Hi my name is Edony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way and I have a long ebony black beard (that’s how I got my name) and long hair with grey streaks and grey tips that reaches my mid-back and deep brown eyes like limpid bears and a lot of people tell me I look like Taika Waititi (AN: if u don’t know who he is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Gerard Way but I wish I was because he’s a major fucking hottie. I’m a vampire but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale brown skin. I’m also a pirate, and sail around on a ship called the Revenge in the Caribbean where I’m the Captain (I’m forty-seven). I’m a goth (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly black. I love Hot Topic and I steal all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black leather jacket with one sleeve and black leather gloves and black leather trousers, and black combat boots. I was wearing black eyeliner and black eye shadow and some black in my beard. I was walking outside the deck on the Revenge. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of preps stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.

“Hey Edony!” shouted a voice. I looked up. It was…. Stede Bonnet!

“What’s up Stede?” I asked.

“Nothing.” he said shyly.

But then, I heard my friends call me and I had to go away.

anyway, I just turned in my paper that ive been working on for the last few months (yay, finally, it ate like all of my free time and energy) and suddenly I have too much free time and not much too read or watch (I had saved so many fics I cant manage to read anymore)

oh boy ok coming of age recs I can do this. I haven't read any coming of age books since I was a teenager though so keep in my my memory of these are all hazy

books:

the perks of being a wallflower by stephen chbosky - hallmarker of the coming of age genre, read this when I was 16 and cried, even if you've seen the movie I highly recommend the book

aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe by benjamin alire saenz - literally was one of my favorite books for so many years. I read it when I was 15 and became obsessed with it. I still look back on it so warmly it's just such a great book

it's kind of a funny story by ned vizzini - also read this one when I was like 16ish. I remembered enjoying it but not as much as the other two I've listed here. still very good though!

movies:

cha cha real smooth (2022) - actually one of my favorite coming of age films I've ever seen. it's a coming of age film about a guy in his early 20s instead of in his teens which is refreshing in its own. it hit particularly hard for me because I saw it when I was 22 and freshly graduated from college unsure what to do, the main character is 22 and freshly graduated from college unsure what to do. it's also a very unique setup and I really loved how they pulled it off

the edge of seventeen (2016) - this might be a controversial pick because the main character is actually pretty insufferable in this, but that's part of why I enjoyed it. the character is meant to be insufferable. she's a teenage girl dealing with the hell of being a teenage girl and she sucks! it's an intentional thing and it does it very well! I would say it still falls flat in some areas, but I'm mainly recommending it because it's so refreshing to have an mc genuinely be a shitty person

sing street (2016) - I count this as a coming of age movie but it's also kind of a music movie? it's incredibly fun no matter what. the songs are so catchy, the characters are all great, and the relationships are just all very well done

the kings of summer (2013) - genuinely why do I never hear anyone talk about this movie. I haven't seen it in so long but I remember it being incredibly funny with a great dose of summertime whimsy

hunt for the wilderpeople (2016) - tbh I never thought of this as a coming of age movie and it might be a bit different than most of the films on here but I was looking up lists of coming of age movies to try and remember which ones I've seen and I saw this one mentioned a few times. if you're a fan of taika waititi films, in my opinion this is his best one hands down. it's hilarious but also incredibly sweet and heartwarming at the same time

moonrise kingdom (2012) - very charming and storybook esque in the way all wes anderson films are, but with a really sweet story between two kids at its core. again, different from most of the ones on this list, but definitely an enjoyable one all the same

I just saw your post about ofmd. I used to love it too, but I hated the fans and I don't fuck w zionists so I'm out of that fandom now.

But one thing I didn't know was that the fans were racist. Do you mind me asking what they said/did that was regarded as racist? Or just something you can vaguely remember?

I'm just curious is all. I was never overly involved with the fanbase, so I never saw anything like that.

hi!! been trying to think for a while on how to answer this. i was under a lot of fire from ofmd fans for a little while so i decided to wait to answer it anyways. i want to disclaim that i'm a pretty white-passing ojibwe kid, meaning i'm native american; all my commentary on the anti-indigenous (and other) racism i saw in the ofmd fandom is not from a maori perspective, rather just a colonized indigenous one in general. there's also the topic of the historical characters portrayed in the show being slaveowners and this being entirely glossed over in the show - which i can't really effectively speak on, other than to say it's disgusting. there is a lot of good writing on media like hamilton and ofmd that just almost completely erase slavery, but i'm not really equipped to write about it.

anyways!!! most of my issues with other people in the ofmd fandom came from their treatment of the character ed teach. now i used to like taika waititi before all this nonsense cause he was an indigenous filmmaker and i'm indigenous and want to be a filmmaker and i thought it was neat that he did what he did. i was super excited to see a Very Popular Show have an indigenous lead whose character was actually indigenous not just ambiguously brown!! and so when i came to the ofmd fandom i sort of expected other people to feel the same - not the case, to say the least. i saw no shortage of white fans writing fic about stede "civilizing" ed (the actual word that most people used) and people writing essays on how ed is abusive and izzy hands was uniquely his innocent (white) victim, and giving white characters this level of grace that ed was not afforded. and i think (couldn't tell you whether this is still accurate as i haven't seen s2 and i never will) a theme of his character was meant to be moral complexity, only white fans can't handle a morally complex character of color, especially not an indigenous one with complex relationships to white characters that they liked better. all the meta i read about ed teach that was written by anyone who wasn't indigenous just completely ignored his indigeneity like it had nothing to do with his character's written place in the world, like any oppression or disrespect ed received was as a result of being poor, or being a pirate, or being (no joke) uniquely aggressive and prone to violence (thus deserving it).

this is just a surface level of the way people talked and wrote about ed teach - racism all over. then, if i or any other fan who was a poc tried to speak up about it, there'd be outcry of puritanism and not letting people have fun and being too sensitive and immature for a fandom space. (although, there's something almost poetically hilarious about me, a 17 yr old, being told i'm too immature, by the same 30 some year olds who are now putting all their money towards their slaveownder rpf show instead of a real cause, let's not get into that, though!) i've not been in a lot of fandoms in my life, i kind of prefer to just enjoy things by myself and tell my close friends about it, but i can confidently say that ofmd was the most racist fandom i've ever been in, and the most hostile to fans of color. (and i was a homestuck fan!!!!) for a show that tries to pride itself on diversity, and a (largely white) fanbase who thinks that Consuming the Diversity Show makes them a Morally Good Person, the way i and plenty of others were treated by holier-than-thou white ofmd fans is just appalling. it's the worst fandom i've ever ever been in, bar none!!! and i think going forward if i like something i'm probably just going to stick to myself about it, honestly.

so, Chris Hemsworth and Taika Waititi are seemingly going out of their way to ignore Loki’s huge presence in Thor’s life--like, they were completely dismissive when asked in an interview what it was like to do a Thor movie without Loki, and they just did a new spot summarizing Thor’s MCU arc in 30 seconds and apparently (I say because I haven’t tried that hard to find it and watch it myself, mostly because I’m pretty sure it’ll just irritate me more) didn’t mention Loki once, which is...really challenging the whole benefit of the doubt I was trying to have about both of them in response to some over-the-top hate here, in terms of them not actually being assholes about Loki’s character and about Tom as a person. because, you know, it kind of seems like Hemsworth in particular is getting absolutely everything he ever wanted where Thor is concerned, and he’s...I dunno, still jealous that Loki and Tom also have fans, or something?

my fondest wish is that every single review says something, even in passing, about missing Tom’s presence. it would make me feel better, and also it would serve them both right for being...ungenerous. sadly I realize that’s pretty unlikely.

anyway, embarrassing as it is to admit, I’m kind of tempted to write a straight-up character-bashing fic where Thor is every bit as awful as some people in the Loki fandom have been saying he and Hemsworth are, because it might be sort of satisfying, but I’m almost certainly not going to do that because a) I don’t like character-bashing fics, b) I actually did mostly like Ragnarok, and c) that would be a lot of effort that would not actually make me feel better, because it would just be a lot of time spent dwelling on the negative when I could be doing literally anything else, like focusing on Loki + portrayals of Thor I do like

In regards tp the light/dark stories, I think you can have a good balance. I personally love darker stories with some levity. Think "Hunt for the Wilder People" or "Jojo Rabbit"... I guess pretty much any Taika Waititi movie. I'm personally not a huge fan of the grimdark Pokemon fics (unless it's a comic with really pleasing art) but I guess I do see the appeal. It's a franchise made for a younger audience and all of the original fans (myself included, my first game was og Gold) are in their late 20's and 30's and kind of want a more mature story, not to say that only dark stories are mature. Pokemon has a lot of potential for a darker, more mature story. I kind of forgot where I was going with this, but I guess that's my 2 cents??

That’s pretty much why I’ve assumed that darker content is being made; the original audiences are older now, having grown up with Pokémon, and are making content that they like for the franchises they still appreciate! And as you said, it can sometimes be more mature content, but that doesn’t always mean that it’s dark. As mentioned before, Pokémon does leave a lot of implication for mature things, and older audiences are able to take those implications and flesh them out - and they do a good job doing it!

Media: Our Flag Means Death

Year/my age: 2022/32

What drew me to the media:

God, here we go. This was such a blip in time for me, and I'm so glad I moved on quickly. What drew me to the media was the fucking gay, okay? It was the gay. I heard that Taika Waititi was in a gay pirate drama comedy, and I said, "yes, please, I'll watch that."

I was a brand new stay-at-home mother with twins. I was cracked out of my fucking gourd. If you think this is awfully apologetic for some stupid fandom, you're right, but I am very embarrassed I participated even for a second.

It's a cute show. Is it an amazing show? No. Is it super duper funny? No. I honestly think the writing of What We Do in the Shadows is better. I like Taika as a writer better than an actor (even though he is very pretty). I also like pirates a lot, and the historical queerness of pirates is an often untouched upon phenomena. I think like everything in our tired, internet gay community, people went way to fucking far with it as a infallible crucible straight from the mouth of god, and ruined it.

What made me a fan:

It was cute and bored. I downloaded the videos for free. Then I got a trial of HBO max and watched it for free. I thought it was darling. I liked the pining. The kiss was very cute and special. That's it. I was really invested in making sure a season 2 was renewed, and it pissed me off every day it wasn't (this was during the HBO merger that killed all the cartoons, yikes).

I farted around on Ao3 enjoying some Izzy kink fics, because he's a hot little grumpy muppet with a good voice.

This was also just after I finished the latest draft of my original fiction novel, and my writing bone was bent out of shape and formless. I hadn't written anything but the novel for going on several months. So I wanted to fuck around in a borrowed world for a little bit.

Have I written fanfiction for it? Why or why not?

Yup! To practice getting into writing again, I wrote very quick chapters under 1K words to ease myself out of my novel. I got bored very quickly. I also wrote a Blackbeard/Calico Jack that included bad sex, inebriated sex, and toxic masculinity because I knew I could do these topics justice. I wrote the first 'Dalliances' fic, which is a hot button word from the show.

I was really into one of the giant fanfics, but sometimes in giant fandoms, fanfics do this thing where THEY CAN'T END. This frustrates me to no end. Finish the fucking story. Nononono don't suddenly start publishing chapters that are 20K words. Finish the fucking story. I swear to god, you are killing my interest in-- It's dead. I no longer want to read your story.

I've experienced this in a few fandoms. Like. Finish your story. I don't care how many hits you get and how that soothes your ego. Stories have endings. You need to shut the book and spiraling chapters make me very very unhappy as a reader.

Opinion on the fandom:

A mess. Do not interact with these people. I got out of it before it got bad but I have second hand burns from other people. It's a toxic waste dump. Do not enter this fandom.

Would I read it again?

Heh, depends what season two is like tbh.

Wee John looked down at the rag doll nestled snuggly between his forearm and belly. "Nah, haven't had 'em long. Found it in a trunk and just..." He blushed a little and looked away. "It's silly."

Frenchie looked at him with open curiosity. "Nah, mate -- what? It's adorable. Just thought if it was gonna be roommates with us, I should know its proper name. Just been callin' it 'Dolly' in my head, but that seems disrespectful if it's not her name. His name? Their?" He looked a bit like he was trying to do sums in his head.

Wee John furrowed his brow and mumbled, "Hadn't really thought about it. Never had a doll before."

"What, never? Not even when you were a wee lad?"

He scoffed. "Never was 'a wee lad'. Always been big and always had to act grown. I can't remember anyone ever treating me like a lad, not really."

It was Frenchie's turn to scowl. "You said you made dresses with your mum -- you never made the scraps into toys or nothin'? I had a rag doll my mum made from a walnut and a scrap of linen." A small smile lit his face at the memory.

"Oh, there was no time for any foolishness like that. Work, work, work, it was. Ten mouths to feed, and me the man of the house."

Frenchie's look of sympathy was confusing. Isn't that how it is for everyone who grows up to be a fuckin' pirate? Besides His Nibs, of course. "I get it, man. Still a shame though. Every kid deserves something of their own, just for fun."

Wee John thought he might cry, but he pushed it aside. "I suppose... I suppose I'd call her Sinéad, after my nan?"

Frenchie reached out to gently take the doll's hand and bowed ever so slightly. "Very pleased to make your acquaintance, Sinéad. Welcome to the room. But so's you know, the bed is for sleepin' and the nook --" he pointed to the corner "-- is only for sittin'."

Wee John held Sinéad's arm and shook Frenchie's hand for her. "Much obliged," he said in a voice higher than his own.

"Well, now that's settled," Frenchie grinned, "where exactly are we gettin' these mints?"

Tonight my kid (13??? for those keeping track at home) asked me what “slash fic” means. She was so, so, SO offended when I told her. Offended that there’s a special word for it.

We had an extremely interesting discussion about why you would need a word just for that, and what the fic and fandom landscape looked like before she was born.

Then I told her about the word “femslash” and she got EVEN MORE OFFENDED.

I think we landed on “well now if you say ‘fanfic’ people *assume* it’s gay, so CHECKMATE STRAIGHTS”

i like one piece & jojos

ive written harry potter (drarry) and one piece (zosan) fics in the past but they never did well/i never finished them/theyre just shit.

im a big fan of music. all music. kendrick lamar to the beatles to my chemical romance. i also like black sabbath if you couldnt tell. all of it. love that shit.

annnndddd as of recent ive been into ofmd & succession. ill eat up anything taika waititi puts out tbh. hes everything 2 me.

i think the last thing i should mention is my interest in streamers/youtubers. obviously my ao3 account is named schlatt but im actually a ludbud. im also aware of the dsmp but i stopped watching a bit after they had schlatt overdose on meth or whatever LMAO (not bc of that, its just the last thing i remember.)
