tuesday again 2/20/2024
i don't usually use these writeups as a memory aid, but this week it's good bc most of last week was a blur of applying to jobs and playing breath of the wild
listening
i have several playlists that are several hours long with a couple different flavors of the really specific kind of instrumental music i need to do mass quantities of data entry. these are now all poisoned by horrible memories of my last two jobs so i'm slowly building new ones. a great candidate is OASIS, off the REDLINE soundtrack. REDLINE (2009, dir. Koike) is an extremely horny anime movie about driving really fast, being true to yourself in spite of corporate overlords, sports betting, and fucking.
youtube
i think this was a scene with background club or cafe music? electronica instrumental with a little bit of a groove and a very particular mid-aughts sound. you know when powder coating is extremely matte but also extremely sparkly? spotify.

reading
Samantha Cole (previously Vice, co-founder of 404 Media) has a beat that's focused on sex tech, sex work, deplatforming of sex work, and kink community beefs that manages to be both detached and very, very kind. i trust her to write about any kink community in a respectful and fair way, and even when she visibly doesn't understand the appeal of a kink she writes about them in a respectful and fair way. a great example of this is the furry adult baby diaper community being deplatformed by patreon.
but her most recent investigation, "can this shitty vibrator actually give you malware?" is fascinating. any job that can legitimately claim vibrators as a buisness expense and perform a teardown is fascinating to me.
what a tremendous and endlessly fascinating world we live in.

watching
Tumblr media
there are many movies on tubi that i have like. name recognition of but have never actually seen, so i'm starting to work my way through things that aren't noir or obscure westerns. like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, dir. Lee).
youtube
the practial effects in this movie are insane. the wirework is insane. wirework insane. this is the dreamiest and most beautiful chase/fight scene i've ever seen and they're zipping around a bamboo forest.
Tumblr media
we're going to have to live with this imperfect screenshot ok this laptop is Extremely old. the interior sets often look like theater sets (complimentary). just a stunningly beautiful movie with the sickest action scenes you’ve ever seen. plot a little choppy but forgivable imo. i know this is regarded as one of the finest movies of all time, not just one of the finest martial arts movies of all times, so saying anything feels a little like giving it a dollar store plastic trophy. i liked it and i had fun. watching a critically acclaimed non-american good movie is good for the brain steeped in lackluster american westerns, i think.

playing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
much like in real life, in breath of the wild i am refusing to do much towards the main quest and am mostly puttering around looking for shit to upgrade my outfits.
Tumblr media
unlocked rudania, did not go inside.
Tumblr media
what's with this little. sword graveyard??? on the northeastern edge of the caldera??? the only thing on that island is an octorok?? did it kill like eight guys???
Tumblr media
finished richard scarey's tarreytown :) including that horrible rich guy who wanted me to kill some guardians for ??? reasons. i am pretty confident about killing hinox (is the plural of hinox, hinox?), wizzrobes, and most lizalfos if i can get the drop on em but i am Not confident about killing actively moving guardians without guardian arrows, which is an expensive way of doing business. due to reliably one-shotting the wizzrobes with revali's bow, i am running into the interesting problem of always having a glut of magical weapons. which leads me to go fuck around the extreme hot and cold areas those magic weapons are good for. and less fucking around the normie areas i actually want to fuck around.
Tumblr media
got the good sword at thirteen hearts, i stopped short at twelve hearts gone and the deku tree called me a pussy. i unfontunately did not screenshot that. hey did you know there's a korok on the deku tree's head whose life's purpose seems to be riddles?
Tumblr media
:(
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now for quite a lot of horse talk.
dodged like four lynels taking Ganon's horse up the northern edge of the map to get a pic of the leviathan.
caught the white horse, we are such pretty pretty princesses together. i think it's very funny that the gerudo fanciest weapons and hylian royal regalia look so similar. purple and gold eternal.
did you know if you feed your horse an endura carrot you get extra spurs???
i was looking for a 5 star speed horse but after catching and releasing four different solid black horses this is the best one (4 str, 4 speed, 5 stamina) i found. maybe I’ll shoot for a bright chestnut with lots of chrome for my speedy horse, the equine equivalent of a red convertible.
very funky conincidence on the grasslands behind the lord of the mountain's spring. not identical, bc the lead horse doesn't have facial markings, but what are the odds of that huh. i wish grays in this game didn't look so chalky and washed out, i love a gray horse in real life.
Tumblr media
i think it's some bullshit that you have to fight your way into this spring, get told "go get a dragon scale", deal with all that, fight your way BACK into the spring, and then be presented with a Major Test of Strength shrine. c'mon just give it to me!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
game continues to be very bad at spitting out riders next to horses or donkeys EXCEPT!!! for this doctor. i didn't know hyrule had traveling doctors! i quite honestly didn't think they had the techonology, given that the state of medicine in hyrule is very mortar and pestle based!
Tumblr media
the game gave me a tooltip like "make friends with dogs! they'll lead you to treasure!" and i was like What but it does actually work, you just have to target them in the camera first and then feed them several hunks of meat. bonkers game. how many other goddamn mechanics are there that i've missed???
next steps: shrine hunting. i have like 50 out of 120 which is wild to me. i played this game two years ago, got to about a hundred shrines, and managed to forget where they all fucking are. yes my shrine sensor is always on. there's probably at least twenty in central hyrule, which is not a place i touched much on my list playthrough, also the last two memories i need are in there. i have filled out a good chunk of the compendium (completely filled the materials pages) but idk if i will be a completionist about it. there are so so so so so many weapons variants. i am cheating a bit and looking up the animals i missed (mostly a lot of bugs and fish) but one of the entries is for patricia, the royal sand seal. i would not have ever thought to take a picture of the named sand seal, i'm sorry game but that's a bit obtuse.
-
making
not much progress on the cross stitch or job fronts, but since i finally have a balcony, i planted peas and beans from @shiny-good-rock and basil from @morrak than have been languishing in a box for several years, the basil had an okay germination rate so my fingers are crossed re: peas and beans.
i am a bit annoyed about marigolds. maybe it's a bit too early for them here, or maybe they're not as popular as they were in the northeast? i tried like five different big box stores and indie nurseries, only one indie nursery had any and they were very pest-ridden. i would like marigolds, as friends for my tomatoes.
it is currently 11:40 PM CST as i type this so tomorrow i'll add something with a garden layout and what varieties i planted.

breath of the wild as evermore
if you’re up on your taylor swift lore, you know folklore and evermore are considered “sister albums” - both written and recorded during the pandemic, released five months apart, with a shared “cinematic universe” of sorts, and both characterized by taylor as getting lost in the woods (artistically) and staying there for a while. all of that is true, but if folklore is a lush forest in summer or high fall, evermore is a forest in late winter - the trees are bare, the world is quieter, and all around are signs of death and decay; yet even still, peeking out from the snow are hints of life returning, of nature in all its persistence gearing up to bloom again.
like MM, BOTW is a game about dealing with the apocalypse, but while in MM that apocalypse is imminent, in BOTW it’s a few generations past, still in living memory for some (like the zora) but for the most part the formative shadow under which the people of the world were raised and which society is just starting to emerge from. (this is a real sidebar, but i’ve always thought MM and BOTW were the zelda games most visibly influenced by ff7; in MM, with the moon hanging over the world, akin to meteor in disc 3; in BOTW, i see the final shot of midgar’s ruins overtaken by nature in every corner of hyrule.) but botw isn’t evermore just because it’s a sister to mm/folklore. evermore is an album of aching grief, not just for things lost but for potentials never realized, for “could-have-beens” that never were, for longing after that which was once in your reach but no longer is; “we could just ride around / and the road not taken looks real good now.” i think the champions’ fates are among the most haunting of any zelda characters; they were all brilliant and talented, in their primes, leaders in their communities, brave and true with full lives ahead of them, and they all died horribly, trapped and alone. whether or not mipha’s feelings for link were requited or not, she’ll never know, and link will never have the chance to respond one way or another; “i guess i’ll never know / and you’ll go on with the show”.
evermore is also an album about figuring out who you are (or are going to be) after a loss: “and in the disbelief / i can’t face reinvention/ i haven’t met the new me yet.” in botw, this theme is prevalent on both an individual and a societal level; link spends the game both learning who he was before and who he is now, through finding old memories and through making new ones, and likewise hyrule is rebuilding itself, trying to figure out what it’s going to become, but that future kingdom hasn’t quite taken shape yet (nor have it’s tears- sorry for the pun, i’ll stop now). “there is happiness / past the blood and bruise / past the curses and cries / beyond the terror in the nightfall.” yet people are relentless in their persistence, their determination to keep going, to create life out of a wasteland of death; and through the tarreytown quests the game makes you a party to this, makes you and link engage with the way humanity refuses to be stamped out. “oh, i can’t / stop you putting roots in my dreamland / my house of stone, your ivy grows / and now i’m covered in you.”
here’s the part where i say, full disclosure: i played BOTW in the weeks before and months after my grandmother’s death, and for me that game is inextricably tied to my grief. on evermore, taylor has a song grieving her grandmother (see “marjorie”, pack tissues). i don’t believe that’s why i think evermore is BOTW, and i think i’ve proven that here, but it’s be naive of me to think there’s no connection going on in my subconscious because of that.
another difference between MM/folklore and BOTW/evermore is in the pacing; even though both albums are roughly the same length, folklore feels very tightly paced, extremely sonically coherent, with one clear central vision. evermore is a bit more meandering, more experimental, more willing to sit in silence and sadness and watch the frozen landscape for a while. it still plays with different characters and fictional storylines (and like in MM, link/the player spends a lot of BOTW in the role of observer), but they’re not as interwoven as those on folklore; likewise, in BOTW the characters are spread far and wide across hyrule instead of largely gathered in clocktown, their lives are far less intertwined, and while the NPCs do all have scheduled trajectories of sorts they’re far less strict or significant than those of MM. (also of note; while in folklore, the “teenage love triangle” of songs - cardigan, august, and betty, each from the point of view of a different character from the same love triangle - has resolution, a degree of closure, and some real catharsis on “betty”, the evermore equivalent, ‘tis the damn season and dorothea, have no resolution or closure or catharsis of any kind. unfulfilled, just like the champions’ lives and potential.)
all of these themes and ideas are also summed up within one BOTW character: zelda. unfulfilled potential is the name of the game with her, as she’s constantly told she’s a failure for her inability to unlock her powers, while also being shut off from all her research, her potential as a scholar and any potential discoveries her passion could have led her to, and any lives that knowledge might have saved. (in age of calamity, we learn that zelda’s research into technology could and would have been able to save at least some lives, but the canon of that game is questionable, and regardless BOTW zelda doesn’t know any of that because it never happened; she’s just left with the possibility that maybe she could have uncovered something, but no certainty.) zelda’s grief goes without saying, as we see her breaking down in flashbacks, and her longing - for her powers, to be a scholar, to not be a princess, to be free of the burden of prophecy - is everywhere. (not to mention, the game opens with link hearing zelda’s voice but unable to reach her; whether you interpret their relationship as romantic or not, the whole game is framed with a longing for something you can’t reach). and the persistence of hyrule in surviving and rebuilding despite the calamity is reflected in zelda’s persistence in holding ganon at bay for a whole century; and, in the “true ending” scene you get for unlocking all the memories, we see her already making plans for hyrule, for where to go next and how to move forward.
there’s a lot more i could say, but i’ll end with the final track of evermore, fittingly named “evermore”, which i think sums up the themes of this game so well: “and i couldn’t be sure / but i had a feeling so peculiar / this pain wouldn’t be for / evermore.”
addendum: ah, crap, i meant to write something about the champion’s abilities as representation for still feeling the presence of loved ones after they’ve passed, and “if i didn’t know better / i’d think you were still around / i know better / but i still feel you all around”… ah well, it’s long enough as it is

my (few) gripes w totk so far:
- where did all the sheikah stuff go?? guardians, shrines, towers?? divine beasts??? i know at least in a few places there’re big pits o gloom where they used to be but in most places they’re just gone. at least like,, a few lines from purah or something about how “after their purpose was served in saving the world from calamity ganon, almost all of the ancient technology of the sheikah began to deteriorate into nothing” or something. “the gloom emanating from beneath hyrule castle broke it all down super easily.” so far there’s been barely any reference to them
- feel like you should be able to get a few more weapon slots from hetsu, especially considering the lengths you have to go to to get access to him again once he ups and goes back to lost woods :/ (if you know you know)
- the tarreytown side adventure with hudson’s daughter being shipped to gerudo town “to live in accordance with gerudo law that women aren’t allowed to interact with men until they come of age” feels super fucking. i don’t have the right words for it. but scummy comes to mind. i haven’t gone to that corner of the map yet and now i’m dreading to see what other like.... fetishization(?) is gonna happen.
- idk if it’s my controllers being funny or the game’s issue but i feel like i have to really pull back on the joystick to make the horses slow; i feel bad having to do a jerking kind of stop, but so often i try to get them to slow their pace and they just don’t :(
- the hands!!!! far too scary too spooky 4 me. don’t like, do not subscribe, and unfollow. stop lookin at me

More Link/Kohga Fluff! "A Good Heart".
Kohga headed away from the noise and chatter of the stable, taking refuge in the quiet of the small, wooded grove nearby. He sighed as he pulled back his hood, enjoying the cool comfort of the shade. He and Link had traveled to this area to gather food and some supplies that Tarreytown couldn't provide. While a small garden at home had provided some things that they'd normally have to travel to get, Link had wanted some Hylian mushrooms and other items that were easier to find in the wooded areas, and after teaching Kohga what to look for, the former Yiga leader had slipped away. He hated to admit it but being around people still made him nervous, even with Link by his side. Double checking that his supply bag was secured over his shoulder, he shifted his crutch and began walking, sharp eyes on the lookout for that tell-tale orange color. Stopping to pick some Hyrule herbs that he spotted, he tensed as movement caught the corner of his eye. Pulling his hood back up, he slipped beside one of the trees, watching as the grass rustled. Wait, that's too small to be a person, he realized. A soft rustling sound and as he watched, a small creature that looked like a tree branch come to life popped up from the grass. It's face, or mask, he wasn't sure, was a leaf with holes placed for eyes and a mouth. In what could be considered its hand, was a stick with dried berries. These rattled playfully as it waddled a few steps forward. "Koa? You here?" Link called out, using the nickname he had picked for Kohga when they were around other people. At the sound of his voice, the little creature darted back into the grass. Kohga wasn't sure but he could have sworn he heard it giggle. "Y-Yeah, over here." Kohga called back. As Link joined him, Kohga saw the creature peek out. It squeaked happily at seeing Link and let out a chirping sound. There was another rattle and a second one, with a butterfly shaped face and a sleepy look appeared. They chittered at each other, giggling softly. "Link, what are those things?" Kohga asked. Link looked over and the Koroks burst into giggles, running into the grass. "Oh, those are Koroks, forest spirits. Wait, you can see them?!" Link's face lit up with excitement. He crouched down, guiding Kohga gently down with him. The two Koroks came out as Link softly called out, and coming over, they trilled at the pair. "I've never seen them before," Kohga said, "is it rare to see them?" "It's incredibly rare for people to be able to see them." Link put his arm around him, leaning against his shoulder. "But it proves what I've known this whole time." "What's that?" "You have a good heart."

Hello! I have been following your tweets for the past two days, and have come to the conclusion you do not deserve to have Raymond on your island. He is my comfort character and seeing him in an environment not meant for him brings me anxiety, so I will be expecting a reply to this DM when you have him in boxes and ready to relinquish him to someone who will treasure him like he deserves.
No, No, no - it's spelt raymond luxury Yacht, but it's pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove.. Find out why you are not progressing in life and death from respiratory failure, DIZZINESS, anxiety, confusion DROWSINESS, nausea and VOMITING

Trying to do more objects + landscapes instead of defaulting on characters, so here's Tarrey Town. I love this kind of quest where you get to see something change and grow because of your progress.

Link/Kohga fluff pieces for the hell of it.
I like writing these two and whipped these up.
"When was the last time you cut your hair?"
Kohga tilted his head back, staring up at Link. The swordsman was seated on a stool with Kohga on the floor between his legs. Link had been combing and playing with his hair, leaving a braid that now hung down by Kohga's right ear. "It's been a while. You don't like it long?" Kohga asked. Link chuckled, curling the midnight black strands around his fingers. "I think it looks good on you." He got up and in one swift motion, was now in Kohga's lap, straddling him. "Besides," he leaned in and began leaving kisses along the other's neck, "I like having something to run my fingers through."
Link headed back towards the Tarreytown gateway, the bag that was slung over his shoulder now filled with food for the week. As he often did, Kohga was seated near the gate, waiting on him. Link was surprised to see his hood was pulled back, his face calm as he focused on something. Getting closer, Link saw he was holding a brown tabby cat in his lap, gently scratching its chin. "I didn't think you liked animals," Link commented. He had seen Kohga grow nervous around the dogs that were in town, actively trying to avoid them when he walked with Link. "I always liked cats," Kohga replied. "They're fascinating little things. We kept desert cats at the hideout to keep rats away from the food. I had a couple that would come in and nap with me or sit by me when I'd read aloud to the other Yiga." The little cat jumped down with a 'mew' and padded off. "Really missed those lil guys when I was in the Depths." Kohga said softly. Link hummed to himself, an idea in the back of his mind. A few days later, Kohga found a wrapped package on the table with his name on a little card. 'Kohga, I know it can't replace the real thing, but I hope this makes you smile. L.' Opening it, he pulled out a small, wooden cat. Link later found it sitting proudly in the center of the hearth with the card tucked safely under it's paws.
"Are you sure about this? I never did learn to swim." Kohga said. Link took his hands in his and stepped backwards, guiding him into the pool. "It'll only come up to your chest at the deepest part and I'll be right beside you," he said, "you'll be fine."
It was a hot summer's day and Link had coaxed Kohga into traveling to a nearby pool with a small waterfall to cool off. Both had changed out of their clothes and into short cut pants to wade into the water. Kohga shuddered with pleasure as the cool water wrapped around his skin. Link let out a soft laugh. "I told you you'd like it." Letting go of his hands, Link slipped under the waterfall, tilting his head back. Kohga couldn't help but stare as the water streamed down the younger man's body, making his golden hair cling to his face and neck. Stepping out, Link brushed the water from his eyes and caught the look on Kohga's face. He smirked playfully. "Like what you see?" he teased. Kohga let out a playful growl and lunging, grabbed him by the waist. Link put his arms around his neck and wrapped his legs around him. "I'll take that as a 'yes'." he said as they met in a kiss.
