did you know that out of 150 popular video games released between 1985 and 2022, only 6% of them feature sole female protagonists?

did you know that prior to mass effect 3, female shepard was never used in any promotional material for the series?

(and there's no hard data available on this, but i very distinctly recall a lot of gamerbro outrage when me3 had an optional reversible cover so you could pick between male and fem shep on your personal game)

did you know that only 18% of players chose femshep in any shape or form (default or customized) during the original release?

(anecdotally, i know a few people who didn't even realize you could play a female at all in me1 bc of how the cc is setup)

did you know with the release of the legendary edition in 2021 the percentage of femshep players didn't even double (despite jennifer hale's seemingly enormous popularity amongst the broader playerbase over the past decade) and is reported at 32%?

did you know that dragon age inquisition has the same breakdown between male and female inquisitors (68% to 32% respectively)?

did you know during the playtests for assassin's creed odyssey, it was a 50/50 split between kassandra and alexios, and ubisoft suits actually thought when the game was released, kassandra would be more popular? and yet once again, about 70% of players chose the male protag

did you know evie and aya were both supposed to have a much larger roles in assassin's creed syndicate and origins but were forced into a smaller role bc the ubisoft marketing team didn't think the games would sell well with a female lead?

cdpr hasn't released data on male vs female v, probably because the game handles gender a little differently than just two strict options like many other rpgs, but it was revealed that panam was the most popular romance, sitting at about 68%, which means at least 68% of players chose the male v body. I'm sure some players did not make that choice as a cis male v, but i would also guess that those who didn't are a small minority of this demographic, and if you factor in kerry romancers, this split is probably very similar to other games in the genre

now i realize that a lot of the male v players who are in more transformative fandom spaces (like tumblr) are not the str8 gamer dudebros of reddit angry about pores on a female character's face and whatnot. i realize that a lot of you are also on the outskirts of the perceived norm and also feel under-represented by mainstream male protags and that's incredibly frustrating and alienating and i genuinely feel for you

but female protagonists and female gamers who want to play as female protagonists and who have a few niche spaces to celebrate female protags are not the reason for your lack of representation

and frankly you don't sound a whole lot different from the angry incel gamer boys when you say shit like "fem v gets too much attention"

so maybe try advocating for male protags who don't fit the generic boring gruff white guy mold without throwing women under the bus. we're should be allies in this fight, not rivals

I know folks are super jaded when it comes to hearing all the "Site ABC is dying! Join site XYZ instead!" suggestions, but I am gonna give Pillowfort a little love under the circumstances. If it's not for you, it's not for you, but I've been enjoying it since I started using it more over the past several months.

A few relevant highlights:

No AI bullshit! Not only are they not partnering with any goddamn AI companies to scrap our work, but they even have a policy prohibiting images created with generative AI! (You can read more on their staff blog.)

No inconsistently enforced and often arbitrary rules about NSFW content! It's all allowed, baby! (Again, I recommend reading this staff post for the deets.)

Has a lot of the actually good features Tumblr has... You can save drafts! You can queue posts! You can schedule posts! You can filter content!

... And good features Tumblr lacks! A robust commenting system! An improved reblogging system that prevents outdated versions of a post from circulating! Communities!

It also has an Xkit-esque extension to improve native features! I highly recommend checking out Tassel!

So what's the catch, right? It's definitely not perfect, and some things might be a deal-breaker for some folks:

It does not (currently) support audio or video posts. You can embed YouTube videos and the like, but you can't upload them directly to Pillowfort.

For free users, the image size limit is 2 MB, which might be a deterrent to GIF makers. (For $2.49/month, you can upgrade that to 6 MB.)

The design is pretty bare-bones and can be a little clunky in some areas. There's also no app, although my understanding is the website is pretty responsive on mobile devices. (Can't personally confirm or deny this as I don't use it on my phone.)

It does have more maintenance and downtime than Tumblr, although I haven't found it too disruptive.

It's also generally a slower experience, so if you're looking for a super fast-paced dash you can never reach the end of, you might find it lacking.

And I don't consider this a deal breaker, but it is worth mentioning that because there are no advertisers on Pillowfort, that means it's user-funded. It will likely never have the flashier features of Tumblr because of this, but if you chip in a few bucks a month, you can get some fun perks, like the increased image size and extra avatars (which I personally love.)

My fort is very NSFW (porn gifs my beloved) but is otherwise very similar to what I post here. I also have a whopping FIFTY (50) registration invites I can send out, if anyone is interested in getting on there ASAP.

And lastly, for my CP77 mutuals, especially my Goro babies, I did set up a little Goro community to share any and all Goro fanworks, ships, brainrot, etc. Most of the posts there right now are from me, and I'd love to see some more variety. :3 (Intro post with rules is here!)

sooo today is my 16th anniversary with the husbando ♡

been feelin Some Kinda Way about tumblr the past few days (for the obvs reasons: the ceo transphobic temper tantrum and the ai shit)

it's always fluctuated between hellsite (affectionate) and hellsite (derogatory), and the sad reality is that even for all its faults, it's still probably the best option for the kind of online interaction i'm looking for

plus, as the meme goes, i've also lived thru dozens of supposed 'this is the end of tumblr' eras so i'm not about to start catastrophizing here

but it feels... idk, just different this time. i think just knowing about how badly they're struggling financially and that tumblr has been deprioritized (or whatever the specific corporate speak was they used when they shared that stuff a few months ago) amongst automattic's properties is not helping

i back my stuff up regularly and share things on multiple sites (i'm probably obnoxiously ubiquitous to some ppl, lmao) so i'm not in danger of losing anything, but my blog is like my own diary & scrapbook--i tag compulsively bc i like looking through the things i've made and collected over the years. there's a part of me feeling like i should start prioritizing somewhere else for that sort of thing

husbando has been trying to convince me to play yakuza 0 for a while and at $6, i think the time has come! I'm not a huge beat 'em up fan but it does look like a lot of fun and I've heard nothing but good things

sun haven at $15 is really tempting me but I'm holding out hope for a switch release still! ditto for coral island. i need my cozy farming sims on a handheld as god intended!!!

hypnospace outlaw has also been on my to-play list for a few years now and i figure i can justify $5 for some surreal 90s web point-and-click shenanigans
