Upright: sometimes we need to take a step back from everyone around us and withdrawl within, in order to take stock of self. Being alone can provide a quiet sanctuary to resettle into a new self, or to find ourselves for the first time.

Inversed: Be wary you don't let your personal studies and private time become isolationist. For all our preferences, humans are pack animals, and whether your pack is many or few, contact with others is incredibly important.

If you find this card inversed after a period of isolation, whether self imposed or culturally encouraged, REACH OUT. Your pack has missed you, it's time to return.

EIGHT OF CUPS

our card today is the Eight of Cups, which parallels the four in that it attempts to impart some sort of stability over the governing attribute of the Cups (emotion). In this case, the "stability" comes from the rote predictability of toxic emotional cycles. I'm thinking of the constant pattern of highs and lows in emotional situations that have become abusive or otherwise detrimental-- whether they come from personal relationships, jobs, or anything, really! While these negative thought loops can feel safe and familiar even in their painful repetition, i think they're best to ultimately avoid. This card optimistically points towards the querant abandoning their current emotional spirals, hopefully to find better things! Here, the cups become the cages from which one must break free. Perhaps a little abstract, as cups go, but it's the only suit to include vessels.

First draft of The Star as I work on it.

The Star is the first of the celestial trio, the hope that comes directly after (or perhaps from) The Tower card immediately before. It's a twinkle of light guiding you forward through the dark. It is hope rooted in hardship, it is hard won courage. Together, stars make a constellation- a God, hero, or story.

Weekly tarot reading: Ace of Pentacles (reversed) and 8 of Cups–a message about a lost opportunity and abandoning your initial plans. Not an easy reading…but it’s important, too!

The Ace of Pentacles reversed tends to signify you have, or are about to, miss a significant opportunity. This is usually something that triggers scarcity–so examine what that might be based on what triggers your own scarcity (for instance, a work opportunity and financial scarcity, a chronic illness setback and health scarcity, etc).

The Eight of Cups, though, adds on a message that it is actually important to abandon this opportunity. It might seem like something that was good for you (extra money, extra fun!)...but in the long run it will burn you out. You’re the one who needs to turn your back on this situation.

Together, these cards are saying this is an opportunity that needs to be missed–not one you’re overlooking and should have taken. Conscious abandonment in this way is a healthy boundary setting technique. This fits with the theme of not overdoing it that has come up in a lot of cards this month!
