the more i think about how beatrix romances liara in me1 the more sense it makes to me. especially compared to kaidan. she respects kaidan but he vocally disagrees with and challenges her on a lot of her decisions and opinions, which she doesn't like. at that point in her development she's not interested in being challenged like that. kaidan's too real. an emotionally mature human soldier who calls her out.

liara meanwhile comes in and she's literally alien, from a whole other world (both in terms of planet and not being a soldier). she appeals to multiple things: obviously the hero worship from liara's end strokes beatrix's ego, but also liara is a scientist and beatrix, even tho she comes off like a jackboot, is very scientifically minded and curious. and liara isn't as grounded as kaidan. she's lost in her research and holds a lot of idealism. beatrix is not idealistic but she's also not mature and liara doesn't upset that

all of this is why i think beatrix reacts so strongly to liara's distance in me2. with kaidan on horizon it was par for the course. like yeah that's kaidan putting his foot down and having principles, she's used to it. but liara pulling way (among other things) is jolting to her and so it ends up more hurtful and harder for beatrix to come back from it (at least in regards to their romance)
