haikyuu boys when you have writers block :

characters: akaashi keiji, iwaizumi hajime, oikawa tooru (and g!n reader)

a/n: this is ironic because i'm in writer's block and trying desperately to get out of this, so apologies for the quality <//3 (also i suppose this is the first time i've done something like this, so i'd love feedback!)

AKAASHI KEIJI understands how it feels to want to write, only to have nothing come to your mind. He’s seen the way you’ve been staring at your computer for the past while typing rapidly, only to erase the words once they’ve been written. He also noticed the way your face contorted into an expression of thoughtfulness, yet also resignation as you continued your assault on the keys, never once settling on the words that would allow a spark. He’d try to help by bringing you a glass of your favorite beverage, sitting next to you as you lean on his shoulder, and offering his commentary on any and all ideas you had. He’d also be more than glad to offer his playlist, humming gently at lyrics that would surely prompt your thoughts. It’s when you finally have that excited gleam in your eyes as you settle on the words you want to write that he’s finally satisfied.

IWAIZUMI HAJIME knows that you have good ideas, but is at a loss to understand how you could...run out all of a sudden. When he catches you staring at the keyboard, fingers unmoving as you look away from the computer in deep thought, he’s intrigued, leaning over to catch a glance of your document, only to find...nothing. That’s when Iwaizumi knows you have writer's block, and that’s when he decides to try and help. He’d point out the colors of a room, experiences he’s had, and even recount funny memories he had with the volleyball team if it meant to inspire you. When you finally type your first word onto the document and grin up at him, that’s when he knows he did his part.

OIKAWA TOORU would see you struggling and immediately jump to action. He took pride in your writings, the same way he took pride in his sets, and he would be damned if he didn’t help inspire you. It would start with him sitting gently at your side, asking if there was anything at all that he could offer, even giddily describing the way it felt to eat milk bread, but if all failed, he had a foolproof method. He leaned over to capture his lips in yours, giving you one of the most movie-worthy kisses he could muster, and pulled away with the widest grin. It was only when your document was filled with a similar situation to the one that had just occurred that Oikawa walked away, feeling like he had won the biggest prize. (and he did, sort of, considering the kiss was now based off of his)

summary: oikawa knew that he was happy, so then why was it so difficult to preserve that feeling?

pairing: oikawa tooru x g!n reader

warnings: a lot of oikawa's inner thoughts, mentions of self-doubt

a/n: so this was a very self-indulgent fic (inspired a lot by this word and perfectly wrong by shawn mendes) and kind of encompasses a lot of feelings that i've been experiencing sometimes, but i feel like this was one of the things i've written that i'm kind of happy about ! i hope you enjoy this <3

Happiness was a feeling that was always difficult for Oikawa to identify. There were moments in which he could confidently taste the sensation on his tongue, a golden sort of taste that brightened his soul from the inside out, but other times, it was almost indecipherable to the other emotions that he seemed to find.

Why was it so complicated?

He often found himself sitting late at night, wondering how, if anything, people seemed to find glory in every glance, while he had to spread himself thin just to catch a glimpse. It was a question that drove him in circles in some of his lonelier moments, a constant reminder to the way he could never find the same sort of...fulfillment as others did.

It was something that bothered him with his late night practices, serving ball after ball across the gym, until the burning in his muscles was enough to drown out the feelings of inferiority he seemed to feel.

Happiness was as good as an illusion. To Oikawa, the feeling was far too short lived, far too fleeting to even be considered as a reality.

The day he discovered what happiness could be, was the day he met you.

It had been a normal day by all standards, the sunshine casting it’s glow delicately onto the buildings and the numerous sakura trees that lined the entrances of Aoba Johsai. It was a lovely spring day, one with the type of breeze that struck a freshness into everyone’s hearts, as well as their minds.

He liked these types of days for the simple pleasures he could indulge in. Eating his milk bread, he could pretend for a small moment that he was just another highschool boy, somebody who could make fun of Iwa-chan while being made fun of by Makki and Mattsun. He didn’t need to shoulder the expectations of the world, but he could still reach for the stars, and even hold one in his hands. It was why these days brought a rare sort of feeling, and it was why he managed to treasure them when they came around.

It had been on one of these days where you had strolled into the gym during practice, a concentrated, yet polite look on your face as you handed their coach your manager application, a gentle smile on your features when it had been accepted. You had done your job as manager to perfection, and he felt the morale of his team increase with every praise you sent in their direction.

Never him though.

He knew his sets weren’t as accurate as Kageyama’s, but they were still consistently improving. He didn’t expect praise from anyone, and yet found himself doubting his abilities when your calculated eyes didn’t make a comment on them. It was a neutrality of sorts. You never wrote it as a point of improvement, yet never complimented them.

Did that mean he was average?

The darkness enveloped his surroundings as he served again, his knee straining uncomfortably. He had been in the gym for hours now, doing anything, to get his mind off the precedent of facing Shiratorizawa the next day. It was a thought that nagged at him.

What if he wasn’t good enough?

Oikawa was supposed to be happy. He was happy for sure. His team had won the earlier matches, and cheers of their school name and the sight of his school colors was enough to send a wave of warmth and pride straight to his chest.

The way he felt defeating Tobio was one he savored continuously, the very thought of him beating one of his own demons fueling his morale incredibly.

So then why was it that he felt this way still?

Ah. No matter how many victories he held in his pocket, he could still never shake the way he always managed to lose somewhere else. He won against Tobio due to skill and observation. Was that really him and his team? Or was it just the circumstances?

A final serve over the net had him kneeling down, a million thoughts enveloping him at once.

Happiness wasn’t supposed to feel like this.

He wasn’t even sure what it was supposed to feel like. All he knew was the way he picked apart the scenarios, wishing time after time that the feeling would linger long enough. Call him goal oriented, but surely his ambition would allow him to truly appreciate the way something seemingly light hearted and accomplished would be like.

“Oikawa. Are you okay?”

He suddenly looked up, only to find your concerned face across the gym. You jogged over to him, water bottle in hand as you examined his position. He was on the floor now...somehow.

When had he fallen over?

“I’m alright Y/N-chan.” He smiled charmingly, “What brings you here now?”

“You’re lying,” you sighed, tossing him the water bottle. “Drink this, and then try that sentence again.”

He hesitantly took a sip of the water, feeling it soothe his insides until suddenly, he had downed the whole bottle itself. A glance in your direction saw him identifying a knowing look in your eyes as you smiled back at him, almost gently.

“You have to rest before the game tomorrow you know,” you chuckled, joining him onto the floor. “Why do you do this to yourself?”

“Why are you here?” Was what he asked instead, watching the way your expression never changed. “Aren’t you supposed to be at home?”

“Iwaizumi-kun told me something like this could happen,” you admitted, “I hoped I wouldn’t find you here, but here we are.”

He found himself brightening slightly at the thought. He knew that Iwaizumii cared. Behind the gruff and tough persona he put on, he cared deeply for everyone he was close to, always worrying for their well being and putting all of himself into ensuring that.

He must have told you about all the past times he’s been in situations like these.

But then why was it you that came? You were one of the smartest students in their class, and even despite that, you somehow made time to juggle all your other obligations.

He was important....to you?

“I’m here because I care about you Tooru,” you said, hesitantly ghosting your fingers over his cheekbones. “Please, don’t internalize what you’re feeling. I’ll provide you answers to anything you ask me, but please, just speak your thoughts. They’ve been troubling you, and that troubles me to know that.”

“What does it take to feel content, Y/N?” He questioned, feeling his confidence spike momentarily. “What is contentness when there’s always something new to climb for?”

“It’s where you can look at your achievements and feel like you’ve done something worthwhile.” You smiled, “But there’s something deeper than that. What makes you overwork yourself when you’re one of the best?”

“I’ve never been good enough to get completely to the top!” He groaned. “There’s always been obstacles and a victory...it makes me happy but it never lasts! Why can’t it last?”

“Hey,” you said, leaning slightly closer, “Maybe it’s because you never believe that you deserve the happiness you feel. I think you deserve this and a whole lot more you know.”

He turned his head upwards to meet your eyes, reassuring and genuine at his predicament. Perhaps what you had said had some truth to it.

Yet he still felt something weighing him down.

“I just want to feel on top of the world for real one day,” he admitted, exhaling a breath he didn’t know he had been holding. “Yet anytime I try to, it always just disappears. I’m practicing so maybe we have a chance at winning tomorrow. I’ve tried so hard, but somehow the talent always beats that.”

“Tooru…it’s alright to let it out you know.” You placed a hand gently on top of his, a hesitant act that he found quite endearing. “How long have you felt this way?”

“Always do,” he mumbled, “And I feel pathetic for it. Y/N-chan, is there something wrong with me?”

“No way!” You argued, the passion ever so present in your eyes. “You devote all of yourself to this. You are worthy of all good things. I swear it.”

“I can’t bring myself to feel that though.” There seemed to be a tension building up into his chest and his eyes.

“Your team believes it. All of your fans too.”

He met your eyes again, watching your breathing slow. “What?”

“They believe you deserve the world.” you affirmed, your mouth set into a straight line of seriousness. “And I think you do too.”

Underneath the dimmed lights of the gym, your hand a gentle anchor atop his own, Oikawa finally broke down.

Perhaps happiness was the feeling of being loved.

He realized that as long as you were beside him, that feeling would never fade.

trope: strangers to friends to lovers <3

how we met: it was completely by chance, but god was it a good coincidence! the day we met, i was at the library with a bunch of books on stars and constellations (as one does) and writing poems out based on the content that i found. just as i was about to leave, i bumped into someone who was in the same aisle and found keiji clutching a book >> specifically “pride and prejudice” i told him that romance books were overrated for the most part, but that the book he was holding specifically held quite the unique story and then left him there. from that day onwards, we continued to see each other at the library and introduced ourselves, swapping book and music recommendations! our intent at first was to remain friends, but that wasn’t exactly the case ;)

how we fell in love: the process was slow, gradual, and very very fulfilling! our conversations at the library used to be surrounding many academic topics, as well as worldly lessons we picked up. amongst them, is the reason why i thought romance was overrated because keiji can (and will) appreciate a good romance book every once in a while. i eventually divulge that i have difficulty trusting people because they all leave me in the end, and that's why i can't trust anyone with my heart. from that day onwards, keiji puts in all the effort to make sure that i can feel safe with him and show me that there is good in people out there. all these efforts that he took made me catch feelings, like taking me to the cool places he found near campus, and also exploring tokyo with me. he never thought i was a burden to him, even when i spoke about some of the things that plagued my head, and that was what was so touching to me. we ended up going to tokyo disneyland together, and looking at the polaroids we took, realized that we were in deep! that's when we decided to confess, and began dating :)

dating life: when we first started dating, a lot of our classmates were relieved because we had pined for each other for months and never did anything about it till recently (blame me for being clueless when it comes to my romances). keiji was always very attentive towards me, always giving me little sketches he made, or just holding my hand in the library when we are accomplishing things. he always knows how to make me feel better when i find nothing good about myself, and in return, i always help him know that just because he has flashy friends, it doesn't mean that he wasn't special (if anything he's the specialist for dealing with me). whenever we had free days, we sometimes hung out in one of our beds just cuddling or listening to music together, or going exploring in tokyo for all the cute sweet shops. our dates would always be places where we could make a lot of memories, and a lot of our favorite moments were simple things, like admiring a thunderstorm (and making out in the rain). whenever i had trouble sleeping, he'd wrap me into his arms in bed and we'd fall asleep, or he'd wake up to dance or bake with me in the kitchen (since that always got us to fall asleep after). all in all, he gave me the dream relationship i needed to feel loved again!!

how we met: the way rintarou and i met was nothing short of cinematic (especially the circumstances). we met at a party hosted by atsumu when they all played for pro-teams. atsumu had been bugging me to get out of the house for a while and told me that the party would be a good way to mingle, so i agreed to it. when i got there, there was a lot of people and just by my luck happened to get shoved into the crowd of girls that was surrounding him. i was a bit shocked to see him there (since he’s a pro-player and nearly not as goofy as atsumu) and he ended up grabbing me and declaring that i was his girlfriend to the girls (giving me a kith on the forehead) and the girls bought it because of what an actor he was. once they left, he thanked me and asked if we wanted to go outside, which we did! rin and i had a good conversation, but found ourselves being plastered in the headlines the next morning, declaring us as the cutest couple! rin couldn’t risk his reputation, so he asked if i could play along just for a few months. it was supposed to be a no-feelings arrangement, but it panned out a bit differently than planned ;)

how we fell in love: falling in love with rin was natural and unexpected (but in the best way possible). as per our contract (one that we wrote on a sheet of paper), we were supposed to stay together for two months and call off a “mutual breakup” and then could perhaps have a friendship. the two of us made an effort to be captured by the paparazzi only once or twice while grabbing food, but we went on these mini adventures which he said was for him to get to know me better so he could make our “relationship” look more authentic. i didn’t expect him to take knowing me so seriously. some days, he offered to come over and help me cook, even though he didn’t know much about cooking (to which i offered to teach him!) he always asked me about what i aspired to do with myself and dedicated serves to me at some of his games that i went to attend. one day, he decided that he was going to teach me to skateboard, so he grabbed the board and held onto me tight as i learned the ropes. there were moments of small jokes and laughter, and that’s when we realized that the flutter in our chests meant feelings. rin and i both tried to suppress them for a while, but they ended up showing in the small moments where he pecked my cheek because he felt like it, or brought me close to him when a guy wasn’t being too friendly. on my end, it came out through the bright smiles i’d give him and only him while avoiding any conversation involving him when atsumu pried. the two of us confessed to each other when we were out on a midnight drive in his car, and began dating from there!

dating life: dating rintarou was like dating your best friend (dare i say he was). when we started dating for real, atsumu would blab to anyone who was willing to listen that he was the one who set us up and that everyone should call him matchmaker tsumu (cue eye rolls from everyone). but really, when the media caught a hold of me and suna dating more privately (since we wanted to savor our moments), they were all over the place and gushed about us online! in our softer moments, some of our days would be sitting on the couch and cuddling, or he’d occasionally peak over my writing and see what inspired my poems. sometimes he’d show up to my house in the middle of the night to take me on a midnight drive, just like the type we did when we confessed, and just drive to nowhere in particular (because we had each other, and that was enough!) rin always understood my trust issues, and why i was hesitant to hand over my heart, but he showed me through his actions and playful teasing that he’d never break it. rintarou gave me the fun relationship to make me feel like i didn’t have to carry the weight of the world on my shoulders!
