The Continued Erosion of British Democracy

In May 2021 it was reported that:

“More than 2m voters may lack photo ID required under new UK bill” (Guardian: 11/04/21)

Although there was no evidence that our electoral process was in anyway flawed, being abused or interfered with, the right-wing Tory Party decided to introduce voter ID. US civil rights groups, who know something about Republican interference with the democratic voting process, have called what the Tory Party is doing “voter suppression".

In other words, the Tory government has introduced a legally binding voter requirement that has the effect of potentially  denying millions of the electorate their right to vote The fact that this group of voters – the young, the poor, the homeless, - are demographically more likely to vote Labour or Liberal Democrat is not a coincidence. This is a blatant attempt at ballot rigging.

Am I exaggerating? Possibly, but it is very odd, that older voters, who demographically tend to be vote Conservative, can use their bus passes as proof of identity, whilst students, who demographically tend to vote for more left-wing parties, are not allowed to use their student cards as proof of ID. 

 On top of the 2 million people estimated to have no photo identity at all, you can add those who do not know they need a valid form of photo ID to vote. Research shows that 25% of those born after 1995 do not realise they now need photo ID to be able to vote.

All of these figures and statistics are guess work at the moment, derived from various polls looking into the problem. Come voting day, and post electoral analysis, we should know exactly how many people will have been disenfranchised by these new rules. Well, that is what you would expect but this isn’t so. Sunak has no intension of  calculating how many voters don't have a "valid" photo ID.

A Texas GOP state legislator wishes to ban public colleges and universities from serving as polling places. It just so happens that a large public university exists in her legislative district. 🤨

Republican Rep. Carrie Isaac recently introduced a bill which would ban polling locations at public universities.

This would make it more difficult for students to vote.

Isaac represents Hays County just south of Austin, where Texas State University is located.

While her bill would make it more difficult for college students to vote, Texas A&M Kingsville Associate Professor of political science Travis Braidwood said college campuses tend to have a lot of people live near them who aren't students.

"Potentially shutting them down anyway could also deprive other voters access to those voting places," he said. "It's really unfortunate. If anything, you want to expand the franchise of voting, not restrict it."  

3NEWS received recent voting statistics from the Nueces County Clerk's Office that gave an account of the number of voters at area universities.

Last November, 2,364 people voted at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi while 3,204 voted at Del Mar College.

"So really, this raises the other question, if it isn't voter fraud, is this an attempt to suppress certain voters, particularly young voters?" Braidwood said.

Assistant Professor of political science for TAMU-CC Sanne Rikhoff said that colleges have long been at the center of discussion when it comes to polling locations.

Democrats have won the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections going back to 1992? THIS is the only time since 1988 that the Republican party has won the popular vote. George W. Bush did not win the popular vote in 2000. The Supreme Court ordered that votes stop being counted in Florida and handed the victory to Bush.

Donald Trump has never ever won the popular vote. The electoral college handed him the victory in 2016, less than 15,000 votes across three states decided the election. Hillary Clinton in total won about 3.7 million more votes than Donald Trump. Trump HATES hearing this number. He hates even more that Joe Biden got about 7 million more votes. He hates even more that you bring up the fact that he lost his midterm elections for his party in 2018, badly. And that the "Red Wave" in 2022 did not happen because of backlash at his Supreme Court. Or that in 2023 voters continued to reject his Supreme Court at the polls.

He knows, the Republicans know, that if more people vote, they lose. They don't want small d democracy. They want authoritarianism. They want to suppress it.

So when you get cute about not wanting to vote, you're not doing activism. You're surrendering.

Why is no state intervention possible? I've heard someone talk about enacting the "14 amendment". The current president Biden is a democrat, no? Is it just unwillingness or are there other forces blocking a federal intervention.

I mean every Florida bill but especially the kidnapping one is unconstitutional, isn't it?

I'm not an expert on U.S. politics, but as best I can tell the Biden admin is currently legally challenging other anti-trans laws in at least one other state, likely to set a legal precedent to later challenge laws in places like Florida. Because we have several court circuits (based on geographic region) to handle cases like this, they're likely challenging another state's anti-trans laws bc it's on a circuit more likely to produce an outcome protecting trans people, which may make later challenges in other circuits more likely to succeed. Honestly our political system is a complete clusterfuck right now. Seats on the Supreme Court are filled by fascists, so taking a case to the Supreme Court would be incredibly risky bc the outcome is likely to be horrible (see Roe v Wade). Democrats are still playing by the rules and losing because Republicans have largely descended into fascism and don't care about rules.

Just like anything else, it comes across to me as though Democrats will not pull out all the stops to address this as the next election approaches, so that they can say you must vote for them so they can fight it once (re)elected. And whether or not we believe they'll actually follow through, the alternative is outright fascism, and with our political system no third party candidate is actually viable.

I have no idea if federal intervention is impossible, or if perhaps they think doing so would incite much worse. Despite what I said above, I think a major concern is that DeSantis is likely to be the Republican candidate in the next presidential election. If the Biden admin directly swoops in about Florida's anti-trans laws right now, that's what DeSantis will build his presidential platform on. Look at the government overreach! Look at how they're forcing us to allow the corruption of our children! And unfortunately, even though it's 100% bullshit, that's exactly the narrative that will invigorate a base who already succeeded in electing Trump. Trump was an ineffectual buffoon out for his own enrichment, but DeSantis is a calculated madman who aims to create and lead a christofascist state. A DeSantis presidency would be TERRIFYING. Everything currently happening in Florida would start being pushed through at the federal level. So while I retain my skeptical criticism of the lack of federal intervention in Florida, I also recognize that to do so right now could potentially produce even worse outcomes on an even broader scale.

Like I said, it's an absolute clusterfuck here. 😭

To sum up, I don't know enough about the legal intricacies of this discussion to put forth an accurate assessment. I personally feel that the Biden admin isn't putting forth their full effort to address this human rights issue. Florida's recent actions point to a plan of trans genocide, no exaggeration. I also recognize that the lack of direct federal action might be a strategy to limit the ways in which DeSantis can demonize the federal government to rally his base in support of his inevitable presidential campaign. If 70% of American adults vote, the Democrat wins by a landslide. If 75% of American adults voted--and voted regularly in every election--the Republican party would cease to be a significant force in American politics.

This has been known for decades. Republicans will show up and vote no matter what; a very high percentage of Democrats and left-leaning voters will only show up if the candidate in question is perfectly in line with their views. That's why we have a Congress that is dominated by Republicans despite most of the country not liking them, and that's why we have most of the political problems that they do. By waiting for a political candidate who is good enough, you are directly ceding power to the people who are making the world worse.

Elections are decided by the people who show up. If you do not show up to vote, your vote does not get counted. If politicians want to get re-elected, they have to listen to the people who will vote for them. If they try to listen to the people who don't regularly vote, they are far more likely to lose re-election than if they listen to the people who show up every election. And conservatives show up every election. If liberals and leftists changed our voting habits and voted in every single election--voted for the furthest left candidate in the primary, and whoever got the Democratic nomination in the general election--we would prove ourselves to be a voting bloc worth listening to and the party would move left in response.

You want a candidate who perfectly fits your vision and ideals for what America should be? That doesn't happen in a vacuum. That takes work, and the most basic level of that work is showing up to vote now and every time there's an election to vote in.
