Ik I’m going to be crucified by the fandom but is it weird that I think the whole US Sonic vs JP Sonic discourse is kinda silly? I’m not waving the criticism ofc and not biased to either side. Idk why I think that, but it sounds like the whole “dub vs sub” debate but for a blue boi and I really can’t take it seriously.

Why are we as a fandom not talking more about this scene ??

Clive is literally asking the professor to come back and stop him. Like this isn't him pretending to be Future Luke : he looks genuinely upset/displeased even after the professor promises to come back. He only goes back to smiling after the professor says, and I quote "I wouldn't dream of leaving things here in that state" before talking about stopping his future self. Clive wants confirmation that Layton is actually going to confront the bad guys, that he won't just solve the mystery but fix it too.

And this is literally so important. Clive's speech at the end, about getting saved. This is concrete proof that he had truly meant it from the start, because he's asking for Layton to stop him and thus save everyone here. Which, hey- he didn't just hope and wait to get saved, he tried to save himself too.

Yep, that's right. The game talks about how dangerous it was for Clive to bring Layton underground : it doesn't talk about how even more dangerous it was to let him leave. He could have brought back cops (he did). He could have gathered precious knowledge out there (he did). He could have never come back (and yet he did !!). Clive letting Layton leave is the biggest threat to his plan, and yet HE DID. And you know what else he did ? Make Layton promise to stop him. You can't make a clearer call for help, you just can't.

"Oh but it doesn't make his crimes more forgivable, now does it-" of course not. This isn't about Clive's redemption, it's about Clive trying to avoid needing a redemption : his efforts are vain the moment he started using the fortress. But. There were efforts.

“Hugs?” Mor’s brow furrows, glancing over at Elis, “More mortal affection?”

“Yes.” Elis pinches their nose, eyes slipping shut in agitation, “Unfortunately. You know when Syl tackles you?”

“Oh,” Mor blinks in understanding, “Then I suppose I don’t give hugs, but I do receive them by being tackled.”

Elis sneers, glancing your way, “Don’t touch me.”

“And height?” Mor repeats, “In regards to…romantic partners? Should we ask Venerus-?”

“Please do not ask Venerus anything even remotely related to this one’s romantic life.” Elis groans, “I’m not mentally prepared for that conversation.”

“What about our romantic lives?” Mor prompts.

Elis shoots them a skeptical look, “We have no romantic lives. Regardless, still not mentally prepared.”

“Are you,” Mor pauses, “Are you mentally prepared for anything?”

“No.” Elis says without hesitation, giving their companion a scathing look, “So shut up.”

It’s quiet for a beat.

Mor glances back at you with a bemused smile, “It appears we don’t feel strongly one way or another.”

Yeah yeah! Lemme grab the info...

Here we go, under the cut!

We begin with three curious kittypets; Lotus, Gladys, and Printer Mishap; who wander into the woods together but get separated fleeing a fox.

Lotus winds up in marshy Frogclan, where two young cats, Sprigpaw and Screechkit, take to her. Their grandfather, elder Hopfoot, promises the leader Mushroomstar that he will keep an eye on her, and she joins the clan as Lotuspaw.

Some sketches of Lotuspaw, Sprigpaw, and Screechkit (who was originally a tabby but got turned into a tortie).

Lotuspaw is Large, strong, and unusually fluffy (causing detritus to constantly become stuck in her fur). She's also the only one who keeps her collar the whole time.

Gladys winds up in the rocky, hilly territory of Toadclan, where leader Houndstar rules with an iron paw. She sweet-talks her way into avoiding getting kicked out, and is renamed Heronpaw. She takes to the warrior lifestyle very quickly, and after she manages to kill a fox and send its mate running, she gets her warrior name: Heronfang.

Heronfang and Houndstar feature here. Heronfang is the smallest of the three ex-kittypets, because I think it's funny. However, she puts her stature to good use: she's very nimble and can quickly find her way to your weak spots.

Houndstar attempts to take Frogclan territory, and Lotuspaw and Heronfang clash. Lotuspaw manages to get a deep scratch on Heronfang's cheek, and creative strategies from the Frogclan warriors win them the fight. Lotuspaw earned her warrior name- Lotusheart- for her bravery in the battle.

Printer Mishap fell down a cliff of rocks directly to the beach where Newtclan makes its home. The leader Vaststar took a vested interest in her knowledge of Twoleg objects, and personally took her on as his apprentice, renaming her Cocoonpaw, and soon after Cocoonsight.

Eventually she met up with Lotusheart and family, who had convinced Mushroomstar to let them search for her, and together they went in pursuit of Heronfang (who fled with Houndstar, now Houndstomp, after the shameful loss to Frogclan).

Unfortunately the reunion of the friends was short-lived, for Vaststar revealed his allegiance to the Dark Forest- the time was right for the malevolent spirits to come down and give him such power he drove his whole paw through Cocoonsight.

Cocoonsight is a tuxedo cat, a little bigger than Heronfang. She has short, well-groomed fur- when she hasn’t just walked straight into some mess.

Starclan sent down its power to allow Lotusheart to fight Vaststar, allowing the others to flee. Unfortunately she could only fight for so long, and used the last vestiges of the power running to catch up with her new family and lead them to her old home.

Lotusheart, Sprigpaw, Screechkit, and Hopfoot took shelter in Lotusheart's old home, resting and recovering from the ordeal. Hopfoot did Sprigpaw's warrior ceremony and Screechkit's apprentice ceremony, and the two became Sprigleap and Screechpaw.

Heronfang stepped up as the remnants of the clans banded together, becoming Heronstar.

Lotusheart and co returned to discover something terrible; at the moment Cocoonsight was struck, the Dark Forest collectively possessed her, preventing her body from dying and trapping her spirit so it couldn't get to Starclan.

After this I don't really have much plot figured out; I'm trying to stick close to the canon plotline though, feel free to suggest your ideas!

Words of Radiance - Brandon Sanderson (Stormlight Archives #2)

5/5 - delicious tension and character interactions; everybody grows; i forgot how absolutely awful Shallan's backstory is, poor girl

Spoilers below!

I love that in each of these novels, Sanderson is dedicated to discussing what holding to your choices and your oaths actually means. What does it mean for a character to promise two people contradictory things? What does it mean for someone to live a lie? How does someone come to terms with their traumatic past, even knowing that they were choosing from a series of bad options? I cannot express how much I love a thinking novel! And not in the sense of "Is killing people wrong? You decide" because frankly that's tired.

Anyway, I really appreciate how much depth that Shallan has in this novel. Explaining her backstory turns her from a character who can be somewhat annoying at times with a dark past, into someone who's actively trying to make the world a brighter place for her own sanity. It also reveals a hardness, an edge to her that is certainly present in WoK, but nowhere near as pronounced. One of the things that my sister and I have remarked on while reading Sanderson's books is that, while his romances are sometimes a little weird (not you Shallan/Adolin, never you), his female characters are almost always superbly written. Shallan is allowed to be competent and feminine while still being annoying and a disaster and too ready to insult people at all times.

Kaladin's arc is one that is incredibly near and dear to my heart, and while I love him and think he can do know wrong (yes, even in the times when he is very much doing wrong), I just love seeing everyone else think he's insufferable and annoying and mouthy! He's a little bitch and I love him for that! They put him in prison, made him depressed and willing to commit regicide, and then he turned around and said (to Elhokar's face), "Let's be clear on this Elhokar, I hate you and you're a bad king and not a great person and also a whiny brat (the tirade continues for a while) but I'll protect you anyway." That's character-of-all-time behavior.

I also adore the way that Adolin/Kaladin and Shallan/Kaladin develop a working relationship over the course of this book. They go from reluctant coworkers into best worsties into actual friends.

Investing a lot of meaning in the restorative and motivational power of breakfast foods. I mean a lot of meaning. Like, a lot. Getting swoony when someone knows your order before you do. Cooking for someone when they won't take care of themselves. Seducing someone by being sweet to the children in their life. Like siblings. Or cats. Or goats. Forming warrior's bonds through high-stress baking situations. And also, stealing the clothing of the object of your affection, which I would link to a fic for, except that that happens in ALL OF THEM.

I'd love to know more about the 4 years time skip in the story, the summary wasn't satisfactory at all. We could have learned more about how Hange managed to handle their role as Commander or how the people of Paradis lived without being threatened by Titans anymore. There are still so many questions in my head!
