something I just noticed is in the original TCG sets for Team Aqua and Team Magma, Team Magma has non-Hoenn Pokemon (Houndour, Rhydon), while Team Aqua has only Hoenn Pokemon
which makes sense since Magma's goals are human advancement and would be more likely to use imported Pokemon while Aqua's goals are nature conservation so would probably only use native Pokemon

Man do you ever just think about how.... hardenshipping was ALWAYS going to be the natural conclusion of the game from the moment they sat down and decided that the gimmick of the region was going to have two warring teams.
Like hardenshipping has some sort of pre-baked, innate canonicity with the way that Pokemon games always resolve themselves. Especially as it pertains to the way the Hoenn region was designed.
What I mean by this is,
In Pokemon, the lesson is always "working together makes us stronger." It is always about the power of friendship, it is always about found families, it is always about settling differences with love etc etc etc. Except. This is on STEROIDS in the Hoenn region because this is a theme and a message that was deliberately sought out when they designed the game.
The Hoenn region is a region of duality. It is all about opposites and counterbalance. The names of the cities are mostly two words put together as opposed to color names in the past. Team Aqua and Team Magma. Groudon and Kyogre. Plusle and Minun. Latios and Latias. Solrock and Lunatone. Zangoose and Seviper. Volbeat and Illumise. How Wurmple can evolve into either Silcoon or Cascoon. How Clamperl can evolve into either Huntail or Gorebyss, making both of those sets of Pokemon counterparts to one another.
The REGION itself is split almost evenly in physical makeup between land and water. Which is what made it seem like there was a shit ton of water because there was. There has never been as much water in a Pokemon game as there was in Hoenn, and it was because they were physically trying to balance the water and the land. There's a giant uninhabitable volcano in the center of the region perfectly counterbalanced on the map by a giant, habitable crater in the center of the ocean. Complements and counterparts color the entire region, often quite literally in red and blue. Like almost anywhere you look in Hoenn, it is ideologically (and sometimes physically) symmetrical in design.
The name of the region comes from love and relationships, for god's sake.
And so then you have the Hoenn region, named after a word that literally means love and relationships, being themed around this very concept, in a game series that ALREADY focuses on those things. As like. The core component of the franchise.
So the Hoenn region has "the power of love and friendship" on fucking STEROIDS.
And they DOUBLE and TRIPLE down on this metaphor that they already did not need to double and triple down on in the remakes with the inclusion of the "Hoenn Rangers Coexistence Force," whose sole existence seems only to be to call out Archie and Maxie specifically, as they are about promoting the peaceful coexistence of people, nature, and pokemon. Blatant passive-aggressive reference to Archie and Maxie, who are locked in some sort of odd, eco-ideological warfare with each other playing out over the large-scale arena of the entire fucking region.
And the fact that they canon used to be on a team together and clearly split due to their differences (you know. Like how a lot of these region's Pokemon have split evolutions and counterparts etc etc etc).
The Hoenn region is rife with all this fucking duality.
And so, naturally, the Pokemon plot does what Pokemon plots do, and uses like a 12 year old child to tell our bad guys that the power of love and friendship is actually all they need.
And for the most part, in most games, that would be where it would end. The villain and the evil team fades off into obscurity, after they learned their lesson.
Except, Archie and Maxie don't have that option. Because they have each other.
Team Rocket, while still technically present, disappears from the game after you beat them. Cyrus disappears. Ghetsis disappears. Colress just fucking hangs out with you, kind of. Lysander disappears. Lusamine disappears. I don't fucking know what Rose does but god in hell I'm sure he doesn't contribute anything meaningful. Turo and Sada go off to a different fucking reality altogether.
All of the other villains disappear because they have learned their lesson. What are they going to do? Be besties with the player in the post game? Colress is the only one who gets remotely close to this, and he's locked on a little ship in one area once you beat the game. These individual leaders rightfully learn their lesson, rightfully go off on their own to reflect and grow or go to prison or die, and we just assume that because we beat them, that's the end. There is nothing more for them to resolve, because they have resolved their conflict with us.
But not Archie and Maxie. Because Archie and Maxie's main point of conflict was not with you. It was with each other.
ALL of the other villains have NO ONE to amend with once you finish the main line story of the game, because they have already ended the conflict with you. Therefore, in all other iterations of them that exist (for example, in Masters) they can just be "Ho ho ho I am GenericEvilTeamLeader" who did a bad thing.
But not Archie and Maxie. Because Archie and Maxie were depicted having their main conflict with each other, and not you, any piece of media that wishes to depict them post-events of their games (aka, post their lessons-learned) MUST depict them together. In order to demonstrate that they have taken this lesson about the "true power of friendship" to heart, we must see them putting that into practice.
And due to the nature of Hoenn being about coexistence, natural complements, and duality, Archie and Maxie must then conclude to work together and harmonize with one another just as their opposing elements do, just as the entire rest of their fucking region does. They are the living embodiments of the inner conflict, the duality and complement and turmoil and harmony that the entire region of Hoenn was built upon.
And THIS is why, to this day, in the year of our good Groudon 2023, we are STILL getting new content of them being so close to one another. Why Pokemon Masters has just basically become Hardenshipping Truthers DLC. Because now, in order to demonstrate that Archie and Maxie have taken some semblance of their lesson to heart, they must be depicted working together. As they were always created to do.
Archie and Maxie were created to be at war with one another, but this was because they were also created to learn the lesson that they must work with one another, because that is the lesson of Hoenn, and that is the lesson of Pokemon as a whole.
So from the very moment the devs sat down and said "we are going to make two warring teams," Archie and Maxie's destinies were invariably linked together, and basically hardenshipping content was always going to be the natural conclusion of that.
They really invented gay people with this one. I just..,,
*slaps Hoenn region* this bad boy can fit so much fucking symbolism in it

Lots of progress in the Nuzlocke!
First, a new friend!
Tumblr media
SO happy to introduce Gamble!
Next, we trained for a bit and met Lanette, the creator of Hoenn’s Pokemon storage system.
Tumblr media
Critical Hits can be very scary.
In Meteor Falls, we met Rodney, who may be on the team for the upcoming Gym.
Tumblr media
And then Maxie introduced himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Professor Cosmo confirmed to be safe, we trained for a bit longer, and explored the other side of the Falls a bit. We can’t reach the entire route without jumping a one-way cliff and ending up all the way back at Rustboro, so for now I’m holding off on that. There were a few trainers that could still be fought, however. One of the trainers surprised me with a Zangoose.
Tumblr media
Um. Please don’t do that.
Tumblr media
No, please either stop doing that or use only that move for the entire fight, one or the other.
AAAAA-
Tumblr media
... Oh.
So with Tina once again the MVP, we were able to train a bit more on the way back to Mt Chimney. And got a pleasant surprise!
Tumblr media
Whoo!
The teams are blocking the shortest route to Lavaridge, and we need to go collect that Meteorite for Professor Cosmo anyway and save the volcano. So we get the scenic view!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Team Aqua and Team Magma are having a bit of a fight. Now, if you pressed me hard to pick a preferred team I’d say maybe Aqua, but honestly Magma has a bit of my love too. And I didn’t remember/realize how clearly in the wrong Aqua seems to be. Magma is winning me over a bit by pointing out that what Aqua is doing is basically environmental terrorism. However, Magma’s solution to stop them by summoning a Pokemon of land in a region mostly filled with water isn’t a perfect-
Uh, Maxie? Is your Poochyena ok over there?
https://imgur.com/a/FxUMnjB
It’s moving very fast to defend against three Pokemon at once, I guess.
Next time: We make our way up the mountain!

Hoenn + Duality
like i mentioned in the notes of the hoenn + time post i made a few days ago, duality is also a recurring theme within rse/oras: red/blue, land/sea, technology/nature, alpha/omega and so on.
hoenn is the only region to have two evil teams instead of one (or one evil team and one “evil” team a la sumo/swsh)
so. many. pokemon that come in pairs. not just kyogre/groudon, no, plusle/minun, latias/latios, solrock/lunatone, zangoose/seviper, lotad evolution family/seedot evolution family, volbeat/illumise, mawile/sableye, the list could probably go on
SPEAKING of plusle/minun and latias/latios, like the two evil teams/two box legendaries they both have a red/blue colour scheme. red and blue are frequently used in juxtaposition with each other in the games (deoxys has both red and blue in its design which is interesting)
latias (red) and latios (blue) have almost identical looking mega forms, both are purple, the combination (and coexistence) of red and blue
alpha and omega are the first and last letters of the greek alphabet. theyre in direct opposition with each other at these places, the beginning and the end. archie and maxie think that their opposing goals will lead to a new beginning for humanity/pokemon, but in reality all they will do is lead to the end for both. (their two goals also remind me of two apocalypses mentioned in the bible...i also really wanna talk abt hoenn and religious/mythological allusions one day but i’m saving that for later)
funnily enough, the personalities of each team leader stand in direct opposition to their associated colours. maxie is cold, calculating and logical, but associated with the warm colour red. archie is hot-headed, passionate and emotional, but associated with the cool colour blue. maxie isn’t a roaring fire or an exploding volcano, he’s magma simmering and seething in a chamber beneath the earth’s crust, biding his time. archie isn’t a still lake or a calm ocean, he’s a tsunami, a roaring tidal wave, sweeping up everything in his path with him.
rse were the first games to introduce double battles, going as far as to even have a gym with that as its gimmick (tate + liza, also the first gym with two gym leaders)
nature and technology are frequently put at odds with each other, but for the best outcome they need to be balanced. a good example of this is route 110, which features the cycling road above the tall grass so as not to disturb the habitats of wild pokemon there
geographically the hoenn region is almost 1/2 land and 1/2 water...hmmm
sea mauville was a research facility designed to extract the ocean’s natural resources (technology) but after its closure the structure was maintained as a natural preserve (nature) (sea mauville and its business practices were pretty screwed up to say the least, but i’ll go into more detail on that at another time)
hoenn has some of the highest geographical points you can go to in the games (mt. chimney, mt. pyre, and in oras even soaring in the sky and going to space in the delta episode) and the lowest geographical points in the games (seafloor cavern, cave of origin, going underwater with dive)
rse were the first games to feature two rival-like characters instead of one (brendan/may depending on which character you play as and wally)
rse were also the first games where the player had two parents present
rse also broke the former trend of naming cities and towns after colours or plants whose names are also colours (violet, cerulean, goldenrod, celadon, etc.) and opted instead to give its towns and cities names that were two words put together (lily + cove, little + root, moss + deep, slate + port, etc)
almost all of these names feature something that is found in nature combined with words that commonly end the names of towns/suburbs/human living areas (whoops there’s that nature/technology duality again)
adding on to that, Junichi Masuda has stated that hoenn’s name comes from 豊縁 (hōen), or abundant relations, two kanji put together, two words put together, one of them even symbolizing connections. connections with nature. connections with pokemon. connections with each other.
however, duality isn’t always a good thing. sometimes it’s not coexistence. sometimes it’s opposition, two powerful but unstable forces violently crashing into each other from opposite ends and creating an imbalance (see: groudon and kyogre, archie and maxie, zangoose and seviper on a smaller and more trivial scale). this is where a third comes in, turning the two into three and uniting them. the triangle is widely seen as one of the most stable shapes in construction, and it also lends its shape to a certain other greek letter prominent in the hoenn games...but yeah let’s save that for another time i already write too much when it comes to these and i feel like its important to at least try to space my essays out a bit. i dont wanna flood you all with too much hoenn meta (see what i did there? flood? not funny didnt laugh.)

Pokemon Card of the Day #2034: Team Magma’s Groudon-EX (Double Crisis)
Tumblr media
With Team Aqua’s Kyogre-EX being a thing, having a Team Magma’s Groudon-EX only made sense. Groudon was also the one, in the original themed set, to have the most success. There were, again, fewer choices in this format and it was a lot harder to set up. This was a problem, but Groudon had something Kyogre didn’t. Groudon actually had some of its old forms of support returning in this same set, giving it a bit more of a chance.
190 HP was rather bulky, and it was important to have bulk as a Pokemon-EX that also needed a lot of things around it to work out. The Grass Weakness, as usual, was an issue against the reasonably common Vespiquen and later Golisopod-GX, giving it a couple of rather nasty match-up problems. The Retreat Cost was just atrocious. You never wanted to give up 4 Energy even if Team Magma’s Camerupt could help get it back. Get out your Float Stones for this one.
Power Saver was still awful on Team Magma’s Groudon-EX, as it couldn’t attack if there were 4 or fewer Team Magma Pokemon in play. Claydol, Camerupt, and Zangoose were definitely a better core than what Team Aqua had, though it was still hard to fit anything that wasn’t Team Magma into the deck and therefore some typical consistency Pokemon for other decks were left out here.
Magma Quake was weak when not boosted, as 80 damage for 3 Fighting and a Colorless Energy wouldn’t cut it. Thankfully, if the opponent’s Active Pokemon had any damage counters on it at all, the attack did 80 more damage. You’d take out almost anything in 2 hits, and Team Magma’s Secret Base could help get damage into play while the opponent tried to set up (if the Stadium wasn’t countered with one of their own, of course.) Getting 4 Energy wasn’t as bad here since Team Magma’s Camerupt could fetch some and Team Magma’s Claydol could move Energy over to Groudon, but it was still a bit of work to get it all in play.
Magma was the better of the two teams to build a deck around, as the support Team Magma’s Groudon-EX had was just better. It still wasn’t a top choice by any means, as there were truly spectacular decks out there and many of those were much easier to set up. It was, however, good enough to hold its own some of the time, making it a lower-end option for casual settings. It wasn’t nearly as good as the original Magma deck from 2004 by any means, so if wanting to see Magma with a lot of success it’s probably best to try out the formats from that era instead.

Team Aqua Admin Birch
i uhh have nothing to say except that he’s swiping them devon parts again
he’s kinda the opposite of his magma counterpart wherein instead of being the outdoorsy one, he’s the one who usually stays behind and does the lab works and such. he occasionally does go out to record info on water type pokemon. despite not being as ‘out there’ as the other admins, his hobbies include fishing and surfing. also the grunts call him “boardshorts birch” (Matt started it)
he uses Mega Swampert, Octillery (Elm traded to him for a Zangoose), and Sharpedo

I’m the world’s worst as predicting things or having my hopes come true, but that’s not gonna stop me from weighing in on tomorrow’s Pokemon Direct!
We are, obviously, going to see some new Gen 8 Pokemon. That’s a given. I personally hope we don’t see the evolved forms of the starters, as I like evolutions to be a surprise when I play the games... buuuut, I’m pretty sure it will be impossible for me to use the internet for the next five months without it being spoiled for me, so whatever.
As always, I want... no, I NEED more butterfly and moth Pokemon, and some cute Grass-types. Where my hummingbirds, dolphins, and capybaras at? Evolutions of existing Pokemon please? I’m actually legitimately expecting not one, but TWO new Eeveelutions tomorrow. Ground and Ghost baby, c’mon let’s see ‘em! I also expect there to be some new fairly humanoid Fairy-types, since it’s based on the UK... and by that same token, some kind of big green wyvern. Make it happen, Game Freak!
I legitimately don’t know whether Galar forms will be a thing. I think Alolan forms were an elegant solution to shining a spotlight on older Pokemon, and have with every new game been mad that we’re not getting new Shellos and Gastrodon forms... so yeah, I’m all for it. Gimme a Galarian Zangoose that looks like a badger, a highland Miltank, a Stantler with a face that’s anything but Stantler’s current face. I feel like, if they did a version of variant forms, it wouldn’t be quite how Alolan forms worked... but I would be completely happy if it was.
I’m most curious about this game’s evil team. Aside from Team Magma’s cute costumes, I haven’t really cared for any of the non-Team Rocket bad guys... right up until Team Skull, who were by far my favorite thing about Sun/Moon. The new team could be pretty much anything... if you want to go by British stereotypes, maybe football hooligans or Oliver Twist-style street urchins. Maybe an aristocratic secret society that hunts Pokemon for sport, complete with Slowpoke heads mounted as trophies all over their hideout. An ancient order of knights? The logos for the game also makes it feel like there could be two teams again.
I’m pretty sure we’ll be given a more in-depth look at the stadiums that seem to be replacing the gyms. I expect it to culminate in a Pokemon battle with some kind of leader... but what will lead up to that? Probably not sports-based minigames, probably not just plain battles against other trainers... so what else fits? The soccer uniform your character wears in the stadiums, the stadiums themselves, and the Japanese logos for the games all bear this swirly, spiky red and blue pokeball symbol:
Tumblr media
What does it mean? Well... the same spot in the logos for the last two generations bore the symbols for mega evolution and Z crystals, so it’s probably a pretty big deal. As I said back before the Gen 8 reveal in February, the term Alter Genesis had been trademarked in Japan, which I predicted would be either the name of a TCG set or some new gameplay mechanic. As it turns out... yeah, it’s a TCG set. If that symbol is related to the stadium gameplay, then we might not be getting a new let’s put something on kids’ wrists that isn’t a Yokai Watch gameplay gimmick... which is perfectly fine by me.
It kinda reminds me of rotation battles, with the three things swirling inside of it. Maybe the stadiums will feature battles using entire teams of Pokemon? What’s interesting is that they’re swirling freely between the red and blue portions... which in my mind, symbolizes two different teams. Maybe the mechanic will involve the Pokemon you send out switching sides throughout the battle? That would actually be pretty cool... It would prevent either side from being overpowered, since sometimes you would have to use your opponent’s Pokemon while they use yours. The battle would have to be based on points rather than knocking out the other team though, and that’s dangerously close to contest territory for my taste.
It’s also possible that it’s a traditional battle with all the Pokemon involved shuffled between the participants... but that feels like it would really undermine the premise of the series, and isn’t a very interesting gimmick. What could it be, then? For all I know it’s a big game of battle chess and the meaning behind the symbol only makes sense once you’ve seen it in action. Maybe it’s like a canine agility course and the symbol depicts the trainers calling out to their Pokemon with instructions?? Yeah I have no idea what it could be.
They also recently filed a trademark for the term Pokegenic... it’s entirely possible that it related to the new Pokemon apps and games introduced at that event last week and unrelated to the main series. I’m only mentioning it because Pokegenic sounds like photogenic, and could be a photography-centric replacement for the “bonding with your Pokemon” modes that have been in the last two games... though whatever it is, that’s an absolutely terrible name for it. Right up there with Gen 4′s Poketch. People got all excited when Armored Mewtwo was trademarked, since the games are called Sword and Shield, before realizing that it was in relation to the upcoming CG Pokemon movie.
Which brings me to my final point: why Sword and Shield? Ever since Gen 2 the game names have referred to what people call the “box legendaries”, which we’ll probably be seeing tomorrow... but lately, they’ve also tied into the games a bit. Black/White’s plot is squarely focused on morality and extremism, X/Y’s big focus is mega evolution, which is implied to be genetic in nature... I probably don’t have to explain Sun/Moon. So, what about Sword/Shield? Will there be equippable weapons and armor, distinct from held items? Will there be a Fire Emblem-style weapon triangle to deal with in addition to existing type matchups?
Now that I’ve gone on the record with all of that, it’s guaranteed that none of it will be even close to what we’ll see tomorrow, so you can look at all the things I didn’t say for clues as to what the direct will focus on.

PMD:Omega Ruby Part 8
Wow. Beating Maxie with a little Mudkip was super satisfying.Kiptide knows what he’s doing - even large evolved Poke’mon don’t daunt him.
Team Magma is probably a bit of a shock for the rescue team, what with actual deliberate attempts to cause disasters. That wasn’t generally the case in PMD1. Doubtless the team wasn’t cool with that ‘I will bury you by my own hand’ comment either. In the end someone did end up in a Rock Tomb... (cough Maxie’s Golbat).
Oh yeah! Caught a male Surskit (Skeeter), female Zangoose (Valiant), female Skarmory (Harshly), and female Spoink (Erin). It took a long time to encounter a Skarmory that could outspeed Kiptide. Doubt the first 3 will be team members, so... NPCs it is.
Last Nuzlocke it sucked that my Grumpig died quickly. Maybe we could raise this Spoink? Death-free and all that. It may soon be time to part ways with Zudo for a little bit. If so, he’ll go to the daycare, maybe along with another Poke’mon for company.
