spoiler warning for the manga orange!
the last manga I read was orange (currently watching the anime). it is such a beautiful story and the entire time I was reading it I was alternating between rooting for the main couple, laughing at the friendship moments, and some sadness over the general struggles of the plot (also some internal raging because DAMMIT NAHO JUST TELL HIM HOW YOU FEEL).
one of my favorite things about this manga, though, is how suwa was genuinely ready to throw away the whole future he had the chance to have because he wanted his friend to live. in the original timeline, he got to marry naho, who he was in love with from the beginning.
this man loved naho, but went out of his way to try to get naho and suwa together because he knew they loved each other and he cared a lot about kakeru. he cared about both of them SO MUCH throughout the series and it’s so blatant in all of his interactions with them.
honestly, I feel suwa is so much better at showing how much he loves his friends than any of the main characters. obviously we know they love each other, but he’s the one who goes out of his way to comfort them, hug them, encourage them, etc. dammit, he’s hugged kakeru more than naho! he was the one who hugged kakeru when he was crying in their classroom.
don’t get me wrong, im not saying at all that he loved kakeru more than naho. it’s a huge thing with her and kakeru’s dynamic that they both are awful at showing how they truly feel and opening up, and that’s one of the beautiful things about this story in my opinion. they both worked hard to be able to tell each other how they feel, as that was one of naho’s biggest regrets.
it was just very noticeable to me that he seemed to be the most helpful and kind friend of the group, and also the most selfless when it comes to his own personal effects to pushing them together.
ugh I just love this boy and his love for his friends. he’s just so genuinely kind and it’s such a beautiful part of this story.

REVIEW ISSUE #1: MANGA - Orange
CW / TW: Suicide Mentions
Genre
Orange is a Japanese Romance Manga by Ichigo Takano. It fits the shoujo and seinen genre, aimed at a younger audience (similar to YA fiction in English). Basic Summary:
Naho Takamiya, a second-year high school student living in Matsumoto, receives a letter from herself 10 years in the future. The letter urges her to prevent her “biggest regrets” in her past, Naho’s current present. Her regrets revolve around a new transfer student, Kakeru Naruse, and his suicide on Valentine’s day the same year; he later reveals that, because he stayed with his new friends (Naho’s current friendgroup consisting of Hiroto Suwa, Takako Chino, Saku Hagita, and Azusa Murasaka), he had not been present to prevent his mother from commiting suicide- an event which very obviously haunts him. Suwa later reveals that he, too, received a letter from himself in the future with a message to prevent Kakeru’s death, and confronts Naho about it. One by one, Suwa, Naho, Chino, Hagita, and Murasaka reveal that they all received letters, and they decide that together, they will make Kakeru’s life better and prevent him from passing.
Suwa keeps his own feelings for Naho secret once he realizes that Naho and Kakeru like each other- especially since, in his own mind, this may be the key to saving Kakeru. Naho and Kakeru get into a fight on New Year’s Eve, becoming distant. Once Kakeru does not arrive to a group plan on time, the friends rush to where Kakeru is supposed to commit suicide- there, they find him having backed out of his plan once he realized that it would mean he’d never see his friends again.
Thoughts
The manga adequately balances slice-of-life with a sci-fi / future aspect and a sort of savior plotline. Despite being described as a romance manga, the romantic plots feel as if they were instead a subplot to the ‘save Kakeru’ plotline, even though they are entangled heavily. The characters read as their age, and it's interesting to see the differences between the "present" group of friends and the "future" group of friends, as well as how things change as they follow the letters and make decisions to save Kakeru. On the topic of the differences between the “future” and the “present”; often during the events of the story, there is input from the “future” friend group. The jump between the future group and the present group is sometimes confusing, only because at the end of a scene it pops out of nowhere with no real prompt for a flashback/flash forward, and the characters look very much the same from either timeline. However, that could also be my personal struggle with reading time skips and such in comics or manga.
The only other "complaint" I have is the fact that, at least for a good chunk of the series, saving Kakeru is based in his romantic relationship with Naho- in reality, romantic relationships can certinly help feelings of suicide and worthlessness, but more than that is the friendships and closeness the person struggling has with others. Of course, they're high schoolers, so it is accurate to that sort of immature "I need someone to love me" view that high schoolers often have. Additionally, the love triangle and struggle between Naho and Suwa is out of place in certain areas- Suwa sometimes goes back on his word and confesses his feelings for Naho, despite his conviction not to in order to keep Naho and Kakeru's relationship alive. Suwa also deliberately hides the fact that they are married in the future, despite the rest of the group knowing this, and this knowledge comes up more than once as if it is a deep internal struggle, yet it is not outwardly addressed in any way.
The fact that the love triangle between Suwa, Naho, and Kakeru, and the relationship between Naho and Kakeru is what makes this manga ‘romance’ seem... odd. Like I mentioned before, the fact that Naho being in a relationship is what’s supposedly ‘saving’ Kakeru from suicide is portraying love as the cure to suicidal thoughts, depression, and possibly even more struggles. The key here is friendship and social relationships, not necessarily romantic love- but the romance plot is what's emphasized. Looking closely, one can see the problem with that. Additionally, the love-triangle also just adds a struggle that isn’t needed. Yes, Suwa is struggling with his feelings, which paints him as a more dynamic character, but he should be able to do that on his own and with his close friends instead of possibly meddling with another’s relationship and, in this particular circumstance, someone’s life.
I do wish that we looked more in depth at the letters given to each character, similar to how we looked at Naho's. I also wish we had a chance to discover the future group's dynamic outside of them sending the letters or reflecting on their past as it changed in the others' present- their world is different from the main storyline’s world, and seeing those differences may have had a larger impact on the audience rather than them just having the knowledge that the differences were significant. Despite this, the shortness of the story and the main events giving just enough detail for the reader to put two-and-two together is a staple here; it makes for a good read if you’re just looking for a nice, semi-short feel-good story with romantic tones.
Rating
It was a good read, and definitely well written with a realistic plot progression and dynamic characters, however it doesn't necessarily stand out in my mind. My personal taste in romance works is a little more drawn out than this, plus I do take issue with the fact that Naho’s romance is what’s emphasized to be saving Kakeru from his death- speaking as a person with similar feelings to Kakeru, it is important to work on yourself and your problems- NOT delve into a romantic relationship and think it will be the thing that saves you.
As a general rating, I would recommend this- especially if you enjoy a semi-short romance with a feel-good ending. 8/10
As a personal rating, I don’t think I would keep this in my collection. Nothing about it stands out to me other than the originality of the story, and the fact that it was a short enough read to satisfy. 6/10

I just finished watching the Orange anime. And I am in literal tears. I had no idea something like this existed, like !!!!! how???
Orange was so beautiful from start to finish, just absolutely stunning. The characters, the art, the story. It had it all.
Orange’s portrayal of friendship was so realistic and beautiful, it bought me to literal tears. And i’ve never seen any anime do as a good of a job portraying mental illnesses as well as Orange. It really showed how hard it is for victims of mental illnesses to slowly get over things, even when everything is well.
Just AAAAH!
Also even though we didn’t get much screen time for all the characters, like Hagita or Azusa, they were still very well constructed with their own personalities and motivations.
In the end you all should watch Orange, because it’s beautiful and grossly underrated.
