I was OBSESSED with The Hobbit movies when they first came out—say what you will about my taste 😔—but I 100% headcanoned Kíli to be female and Kíli/Tauriel to be a lesbian relationship and I still think I’m right

(likely a modern AU so the timeline fits)
Eddie feels so very, very torn about the Hobbit movies. He loves the music and hums "the Misty Mountains Cold" before he can catch himself, but he not very silently screams about all the crap that was added for no reason and, the bad CGI? A travesty, your honor! He glares at the screen when Legolas appears and utters "where the fuck did you come from?", he loves the casting choice for Bilbo but absolutely roasts the idiotic way that the screenwriters butchered Bilbo's relationship with the dwarves and the way it evolved.
But the thing he never forgives those movies for is that unbelievably idiotic love triangle and the way it made others tear up when Eddie's soul temporarily left his body to punch Peter Jackson. Because it DOES. NOT. MAKE. SENSE. There was no development. The flirting was bad, trust him, he knows what good flirting looks like and this ain't it. Eddie hates it with passion, especially the scene that overshadows the incredibly powerful one with Thorin's death. He is PISSED. The scene is so so SO lazy and Thrandúil did not deserve this disrespect. Shit, even the weird added ginger elf Tauriel did not deserve it. Yes, we're talking this scene:
Tumblr media
Eddie mocks the shit out of this. He gobbles up all the memes and there is a 50/50 chance in the months after he saw the fateful scene that his contempt for it would bubble up.
"Hey Eddie," asks Steve whe he sees Eddie between moving boxes when they finally find an apartment together . "Why aren't you packing?"
And Eddie, instead of saying "I'm taking a break," clutches his chest and chokes out, "because it was real, Steve!"
When Eddie goes to buy groceries and Steve unpacks them, he notices that Eddie bought two bags of potatoes instead of one. "Why did you get two?" he asks.
Eddie rummages through his pockets and produces the receipt. "Because the discount was real!" he says with a mock sob and points at the potatoes being 30% off.
And Steve is a patient man, he really is, but when Eddie tells him that the claws were real as a response to his question why is Eddie all scratched from their cat and refuses to elaborate, he threatens that if it doesn't stop being real, he's going to get a set of the Hobbit movie posters for his side of the bedroom and proudly display them.
Eddie bitches, moans, threatens, but eventually he moves past the idiotic love triangle.
When they lie together, falling asleep, Eddie mutters into Steve's neck "I can't believe that stupid threat worked on me. Why would you even thing about something like that?"
Steve turns to him with a deadpan expression and says:
"Because it was real."

Chloe the way I started RACKING my brain for any tv show that you watched and ended up deep in your blog 💀💀💀
anyway it's not technically a tv series but how about the hobbit movies! you rewatching them recently made me want to rewatch
gjdhdjjdks rissa I was doing the same thing with you OKAY LETS GO
Favourite character: gosh uhhhhh, when I first got into the movies I was obsessed with Thranduil, but now I think Thorin might be my favourite. I do love all the dwarves tho
Funniest character: bombur has some small funny moments from what I remember
Best-looking character: Thorin 😮‍💨
3 favourite ships: bagginshield, barduil, and that’s it bc I couldn’t care less about kili/tauriel
Least favourite character: radagast im sorry bro is annoying
Least favourite ship: not that I have major negative feelings about it but kili/tauriel
Reason why I watch it: even though the plot is kinda meh and super bloated a lot of the character interactions are really great
Why I started watching it: okay so back in 2012 I was going to the movies with my nan. We were planning to see Les Mis but on the way I saw the poster for The Hobbit and asked if we could see that instead. After that nan and I saw the rest at the cinema together as well :)

Do you think that overall the male character s in RWBY are more compelling than the female characters? Something I’ve noticed about the RWDE bloggers I keep up with is that their favorites all seem to be Ironwood, Oz, Oscar, Sun, and Mercury. Don’t get me me wrong, I’m definitely NOT accusing the RWDE community of hating on female characters and being sexist. It’s totally normal for people to prefer male characters when the creators have made a bunch of interesting, multi-dimensional male characters and neglected female characters (or in RWBY’s case, letting the formerly multi-dimensional and interesting female characters fall into unlikability). Just curious if you think this is the reason for the male fave prevalence with RWDEs or if it’s just coincidence
I think that the writing is definitely a big part of it. Back in the first three seasons of RWBY, the main four characters were put in a lot more focus in the narrative, and the writing was more even. Most of the RWDE posters I've seen, talk about having loved many characters back then, including me. My favorites for a long time were Yang, Blake, Sun, Qrow, and Nora. And there were other characters I liked and enjoyed like Ren, Ozpin, Ironwood, Jaune, Mercury, Emerald, Ruby, Weiss, Whitley... But they tended to take a backseat while I gushed about how much I loved all the Yang scenes in volume five and how Blake got a bad rep and about how fun and cute I thought Nora was and how freaking awesome and fun Qrow was. But the longer the show went on, the less Team RWBY were actually treated like the main protagonists, while the writing focused on other characters and paid more attention to them.
Another interesting thing to note is that many of the characters that are commonly loved and defended among RWDE posters are characters that either the show or the fandom treats badly.
Oscar gets beat, kidnapped, and attacked more than arguably any of the other mains, while he's also one of the only characters that didn't fully volunteer and was more or less trapped into getting involved. And on top of that, he's an active hero who tries hard, and matters to the villains while having an important role.
Oz not only got mistreated and traumatized by the mains without apology or recognition of everything he went through in the show, he also gets crapped on over and over by the fandom at large, who refuse to recognize him as an abuse victim and try to paint him as a horrible, manipulative, wicked person - all while making tons of excuses for Ruby doing basically the same stuff. And on top of that, he's active and tries hard and matters to the villains while having an important role.
Mercury gets painted as irredeemable scum by a lot of the fandom, who all were ready to forget him and ignore his own past as an abuse victim the second Emerald was no longer around him, and are already making posts about how people only like Mercury or want him to be redeemed because he's a man and writing him off as hopeless. And the show itself have been shafting him and not portraying him very sympathetically, despite the fact that his backstory is arguably more sympathetic than Emerald's (not trying to compare trauma here, just trying to talk about one reason why people are frustrated.) And on top of that, he hasn't actually been featured much since season five, and therefore hasn't yet had his character ruined or complicated.
Likewise, Sun is often treated as a nuisance and a pushy jerk that Blake never even liked by the fandom, who only got in the way. People over-exaggerate a lot of his flaws and downplay his good traits and his role with Blake. And in the Before the Dawn book, the Sun hate gets literally hard to read and the writer is so obviously biased against him that it's a little comical. On top of that, like Mercury, he hasn't actually been featured much since season five, and therefore hasn't had his character ruined or complicated.
Other RWDE favorites like Whitley and Ren are also mistreated or misrepresented by the fandom at large, and favored by RWDE posters. Because honestly, once you start defending someone and trying to get into their head, you're more likely to like and get attached to that character.
I personally always have a problem when I talk about my favorites in RWBY, because if I talk about my favorite characters to write for that I still love the concept of, it'd still be Yang, Qrow, Blake, Nora, and Roman, with James added because after V7 I did start loving his character a lot more. But although I still talk at length about how the characters have been mishandled, when I'm actually discussing how RWBY characters are in canon, my options become limited as far as picking favorites. XD Sun and Mercury haven't been really damaged yet by the show's bad writing, Whitley, May, and Jaune managed to come out of the last couple of seasons mostly looking good, Yang, Ren, and Penny are at least better than most of the others... And Oz is still really good, while Oscar is... On thin ice, but mostly fine I guess.
I can't even credit Ironwood as a canon favorite, because he was horribly done (and Winter was better than most that season too, but so tied up in pushing Ironwood as a villain that I personally can't get past it right now.)
But yeah, I'd say one of the reasons that RWDE posters tend to favor a lot of male characters is because they're simultaneously treated as more important to the plot and given more focus than the woman characters, while at the same time, they're often villainized and treated unfairly by the narrative or the fandom or both. It's definitely not because the RWDE fandom just doesn't like women, it's because the RWBY writers actively struggle to present their women characters as active and important to the plot, while at the same time, they try to say they're great and don't acknowledge their flaws. There's a lot of internalized sexism in RWBY, I think. They made iincredibly flawed woman characters who are constantly overtaken, outmatched, and treated as less important than the men around them. And yet they have them glorified as flawless and amazing badasses with sass. While at the same time, they rely on them being sympathetic by being cute, vulnerable, wide eyed, and teary to get people to squee and aww over how upset the terrible circumstances have made them and how no one can expect them to keep going like this. It makes them feel lackluster and not convincing or compelling. It's like watching Tauriel in the Hobbit movies. Disappointing, a little insulting.

Wrote a long review about finishing the Hobbit trilogy finally (adhd is like BYE to long films sometimes) and about what I liked about them but Facebook refreshed randomly so it went into the void. 🙃Rewrote a shorter one!
Anyway it was good. Galadriel 💙 Gandalf 💙 Tauriel 💙 Kili (because yay Aiden, still prefer him as a vamp or Poldark though). Billy Connolly as Dain, YES! Thranduil 💙he sounded like the Goblin King in my opinion? Did anyone else find that? The visual production of Smaug was most welcome, and enjoyed. The jewels glistening and the gold dazzling and falling from his wings and scales in flight was amazing, and I can only imagine what witnessing it in the cinema would feel like. The cgi has become fantastic and it’s great to see how far we’ve come. Some types I don’t like in comparison to some older types, but I did like it for this, yeah. I couldn’t get over the initial first big battle in the Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe, let alone what this would’ve been like on the big screen. I don’t even need to reassure my appreciation for Gandalf as usual. Bilbo, yiss. I like Orlando but I find him most comfortable to watch for his style of acting in this role? Maybe it helped having a life sized poster of him at the top of my childhood staircase (mum was a fan). Thorin, yeah I liked. A few times it’s like, uhhh are you okay man? And no. Possessed by gold and what have you. Alright time to exorcise the miniature King Midas. To be fair I’d be like bye bitches if my castle was a mountain lmao.
But the most beautiful the statement of all, before Thorin passed after the battle, gosh, really, really is the one:
“Farewell, Master Burglar. Go back to your books... and your armchair... plant your trees, watch them grow. If more people valued home above gold, this world would be a merrier place..”

Thranduil is a better feminist that Galadriel or Idril or whoever. From all the male characters, only Finarfin comes close to how he adopts his wife's culture but in the end his kids are all identified as Noldor bc of the patriarchal influences. They're only referred to as their mother's kids when it's a negative (Caranthir's comment to Angrod). But, Legolas literally only identifies w/ his mother's culture and so does Thranduil.
Hmm...I kinda have to disagree. I think feminism at it’s core is about women (of course it extends to other groups, etc.), and in relation to Thranduil and Galadriel I don’t consider him more of a feminist than her.
I think it really depends on perspective and who’s reading what? Galadriel is going to be feminist because she’s seen as empowering to women for her position and her power, whereas others will see her as someone who subjugates people due to her whiteness.
Thranduil may have assimilated into his culture, but as I discussed on twitter, his story is very much the ‘white man’s burden’ and ‘white savior’ kinda story. If we’re talking about this in terms of colonization with Galadriel vs. Thranduil, Thranduil certainly does better. But he’s not perfect.
But feminism? I think Galadriel’s character is incredibly layered, and there is a great deal of feminism that does go into her writing. Albeit incredibly white feminism for like 99.9 % of her writing, but there are some parts that exist apart from white feminism.
Ie: her being able to be the only one to face Sauron in the hobbit, Galadriel fighting and not succumbing to the ring, Galadriel being compared to a witch but plot twist--she’s good (because writing about women and magic is incredibly sexist).
Galadriel isn’t perfect at all, and her character if full of racisms. But Thranduil too is layered. His narrative is filled with sexism, racism just as Galadriel’s narrative is. It’s just different.
And while he does considerably better in SOME instances, I don’t see him doing anything substantial that makes him more “feminist” than Galadriel.
I think the implications that he fully endowed himself in his wife’s culture is important, but at the same time we know so little of her. So while the implications of him adopting her culture exists, for him to be “more feminist” than Galadriel he would need to put her on equal footing. Yet all we know of his wife is his son.
It’s very patriarchal. This is why I enjoyed the Hobbit due to Tauriel, and the implications that she was on equal footing as legolas or at least a surrogate daughter of Thranduil. But those hopes were dashed lmao.
I won’t even touch up on Idril (or Tuor)  as I despise her with my entire being, she’s the poster child for anti-blackness. We don’t speak of her on this blog XD

39. If you could say anything to the author, the characters, or the actors, what would it be?
Mostly just a big thank you! These characters, as well as their actors, and even Tolkien himself, gave me something that made my childhood so much better. It was something so influential to me, that even now in college, I still watch the movies and have posters and read the books and write for characters. LOTR, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion are like.. ingrained into my soul, and it is one of the only series I have never stopped loving.
(Also if I could talk to Haldir as a character yall all know I’d be on one knee proposing to my mans <3)
43. What is the one thing that you never get tired of?
I NEVER get tired of Two Towers. I could watch that movie 80 times in a row and be entertained every time. Other than that, its characters cause I never get tired of my fav babies.
46. Last but not least, is there anything in the series that you would want to change?
Mostly I would want to change 2 things. One is how they shot the Hobbit movies. Don't get me wrong they are great, I just felt like by making it 3 movies in an effort to be more like LOTR, they added unnecessary stuff and some parts get extremely boring. However, I do like the added characterization for Bard and the addition of Tauriel (minus her weird love triangle with Leggylas and Kili). The other thing I want to change is from The Silmarillion. So, it's clear that Melkor/Morgoth seduces Mairon who later is known as Sauron. But, Tolkien never gives us the HOW of this seduction, and I honestly want to know how it happened, especially since Sauron becomes super scarily loyal to Melkor and gets the rings forged, etc. in an attempt to bring him back. I wish that the how/why had been added for their whole *totally platonic* partnership.

1. I read some essays recounting the long year 2020 was- I chose to ignore this because everything looks as if it were the same, but it’s not. we all know we have changed, that our situation have either improved or worsen, depending on how high we are in the scale of privilege. the world is not the same but every time you take a bath you’re never the same and you will never be that old self again. it’s good and it’s also bad- ridiculously philosophical in my opinion, but the greeks knew what was up before we knew what exactly was up.
2. i am about to wrap up DS9. It is an excellent tv show, perhaps the best star trek. i have so many things to say about it but know this: it’s what star trek needed to loosen up a bit, to play with characters and go beyond the sci-fi specter. of course it has flaws, some stories are absolute nonsense and others, in today’s standard of what we can call “good tv” (touchy concept, but I’ll get there one day), don’t sound so good, but overall, it’s great tv, written with intention and care and fun. i also watched the trilogy of the hobbit and I liked it even more- despite the stretching and some plot holes (Legolas’ mom...who are you? should we care? also, Tauriel girl what happened to you after Kili died? and how many people does it take to kill a damn Orc?) the film really captures why I love Tolkien, why i think Middle Earth’s stories are so fun and entertaining and why Peter Jackson cared so much in writing something for Tolkien but also for the fans. The story of a hobbit that goes on an adventure and comes back with PTSD and has to deal with the fragile masculinity of a dwarf that also has mental issues is something worth exploring too. But also Smaug is not scary, just creepy.
3. I painted my house. my study is now pink and I love it. it’s my ultimate love letter to my spaces, to the importance of having a place where you can write and read, do the things that are private without anyone interfering. when I first read Woolf’s book I thought my bedroom could count as a place of my own, but when I moved in with my boyfriend, I realized I didn’t have a space that was my own. Now that I have it, filled with posts it, posters and a messy desk (and no one telling me anything about the mess) I understand this is incredibly important so you can create freely and with no pressure. A woman’s place is really where she can feel safe to be herself, to do what she wants to do and do it freely and without anyone else sharing that space.
4. It’s frustrating that I can find the words in english and spanish to say almost everything, but in french I always have to stop myself and say “comment-te-dire...?” so my professor can tell me the words and I repeat them. It happens almost every day, and every time it happens my professor reminds me I’m still on early stages. Learning a new language, and doing it with the mindset that it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be what it is, is challenging because we are used to wanting things to be a certain way (our way) and sometimes not knowing how to talk is a reminder that we are a constant effort on finding the ways to communicate.
5. On women’s day I wanted to write about what happened. I wrote it in my head, explaining how, when it happens, your perspective shifts into a survival mode so you can live or continue doing something similar to that. But as time goes by, and as you go back on it, over and over again, when you revise with what you’ve learnt, you realize it was never your fault and you learn that at some point, you will forgive yourself for it. You will learn that you are not a direct result of that, that it didn’t make you stronger or better, it didn’t lead you anywhere, or that you were destined to something or anything at all. You just take who you were then and make sure she knows one day you will wake up and love the life you have now. And so I didn’t write anything about it. I don’t know owe the telling to anyone.

WIP dump because I'm a butt and haven't been active.
I've been having zero motivation to draw but I pushed myself to start 3 more pieces the other day.
In order we have:
☆baseline sketch of Kili and Tauriel from the Hobbit
☆another baseline sketch of Thranduil and a currently unnamed woman for a character project that I was supposed to do like a year ago.
☆A redraw of Tauriels poster thing that everyone seems to love redrawing, I'm doing it as simply practice
☆Another progress pic of the Tauriel pic. I got to this point and realised hands are hard, lips suck and I hate the patterns on her clothing so. Regret. Might not finish. Who knows at this point
☆Turtles, because I was gonna do a creature mashup and one of the animals was a turtle but I'd never drawn them before so I figured I should sketch some out. Then gave up to play StarCraft
And that's all, just trying to get a post up on this page so I don't forget. Maybe I'll be able to finish.

Of Earth and Sea: 1/9 (Prologue)
Tumblr media
A little over a year ago, I wrote this story for the first Captain Swan Supernatural Summer. I was new to tumblr with few followers and little idea how this site even worked! It was also my first fandom event. It’s hard to believe everything that has happened since!
Because I was a newbie, some of you may have missed this story the first time around. It’s my Tolkien crossover fic largely inspired by Colin’s ears. I also didn’t post each individual chapter on tumblr (I didn’t know how!), and I know some of you prefer to read it that way. So, I’m reposting. It’s also an excuse to show off this incredible art once again by @shipsxahoy ! I mean, look at it!!! It’s a freakin’ movie poster for my fic. She is amazing!
I’ll be posting a chapter a day, sometimes two, until next Friday when I post part one of my new fic for THIS years @cssns: An Education in Southern Gothic, a ghost possession two shot. I am SO excited to share it with ya’ll!
Rating: T
Tagging a few who may have missed it the first time (let me know if you want to be tagged or removed from this list): @snowbellewells (Marta, I know you already read it, but thought you would like the art!) @let-it-raines @profdanglaisstuff @welllpthisishappening @optomisticgirl @wellhellotragic @jennjenn615 @kday426 @mythologicalmango @thislassishooked @xhookswenchx
On Ao3 too, of course.
The hold of a ship is far from a pleasant place to sleep. The darkness, the stuffiness, the damp air. Not to mention the smell of unbathed men and the irritating drone of their snores. Yet Killian Jones is hard pressed to remember sleeping any other way. Orphaned and enslaved at the age of seven, his memories of anything but creaking wood, sea, and salt are hazy at best. His swinging hammock and the sticky wet heat are at least familiar if not pleasant.
Yet there are nights when his dreams take him to the most beautiful place. There are towering trees, and mossy grass beneath his bare feet. There’s a tall, tall waterfall that spills over the highest spire Killian has ever seen. Its spray and mist as it hits the pool below is warmer and sweeter than the spray of the sea. A haze seems to linger over the scene, softening the dazzling sun to a pleasant warmth. The feel of everything is unfamiliar to him. Even when the ship docks, there is little of grass or trees or songbirds in port towns. Just more wet wood, dingy stone, and mud. Thick, oozing mud made rancid with animal droppings and refuse. But here, in this place Killian visits in his dreams, all his pure and clean and soft. And oh, so beautiful.
There are people there too, who smile at him serenely, and when they bend near him, he can see their ears poking through their long, straight hair. Pointed ears. Elves. These elves feed him the most pleasant of fruits and sweet bread. They lead him to a bower in the trees where they sing him to sleep.
Liam was alarmed when Killian first told him about this place he visits in his dreams. And his concern only increased the more Killian spoke of it. So eventually, Killian stopped telling his brother at all. He certainly knew he shouldn’t tell him about mother visiting.
Only when he dreams of this beautiful place does she come to him. He swims up from the dream reluctantly, the lullabies of the elves morphing to his mother’s sweet voice.
“O mor henion i dhu. Ely siriar, el sila. Ai! Melme ende. Tiro! El eria e mor. I lir en el luitha uren. Ai! Melme ende.”
She seems to almost float towards him, bathed in a pure white light. He reaches for her.
“Mother?”
“Killian,” she breathes, bending near him. She cups his face and brushes his face with a kiss.
He is always so happy to see her, his heart feels it may burst. But he frowns too, hurt that she never stays to morning light.
“What is it, my son?” she asks, brushing his hair back tenderly from his face.
“Why have you gone away? Why do you only come at night?”
Her face is sad as she strokes his cheek. “It is more than a child can understand. But it the way of elves. The best I can do to explain is this: when you are at sea, we are separated from one another. Except in your dreams.”
At this her cheeks, sprinkled with freckles just like his, dimple in a smile. And Killian smiles back.
“So I can always dream of you? And you’ll come?”
Tauriel expels a shaky breath, and a tear slips down her cheek. “As long as your childhood lasts, my son. But when you become a man, the land of the elves will be barred from your dreams.”
“Then I don’t want to become a man!” Killian cries out, grasping her hands in his.
Tauriel chuckles, a sparkle alighting her moss green eyes. “I think you will change your mind one day. You will want to grow strong and brave like your brother. And you will want to give your heart to a pretty lass. You won’t need me so much then.”
“But I do need you, mother!” Killian argues, throwing his skinny arms around her neck.
She clasps him tight, breathing in his little boy scent. “As long as your dreams call for me, I will come. And even when you grow into a man, I will never be far. I can’t travel the seas, but anytime you are at port, I won’t be far.”
She strokes his hair and kisses his cheek, then tucks him back into his hammock. Killian glances over at Liam.
“Why do you not visit Liam? He misses you, too.”
Guilt flashes across Tauriel’s face as she glances over at her step son. The boy she loves as much as her own flesh and blood. She tucks the blankets under Killian’s arms and sighs.
“I wish I could. But like I said before, this is the way of elves. And he is not of my blood. Not like you, Killian.”
“Is that why his ears aren’t like ours?” Killian asks with a tilt of his head as he runs his fingertips across his mother’s ears.
She laughs again, a lilting sound like a bird’s song. “Aye. You have the ears of an elf. And handsome they are at that.”
Killian grins as she bends to kiss each ear, her auburn hair brushing against his cheeks. “And now I must go. Awaken from your dreams with the strength of the elves, my son.”
She touches his forehead gently with delicate fingers. Then she’s floating away from him, dissolving into mist, singing the lullaby, but this time in English.
“From darkness I understand the night: dreams flow, a star shines. Ah! I desire a lover’s heart. Look! A star rises out of the darkness. The song of the star enchants my heart. Ah! I desire a lover’s heart.”
And when he awakes at dawn, he does feel stronger, lighter, faster. He feels like an elf.
