts and repairs while also missing entirely too much work. I will have less hours in the next two weeks thanks to the holidays, and my job will be slashing overtime, so I will not be where I need to be by the new year.
I need to make rent for January at the very least. I can push other stuff around and probably make it work but rent is the most important thing. I will have 1 more paycheck between now and then, but I'm sure it won't be enough. I am asking for help to raise $325 - this is one half of what I will need. I know it's been an incredibly tough year for everyone and I am sorry to be in this position. There is absolutely no pressure to donate - I am grateful for just a reblog. I will be refreshing this post regularly so if you do not want to see it please block the tag "hyenadonations"
Me: Hi jobsite I am a disabled woman looking for a receptionist or administrative job in the medical field, preferably without much physical exertion required. Because I am disabled
Job site: Oh ho ho I have some jobs for you! Here
Me: Okay well. That first one is insurance sales. That has nothing to do with what I asked for, and i don't have the required license. And the prep cook job is impossible for me because of my mobility issues. And the last one -
Me: The fucking Salvation Army?? The ones who leave queer people like me to die in the cold because we're an affront to God!??! Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME
I suggest this to people individually regularly enough that I need to make a post about it:
If you need a job, and you hate the "finding things to apply for" part of job searching, and you feel like you've hit a dead end, do yourself a favor and look into temp agencies. Some are industry-specific, some are function-specific, and some are these-companies-need-warm-bodies-specific, but in general, they're pretty similar functionally.
There's two ways (usually) that a temp agency can get you work. One is traditional temping, where you're an employee of the temp agency and work fixed term assignments at various companies and move around from assignment to assignment. The other is temp-to-hire, where you start out like the first way, but at the end of the fixed term, the company you're doing work for decides whether or not they want to hire you. (There can also be direct hire postings, where the company just...hires you right away, facilitated by the temp agency, but that's less common than the first two.)
And the most important part here is that YOU ARE NOT THE ONE PAYING THE TEMP AGENCY FOR SERVICES. The companies looking for workers are the ones paying the temp agencies, NOT THE WORKERS. If you find a temp agency trying to charge you for finding you placements, THAT IS A SCAM AND YOU SHOULD RUN AWAY SCREAMING.
Point is: Job searching sucks. Temp agencies can make it suck less.
as someone with a Relatively Low Stress Office Job鈩笍, do you agree with doubleca5t's recent advice on how to find one and/or is there anything else you would like to add? sorry if you've posted about this topic before and i missed it
i have that video queued! i think for most people a temp agency is the way to go, the only reason i didn't is that i live in the frozen swamp woods and i couldn't find any
