How to manage this: If you do end up choosing to do online therapy, make sure you set up your own boundaries about when to access this because unlike other therapy formats, you can use the room 24/7 to drop thoughts. It doesn’t mean that this will always be good.

Online therapy update: I think this is week three of doing online therapy? This time it's working a lot better than last time. I think last time I was experiencing something much more acute, like I was in need of IMMEDIATE help and a lot more attention, and more frequent sessions that were face to face/ synchronous, even though I'm not a huge fan of talking. This time around it's more about lighter stressors. Like, lmao maybe not 'lighter' stressors, but more like daily stressors is why I'm seeking help. Vs. trying to untangle trauma from experiencing ongoing abuse, which is much more complex because I'm still IN the situation and needed more safety planning, resources, and getting the fuck out.

What I learned is that therapists lack cultural competency regardless of platform and this lack of training is part of a bigger problem.

alright losers I've used up all three sessions of free therapy graciously granted me by my insurance from my corporate overlords and it fixed absolutely none of my very real and pressing problems relating to mental health and poverty so back to screaming into the void you know how it is lol
Anyway, here are some of the very real things this corporate therapy queen really said to me (paraphrased)— me: I need medication. her: Are you sure you can afford it? me: Actually good point. No. No I can't. her: you should try talking to your parents about the weather. me: what part of 'I just had to block my dad's number because he was threatening and harassing me' did you miss? me: I'm having a really bad meltdown day. Depression off the charts. Paranoia is kicking in. Anxiety attack. It's been bad. I just need someone to reach out to and I can never get anyone to answer my calls and even if I could I don't want to burden my friends. Man I really need meds or something. But at least I have my dogs. her: That's good. See, you have your dogs! me: my dogs are all I have. That's kind of a problem don't you think? her: Sounds like your dogs comfort you. me: Total bummer I have to leave them at home to work 8-14 hours a day in order to fulfill the contract that currently grants me a place to live. me: yeah idk if I have autism but I struggle a lot, especially at work, with people perceiving that I'm slightly 'off.' But at least I have one disabled coworker who gets me. her: tell me about your coworker. me: *goes off on a rant talking about my wonderful coworker* her: That's nice. me: I like to write. It's helped me cope with a lot of issues since way back in high school. A lot of my stress with my current work situation comes from the fact that I can't get away and pursue writing or my comic. her: I can tell you're a really good writer! You should pursue that! me:.... mkay. her: we had a good conversation didn't we BYE lol

Hey if any one has ever been curious about online therapy I finally bit the bullet and signed up today and they have a pretty banging friends and family discount. The one I signed up for is 276$ /mo but if you go through the link you get 200$ off. I just wanted the messaging service (audio, visual, text) so if you want live sessions it's more. No sweat just wanted to offer it in case anyone else was on the fence like I was. Sorry if this annoys you

Looking back, I realized that just because they respond twice a day, and just because it’s part of the plan, doesn't mean you have to rush to respond twice a day, every day, always.

Now I share my story so that therapists and therapists-to-be can see this and better prepare themselves to work with POC clients and to see that sometimes these clients come in with a different perspective. Please read this if you fall in that boat.

I also really loved the video aspect because often you don’t really get to get a snapshot into what a therapist is like before you meet them in flesh for the first time, and if the fit isn’t right, it’s a full hour session of discomfort.
