The concept of the taiji ("Supreme Ultimate"), in contrast with wuji ("without ultimate"), appears in both Taoist and Confucian philosophy, where it represents the fusion or mother[6] of yin and yang into a single ultimate, represented by the taijitu symbol . Tai chi theory and practice evolved in agreement with Chinese philosophical principles, including those of Taoism and Confucianism. Zou Yan (鄒衍; 305 BC – 240 BC) was a Chinese philosopher best known as the representative thinker of the Yin and Yang School (or School of Naturalists) during the Hundred Schools of Thought era in Chinese philosophy.
Taijiquan is a complete martial art system with a full range of bare-hand movement set and weapon forms as in the Taiji sword and Taiji spear based on the dynamic relationship between Yin and Yang.
While tai chi is typified by its slow movements, many styles (including the three most popular: Yang, Wu, and Chen) have secondary, faster-paced forms. Some traditional schools teach partner exercises known as tuishou ("pushing hands"), and martial applications of the postures of different forms (taolu).

Using Tai Chi Chuan to Build the Energy Body
Tai Chi Chuan isn't just for self defense purposes, once one gets past the need and want to protect oneself you get into building an 'energy body.' This is true for Yang Tai Chi Chuan, Chen Tai Chi Chuan, or whatever type of Taiji you happen to be enrolled in. You do have to follow specific guidelines relating to the energy anatomy. First, obviously, one must root our bodies. This is not only sinking the body weight; you have to close the eyes and direct your awareness through the feet and into the earth. This will enable you to develop a tractor beam that connects you to our planet. Second, you must shift our bodies back and forth while turning the hips. This results in a holistic motion which uses all of our bodies, rather than just an arm or even a leg. This must be finished with every motion you do within the form and the self defense techniques. Third, you should hold arms which can be curved but not capable to be bent throughout all postures. You can move the arms a little, forwards and backwards, inside and outside. Ilona will introduce the Push Hands form as taught by Cheng Man Ch’ing and explore the body mechanics of Tai Chi as developed by his student Grandmaster William CC Chen. Tai Chi Push Hands (Tui Shou) is the two person application of Tai Chi Chuan. As part of Tai Chi training, practicing push hands with a partner develops rooting, yielding, and issuing energy. As an approach to self defense, it is peaceful, safe, and effective. As a competitive game, it benefits all kinds of sparring athletes by training strength, stamina, sensitivity, and responsiveness within safe sets of rules for both fixed step and moving step push hands: contact is between the hips and the collarbone; no grabbing, striking, or joint locks are allowed. The objective is to uproot your opponent, or make them lose their balance, while maintaining your own root.

The Meaning And History of Taoism
Taoism is an ancient tradition of philosophy and religious belief that is deeply rooted in Chinese customs and worldview. Taoist ideas have become popular throughout the world through Tai Chi Chuan, Qigong, and various martial arts.
Taoism teaches a person to follow their breath, to embrace wonder and the joy in living gracefully with style. So here is the modern practical guide to living as a Taoist!
To many people, a confusing aspect of Taoism is its very definition. Many religions will happily teach a Philosophy/Dogma which in reflection defines a person. Taoism flips this around. It starts by teaching a truth; “The Tao” is indefinable. It then follows up by teaching that each person can discover the Tao in their own terms. A teaching like this can be very hard to grasp when most people desire very concrete definitions in their own life.
Generally speaking, there are two kinds of Taoism: philosophical and religious. Philosophical Taoism is rational, contemplative, and nonsectarian, and it accepts death as a natural returning to the Tao. Religious Taoism is magical, cultic, esoteric, and sectarian, and it emphasizes and healing as ways to gain long life or even immortality. T’ai chi and the medical practice of Quigong are modern manifestations of Taoism.
Taoism is about the Tao. This is usually translated as the Way. But it’s hard to say exactly what this means. The Tao is the ultimate creative principle of the universe. All things are unified and connected in the Tao.
Taoism originated in China 2000 years ago
It is a religion of unity and opposites; Yin and Yang. The principle of Yin Yang sees the world as filled with complementary forces – action and non-action, light and dark, hot and cold, and so on
The Tao is not God and is not worshipped. Taoism includes many deities, that are worshipped in Taoist temples, they are part of the universe and depend, like everything, on the Tao
Taoism promotes:
achieving harmony or union with nature
the pursuit of spiritual immortality
being ‘virtuous’ (but not ostentatiously so)
self-development
Taoist practices include:
meditation
feng shui
fortune telling
reading and chanting of scriptures
Before the Communist revolution fifty years ago, Taoism was one of the strongest religions in China. After a campaign to destroy non-Communist religion, however, the numbers significantly reduced, and it has become difficult to assess the statistical popularity of Taoism in the world.
Originally Taoism can be considered to be a shamanic practice. However, Taoism is so old; the complete history of Taoism cannot be traced through written records. Taoism is very much a tradition that is transmitted verbally from master to student over the generations. Because of this, some of the shamanic roots of Taoism still survive today. Taoism historically is also a very flexible practice. Taoism is a practice of change and it always changes to meet the needs of the times. This is still happening today and even as we speak Taoism is evolving to keep pace with modern culture. This is one reason Taoism has survived for so long, it always adapts with the time while holding onto a few key concepts to keep the practice true to the Tao.
A simply way to start learning the definition of Taoism is to start within yourself.
Here are some simple starting tips to help a person live as a Taoist.
Having a set of basic guidelines can be helpful. However realistically, guidelines don’t determine how to live; Instead Taoism teaches by living you will express your nature.My personal guidelines are the following:
With care, I aid those who are extended expressions of my nature.
Be true to myself
Connect to the world as I want to be treated.
Connect to those outside my nature with decisive action.
To those unwilling to accept me for my true nature, no action is required:
Just silently let them be themselves as I remain myself.
I own nothing; I am merely a passing custodian of items outside of my nature.
Discover a set of practices to aid keeping the mind, body and spirit engaged and strong. Remember practices should support your essence with the activities fitting the needs of the moment. Which means this is a shifting balance of activities relative to your needs. For example I practice martial arts to keep my body strong, yoga to make my body subtle, meditation to clear my mind, bike around simply to fly and lift my spirit. Poetry as a lens of examination. All these and more are my shifting practices to support my essence and in doing each, each helps me learn more about myself and the world.
Take time, relax and just explore and poke around. Taoism has no plans. Taoism is based upon following your gut feelings and trusting your instincts.
It’s within the pause of a breath… that each step of living becomes visible for your larger life to improve and follow upon.Smile, when needing to pick a possible next step. To smile is to open possibilities.Breathe when needing a break. Since to breathe is to be at one with yourself.Alternate the two and your path will become free and clear for an entire lifetime of wonder to explore.This may sound simple, but you would be surprise how many people cannot embrace this most basic aspect of Taoist practice! People think it cannot be that simple! Taoism truly is this simple. If you follow and practice step four, not only is that all one needs to fully embrace Taoism, but also anything becomes possible within this simple practice. However, most people need time letting go of expectations. So it’s also ok to dig deeper into Taoism. Taoism has many many levels of teachings on purpose to help people from all perspectives move smoothly in life.

Martial Arts To Improve Mental Strength
There is a good reason why everybody was kung fu fighting. Martial arts, a system of armed and unarmed combat originated in East Asia, are highly beneficial to a person’s general wellbeing. Not only do practitioners develop physical conditioning such as strength, fitness and flexibility, but they can also improve their mental health. Imbued with Daoism and Zen Buddhism philosophies, these traditional training techniques have a strong focus on the mental and spiritual state of the warrior. In order to elevate combat into an artform, an individual must achieve a state of unity between mind and body. 
As in Yoga, which literally translates to ‘union’, martial arts demand for the integration of physical training and mental discipline. They endorse principles such as honor and respect, and practices such as meditation and mindfulness, thus promoting a peaceful state of mind. Training the mind to reinforce good habits improves the ability to make decisions, solve problems and overcome challenges, and even fights mental illness. 
There is a broad array of practices derived from martial arts. Kung fu alone encompasses several hundred fighting styles that have developed over the centuries in China. There are also hybrid combat sports such as mixed martial arts, as practiced by Ben Nguyen, that combine techniques from a few other disciplines. It is no surprise that Nguyen was able to use his MMA fighting skills in the Marvel kung fu film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
BJJ derives from Japanese ‘jujutsu’, which translates to ‘gentle art’ and is regarded as one of the most traditional types of martial arts. The gentle aspect comes from the fact that it is designed for a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves against bigger, stronger adversaries. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered as one of the most difficult self-defense techniques to learn. In fact, it originated as quite a ruthless combat style. Yet it focuses on the understanding of human anatomy and ground fighting skills to achieve a non-violent submission of one’s opponent. 
From a physical perspective, BJJ is a great workout. The combination of explosive and pressure-based movements has an effect on weight loss, muscle toning, strength and cardio. It also improves the body’s balance and reactive ability. But BJJ is also known as ‘a game of human chess’ because it requires sharp reasoning and strategic thinking. Considering the vast variety of concepts that the practitioner must learn, it is a strict mental workout that improves focus and concentration. Tai Chi & QiGong
Short for ‘tai chi chuan’, tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art drawn from the principles of ‘taiji’ that promote harmony in the process of conditioning the body. Originated as a form of attack and defense, tai chi was also designed to provide balance and inner peace. Although it employs slow, flowing movements, it is an invigorating exercise that improves muscle strength and flexibility.
Not only does this low-impact practice have proven effects in increasing stamina and aerobic capacity, but it also decreases stress, anxiety and depression. The carefully controlled movements and breathing are believed to improve mood, sleep quality and cognitive functioning. 
Qigong is another low-impact, coordinated body-breath-meditation system with similar benefits as tai chi. Qigong is an internal form of martial arts, used as a mind and body preparation to embrace an external martial art. The main differences between these two disciplines are: first, tai chi involves a series of movements while qigong is the repetition of one stationary movement. Second, tai chi is focused on specific postures that promote overall well-being, while qigong is a simple, specific movement that flows freely from a certain feeling or emotion.
Muay Thai
Muay Thai is the national sport and traditional martial art of Thailand, and it literally translates to ‘Thai boxing’. It is also known as the ‘art of eight limbs’ because it employs the use of hands, elbows, shins and knees to strike an opponent. Its roots are traced to the 13th century, originating from military combat. 
As this full-contact sport requires constant practice, endurance and full-body workout, it strengthens the muscles and burns calories effectively. It can also reduce blood pressure and minimize the risk of developing heart disease. Muay thai is a demanding practice that enhances grit and mental toughness. It teaches perseverance and stimulates the capacity to deal with uncertainty and adversity. It is fun, releases endorphins, increases self-confidence, and improves focus and reflexes. 
Aikido
This modern Japanese martial art originated as a non-competitive discipline based on ‘bushido’, a set of qualities and principles that constitute the ideal warrior. The Aikido training focuses on fighting the enemies within before developing a comprehensive system of defense and attack techniques that include weapons such as swords and knives. It provides an integrated physical fitness, flexibility and relaxation, teaching to use the entire body to produce expansive power to overcome a bigger and stronger adversary. 
This vigorous training is very conscious of the interactions between the mind and body. The relaxation in the body naturally leads to mental relaxation. At the same time, all ingrained habits and patterns as well as psychological and spiritual insights are reflected in the body. Aikido aims to deconstruct patterns of avoidance and fear, and defensive reactions to pressure and conflict.

Martial arts reduce stress, provide clarity, improve confidence and stimulate a positive mindset. By controlling emotions and resisting negative impulses, they enhance focus and performance which extends from the practice to the ‘real world’. These rigorous disciplines help in building character and improving self-confidence, all necessary qualities to maintain a healthy mental state. The constant need for self-improvement to continue growing and earning belts teaches one to recognise weaknesses and acknowledge achievements one step at a time. Hmm, well I usually associate myself with water mostly, my alternative being fired. As for a fighting style/weapon, I'd have to say a boe staff/spear and tai chi chuan.
