My Experience in Japan
I thought I should be brave and share my rare negative experience of working as a teaching assistant in Japan. Sadly I got harrassed and mistreated in my place of work, but this became a taboo. When I tried to post my article to the official newsletter; they censored most of my original message and classed my bullying as simply 'cultural differences'. Sadly this means my article was unable to reach the target audience.
I wrote this article for any other teaching assistants who may be having a tough time teaching abroad, as well as a mode of release for myself.
Hope you like it!

One of my first year junior high kids got third in her first English speech contest!!! I'm so proud of both of my students since they were some of the only first years and they aren't very confident in class. I actually got them little gifts and a card to congratulate them even if they didn't win, but I joked that my little figure of Hello Kitty napping was kind of lame compared to a trophy (ironically the girl who won was way more hyped to get that than the 3rd place medal lmao). They were little gacha figures of Hello Kitty and PomPomPurin sleeping, with a message saying:
You did it! I am so proud of you. You worked very hard, and now you can rest--just like Hello Kitty/Pompompurin.
And even if my other girl didn't win, I gushed about how well she had improved since we first started practicing. Like her essay had a phrase that was impossible for her to pronounce at first ("which visit the"). And when she finally presented, she fucking NAILED it. She laughed when I had talked to her after the contest and went "___-san, the "which visit the"? 最高!完璧! 🤌"
Aaaa I'm so proud of them!

If you don't mind me asking, where are you teaching English in Japan? And with what program? I'm looking to apply to programs in Japan or China after I graduate.
Wow, I have no idea when this message came. I just opened (like, 15 years into using Tumblr) the message request menu 😂
I was teaching with Interac, an ALT company for 7 years. I worked for the Hiroshima Branch. There are many more different companies now than when I first came, so there are plenty of options anywhere you’d want to live in Japan.

So good news is, I got a teaching contract in Japan for March 2023.
Bad news is they said absolutely no cat.

I’ve had Sabriel basically her whole life. She’s helped me through some of the worst days I’ve ever had. There was a time when needing to take care of her was the only thing getting me out of bed.
Living in Japan is my lifelong dream, but I have to give up so fucking much to get there.
Some days I think I’m making a horrible mistake.
Some days I wonder if I should just accept a quiet life in the States somewhere.

The sentence above, in content and structure, resembles Twice’s narration directed at Hawks in chapter 266.)
4 そういやトガちゃんって souiya Toga-chan tte “Come to think of it, Toga-chan,”
5 敵名つけねえの? ヴィランめいつけねえの? VIRAN-mei tsukenee no? “can’t you [use] a villain name?”

the "strange place" could be a private wildlife collector? i know the buying and selling of wild animals as pets can be pretty bad in the uk (or at least it is w/ birds of prey? that's abt what i know)
OH that's a good idea, that's going to be one of my top choices for if I DO end up needing to change the "twoleg den" in the upcoming super edition. Private wildlife collectors are a HUGE problem because the laws on simply owning exotic animals (as long as they're not covered by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act) are suuuuper lax in the UK, and the Zoo Licensing Act only applies if you accept general admission.
(and even then, specifically, you can take admission a limited amount of times a year. James Wellington's Animal Welfare Nightmare Extravaganza, beloved winter tradition, £25 each, kiddies of edible height get in free)
Birds in particular are a huuuge issue because there's big oversights in the laws surrounding the keeping of birds of prey. You don't actually need a license to own any birds except ostriches and cassowaries, or one of the five destructive invasive birds. Your pet eagle just needs to be registered so they know you didn't snatch it from the wild. Licenses will only apply if you're breeding, selling, or using it for falconry.
Maybe I could even tie this hypothetical antagonist guy to Sharptooth/One Eye/The God of Summer's previous human incarnation, on some off-chance the series ends up using this villain again. That could be kinda neat.

I absolutely recommend this podcast featuring the music artist Ali for any other ALT (assistant language teachers in Japan) who are having a really difficult time in their jobs, or schools.
It's a shame that this can happen, and I thank them for openly speaking about this. Thank you!
Some do get lucky and find good schools or eikawa to work in, but it's sad how some schools are so rife with power harassment and abuse towards ALT.

cultural perspective being indispensible in media consumption but looking back i find it so funny that for years and years before teaching in japan i thought it was another suspension-of-disbelief surrealist kagepro thing that haruka and takane spent all their time in a homeroom class for just the two of them and now the maximum number of kids we've ever had in my special needs class is 3

Notable Teaching Moments
A kid asks me “Sensei what’s this” and then just. pokes me in the boob.
Ask a kid to draw his favourite fruit. He draws a dinosaur.
Learning to say “how old are you” / “I’m X years old”. One kid comments (in Japanese) “my mum is 1 year old”.
Reading a dictation about children’s day. The kids are delighted when I repeatedly fail to pronounce koinobori and take it upon themselves to teach me
Get mobbed by five-year-olds screaming “ANKOORU! ANKOORU!” until I fall over (I later learn this means “encore” and they basically wanted to play the game again)
Teaching a particularly rowdy class and it is hard. fucking. work. At the end, one kid turns to me and says “sensei, otsukaresama deshita” (which translates to something like “thank you for your hard work”)
Proudly show the kids my kanji practice. They gasp in horror. “Sensei! they’re terrible!” Says one.
“Okay everyone, touch something BLACK!” I shout. One five-year-old touches my black jeans in the form of slapping my ass.
One kid can’t write his name. I hold his crayon with him and we write it together. He spends the rest of the lesson not doing the colouring or the fun workbook activity, but just tracing his fingers over the letters and saying his name slowly and grinning.
It’s parent observation week. All the kids have a parent in the room and understandably choose to sit with Mum/Dad. Apart from one kid, who chooses my lap over Dad’s, even though every single week he cries and wants his Pappa for the first 10 minutes of class.
Kids are talking about Pokemon. I chime in. They’re noticeably shocked that I understand. I tell them I like Charizard. “Eeh Charizard’s weak! I like Pikachu!” One kid says. Charizard is objectively stronger than Pikachu on many levels, but I don't argue.
At the start of the class kids are doing a phonics activity. They have to choose whether word starts with C or G. One of the words is “gum”. despite the word being more or less the same in Japanese, an alarming number of kids write “cum”.
Kids are counting points at the end of class. Because they’re 11-year-old boys, they find it hilarious when I get to the number six. “Sex. Sex. Sensei, sex,” they say repeatedly.
I ask the kids how old they think I am. "72" says one of them. I’m in my early thirties.
I help one new kid write their name. Suddenly, all the kids who’ve been coming for months and can definitely write their name promptly forget and I have to help all 11 of them.

It's ridiculous how Japanese people get offended by korean drama depict how Japanese colonialism hurt korea. Saying how past is just past as if they have even really faced what they had done. They are now harassing the actress Han So Hee on her insta. Calling out the brutal history of japanese colonialism is not anti Japan, you self victimazing assholes. Learn your own history, have some conscious, take accountability, and be more like Germans
This is a japanese tweet that got 14k likes in japan
Translation: Did everyone wake up after seeing Han So Hee's Instagram? Even if Koreans say they like Japan in their mouths, in the end they are There is an anti-Japanese mindset that keeps dragging on past history. Hey, I found out that you have a lot of Japanese fans. When you post something like that, I realize that you are Korean.

why do you see bkg as trans?
i've had this ask sitting in my drafts since like august BECAUSE i knew if i did the question justice it was gonna get VERY long and pretty personal - if i'm gonna talk about it then i gotta talk about it in all earnest. and you've given me the floor to talk about it. so!!
at first i had these typed out as two separate points but i think they go a lot more hand-in-hand than that, so to start - when i think about my own gender and why i can't bring myself to identify fully with womanhood a lot of it is because there's something that feels so free about masculinity. mostly just like because of womanhood on a societal level a lot of my experience as a girl forever has been "you need to think about how your existence makes other people feel. you really need to present yourself in a way that's pleasant for other people. the way you look, the way you talk, the way you conduct yourself - people are entitled to having a say in all that. and if any of that isn't living up to the way it's supposed to be, then that's a fault of yours." here's a vent post i made when i was 17:
Tumblr media
which is mostly really superficial examples of the suffocating expectation of girlhood but it's also so blatantly about bkg. in the moment my thought process was more like "i'm so deeply unsatisfied with so many parts of being a girl, it sounds like there'd be so many less people to answer to if i were a boy" but it's funny reading back on it bc it's like "dude are you just talking about bkg". but then who's a better example of choosing to stomp through life exactly as loud and rude as he wants to be without answering to anyone than bakugou katsuki!! honest about his thoughts in any case!! free to speak as bluntly and rudely as he wants!! never putting up with shit that makes him feel unlike himself!! walks with big wide steps and wears stupid baggy clothes and doesn't care what people have to say about it and doesn't feel worse if they do disagree. grins crazy blasting himself through the air. fights with big windup swings and shouts all the while. huge huge presence and so unafraid to assert it. named himself great・explosion・murder・god dynamight. i think i project a big sense of defiance onto bkg's character because everything he is just feels so defiant to me. there's just a lot that i admire about boyhood and bkg feels like the embodiment of it to me
and then you've got bkg himself, who like- isn't even fulfilling the "doesn't feel worse about himself if he is genuinely not the greatest or kindest" part of it!! bkg's character is so centered around figuring out who he is and like navigating through the mortifying ordeal of existing and not actually liking the person you are and trying to figure out where to go from there- he really thinks he has so much to prove...both in the sense that he DOES want to project this big image and also that he really can't cut himself a break. and then he freaks out when he's not becoming the person he wants to be and picks a fight with deku over it and totally breaks down and picks himself back up and forces himself to seriously rewire the entire view of himself and others that he's had his entire life - he's 16 - and goes to all this teeth-clenching effort to be a better person and has highs and lows and wears himself raw and then comes back to life. well the quality of the later part of his arc is very debatable. but his character is so about just figuring out who he is and kind of failing at it a lot of the time. and then eventually figuring it out and getting confident and stable in it. he makes friends who rib on him because they know he's got a good heart under it all, and moreover he lets them. he gets good at shouting something back and carrying on. you see the amount of conscious thinking it takes him to take some of those steps - rethinking his relationship with deku, the god am i really fucking doing this scoff before he gives kirishima back the money - but a lot of it is just steady growth. growing up. genuinely getting more comfortable and more okay with himself over time. but there's also all these little failures along the way because he's just a kid figuring it out, and also genuinely this anger towards the world for not understanding it when he does assert himself (sports festival....where deku also specifically notes that he knows he's not as confident as he wants to be!)
i haven't really closely reread bnha in a sec so a lot of this is probably a lot of projecting (i know it's undeniably influenced by the picture of bkg i have in my head) and i probably also didn't really clarify anything, because in the end everything bakugou is feels very trans to me. "the image you have of bkg katsuki in your head can actually be so personal" etc. digging into my archives i found this post from years back where i described basically the same stuff about bkg being a teen figuring himself out and saying "so yeah he's trans" without being able to hit it more on the head. kirishima is my favorite most special boy of all time, and i love him in so many ways, but bkg is my cringefail stinky teen boy in w the unshatterable determination to actually go MAKE himself the person he wants to be, no matter how many missteps he makes on the way there. it brings me a lot of comfort to imagine him being a self-made man as a part of the because gender is so confusing and questioning can be so intense. i'm 23 and i'm typing all this about an anime boy so i hope it's evident what a soul-bearingly honest answer this is bc otherwise oh haha embarrassing. but yeah i love that kid. i hope every little victory and day where his voice sounds good to him and glance of his top scars in the mirror feels like one of the high points on the journey
