on the precipice

* standing on the precipice of the rest of my life - as are you -

wondering if apprehension, resignation, expansionism, naturalism or stoicism

will be my running buddy, confidante, consigliere, wingmanperson, foil or comic relief

while i continue to tread tamped time with intrepid steps in sneakers

eschewing stiff soles & sore toes, scuff marks on treasured terra;

a sub-macro goal for this simple soul.

someone said you never walk alone,

except when you're trying to collect a debt, then -

it's o solo mios 'til you get the cheetos.

nonetheless, it's a rarity to quest without an angel or devil by your side ( not on your shoulders, like in the 'toons...)

also known as having an ace up your sleeve, a good luck charm in your pocket, or the blues' lament of being born under a bad sign.

so, who's the wingperson to help me pull the pretty premise ( & their friends ) from the providential bar or club to take home & romance?

dont make languages without phonemic vowels, kids. or else youll have to do this.

just using that word tells you where this'n is goin’...

'midst city smog & hoggish folk today i'm hot like overfried eggs, not those of running yolks with legs i flavor & eat with toast.

nature's reign is deaf & muted here like old spice stored in mason jars set aside for rubes to revere - appalling!

its easy to deride or kid proliferated prisons with a view & a door up 35 floors with a laid out grid below

an elision of blues, deck shuffling & show for the easily amused - not me or you or those who know better.

to the letter, i’m uneasy with a putative peace englazed over street beats thought tantalizing to taste, thought sweet

not realizing the case to be made for unfettered skies under night's shade only - even better, pony rides without need for a tether or permit

from stony faces unable to decode the grit encrusted in competence’ veneer. to all - i beseech, here... instead of reacting, relate - please uncrease & emanate,

[Scene: we're grocery shopping...] Me: "Those baguettes look good." Beth: [age 14] "Baguettes. That's a good word." Me: "What?" Beth: "Baguettes. It's on my list." Me: "Your list of what?" Beth: "I have a list of favorite words. It changes a lot, but baguettes is on there." Me: "What else is on the list?" Beth: "Right now, it's baguettes, vendetta, barbel, and darkling. Maybe one or two others." Me: "Darkling? Like the character from Shadow and Bone?" Beth: "It was a word before that. It means something that is dark, or turning dark." Me: "I did not know that. And barbel? Do you mean barbell?" Beth: "No, a barbel is that little whisker thing that some fish have under their mouths." Me: "Oh, like catfish." Beth: "Right." Me: "Why are these your favorite words?" Beth: "They sound right when you say them. It doesn't even matter what they mean. Their letters and syllables just have a good vibe." Me: "So they have a good 'mouthfeel' like people say about food?" Beth: "Yes." Me: "It's sort of like why there are so many kinds of pasta. They each hold sauce differently and have a different mouthfeel when you're eating them. So maybe it's the same for words?" Beth: "I guess. A lot of pasta names are also pretty good words. Like rigatoni." Me: "Pasta generally has a good vibe, no matter what it's called." Beth: "Maybe, but it tastes better when it has a good name."

Hiya, I'm a classical / film score / OC score composer and I'm writing an SATB choral piece for the Ainulindale and I'm having trouble understanding the stressed syllables on the words. I know in general the rule is if there's 3 or more syllables you accent the third to last syllable, unless there's an acute accent (which I think doesn't include the fun dots). But I'm not 100% sure and I don't want to write a whole piece with the wrong emphasis on the wrong syllable. Lmk if you have a recording of you reading the Quenya version of the Ainulindale or how to do that! I'm using the one written on https://www.elvish.org/gwaith/ainulindale.htm by Ryszard Derdzinski. Lmk if this is the wrong one XD

So, according to my books when you have a word with two syllables, then the focus is on the first syllable. E.g. Anor ['a.nor], parma ['par.ma]

With three syllable words there are two options.

A. The second to last syllable is long

In this case the second to last syllable is the main focus. A long syllable contains either a long vowel (á, é, í, o´, ú), a diphtong (ai, oi, ui, au, eu, iu) or multiple consonants after a vowel.

Examples:

Olórin (long vowel: ó)

Úlairi (Diphtong: ai)

Isildur (two consonants after the vowel: ld)

Menelya (the y counts as a consonant: ly)

B. The second to last syllable is short

If the second to last syllable is short, the third to last syllable is emphasized. A short syllable contains a short vowel or one or no consonants.

Examples:

Orome (second to last syllable is -ro: short vowel followed by a consonant)

Anárion (second to last syllable is -ri: short vowel, not followed by a consonant)

By adding endings such as -ndil, -rdur, -rdil, ldur the emphasis can be shifted. Such as the word "isil" (moon, a noun) and "Isildur" (servant of the moon, a name). In "isil" the emphasis is on the first vowel. In "Isildur" the emphasis is on "sil".

Concerning the fun dots, in tengwar the dots and dashes indicate vowels. It's very similar to Arabic in that regard. The larger letters are generally consonants while the dots and dashes are vowels.

I don't have a recording of myself reading the Ainulindale, but I've been speaking it from what I've heard from the movies and listened from songs. There's a German singer/songwriter called Oonagh and a lot of her songs have Quenya in them! Since German pronunciation is very similar to Quenya, that helps quite a bit with pronunciation. Here are three songs of hers that feature quite a bit of Quenya. Song 1. Song 2. Song 3. (You’ll usually have to wait for the chorus, sorry. 😅)

Another thing I would point out is that the elves are very lyrical. They will forgive emphasis if it works better for the song. (At least that's what I remember reading somewhere) I don't think you need to worry to much about emphasis. My personal pet peeve would be pronunciation more than emphasis of the correct syllable.
