A list of named swings and such
So. I know one of these already exists. BUT. I'm doing another. because i can
Old London Swings (pre-Revival, mostly late 80s and the 90s) Greycat/Hysperia/NBQ (nameless brown queen)- Greycat was sometimes known as NBQ, it depended on her costume, which ranged from grey to tan. Hysperia is a different cat who has sometimes been called NBQ by fans even though she isn't Greycat/NBQ AJ- "Almost Jemima". Female kitten Tabbygirl- more mature queen (usually covered adult roles) Patches- male kitten, often resembles Admetus Calico- male or female Caramel- male, looks very similar to Victor Victor- originated here but used in productions worldwide
Post-revival London Swings Electra (also Lightning Ellectra) George Pouncival Victor
Early Broadway Swings (80s and 90s) Spike- young male George- young male AJ- young female Greycat- female Carbucketty- male kitten, later cut when Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer became actual cats and not trash puppets Babygriz's design was also used as a swing
US Tour Swing Spike- different design. male.
China 2012 Grumbuskin Jemima Oliva Murad Quaxo Noilly Prat Latter four have since been used in other productions
Gothenburg 2006 Isis Ramses Garbo Shakespeare Tintomara Agustus Moses Savannah
Warsaw 2004 Fraszka Fantasia Sierściuch Zyleta/Kocik Le Miau Angelika Mamrotka Turbo Ptys Menello Bianco Kara Kotek
Tecklenburg 2015 Rocketta Eris Barnaby Buttons Bonzo Mab
Thunerseespiele 2017 Ishtar Luna Roxy
2009 Italian Tour Caligola Paride
Helsinki 1986 Aprilli Gilbert Lilli Marina Meijuli Grumbuskin/Rokkonen Russu Sibylla
Oslo 1985 Kvesesta Potefar Godnattakatt
The Named Swings Some of these are full ensemble characters in certain productions but when other productions cut that character or use an alternative, that name is often used for a swing. Admetus- when he's replaced by Plato, Admetus is sometimes used by a male/female swing Augustus Autumn Bill Bailey Carbucketty Electra Etcetera Exotica- first used to create a cameo for Femi Taylor (who played Tantomile in the OLC I'm pretty sure) in the 1998 film but has since been used for swings in large productions George- male kitten Jemima- female kitten Jonathan- male Murad- young male Noilly Prat- young female Olivia- young female Peter Quaxo- young male Victor- kind of an elderly male? his performer usually covers the older roles like Gus and Old Deuteronomy There's also a swing Babygriz in the current UK Tour
And now the mindfuck that is alternatives: Bill Bailey/Tumblebrutus- Bill Bailey originated in the original London production. Tumblebrutus was used instead of him on Broadway and in the 1998 film (the latter to maintain international something or other). In the 98 film it was Bill Bailey under the name Tumblebrutus. Carbucketty/Pouncival- Carbucketty originated in the original London production. As with Bill Bailey/Tumblebrutus, Pouncival was used instead of his London counterpart on Broadway and in the 1998 film. In the 98 film it was Carbucketty under the name Pouncival. Pouncival/George- the 2014 London Palladium production included a third male kitten aside from Carbucketty and Bil Bailey named Pouncival, who's design was actually much closer to the original London George character than to Carbucketty.
Quaxo/Mistoffelees- Big mindfuck! In UK-style productions, the performer is credited as Quaxo up until his song, where he is revealed to be The Magical Mr. Mistoffelees. This is usually explained as Mr. Mistoffelees being Quaxo's stage name. However, in some productions they're completely different cats, with Quaxo using a totally different design. Also, as Quaxo/Misto used to dance a tap dance duel against Jennyanydots while dressed as the lead beetle. Because of this, all pre-revival London productions attached the name Quaxo to the lead tap dancing beetle regardles of whether or not it was played by Mistoffelees. Plato/Admetus- Even bigger mindfuck! Admetus was the original double for Macavity in London and I think London-based prodctions still use Admetus. Plato is the Broadway version of the same cat. The Plato you see in the 1998 film is the Admetus design. Plato's design originally had a lot of brown and grey but since the 98 film, which used the Admetus design, you get a lot of "Admetus costume and makeup but named Plato". In productions where Plato is the Macavity double, the name Admetus is sometimes used for a swing (this is common in Australian-style productions) Admetus/George- This one is purely to do with the 98 film. Frank Thompson was credited with playing the Rumpus Cat and Admetus. Fans assumed the cat who was actually using the George design was Admetus, but it is unknown if the renaling of the George design to Admetus was intentional or not. Jemima/Sillabub- Jemima originated from the original London production but was renamed Sillabub in the US and in US-based prosuctions to avoid any negative racial connotations. Since then, the name Sillabub is used more often outside of Europe, though in productions where Sillabub is used as the principle version, the name Jemima is sometimes used for a female swing. Jemima is a named swing in the China 2012 and Shiki productions.
Other names There are two names in Old Possum's that haven't been used in any production (that I know of): James and Cat Morgan. Then there's Socrates, who is exclusive to the 2019 film.
So! That's that! Wow this got long and kinda detailed. If you've any questions/additions/whatever, send them in an ask and I'll do my best to answer.
There are many, many, more unnamed swings, but this is a compiled list of named swings.
I got the majority of my information from the wiki and also from this post by @/theimpossiblescheme.

Age Chart
A fun little exercise to get my HCs organized.  A couple notes:
-Please note that these are just ages that I personally like to HC in my little universe - they are subject to change depending on interpretation/are fluid, and you do not need to agree with me. I encourage you to make your own age charts!
-This age scale is based on human ages rather than cat ages just because that’s how I like to read it. I don’t bother calculating cat years. It’s all based on vibes.
-Characters are organized from left to right with those on the left being the eldest of the group, and continuing younger as you read right. Some cats might be the same age in years, but several months or weeks older than the other, ergo the order. I have put rough ages next to each of them, but they are flexible/exist in a range.
-Any names given to swing/ensemble characters I’ve decided to include are either my own names, or names that I have borrowed from others (more specifically @theimpossiblescheme - and I believe Rhia for one of them. If I put a * next to the name, it doesn’t belong to me).

🎷 Have you ever seen Cats live? If more than once, which was your favorite?
No, sadly! US Tour 6 came right near where I live a couple times in 2019-2020 but I would've never been brave enough to go somewhere at the height of the pandemic, and I was only sort of into Cats at the time. Me and my aunt want to go together sometime, but we'll probably have to wait for when/if the US tour comes back
✍️ If you had total creative control over a production of Cats, what would you change and why?
Cut Growltiger for one. It really does nothing for the play overall in my opinion, and I've never successfully sat through the full song once in my life. I love all the songs in Cats except for that one, it just sucks. (And on that note, also change Those Lines™ from Pekes & Pollicles)
Otherwise, there's a lot of minor characters/swings that aren't in every production that I'd love to just cram in there. Etcetera, George, Quaxo, Tabbygirl, That One Swing Whose Name I Cant Remember That Looks Like Cassandra. All of them. I think there should be oodles of kittens on stage. I get why they can't hire that many actors for a production, but that's what I would want.
🐱 Who's your favorite song cat and why?
Misto. It's not even a competition, I'm sorry to all of the non-Misto song cats out there. 😬 I just love everything about the concept of 'short king cat-wizard with absolute godly powers that he uses exclusively to put on cool light shows for his buddies.'

Here is Part 1 of 2 for these beautiful CATS acrylic keychains made by Melankolique on Etsy. These keychains are so cute, and have wonderful art of each character on them! Everyone pictured, except the first, is one that is available for purchase, and are 6 cm in size.
The first one is about double the size and was a special run where only one or two of each character were made. The once I obtained is a Swing Cat design from London, which is likely a Tabbygirl/AJ/NBQ design, and I still kick myself for not buying all the ones I wanted when they were available!
I think these are really nice pieces, and they help to support an artist who makes fantastic art!

(I owe this one to @the-cat-at-the-theatre-door‘s musings about Gus the Theatre Cat as a Madame Giry-esque ballet teacher and these videos from the National Ballet of Canada.  I needed more of him and Tabbygirl in my life, and this is what resulted--hope everyone enjoys!)
If somebody were to ask Miauzara her favorite memories of her father, she would have to answer in seven parts.  One for each of the princess’s gifts in her first ballet.  She wasn’t playing Aurora, of course–that honor went to a queen a couple years older than her (and Gus had urged her not to take it personally since neither of them wanted him to be accused of nepotism).  But she would be understudying a number of the fairies, and she would have to learn each of their tracks in a matter of weeks.
Candide, the Crystal Fountain fairy, came bearing the gift of purity.  “Or it might better be called honesty,” Gus clarified, giving the bags under Zara’s eyes a gently pointed look.  “It won’t do for her to be sneaking about behind her loved ones’ backs, after all.”  When Zara inevitably came down with a cold, Pumpernickel came to her dressing room with a smuggled bag of chicken broth, along with a very scratchy note full of advice on how to take care of her paws between rehearsals.
Coulante, the Enchanted Garden fairy, came with vitality.  “So that she might lead an interesting and energetic life,” Gus explained.  As their first five minute break commenced, he put a paw under Zara’s chin, saw that her eyes had cleared up, and smiled again.  She already felt ten times better waking up that morning, but seeing her father smile increased it tenfold.
Miettes qui tombent, the Woodland Glade fairy, came scattering breadcrumbs all over the great hall of the palace.  “She’s the most generous of the fairy court,” Gus said when Zara looked at him in confusion.  “And that’s how she wants Aurora to grow up–with kindness and the spirit of giving.”  At the end of that rehearsal, she noticed him shivering more than usual and huddling under his old blanket.  With Pumpernickel’s help, she found the restaurant where they’d gotten the broth and served it to Gus that night in a teacup.
Canari qui chante, the Songbird fairy, came with elegance.  “Which goes much farther than physical form,” Gus added, nudging one of Miauzara’s feet into position.  “You might call it tact or grace under pressure, or you might call it confidence.  Either way, they’ll help Aurora find her voice.”  And when Zara finally got through her variation without stumbling, Gus’s applause was the loudest in the theater.
Violante, the Golden Vine fairy, came bearing great strength.  “I think that one should go without saying,” Gus said as Zara nestled against his shoulder one evening, paws aching and eyes full of exhausted tears.  Opening night was only a week away, and she would get there, she knew she would… she just needed a few minutes right now.  And for such a frail old tom, Gus held her surprisingly steady as they stumbled backstage to join everyone for bed.
Diamant, herald of the Sparkling Jewel fairies, came to grant wisdom.  “Any princess worth her claws must have some ideas about the world and some instinct on how to make them happen,” Gus offered quietly as they stood below the light booth and listened to her older siblings chatting with their friends in the crew.  Asparagus had very strong opinions about the colors onstage, and Jelly was worried about the spotlights washing everyone out… both things Zara hadn’t even considered yet.  Maybe she could ask Wiskuscat to let them both help–surely there was wisdom in letting the cats who knew what they were talking about take charge here.
And the Lilac Fairy, the one who loved Aurora enough to protect her from a deadly curse, came to wake her up at the end of it all.  This time, Gus had nothing to say.  As Zara scrambled offstage amidst the final applause, ears askew under her tiara and trailing purple glitter behind her, the glowing grin on his face was enough to let her breathe a moment, straighten herself out, and let herself bask in the pride and joy emanating from every inch of the theater.

1,7,8,15,20 for the jellicle ask
Favorite swing(s)?: Etcetera, Exotica, NBQ/Graycat, Tabbygirl, AJ/George, Caramel and Victor.
7. Favorite sibling headcanon?: Plato, Pounce and Tumble as brothers, Bomba and Demeter as sisters, Munk, Tugger and Mac as brothers are my perennial faves.
8. Favorite makeup design?: This is a hard one, i love so many looks. But . . . i am quite fond of Skimbleshanks especially when it's more orange and has lots of tabby lines.
15. Onstage pet peeves?: Hmm. How do i interpret this question . . . i think my biggest one is during the opening of Jellicle Songs For Jellicle Cats when all the performers don't get a line. Every one should get to at least sing one line and then it repeats from the top of the list. I know it's not always possible with larger with larger casts for everyone to get to sing during this section. But US Cats Cast seem to keep getting smaller and smaller and certain characters aren't singing during this section and it's just . . . LET THEM SING!
20. Have you seen Cats live? Where?: I did! and right before the pandemic too so i got some cast interactions as well, which was wonderful! Not answering where for privacy reasons.

The One Where Munkustrap Tells A Story
Hello! I'm back with another short fic because I wanted to do something small celebrating 100 posts lol
It was a quiet evening, and for once Munkustrap was free. The preparations for the upcoming Ball were going smoothly— for once. He’d promised the kittens a story if they danced all their parts more or less flawlessly, and they had. And so he found himself outside the nursery, a story in mind.
“Tell us a new one!” Carbucketty demanded as soon as he stepped inside. Munk chuckled and put his paw on his chin, pretending to think hard.
“Why, I think I’ve told you all the stories I know already!” He exclaimed. A loud clamour of protests broke out, catching the attention of cats outside the nursery. Many of them who had no other obligations that evening settled down to listen in, and some of the older cats chuckled. Nonetheless, they too eventually got sucked into the tale— Munkustrap really was a Storyteller like none of them had ever seen or heard tell of.
Back in the nursery, the grey protector had raised his paws in surrender. “Alright, alright!” he exclaimed, laughing. “I have a story.” He sat with his back against the wall and instructed the kittens —including the older ones, who apparently didn’t think themselves above his storytelling yet— to sit in a semicircle around him. Cettie, Electra, Olivia and Tabbygirl were competing for the place closest to Bill Bailey, who for once was looking irritated at their attention and plonked himself down next to Tumblebrutus, Carbucketty and Misto. Pouncival, as usual, was sitting the furthest away and slightly elevated, on a large shelf. Rumpleteazer and Mungojerrie slipped in the entrance and sat by Victoria and Quaxo, the latter of whom was shaking his head at whatever substance Sillabub had gotten on her paws. Jemima had somehow ended up in Munkustrap’s lap. Socrates, Plato and Victor were nowhere to be seen. Jellylorum and Hysperia began to hush the chattering.
“Once upon a time, in a land not too far away, lived a princess named—”
“Was she pretty, Dad?” Sillabub interrupted, tapping his shoulder. At least three “Shushes!” rang out.
“Yes, Sillabub, she was the most beautiful princess to have ever lived. But she was no ordinary princess, and her name was—”
“Why wasn’t she ordinary? And why is the story about a yucky princess? Why can’t it be about pirates?” Another interruption, this time from Tumblebrutus, who was scrunching up his nose at the prospect of a story about a beautiful princess. More kittens hissed at him to be quiet.
“Because the last story was about pirates, Tumble,” Munkustrap explained patiently, “And if you’d let me finish one sentence, you’ll find out why she’s no ordinary princess.” The patched kitten muttered an apology and the story continued.
“Her name was… Victoria!” The queenkitten of the same name burst into giggles, as did the rest of the gathered cats. The grey tom smiled. “Her name was Victoria, and she was no ordinary princess, for you see, she wasn’t really a princess—”
Several small and intrigued gasps echoed around the den. “She was an archer, and she was working with the famous outlaw known as Robin Hood, who’s real name, though few knew it, was in fact… Mungojerrie!” Snickering broke out, and the storyteller swept on.
“Robin Hood had a sidekick, who became known as Little John. His real name was Pouncival.” The story continued, and more cats gathered to listen as Munkustrap's voice rose and became almost spellbinding, seeming to dance in and out of one’s ears and whirl around in the breeze, the laughter and gasping of the kittens as the music in the background. Though his voice was solo as he reached the climax, what with the kittens holding their breath in anticipation.
“Victoria had no other choice but to trust Mungojerrie,” Munk said, his voice hushed, “The fire was growing larger and wilder by the minute. So she leapt out the window.” More gasps broke out, and if there was a tear or two rolling down Electra’s face, well, no-cat noticed.
“Down, down, down she fell, all 30 tail lengths of the drop! Victoria closed her eyes and braced herself, waiting, but—! Mungojerrie caught her in the nick of time! ‘Let’s go, Pouncival!’ he yelled and they clambered into the cart and took off into the night! The phoney king was defeated and the gold he’d stolen was returned to the people. The good king returned and, upon learning what had gone on in his absence, declared that the faux princess, Robin Hood and Little John were no longer outlaws, and instead were heroes!”
A series of groans emerged from the kittens as they realised what the next line of the story would be.
“Then, they all lived happily ever after,” Munkustrap finished, giving as best a small bow as he could while sitting on the floor with Sillabub nearly asleep in his arms.
“Why didn’t Mungojerrie and Victoria k-k-kiss at the end?” Etcetera queried through a yawn. The real Victoria made a face of disgust. “Gross! I’d never kiss Mungojerrie!” Mungojerrie stuck his tongue out at her.
“It’s just a story. But now—” Munkustrap heaved himself up as best he could, awkwardly shifting the now-sleeping Sillabub onto the arm that hadn’t gone dead, “—it’s time for bed.”
As the adults inside the den set about getting the kittens to bed and actually sleep —“I can see you peeping at me, Rumple!”— the adults outside sat back to digest the story.
“He’s really something else,” Skimbleshanks said thoughtfully, scratching his chin in thought.
“Who, Straps?” Alonzo questioned the ginger tom, who nodded. “Well, it’s in his blood, isn’t it?” he stated, and went back to washing his paws. Well, it was obvious, wasn’t it? Everyone knew Old Deuteronomy was a storyteller too, though maybe not one quite so good as Munkustrap.
“Alonzo is right. Sure isn’t Tugger the same? All the young cats listen to him,” Jennyanydots said, looking up from her knitting.
“And Macavity,” Alonzo added in a low tone. Tension spread through the gathered cats at the mention of his name.
“Come now, Alonzo, we shan’t talk about him so close to the nursery,” Jenny said, looking back down to her knitting and shaking her head.
“I daresay he has magic,” Skimble said into the lull. The others looked at him in confusion. “I remember hearing a tale once upon a time—”
“That all Jellicles have magic? Come on now, Skimble, you can’t tell me you believe an old legend like that?” Alonzo interrupted him drily.
“I’m sceptical, of course. Though sometimes I wonder… Well, Hysperia knows more about this kind of thing.”
“Did someone say my name?” As if summoned, the brown tabby emerged from the entrance of the nursery and made her way over to them. Jenny greeted her warmly.
“We were just discussing Munkustrap’s talent. Skimble here reckons he has magic.”
“You know more about magic than I do, Hyperia. What do you think?” the ginger tom in question asked her.
“Ah,” Hysperia said heavily, settling herself down next to Jenny. “I was wondering when cats would begin to notice. I’m surprised it took so long, honestly.” Alonzo opened his mouth but Hysperia continued.
“Munkustrap is a gifted —very gifted— Storyteller. Essentially he can captivate an audience with ease. His voice is almost spellbinding, it draws the listener in. He could rally an army if he put his mind to it. Old Deuteronomy is also a Storyteller, but his skill is far surpassed by Munk’s. Gus, too, though he is stronger than Old Deuteronomy.”
The other cats digested this information. “What about Tugger?” Skimble asked.
Hysperia chuckled. “Tugger has a different gift, though there is a similarity. Tugger has Charisma.” The others laughed, but Hysperia said, “I’m completely serious. It’s real magic. Though granted, his particular gift seems to have more of an effect on younger cats.”
Alonzo shook his head, unconvinced. “I’ll believe you about Straps, and maybe Tugger, but there’s no way all Jellicles have magic.”
Hysperia gave a small smile. “Think about it. Look at the kittens, for example. Bill Bailey seems quite… charismatic, does he not? And have you ever noticed how Jerrie and Teazer always manage to get up to so much mischief whilst hardly ever facing the consequences? Darn good luck, I’d say. And doesn’t Pouncival always seem that bit… faster than the other kittens? Not to mention Mistoffelees and Jemima…”
Alonzo snorted. “Whatever kitten stories take your fancy, I suppose.” Hysperia just smiled again.
“Well, I believe it anyhow,” Skimble said, cleaning his whiskers.
“It’s a nice story, though I’m hesitant to believe it,” Jenny said, refocusing on her knitting.
“Why, Jenny, you’re one of the more gifted ones!” the resident magic expert exclaimed in surprise.
“How so?”
“Take a look at all that you do with your mice and cockroach friends. Not everycat can do that, you know.”
“Please, dear, that’s just patience and a willingness to communicate,” Jenny chuckled.
Hysperia smiled a knowing smile. “If you say so.”
