50. What does friendship mean to you?
[all from a joke post about ocs (and us) being Bad At Making Friends, some of the most fun I've had answering an ask, thank you so much for this, stark <3; most of the answer is under a cut with a ton more development of Eleison (and Chihdo!) than I expected to be doing this week]
Master Nightstar,
I must admit, when we first received your letter, I was worried it was going to be a missive complaining about the Archive’s collection of Sith datacrons having been insufficient for your research, a declaration of Jedi superiority. So I was delighted to find instead your social invitation, and that the date does not conflict with my personal calendar. It has been some time since I have been invited to a social engagement, particularly one not among Sith lords or the Reclamation Service, so please do not be offended if my manners are… brusque.
Your questionnaire is quite thorough. Were you Sith, I would have doubts about your intentions in asking such personal questions, but from the interactions we had during your visit, I would like to believe that you have no motive other than what you have stated. If you are so inclined, I look forward to learning your answers to these questions when I join you for tea.
My apologies for not returning my answers in the same format as they arrived--the leatheris binding was quite lovely, and it’s so rare for anyone to use flimsi these days, so I wanted to keep it for my personal collection. I hope you’ll understand my decision to have my response digitized (makes it easier to encrypt the answers to some of your more personal questions as well).
-Loremaster Eleison Kirnah
(Dear Master Nightstar—and Captain Thane,
Thank you for writing to Loremaster Kirnah after your visit. It’s rare that she takes the time to do much for herself these days, so I am going to do my best to hold her to your invitation. I have taken the liberty of doing some mild edits to her answers for clarity—the Loremaster tends to work on projects in the order that suits her fancy rather than following what might look like logical sequence. I apologize if my notes are distracting.
The Archive’s doors are open to both of you any time you wish to visit again.
-Chihdo Tanwa, Junior Archivist and assistant to Loremaster Kirnah)
1. What embarrasses you the most and/or what’s been your most embarrassing moment?
I used to be embarrassed by the Force, and by what it might mean that I had a connection to it. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve worked to care less and less what others think of me, and I have found that public embarrassment and shame isn’t worth my time.
(She really doesn’t have any shame, I’m embarrassed to be associated with her sometimes though. -CT)
2. Who do you look up to the most, and what qualities do you love about that person?
I used to look up to my Master, Darth Karrid, but… my respect for her was misguided. She was strong and resilient, and she was more progressive than many of her contemporaries. Ultimately her ego got her killed, and she taught me more about what I shouldn’t do than what I should. Hmm… I was supposed to be telling you about someone I do respect. I have a lot of respect for a Jedi Master, Kestrel Fortuna, who has come to the Archive a number of times now in search of various tomes, who has never held my history or my views against me.
3. What’s your biggest fear?
No longer being useful. Losing the knowledge I have acquired so far in my life.
4. What’s your love language?
I suppose quality time is my love language - I like to spend time doing things with others that they (and I, if possible) enjoy.
5. How do you like to be comforted when you’re sad or upset?
This has surprised some of the people I have asked for it (it honestly surprised me to discover it), but I like to be held when I’m sad--not if I am upset though, if I am upset I do not find physical touch comforting, and prefer to be left on my own to work through it.
6. What’s your all-time favorite memory?
Discovering my ability to hide inside the Force--it isn’t an entirely positive memory (in fact, it’s tied to rather negative memories), but falling through a veil in the Force itself, overcoming the initial fear of having lost myself, and really beginning to connect with what the Force meant to me.
7. Who was the last person to make you cry and why?
Ultimately, I did, but it was a very cathartic cry. The story of why is rather personal, but it involves testing my limitations, and finding them to be different than I thought.
8. Where do you hope to be five years from now? Ten? Fifteen?
With any luck, I’ll still be running the Archive and taking occasional expeditions to gather new artifacts and relics for our collections. I can’t imagine doing anything else, or retiring, and I don’t see myself slowing down anytime soon if I can help it.
9. When have you felt the most proud?
When I was named Loremaster of the Nfolgai Archive.
10. When have you felt the most challenged?
Please see my answer to question number 7.
(Loremaster Kirnah should not have me proof her correspondence before it goes out if she’s going to give tauntingly vague answers about stories like this that she hasn’t told me, knowing full-well that I will pester her to the end of my days until she tells us both, Master Nightstar. -CT)
11. Have you ever been bullied?
I wouldn’t say bullied, but while I was still living on an Ascendancy-adjacent world, there were definitely those who were… unkind… about my budding Force-sensitivity. I did my best to ignore it, but I was just a child.
12. Do you have any regrets? If so, what are they?
Right now, somewhat flippantly, I regret answering your questions out of order, but reading through the list, some of them struck me more than others. I trust that my assistant will catch any I neglect to answer before I send this back to you.
(I hate her sometimes. -CT)
13. Which celeb would you want as your other BFF and why?
Ha! Most in the Empire with “celebrity” status are not the type of person that I would want to be friends with. Darths for whom “best friend” more realistically means “rival” (I was in line to be a Darth once, they wanted me to head the Sphere of Technology, but there’s just so much infighting that I don’t have the patience for), famous warriors who may or may not have as much honor in battle as they say they do… And I imagine that many Republic “celebrities” wouldn’t want much to do with me by dint of my associations.
14. Out of all your family members, who are you closest to?
I am not close with any of my family. My parents and I weren’t exceptionally close when I was a child, and I left home for my apprenticeship when my Force-sensitivity manifested, rather than try to suppress it. I believe my parents had another child to replace me, but I have not been back home to meet them.
15. What do you do when no one else is around?
Mostly the same things I do when there are others around. I do, of course, have some things that are kept private.
16. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
It’s fair to say that most people don’t know many things about me. Most people don’t take the time to ask (though to be fair, most people don’t come to the Archive to learn about those of us who staff it, they come here for specific research purposes).
17. What do you think happens when we die?
Any great number of things can happen, depending on how we lived. There are many dark lords who have left echoes of themselves in the relics housed here in the Archive, but there’s debate about whether what lives in the object is them, and most of them are annoyingly tight-lipped about the rituals they performed to get where they are and about what they are actually experiencing.
18. Do you want to have kids one day? How many?
Oh, I would very much prefer not to. I have a pet who is the best parts of having a child without the negative parts, and that’s quite enough for me.
19. What's the best present you ever received? Who gave it to you and why was it so special?
Master Nightstar, your invitation (and this questionnaire) is one of the best gifts I’ve ever received. I’ve had to do some much-needed introspection and it has given me much to look forward to.
20. What's the worst you've ever been physically hurt?
I sustained several injuries during my apprenticeship, but none of them were life-altering or career-ending. I’ve had my fair share of burns, sprains, torn muscles, a few broken bones… but luckily nothing all that bad.
21. What's your earliest childhood memory?
Tormenting the family loth cat under the table while my mother and grandmother cleaned vegetables for dinner.
22. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
If I change one thing, what else might be impacted by the change though?
23. Do you believe in soulmates?
I spent most of my life not believing in them, but I’m not so sure anymore.
(Loremaster Kirnah absolutely has a soulmate, and her soulmate is terrifying. But they are so… gentle and right? together? I have never seen Loremaster Kirnah happier than when she’s with her. -CT)
24. When you can't sleep, what keeps you up at night?
I’m sure this is supposed to get at what I agonize over at night, but sometimes just the electrical storms keep me up at night. No matter how long I’ve lived here, sometimes when they’re at their strongest, you cannot sleep through them.
25. What has your hardest goodbye in life been so far?
I will be honest, I haven’t experienced many hard goodbyes. I thought saying goodbye to my parents as a child would be harder, but I think they were glad not to have to figure out what to do with me once Karrid asked to train me. Every time I say goodbye to Lord Brontes is… difficult; I’m never quite sure when I’ll see her again. It’s still so odd to want so badly to see someone.
26. What's the last lie you told?
Oh, I’ve probably told at least one small lie in my answers here, try as I might not to.
27. What's the best compliment you've ever received?
That I kept someone whose intellect I admired on their toes.
28. What do you consider the ultimate comfort food?
A good rich stew.
29. What do you consider your best physical feature?
My shoulders.
(Master Nightstar, it is hilarious to watch when a younger visitor to the Archive who wants to see one of the usually off-limits collections is told they can be granted access if they can best the Loremaster in single combat, to see them smuggly prepare themselves for what they expect will be an easy win, only to then see the dismay on their face when she exposes those shoulders and they realize how wrong they are. -CT)
30. What are the top three things that stress you out?
Whether my staff are paid well enough. What would happen if the Archive was attacked. Whether I made the right choice by leaving home.
31. What are the top three ways you deal with stress?
Practicing saber forms, organizing my personal kyber crystal collection (which is separate from the Archive’s collection), sitting with my ginx.
(She doesn’t deal with stress. She ignores it. -CT)
32. When was the last time you were jealous and why?
When Acina was given control of the Arcanum. She and I were both equally qualified for the position, but there is a distinct… preference for humans to hold positions of power, and she had more ambition for a Council seat. I was jealous that the Emperor himself selected her over me. But working under her pushed me toward this position.
(I hate that she has a professional rival on the Dark Council but at least Acina is content to be rivals from afar. -CT)
33. If you could only have three things on your life bucket list, what would they be?
Assist with a diplomatic mission on Asation (will require some planning due to the climate, but I would like to watch a moonrise on one of the black sand beaches). Expand the Archive’s Arkanian collection. Find formal robes that actually flatter my figure.
(She’s being facetious about that last one, I think. She just doesn’t want to limit herself to three things, because she doesn’t want to ever stop what she does. -CT)
34. What’s the worst decision you’ve ever made?
I sometimes worry that leaving home to train under Karrid was my worst decision, but I can’t let myself fret about that too much, can I?
35. What’s something you’d consider unforgivable?
I will forgive most things. Well, maybe not forgive, but get over and move on from. It isn’t worth my time to get hung up on whether or not I have forgiven someone for some wrong they have committed against me.
36. If you choose to get married one day, what would your dream proposal scenario be?
I wouldn’t need any grand gesture, I’d just need for someone to mean it. I hardly expect that I’ll be getting married though.
37. What’s the most loved you’ve ever felt?
I feel loved when I’m being taught, especially if it is something important to the person doing the teaching.
38. What would your dream home look like?
I already live in my dream home. I have a suite above the Archive, and while it is small, I have everything I need. There’s natural light, it’s cool in the evenings, it’s convenient for my work. Sure, the storms take some getting used to, but it’s comfortable, and it’s enough.
39. When’s the last time you felt inspired to create something?
I don’t really create. I curate what others create.
40. Have you ever experienced a “friendship breakup"? What did it teach you?
I have not had many friendships. I have had… alliances, and some of those have come to necessary ends when neither party stands to gain anything any longer. From these, I typically learn some of my own strengths and weaknesses, things I can do on my own that I thought I needed to depend on others for… things I was certain I could handle on my own that it turns out I ought to rely on another for...
41. Who was your first friend, and are they still in your life?
As I mentioned, I have not had many friendships. I try to be friendly with the visitors to the Archive to ensure that they feel welcomed, but I am not really able to cultivate friendships with them in my role. I would like to think that I am friends with Chihdo, but she is my employee, so there is a dynamic at play that might make her give a different answer.
(Of course I consider Loremaster Kirnah a friend, and I’m not just saying that because she’s my boss, but she really does need to get out of the Archive more often. -CT)
42. Would you ever consider being in a long-distance relationship?
I am currently in one, I suppose. We met when she was visiting the Archive for research, and she… captivated me. We don’t get to visit each other often, and it is sometimes hard to say how serious we are. But she has made the trip here for non-research purposes.
43. What do you think the best way to resolve conflict is?
Directly. Stop it before it becomes conflict if you can.
(This only applies if the Loremaster is resolving conflict for someone else. She will avoid conflict that only impacts her until she or the other person dies.)
44. How did your parents meet?
I never thought to ask while I was still living with them, and I’m not really in contact with them anymore, so I don’t know.
45. Do you feel that you have a healthy relationship with the holonet?
I think so. I don’t spend much time on it, just enough to be kept abreast of what’s going on in the galaxy at large. Some of the younger staff are much better versed in the holonet than I am.
46. Who’s been your favorite teacher?
Is it trite to say “experience”?
47. What are your favorite childrens’ names?
I’ve never really thought specifically about children’s names, since I’ve never intended to have them. But I did have to think for a while about what I was going to call myself when my master and I decided that I had outlived my birth name and deserved to rename myself something that fit me better. I don’t know that I would burden a child with the name “Eleison,” but I like it well enough for myself.
48. What do you think you’ll be like in old age?
I hope I’m still adventurous, and that I’m still willing to try new things as long as I’m able.
49. What’s your favorite thing you own and why?
I do try not to tie myself too strongly to my physical belongings, because I know that no matter how well I care for them, things may break or fail or be lost. I've preserved a great many items for the Archive’s collections, but those will eventually all be gone - everything physical we have stored here will eventually decay in some way, and even our digital records are not guaranteed to be permanent. But I love every item in our collections for the knowledge and enrichment that they provide our visitors.
(It’s her pike. She is so dedicated to her saber studies, and she cares for her pike more carefully than a living thing and meditates on the crystal regularly to keep it attuned to her needs. Her master convinced her she would never be a strong combatant, so the fact that she is so talented as a fighter is very important to her. -CT)
50. What does friendship mean to you?
Having not had many close friends, I don’t know that I have the best understanding of the concept. But my understanding is that when one seeks friendship, they are seeking trust, honesty, companionship, support, and validation of each other. I am curious to see what a friendship with you might hold, Master Nightstar.
