Awful people should stick together <3. No, seriously lol, initially I didn't ship them, but I read one fic that made me consider them as a thing ( pillow talk by sugar_shoal). And I figured out that I enjoy their dynamic!

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Putting in a room people who have caused each other great harm and watch what will happen is my jam tbh. I like how all of them have to struggle to be together! We have jc's insecurities and grief, wwx's aversion to open vulnerability and his resentment, lwj's stubbornness and pettiness... So juicy!

Like, how do they get there? How do they reach a point of balance? How do you reconcile wwx's deflecting mannerisms, jc's snapping attitude and lwj's selective mutism? imo wangxian works so well (novel canon) because there isn't history, there aren't dead bodies or broken promises or broken comradeship. But, with jc in the mixer, we have it all! They can get on each other nerves (lwj, jc), bring the worst out of each other (jc, wwx) and enable each other worst traits (lwj, wwx). We can have interesting dynamics! They can heal each other wounds or they can cut deeper each other even more... It's so interesting!

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Mmmm. Idk even know what is unpopular here lol, but, I do think that if zhancheng happens during wwx's death, canon is different! While I emphasize with the desire of skipping the hassle of changing canon, and like, people can be into whatever, imo, to have the characters ring true to me, things have to be different!

If lwj has an affair with jc, I don't think he won't fall in love/be softer with him! If they have occasional hook up, fine, but a whole ass (sexual) relationship? He's going to catch some feelings! My interpretation of lwj's character is that, despite his cold demeanor, he's soft and squishy inside! He's prone to love! He's going to understand and emphasize with jc! Cql!lwj is already doing an half attempt at encouraging a yunmeng bros reconciliation, but a lwj who has been ball deep inside jc? Who knows that jc is cruel and snapping, but who knows that jc is much more too? Canon changes imo. (again, I fully understand people who don't want to touch canon)

(I am not talking about jc because it's obvious that he's having feelings for lwj. He's also very mad at all of them!)

(and, if they have a relationship but jc -feeling too much exposed, not used anymore at someone really watching him, doting on him- lashes out and breaks their 'arrangement'... Then yeah, lwj could be even worse than in canon imo lol)

Also, mmm, while zhancheng is mostly about wwx (and it should be like that!), lwj was very much dumped back then during the war. jc was his first real friend! They understood each other! They were a team! They were on the same page! And jc dumped him :-/

I was trying so hard to give benefit of the doubt all this time, especially with how messy 7seas seems as a business and the union stuff going on, but as this seems to be the only translation so heavily affected, I really want someone to explain. Explain to me like I’m five wtf is going on here. Explain to me what would make any of this acceptable and not ruin the reputations of the company and translation team. Cause now I’m even starting to doubt other translations by this person, which includes translations I like, and I’m not wanting to put any money into 7seas at all.

i said this in some tags a while back but it just really gets to me how much the structure of cql centers the yunmeng bro relationship in the narrative. not to the exclusion of other relationships, but it is one of the central, driving character pairs of the story. stop me if i'm being obvious but the show opens on the most antagonistic moment of their relationship and then spends a 30-episode flashback showing us them working together as a team, being affectionate & proud of each other, and supporting & valuing each other. so of course that sets up a delicious tension between what we know is to come (or what we think we know is to come) vs. the choices we see them make over and over in the first life to reaffirm their care for each other and their partnership.

this sets us up to be invested in what happens to them! imagine if episode 1 started with the cloud recesses study abroad arc and we worked up to the cliff scene after 30 episodes instead of seeing it at the beginning. though their relationship would still be compelling on its own merits, we wouldn't have as much of a reason to obsess over when the shift is going to happen. but because we saw the cliff scene first, we're sitting there for 30 episodes going, is this going to be the thing that pushes jiang cheng over the edge, oh no wow that wasn't it, okay surely this will do it, nope wrong again, god they really love each other don't they!! like it's that subversion of our expectations, over and over, that heightens our involvement in what happens to them. it's precisely because we expect jiang cheng to stop trusting and prioritizing and valuing wei wuxian that it hits us so hard every time he doesn't do that.

(i'm using "we" here to mean "the portion of the audience for which this was effective" as there are people who watched this show without caring about the yunmeng bro relationship, just go with it)

we see that same cliff scene come around a second time and this time there are subtle changes in the pacing, lighting, acting, etc. that make jiang cheng seem more conflicted, less certain. the scene would hit differently for us anyway because now we have a deeper understanding of just how broken things must be between them to get to this point, but reshooting the scene with these little changes makes it possible to reinforce those perceptions on a subliminal level. this would not have been so powerful if we had only seen the cliff scene once.

and then even once we catch up to the present and don't know what's coming next, we keep getting these tidbits reminding us that things aren't as simple as they seem with these two: the golden core hot potato of it all and how we don't actually get the last piece of information about it until the last episode, and even then, it's a secret we share with jiang cheng, and wei wuxian still doesn't know about it; wei wuxian wishing to return to lotus pier but jiang cheng not hearing him say that; all the great shots we get of jiang cheng's conflicted face at burial mounds 3.0; obviously guanyin temple and the way they're each saying the exact things the other person least needs to hear. the way that guanyin temple has so many extra layers on the rewatch! idk if this is making any sense but. the story just keeps rewarding us for caring about them!!

#the thing about the cliff scene that gets me is that there are three people: wei wuxian jiang cheng and lan wangji #technically three relationships if you count jc-lwj but in that scene they're clearly only interacting with each other incidentally #because they each have a relationship with wei wuxian #so two relationships. yunmeng bros and wangxian #wangxian is THE central relationship of the show. and it is very important in this scene! this scene is also doing interesting #things to build that relationship and our perception of it. but as i said in my original tags i am MUCH more interested in the craft of the #cliff scene vis-a-vis yunmeng bros rather than wangxian because and i quote #lan wangji is also there in the first scene and he's doing great work et cetera but there isn't as much mystery there #like yeah we get the dissonance of seeing how much he cares and then seeing him be so cold #but it's not rocket science to figure out how that shift could happen. xiao zhan is right there and none of us are immune to him either #the untamed #they're brothers. they are BROTHERS #storytelling #my posts #jiang cheng #wei wuxian #f

I’m going to be honest and say I fundamentally do not understand why the people who seem most invested in appeals to authority based on authorial intent also seem to be persistently wrong about what the various creators have to say about the characters, which is, courtesy of some very generous fan translators, easily accessible information. I personally do not care very much about authorial intent; I think it can be useful and interesting context for a given work but ultimately come down pretty hard on team art is inherently subjective and sometimes artists don’t actually pull off conveying their intended meaning. I am fairly confident that Ian Fleming and I disagree very strongly on the character of Pussy Galore and her relationship with James Bond, and also that my opinion is better than his. In terms of MDZS, MXTX says "Jiang Cheng is deeply and seriously flawed but not an evil person" and I nod along, thinking that is a thing she conveyed pretty successfully to me, but you’re never going to catch me arguing that that means no one is allowed to say he’s evil on the internet because fundamentally I don’t think that’s a useful or interesting way to approach either art or fandom.

But with CQL specifically, you have the bunny kisses and the octopus hug and Yanli pausing the momentum of the third episode to explain to the audience that Jiang Cheng has difficulty expressing concern and care directly and the moment where he looks directly into the camera while promising that he will never let another disaster befall his recently massacred people and the sad little smile when he insists to Jin Guangshan that it’s just Wei Wuxian’s character to be unrestrained and free rather than deliberate disrespect and just. I really do not feel like they were making an attempt at subtlety, but even if they were there are like a million interviews featuring Wang Zhuocheng’s opinions on the character.

What does Wang Zhuocheng think of Yunmeng Bros? I wonder! If only someone had asked him what he would like to say to Wei Wuxian oh wait-

What does he think about how Jiang Cheng communicates?

You don’t have to care about any of this but it’s so easy to look it up if it’s an aspect of the creative process you find interesting or important to your understanding of the characters!

First point: let's not call characters lunatics just because they're horrible people. JC isn't insane, he's just an entitled rich man who's never had to really work for anything a day in his life (even the Sunshot Campaign was mostly won by WWX and the other sects, and certainly not by JC personally) and thinks his wealth and status give him the right to do whatever he likes to whoever he likes. That's not the same thing.

Anyway, nice to know that apparently the donghua team got sick of making apologies for JC's shitty behaviour and were just like "Eh, forget him. Let's talk about Our Heroes".

Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 10 second part

Unclean Realm

Lan Wangji has a Louis Henry Sullivan moment on seeing the Nie family home, becoming enraptured by its overwrought monumental architecture after a lifetime of restrained good taste and single-story buildings.

He approaches the fortress with the expression of delighted wonder that he usually reserves for when he’s looking at the moon or at Wei Wuxian.

Wei Wuxian is like, yep that’s a building, all right, but he supports Lan Wangji’s kinks.  

Meng Yao tells them about the Wen Clan directive, and has what appears to be a moment of genuine, affectionate amusement at Nie Huaisang’s reaction.

Jiang Cheng kinda blames the Lans for inventing the whole “indoctrination” thing and for encouraging his brother’s disaster bi tendencies. Wei Wuxian responds by complimenting the Lan Clan, almost like someone who met his true love got some real value out of the instruction he received there.

One of the great ironies of this story is that Wei Wuxian sort of becomes a rogue Lan disciple because of his relationship with Lan Wangji. He relies on Lan temperament techniques, uses music as a primary cultivation method, has committed all of the Lan rules to his supposedly terrible memory and cites them on multiple occasions, and is an important mentor for the younger generation Lan disciples. Because Hanguang-Jun is just that good in bed.

Xue Yang in the background of this conversation is channeling OP’s church-enduring, school-enduring inner 10-year-old.

Nie Mingjue, Chifeng-Zun, appears, and couldn’t be more different than his brother. On first watching this episode, I saw him as a grumpy, sexy, very emotional leather daddy man who is quick to anger. Rewatching, I see someone who’s struggling with a growing illness...the resentful energy kind.

Nie Mingjue’s handling of resentful energy is very different from Wei Wuxian’s straightforward interest and acceptance. NMJ has a traditional cultivator’s view of it, regarding it as evil and as something to resist, while he is literally carrying it on his back. He’s like a secret alcoholic who is preaching temperence, and can’t find a way to be reconciled with himself.  

At this point of the story, Nie Mingjue is keeping it together, but is under a hell of a lot of stress, and Baxia’s blood thirst is already maybe a problem.

The Yunmeng bros think that Nie Huaisang’s fear of his brother is hilarious, because they don’t understand the situation. They think he’s just living in a hideously toxic family dynamic like theirs, when actually he’s in a loving, sorta healthy, if parentless, family that is being crushed under a generational curse.

Compliments for the Yunmeng Bros

I’m not the first meta poster to notice how happy Jiang Cheng is to be praised by Nie Mingjue.

He never gets this at home. Jiang Yanli praises him, but in that watery “you tried your best” way that doesn’t really stick.  Nie Mingjue’s praise really means something, because he is a fearsome warrior and stern authority figure. And this is a double compliment, because Nie Mingjue says he heard it from Lan Xichen, and agrees with it.

Let’s Make Terrible Decisions

Keep Xue Yang alive, says Wei Wuxian, and Meng Yao immediately agrees, although I’m pretty sure he would have proposed that even if WWX hadn’t.

So they do, not realizing that “kill him later” is never a good plan for someone who 1. super needs killing 2. has a whole lot of death-dealing skills.

Future clan leader Jiang Cheng notices how smart and talented Meng Yao is.  Xue Yang finds it hilarious when the trio praises Meng Yao, possibly because their evil team up is already underway.

Boss’ Bed Warmer Son of a Ho

The constant insults toward Meng Yao are about his mom, but there’s another level of leering implication, that Meng Yao seems to encourage in his conversation with the soon-to-be-murdered guard captain.

Nie Mingjue elevated him way above his expectations, and he is ridiculously pretty, which has to create rumors. In the Nightless City scenes when he’s fondling Baxia and telling Nie Mingjue’s family secrets there’s definitely a sense of intimacy that’s not just “loyal retainer.”

I feel like maybe this whole exchange is a bit of theater designed to show Xue Yang something without showing it to anyone else. Meng Yao didn’t need to have this conversation in front of his prisoner.

Let’s Do Exactly What We Said We Wouldn’t

Once the younger quartet are alone with Nie Mingjue, Wei Wuxian crosses the room away from his friends and practically into Lan Wangji’s pocket, if Lan Wangji had pockets.

He has no pockets and also has no personal bubble any more, when it comes to Wei Wuxian.

We could make a weapon out of Yin Iron, Wei Wuxian says, completely forgetting his entire conversation with Lan Yi, apparently. Lan Wangji doesn’t argue with this idea.

Nie Mingjue warns Wei Wuxian not to try it.

I stabbed a man in Qinghe just to watch him die

Nie Mingjue is like the Johnny Cash of the cultivation world, carrying the weight of his poor choices and trying to steer the young folk to the path of righteousness. But--like Johnny Cash--his bad choices have made him really fucking cool, so he isn’t very good at deterring anybody.

Meng Yao Didn’t Come Here to Make Friends

Immediately after Meng Yao’s fellow Nie clan people call him “son of a whore” again, Wei Wuxian meets him, is nice to him, addresses him by his military title, bows to him, asks why he’s away from the party, and thanks him for his service.

But Meng Yao has already decided to make friends with Xue Yang, so Wei Wuxian goes onto his list of people that he doesn’t give a crap about except if they can be useful to him.  Then Meng Yao goes to make out hatch a plot with Xue Yang.

I’ll Sleep On Your Roof

Meeting SongXiao seems to have done away with the last of Lan Wangji’s resistance to his connection with Wei Wuxian.

He hears a noise on the roof and, when realizing it’s Wei Wuxian, he smiles one of his tiny reserved smiles before heading outside.

When he sees Wei Wuxian drunkenly sprawled on the roof, limbs akimbo, wine on his chin and neck, mouth full of poetry about the open road, Lan Wangji gives him the most fond look imaginable.

Then he reluctantly leaves, with his signature “say goodbye, but only when he can’t hear you” thing.

They’ve both come a really long way since their first meeting. Wei Wuxian is openly and vocally attaching himself to Lan Wangji...but is not actually entering his space or asking for anything from him; he just wants to be near him, and wants to let him know that. “I’ll sleep on your roof tonight.”

And Lan Wangji just...loves him. Wei Wuxian is drunk, embarrassing, demonstrative, eager to make a hell weapon out of yin iron, touchy feely, and absurdly sexy. And Lan Wangji is pretty okay with all of that.

I Might Have Been Drunk

Wei Wuxian carefully avoids telling Jiang Cheng where he was last night.

Even if he did get blackout drunk, he would have woken up on Lan Wangji’s roof. And I don’t think he was as drunk as that. He just knows Jiang Cheng wouldn’t like the truth.

Wen Fucking Chao, Again

Wen Chao shows up to be annoying and boring.  This leads to a pretty good fight between Nie Mingjue and Wen Zhuliu. Note that when the chips are down, Nie Huaisang stands with his Gege without any cowering. Almost as if he had hidden reserves of bravery, and is not as helpless as he lets on.

Wen Zhuliu isn’t styled to be super hot, although he’s certainly compelling, and in Dance of the Phoenix he looks good with sensitive-guy hair wispies. I wonder what actor Feng Mingjing looks like out of character?

Battle Bros

When the fighting breaks out, the Yunmeng brothers are decisive and united, with Wei Wuxian giving orders to Jiang Cheng and JC following without hesitation.

I feel like if these two could have gone through a few big battles together, instead of being separated during most of the Sunshot campaign, their whole relationship would have improved. On the battlefield, they respect, trust, and understand each other.  

The Pointy End

Nie Mingjue is holding his own against Wen Zhuliu, but he gets distracted by Meng Yao hollering “Xue Yang has escaped” and then shanking the guard captain right in front of him.

Wen Zhuliu takes advantage of the distraction to aim a very slow stab at Nie Huasang, and Meng Yao jumps in front to get stabbed on his behalf.

When the Yunmeng bros show up to help NMJ, Wen Zhuliu immeiately yanks Wen Chao back behind him and points his sword at Wei Wuxian. He absolutely sees these two as a serious threat.  Considering that eventually WWX is going to kill Wen Chao while JC kills Wen Zhuliu, this concern is not misplaced.

Wei Wuxian tells Wen Chao to stop being such a jerk, and Wen Chao menaces Wei Wuxian and gloats about the burning of cloud recesses. The burning, that is, of some part of cloud recesses that doesn’t include the library, the Jingshi, the main cultivation chamber, the rabbit warren, or Lan Qiren’s house, unless the Lan Clan is really really good at rebuilding things to very exact specifications.

In a rare moment of seeing Meng Yao’s internal thoughts, he is worried about Lan Xichen when he hears about cloud recesses.

The Yelling Part

Now we have the particularly nasty breakup between Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao. It’s...got some layers. Meng Yao is cowering on the floor, but is not apologizing.

He never apologizes throughout this encounter.

孟瑤無悔  - Meng Yao (has) no regrets

This scene is amazing and excruciating to watch, even more when you know what’s ahead.

What the Fuck is Meng Yao’s Plan

On one level this is Meng Yao, manipulative sociopath, setting up a cover story for his aiding and alliance with Xue Yang.  On another, this is Meng Yao, loving subordinate, being tossed aside by his lord because he dared to stand up for himself.

He uses the same “scout’s honor” gesture we’ve seen Wei Wuxian use to swear he’s telling the truth. Wei Wuxian is always lying when he uses this gesture.

I’m...not sure exactly what Meng Yao’s plan is, with all these chess moves? By stabbing the captain in front of NHS, he created an opportunity to plant a cover story about Xue Yang’s escape. He might be hoping that Nie Mingjue will forgive him and keep him on, while Xue Yang can stay in his back pocket to be used later.

Dry eyes? Try Visene

Or he might be intending to get kicked out, given his non-apology. In any case, Nie Mingjue is weeping during this encounter, and Meng Yao...isn’t. He is signaling distress in his voice, expression, and body language, but his eyes are dry up until the last moment, and even then they just glisten a bit. In a show where every actor is an expert at crying on cue, that’s got to be a deliberate choice.

Which isn’t to say that Meng Yao is faking being full of emotion in this scene. It’s just that the emotion isn’t necessarily sorrow.

What Does Nie Mingjue’s Head Think

Flip the view and this is about Nie Mingjue being betrayed by a subordinate, who has turned out to be a self-serving murderer. And on another level it’s Nie Mingjue being betrayed by his lover, who was just using him for advancement.

I rewatched the later episode where we get the scene as Nie Mingjue’s head perceived it, and he’s particularly brokenhearted and disillusioned from his head’s POV.  In that version there is a telling addition to the conversation.

Nie Mingjue asks about the guys who were roasting Meng Yao behind his back. He asks, if I hadn’t come, would you have murdered all of them?

Um. No, dude. Of course fucking not. That’s what a patriarchal authority does. That’s the way an angry Nie Mingjue/Baxia team might solve a problem.

Meng Yao has to use subterfuge to kill his enemies. And while he super hates being called “son of a whore” it’s absolutely not enough to make him kill someone, with the risk murder brings. Likewise, being treated well isn’t enough to make him spare someone. Nie Mingjue totally doesn’t get this, because he’s been the patriarch of this clan his entire adult life.

And Here’s the Actual Problem

There is a betrayal here, but Nie Mingjue is not simply a victim.  Whether it’s a sexual relationship or a non-sexual bond of affection, there can be nothing solid in Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao’s relationship within a feudal society, because it is fundamentally unequal. Even if they love each other deeply - which I’m not convinced either of them does - every encounter they have is tainted with power dynamics.

Meng Yao has been elevated by Nie Mingjue and quite probably taken into his bed, as well as being told many family secrets, but has not been given a new surname (like, for example, Wen Zhuliu was) or independent power. More importantly, Nie Mingjue has not used his authority to remove or punish the many people who disrespect his subordinate.  Lan Qiren would have had all of those gossipy fuckers kneeling in the snow, and Wen Ruohan would feed them to his mosh pit zombies.

Meng Yao is a murderous little snake, but he is right to be angry with Nie Mingjue about some things, and his pursuit of his own agenda is understandable.

Well, That Was a Slice

Meng Yao leaves, hurt, with a dignified bow; just as he did that one time when his dad kicked him down the Carp Tower steps.

Take note, both patriarchal authorities: that is his way of saying “I’m going to murder you one day.”

Nie Mingjue sits with his broken heart, as we realize that we’ve only spent 20 minutes with this guy and we’ve gone on an entire emotional journey with him. This episode packed in a LOT.

Also, there's this one fanfic that i've read before but can't remember the title, i also only remember some parts (mainly the ending) of it. It turns out that jiang fengmian cannot reproduce, all along jiang cheng and jiang yanli was jin juangshan's children and yu ziyuan was his concubine. Jiang yanli and jiang cheng became the jin's servants, i also think yunmeng jiang became yunmeng wei, if im not mistaken. Just read Intriguing by @robininthelabyrinth (an absolutely stunning fic), which inspired this crackfic idea

JGS asks JGY to kill NMJ. By this time, JGY is coming to realise that his dad only values him as a servant and honestly he's tired of being abused by the Jins. And he also maybe doesnt hate NMJ and maaaybe thinks fondly of the times when he was in Qinghe. Also he wants to take JGS down. SO he interprets this as 'stop nmj from being interested in politics and get him off my back'.

And the 'plan' he comes up with is this - get NMJ a spouse so he's too busy fucking to look too deeply into whatever JGS is doing. Maybe he teams up with NHS? Idk im a slut for these scheming murder homies

The person they choose must have the following qualities - loyal, suspicious of the Jin sect and JGS, angry enough to want revenge for his beloved NMJ, powerful enough (physically and politically) to get said revenge, among other qualities deemed unnecessary by JGY but essential according to NHS (they must be hot af, must love his da-ge, must be strong enough to duel da-ge, fun to hang out with, easy to manipulate into doing his paperwork for him)

Enter Jiang Cheng.

Let's assume WWX is still alive and in the Burial Mounds with the Wens (i dont actually know the exact timeline, on account of not watching the whole show, so work with me here).

JC is loyal, does not trust the jins except for jzx but that too only barely, ANGRY, physically powerful, AND he fits NHS'S criteria too!

The Jiang sect is pretty weak rn but that works out too! Bc JC needs to strengthen ties with other sects so that he can get help in rebuilding Lotus Pier and also the defend WWX so this marriage would be beneficial for him too!

The whole fic is just NHS and JGY trying to discreetly matchmake NMJ and JC. JGY brings in JYL to help

Along the way NHS and JYL figure out that their good friend JGY has the hots for LXC, and that LWJ and WWX are pining for each other and behold! A side quest!!

And so the story ends with JGS's crimes exposed, JGs himself being disposed off (idc how it happens, maybe madam jin gets to kill him), the boys getting together, the Wens and WWX being pardoned, JYL and JZX dont have to die, maybe LXC and JGY adopt Lan Jingyi idk go wild

Seeing Lan Zhan For The First Time

Ever since I saw the fanmade romcom trailer of the show, I can’t get the image of bridegroom Lan Wangji out of my head. His entry is so elegant and his presence throughout the show truly ethereal. (Wei Ying, you’re not even trying to hide those heart eyes. We get it! You’re impressed.)

Lan Zhan’s Character Growth

We only remember Lan Zhan as the guy who reserved all his emotions and smiles for Wei Ying, so rewatching the rigid, inflexible person he used to be kind of drives me crazy. Lan Zhan before he met Wei Ying started his journey as a lone, icy, untouchable snow-capped peak and by letting himself love and be loved by Wei Ying in return, the person he becomes in the end is like a warm, summery mountain shining with life and no trace of the glaciers that thawed over. His character evolution is no joke and it is only because Wei Ying’s companionship makes him more human and allows him to be the best version of himself. Lan Zhan’s arc is one of the best things in the show and the most rewarding reason to watch it.

Did I Just Meet The LOML

Lan Zhan taking note of his future soulmate showing off his intelligence right from the start. But shhh, he’s too much of a tsundere to admit that right now.

But Lan Zhan, What About The 9pm Curfew? 

Notice how Lan Zhan is up late at night waiting for Wei Ying, like a Good Obedient Boy from the Lan clan ready to catch a lawbreaker red-handed. Are we sure he has not simply mistaken his positive feelings for annoyance and found a way to spend more time with Wei Ying?

Wei Ying, my bro, I think you might be the moon in this case.

Flirting With The Law Enforcer? That’s One More Violation! 

It’s cute to watch their dynamics in the beginning, Wei Ying is already so familiar with Lan Zhan, tries to share his drink with him, teases him for the first of many times. And Lan Zhan just looks like “?????? Are you flirting with the law enforcer?! That is yet another violation of the Lan clan rules!”

Wei Ying coquettishly pushes Lan Zhan's sword into its sheath and the chase that comes next is the beginning of something monumental and exciting. 

(I understand preserving the original meaning is difficult in English translation but they really had Wei Ying call Lan Zhan inflexible only to follow it up with a beautifully choreographed fight sequence? Really?)

Wangxian’s First Meeting Is Romantic Cinematography At Its Finest

This scene right here is in my opinion, the most romantic scene to ever exist in all of fiction. If anyone tries to argue that Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are best bros, show them this scene. There is no hetero explanation for why it is so romantically shot. We have seen it countless times in fairytales. This is unmistakably the meeting of two people destined to be in love forever. It stole my breath the first time I saw it, and has done every time since. Like legit, it needs to be on top of those lists that boast the most iconic meetings in romantic history and taught in academic institutions worldwide.

First of all, a moonlit first meeting is enough to immortalize a story in our memory as being inherently romantic. But Wangxian are so effortlessly and picturesquely sword fighting (or should I say dancing?) on the rooftops, hair and clothes gently swaying to the tune of WuJi and thanks to the slow-motion closeups that make them glow like a live painting under the moonlight. 

(And surely I was not the only one who heard this random bell ringing at night and got reminded of wedding bells or the film ‘Your Name’? Lol!)  

We see that neither of them has the upper hand in the fight. This is important because it establishes they were born to be each other’s equals on the battlefield, something Zewu Jun points out later. (Just one of the many soulmate things Wangxian share.) I have no doubt Lan Zhan is freaking out wondering, who the fuck is this guy? How can he match my every strike and step without even uncapping his sword? 

In these above shots, there is a beautiful, unmissable symmetry in the way they are framed that drives it home that they are two halves of the same whole; their paths will be bound together, their perspectives will come to reflect each other. They are one and the same. The way they fight is also kind of intimate and very poetic. The super romantic backdrop and their placement shows that they are in perfect tandem and their chemistry is loud and luminous from the first time they meet. 

There is nothing straight about this scene. Not even the shot angle. Look! 

There is also something quite god-like and celestial about their meeting, like we are witnessing two prophesied immortal beings whose encounter is going to change the fate of the universe. And does it not, indeed?

I think I heard the moon longingly sigh in this scene because she felt so single. Honestly, understandable. It’s so maddening how two soulmates meeting for the first time can turn out to be this iconic, beautiful, brilliant, breathtaking and every other word you can think of. (We’re lucky Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan are used to dancing, the fight sequences are all so graceful. *chef’s kiss*)

I feel like this one scene reduced every straight romance I’ve ever seen to ashes. I’m honestly curious, can anyone outdo this in the future, gay or not? It has become The Standard for first meetings. I envy the talented, creative minds that envisioned and executed it.

TL;DR : The whole scene is drenched with a romantic field of vision meant specifically for the audience to swoon over.

“Lan Zhan!”

Wei Ying drops one of his two precious pots of Emperor’s Smile because Lan Zhan attacked them. Most people would just be mad in this situation but it's the first time Wei Ying calls him "Lan Zhan”. I wonder what led Wei Ying to have such an informality with Lan Zhan, who didn't consider him his friend until much later. It could be that it’s just who they are, two people with opposite personalities. But we don't see Wei Ying exhibit this closeness with strangers and yet he's whining Lan Zhan's name in that classic style of his, right from the first night they meet. Adorable! (Lan Zhan who owes him two bottles of Emperor’s Smile for breaking them spends the rest of his life buying them for Wei Ying.. In case you needed a reason to cry.)

Breaking The Rules & Breaking The Barriers To Lan Zhan’s Heart

Wei Ying actively criticizes the Lan clan’s rules and finds their teaching unreasonable. He thinks drinking Emperor’s Smile when he’s sitting on the roof technically doesn’t count as being “inside” the Cloud Recesses where alcohol is banned. A small detail but it shows Wei Ying’s gift of seeing through the grey areas in morality. It is a trait that ultimately influences Lan Zhan to shed the hard and fast ideas of orthodoxy he was raised on and share Wei Ying’s quest for justice. This makes both of them the only people inside the world of The Untamed who are able to see the deep-seated problems in the existing system and question them. Their love story is inextricably tied with rewriting the laws of their world and if that does not make The Untamed the most revolutionary romance to ever exist, I don’t know what does. 

Lan Zhan Really Just Cares A Lot

Turns out Lan Zhan didn’t let the Yunmeng Jiang clan stay out in the dark after all. Love how he’s Gay Gripping his sword in panic and backing away from Wei Ying because he doesn't want him to know he's a good person whose heart is in the right place. You know, because that's a horrible reputation for his tsundere persona to have. Zewu Jun takes one for the team and blows his cover, which becomes a common occurrence in the show. Wei Ying is also quick to apologize to him like, “I had a good feeling about you!” when we’ve seen he rarely does that with disciples from other clans. 

President In Action

The conversation between Lan Zhan and Zewu Jun needs no analysis and the latter’s triumphant smirk in the end when Lan Zhan walks off is all the evidence you need that He Knows What’s Up. I love how Zewu Jun probably sits around like, "I have to personally do something or my dumbass brother is going to spend his whole life alone, when he's clearly met his soulmate and is too blind to admit it." Thank you, President of the Wangxian club. We do not deserve you.

What Did Wei Ying Mean?

Wei Ying says all the female suitors from all the clans admire Lan Zhan without knowing how cold and rigid he really is, and he doesn’t complete his sentence because Lan Zhan uses the silencing charm on him. What did he mean by this? What were you going to do, Wei Ying?! 

Episode 3 gives us insight into the inception of their romance and we see every moment since the beginning has been tailor-made to tell the audience this is going to be a love story set against fantasy-driven, action-packed odds in ancient China.

i'm going through your yunmeng bros tag (which is, may i say, IMPECCABLE) and it's amazing because i just recently read a fic that got me thinking about how much i love the platonic version of mutual pining (ESPECIALLY SIBLINGS) and that flavour of yunmeng bros is just.... *chef's kiss*. and you, YOU GET IT

YOU AND ME, WE GET IT!!!

like come ON, watch them gaze at each other across the courtyard and tell me it doesn't scream "mutual pining" to you! i just want more of this at every opportunity (including a version where they both know that the other one wants to be family but they're holding back for Reasons)!

i know you only mentioned mutual pining, but now you've got me thinking about how i want fraternal versions of every single romance trope for these guys. consider:

forced reveals

nonconsensual honesty is always great for any sort of mutual pining situation, especially one so rife with miscommunication, but it hits extra hard for these two because of the reciprocity yet unevenness of the whole canon golden-core-swapping thing, in which they both made a similar sacrifice but only one of those sacrifices is still a secret. but it doesn't even have to be about that particular secret, because they're also both too insecure to recognize how important they are to the other person, so there's lots of room for a more standard reveal of that nature. some examples:

animal transformation: have one of them transform into an animal unbeknownst to the other so we can get that classic "oh no he's missing and i'm worried about him, i guess i'll tell this random small cuddly animal my deepest darkest secrets about how much i love and care about my missing brother" shtick going.

hanahaki: speaks for itself. i am not the only person thinking about fraternal hanahaki.

in vino veritas: the great thing about this one is always 1) plausible deniability on the part of either the person who reveals something or the one to whom it is revealed (e.g., jiang cheng getting drunk and crying to wei wuxian about how much he wants him to come home, and wei wuxian telling himself he probably didn't mean it or thought he was someone else), and 2) the possibility of either the revealer or the revealee forgetting all about it in the morning. this is especially juicy for these two in particular because wei wuxian's alcohol tolerance may have changed in the second life without either of them being aware of it. so imagine jiang cheng pouring his heart out and expecting wei wuxian to remember in the morning because he didn't drink THAT much, and then the next day wei wuxian acts like nothing has changed. yowch!!

honesty curse: i'm obsessed with wangxian honesty curse fics but where are the yunmeng bro honesty curse fics?? jiang cheng in particular has a HUGE SECRET he doesn't want wei wuxian to know!

contrived schemes

also known as "excuses for them to work as a team, which is good because that's secretly all they want to do," to which you can add "but they both think the other one is doing it for purely practical reasons and that makes them sad" if you want some angst. very versatile category which includes:

arranged fratrimony: they have to become sworn brothers, for ~Politics~

(arranged fratrimony + jealousy: this isn't really about them working together, but i would be remiss if i didn't mention this arranged fratrimony variation.)

fake hating: the mock duel in canon!

fake relationship escalation: they keep one-upping each other in their fake relationship, but instead of getting engaged, it's jiang cheng making wei wuxian his heir :D

heirage of convenience: i just came up with this pun. please clap. and please see here for more on the heirage of convenience concept.

undercover as brothers: imbo (in my biased opinion) this is the best way for undercover brothers to happen.

rescue

a mainstay for obvious reasons. bonus points if they're each trying to rescue the other one at the same time and getting in each other's way, or they've gotten kidnapped together and they're each trying to persuade the kidnapper to let the other one go. for best results, combine with:

emergency contact: maybe wei wuxian gets injured on a night hunt and the villagers search him for flares to call for help and the only ones he's carrying are yunmeng jiang flares (probably jin ling gave them to him). maybe jiang cheng has set up the wards around lotus pier to specifically notify wei wuxian if anything happens to them. (there's also the possibility that wei wuxian's old core can still communicate with him somehow, maybe through suibian, but that's not really equivalent to the emergency contact trope because it's not a manifestation of jiang cheng's trust in wei wuxian (kind of the opposite, lol). it's still very good though.)

protectiveness: jiang cheng protecting wei wuxian from dogs, obviously, but also remember at the second siege of the burial mounds when jiang cheng loses his spiritual energy and wei wuxian is immediately standing in front of him blocking a sword from hitting him? yeah. more of that please.

hurt/comfort

the great thing about hurt/comfort for these guys is that whenever wei wuxian gets hurt, jiang cheng can always feel indirectly responsible for it because he's the reason wei wuxian is no longer indestructible. add in some wound-tending for that special vulnerability/intimacy touch and the "gruff scary man has a soft side" element. or, you know, think about how not wanting jiang cheng to be hurt was the motivation behind one of wei wuxian's most drastic decisions. or try:

amnesia: one of them gets in an accident and wakes up thinking it's pre-sunshot times when everything was hunky dory. the other one goes along with it but it's just tearing them up the whole time because obviously it's all going to end when they get their memory back. bonus points if the one who retains their memories feels responsible for the accident in some way.

bodyswap: i'm putting this in this category solely for the golden core drama. jiang cheng losing a core again and panicking about it, then remembering this is how wei wuxian feels all the time and hating himself. getting up close and personal with the actual capabilities and limits of his brother's body without any of wei wuxian's smokescreens obscuring everything, and then using this opportunity to take care of wei wuxian's body as long as he has it - healing and pampering and training and just generally being tender in a way he can't allow himself to be directly to wei wuxian because of his fear of rejection. plus wei wuxian's strategy of "just don't think about it (tm)" not working very well when he can feel his old core spinning away inside him again.

sickfic: yes i've seen a million yunmeng bro sickfics and yes i still want more. what about it.

waking up in the hospital: this exact thing but yunmeng bros. it's so them, i assume i don't even have to explain it.

physical intimacy

bed sharing: i've already given this some thought and here's how i think there was only one bed would go down. please also see here for the lead-up to them both sleeping on the floor.

cuddle for warmth: a great way for jiang cheng to feel guilty (because wei wuxian never used to get cold) and for wei wuxian to assume he's only doing it because he feels guilty, all wrapped up in the confusing nostalgia of being close in a way that was once unremarkable to them and is now fraught with obligation and perceived rejection.

hair brushing: idk man, they run into each other on a nighthunt, wei wuxian gets guts in his hair, jiang cheng drags him back to an inn to wash them out and then he braids his hair the way yanli did when they were kids or something.

hug pollen: wei wuxian will literally die unless he gets a hug, but he wouldn't want to force that on someone who hates him. meanwhile jiang cheng would love an excuse to hug his brother without having to be emotionally vulnerable first. eventually he finds out what's going on and is super hurt that wei wuxian would rather die than hug him :((

Do It For Them (the nephews)

baby trapping: i hate baby trapping in a romantic context, but in the yunmeng bro context suddenly i'm all about it.

fake dating but brothers: this isn't exactly "pretend to be brothers even though you're not" but more "pretend to be brothers who get along," probably because jin ling's therapist took his two remaining uncles aside like "listen. it would be really good for him if you guys could model a healthy, loving familial relationship," and they were like, "so, put on a happy face and pretend we're normal brothers with no baggage. got it."

kidfic: literally just one of them getting a kid and the other one being the kid's uncle. i've seen so many takes on this already but i can never get enough.

uncle trapping: jin ling and sizhui go to summer camp together and discover they're cousins. the swapping doesn't actually happen because they don't look anything alike, but at least they get jiang cheng and wei wuxian to run into each other in the parking lot.

never moved on

jiang cheng never getting dogs and preserving wei wuxian's old room is like a widower always sleeping on the same side of the bed and keeping their spouse's clothes hanging up in the closet and jiang cheng disbanding the first disciple position so he doesn't have to give someone else wei wuxian's title is like a widower never getting remarried and wei wuxian finding out that he's still listed as a member of yunmeng jiang is like in sweet home alabama when reese witherspoon finds out her ex-husband never filed the divorce papers!!

as you can see the possibilities are endless! the sky is the limit, the world is our oyster, and we are manifesting fraternal tropes out the wazoo tonight. thank you for joining me in this journey.
