Oldtron People and Places: Shannon, Tangor, and Zandee

The Sea Team, unfortunately, contains two of the least shown and personality-less characters on the Vehicle Voltron crew. I’ve included as much information as I could but sadly this particular post isn’t going to have a lot of meat to it. Sorry. With that said here’s a closer look at the remaining members of the Sea Team: Shannon, Tangor, and Zandee.

Name: Shannon

Dairugger Name: Tatsuo Izumo

Team: Sea Team

Ship: Multi-Wheeled Explorer. Forms Voltron’s lower right leg.

Special Relationships: Is friends with a young Drule fighter pilot named Sandu.

Personality: Shannon is broody, impetuous, cynical, and arguably has the worst temper out of everyone on the team. He has an intense hatred of Drules because his brother was imprisoned by them and left to rot in the dungeons of Planet Doom. Displays of emotion and sentimentality irritate him, putting him at odds with the sensitive Lisa, who he considers too emotional and child-like. While he can definitely be a jerk at times, he occasionally shows a softer side. In one episode he’s able to put his prejudices aside to befriend a young Drule named Sandu. Episodes to Shine: “A Temporary Truce”

Name: Tangor

Dairugger Name: Saruta Katz

Team: Sea Team

Ship: Space Prober. Forms Voltron’s upper left leg.

Special Relationships: Is the same species as Wolo.

Personality: All we really know about Tangor is his huge appetite. His speaking lines are pretty few and far between and he doesn’t appear much outside of group shots. The only other information we have is the his brief character bio provided in the Vehicle Voltron DVD, which describes him as “tough talking” and the last guy a Drule “would want to run into in a dark Space Station.”

Episodes to Shine: None.

Name: Zandee

Dairugger Name: Barros Karateya

Team: Sea Team

Ship: Multi-Wheeled Explorer. Forms Voltron’s lower left leg.

Special Relationships: None

Personality: Unknown, sadly. This guy is the least shown of the Vehicle Voltron team and only very rarely gets a speaking line.  The character bio provided by the DVDs claims he’s a friendly crack pilot who’s loyal to the team. We’ll just have to take their word for it.

Episodes to Shine: None.

"Izumo really changed"

A post about a subtle development of a side character in DaiRugger XV named Izumo Tatsuo.

In the very beginning Izumo is shown to have a very romantic side to him. His idealism painted his world views and his actions. Here are some examples of the dialogue I was able to find that support this.

Here, we have Izumo responding negatively to Dr Search telling him their efforts fighting over a planet were worthless. And a little lower is him responding negatively to the food being spent on a PoW. At this point his black and white thinking influenced by Earth's encounters with the Galveston Empire have painted a picture in his brain where all Galveston soldiers are at fault for what happened. And to him he is justified in his distrust.

When Izumo finally begins to understand the grey areas presented by the conflict and he makes up with Sim his drive doesn't go away. Moreover the newfound perspective gives him even more drive to pursue his dreams of an ideal future for everyone.

And then Sim meets a terrible fate.

And after this happens we get our first substantial Izumo moment in episode 20 where he tells Haruka off for being naive and optimistic. The change in the attitude is noted by Patty.

ln the same episode we get another out of character dialogue bit from Izumo, now with Walter.

And here's the last (for this post) instance of Izumo being called out on his lack of romance.

Can you really blame the guy when he watched his alien bf die right in front of him?

Interesting character bits from DaiRugger XV episode 4

Keats is sensing something bad and Aki tries to calm him down. Walter finds this quite ironic. It sets the basic characterization between the team captains and I think it's was a very neat interaction.

What intrigues me however is Walter and Aki's attitude throughout the episode.

When Keats is sent into a destructive region Aki is on edge and is very worried about Keats and the others. He thinks they should have sent Aki Team as well. He is being calmed down by Walter who is being quite chill about this because he has full trust in Keats and his team.

Walter also basically makes fun of Aki here as well due to Aki's reputation as a hothead.

However, once it's confirmed that Keats Team is in trouble and Ise sends out Aki Team and Walter Team to find them their attitude flips.

Aki, now that he has some control over the situation, is calm because he can see Keats' status for himself even if it will take some time before they find him. Walter on other hand is worried and constantly asks Aki if he's detecting Keats Team's presense.

It's only when they confirm that Keats Team is in one piece Walter can relax and go back to his usual laid back self.

Because I've exceeded the limit for pictures you will have to trust my word on the rest.

This episode is the first one (I think?) to indicate that Keats and Haruka are on the first name basis (there's more in some of the next episodes).

Ise: DaiRugger, can you hear us? Aki: That voice.

This episode has the most Baros content out of any other DaiRugger XV episodes. This one goes to every Baros stan out there.

It's also one of the earlier episodes where Izumo is shown to be idealistic and righteous as he refuses to abort the rescue mission even though it might mean the end of them. The other instances include some of his lines during the Achilles Arc. I might make a post about that...

Katz is also incredibly loyal to his captain - Keats. He was shown defending Keats from accusations thrown by other Rugger Team members.

Kirigas always looks after Keats whenever she feels as though something is bothering him. She seems to have a high emotional intelligence even if her premonition abilities are not as good as Keats'.
