"ECHO OF HIDE CASE," Hamilton Spectator. April 23, 1913. Page 10. ---- A sequel to the recent sentence of the Brooks brothers to penitentiary by Judge Monck the other week, on a charge of stealing hides from Wilham Stroud's tannery, was commenced with the issuance of a writ by Kerr & Thomson in the high court, for the recovery of $1,650.30, from Thornton's Limited. The amount represents the value of the hides stolen from the plaintiff's tannery. It has been alleged by the plaintiff the stolen hides were received by Thornton's Limited, but the latter claim they have no means of showing the hides received from the Brooks brothers came from the Stroud tannery.

Tanners at the Chouara Tannery have been transforming animal hides into leather since the 11th century. The tanning process has gone unchanged since then, but it relies on heavy chemicals that threaten the health of workers. Some say they are not willing to take that risk. We traveled to the world’s oldest leather tannery in Fez, Morocco, to find out how this ancient craft is still standing.

Day 24 of Bookbinding: A Visit to a Tannery

Today, I went to New York with my mother to visit Pergamena, a family business dating back to the 16th century that specialize in leather, and more recently, parchment. We got to see the innerworkings of a tannery, and how they made their leather and parchment. It was a wonderful experience, and I learned a great deal about the process. We also got to see lots of different parchment up close, and we were showed the difference between varying types of parchment sources. It was incredibly informative, and I plan to bind with some leather from Pergamena in the future (not within this project, but future bookbinding endeavors.)
