the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"

just...imagine it's 2450 A.D. and English Lit students are regularly going into 100k debt writing postdoc theses on The Simpsons screenplays. the original animation hasn't even been preserved, it's literally just scripts and the occasional SDH subtitles.txt. they've been republished more times than the Bible

#due to the Great Data Decay academics write viciously argumentative articles on which episodes aired in what order #at conferences professors have known to engage in physically violent altercations whilst debating the air date number of household viewers #90% of the couch gags have been lost and there is a billion dollar trade in counterfeit “lost copies”#serious note: i'll be honest i always assumed it was english imperialism that made shakespeare so inescapable in the 19th/20th cent #like his writing should have become obscure at the same level of his contemporaries #but british imperialists needed an ENGLISH LANGUAGE (and BRITISH) writer to venerate #and shakespeare wrote so many damn things that there was a humongous body of work just sitting there waiting to be culturally exploited...#i know it didn't happen like this but i imagine a English Parliament House Committee Member For The Education Of The Masses or something #cartoonishly stumbling over a dusty cobwebbed crate labelled the Complete Works of Shakespeare #and going 'Eureka! this shall make excellent propoganda for fabricating a national identity in a time of great social unrest.#it will be a cornerstone of our elitist educational institutions for centuries to come! long live our decaying empire!'#'what good fortune that this used to be accessible and entertaining to mainstream illiterate audience members...#..but now we can strip that away and make it a difficult & alienating foundation of a Classical Education! just like the latin language :)'#anyway maybe there's no such thing as the 'greatest writer of x language' in ANY language?#maybe there are just different styles and yes levels of expertise and skill but also a high degree of subjectivity #and variance in the way that we as individuals and members of different cultures/time periods experience any work of media #and that's okay! and should be acknowledged!!! and allow us to give ourselves permission to broaden our horizons #and explore the stories of marginalized/underappreciated creators #instead of worshiping the List of Top 10 Best (aka Most Famous) Whatevers Of All Time/A Certain Time Period #anyways things are famous for a reason and that reason has little to do with innate “value”#and much more to do with how it plays into the interests of powerful institutions motivated to influence our shared cultural narratives #so i'm not saying 'stop teaching shakespeare'. but like...maybe classrooms should stop using it as busy work that (by accident or designs)#happens to alienate a large number of students who could otherwise be engaging critically with works that feel more relevant to their world #(by merit of not being 4 centuries old or lacking necessary historical context or requiring untaught translation skills)#and yeah...MAYBE our educational institutions could spend less time/money on shakespeare critical analysis and more on...#...any of thousands of underfunded areas of literary research i literally (pun!) don't know where to begin #oh and p.s. the modern publishing world is in shambles and it would be neat if schoolwork could include modern works?#beautiful complicated socially relevant works of literature are published every year. it's not just the 'classics' that have value #and actually modern publications are probably an easier way for students to learn the basics. since lesson plans don't have to include the #important historical/cultural context many teens need for 20+ year old media (which is older than their entire lived experience fyi)

As a commissioner, I love seeing how artists interpret and stylize my characters, but as an artist, I often agonize over if I should try to match the style of the provided reference or lean into my own style.

“I just don't like Gosho's use of ideas nowadays” do you have some examples? I’ve been feeling the same but I still don’t have like articulate thoughts on it

Well, 'nowadays' has been for. About ten years, ish? The most glaring example that always sticks out in my mind is the Sun Halo MK chapters, with the complete and utter waste of the very common fanfic tropes of 'Aoko gets suspicions' and 'Kid gets injured around someone'. But it kind of matches the general problem I have with his writing that I don't think used to be this bad: He's trying to stuff too much around the strict case-by-case structure (or for MK, introducing the heist-by-heist structure) without actually giving anything focus. (And for MK it's so much worse because he writes it so rarely, that he makes everyone cameo every time but they tend to just get hand waves to whatever drama plot gets instigated by Kid having his next heist.)

For DC, it's the whole. 1) Overarching plot with the BO and suspects and 'here's the available suspects for who's involved with the BO that we introduce one at a time at the end of cases and then maybe leave more clues about them during future cases'. 2) Dangling character or relationship progress and then constantly pulling it away, usually as a joke. 3) When we do occasionally get some of the major plot, it's all at once and then maybe mentioned once in the next case, but otherwise completely dropped. (Amuro and Akai and Kudo tea party tease also lingers as a 'Gosho is just evil at this point'.) Basically rigid structure that doesn't allow for much of the subplots aside from breadcrumbs.

For the current situation, it's also tied into interview comments. Which. have no bearing on the story until he actually uses them. But instead of even that, the movie gets exciting stuff instead and puts it in a giant limbo of is it meant to be canon or not, because no one has been able to settle on that for any movie, even as some details get connected back to the manga more and more.

It's bad writing. Gosho has been a bad writer for a long time, and it's kinda just getting worse. It's my opinion that it's because he tries to have his case after case after case (because mystery manga), and then stuff little bits of everything else in the seams, whether it works well with the case he's writing or if it's a good delivery or (more usually) it's just. Kinda tacked on.

It's partially because of time investment, partially because I have low standards of entertainment, and partially because I want to see how it all ends that I stick with DC. MK is. Similar, but hurts more because I really hate how it morphed into the DC structure when old MK had more you could do with it. Gosho will never drop his rigid case-by-case structure at this point, but it really would be better if he did at this point. Things need development that they're not allowed to have. Or at least smooth out the lines between his hints. And stop with Heiji and Kazuha, just. God. Stop. Is this how people felt about Kid appearances? I feel like at least when people were mad about Kid, they knew nothing was going to happen from the get go, the romance 'tease' is just painful.

#dc thoughts #It's really just a general feeling that I know Gosho /can't/ write drama that well #The writing style he's picked really doesn't allow him to; whether he /could/ write it well or not #So I don't like him going for an idea that sounds like a fanfic idea #Because it's never going to be as fun to watch as just. A fanfic. Because fanfic writers don't have to stick to genre or anything #/They/ can take time to explore character dynamics and implications and direct continuation of the idea into multiple chapters #Gosho literally /can't/ do it. At best; it's okay. At worst; it makes all the characters look so much worse #Because the characters are smart or dumb to allow whatever situation Gosho wants to happen /right then/#Because he can't wait too long to properly build up fun little ideas; he just smashes them in and moves on #(The Fairy Lip heist is also lingering. Most of what sticks in mind is Kid; as per usual)

Sam and Colby had recently found an old honeymoon resort that was abandoned. It was right on a main highway so they knew they had to be careful. Soon enough (after doing some research) they thought it would be a great video idea so they asked Y/N if she wanted to join to which she said yes.

Last time they hadn’t asked Y/N she was upset though she didn’t say anything. The whole week after the video she had been pouting and sort of silent towards the duo to which they confronted her about it. Her child-like personality didn’t make her speak out and that’s why she’d taken the silent but expressive approach.

Coby was wearing some black jeans and a nice pink hoodie Y/N had gifted him the Christmas before. Sam in the other hand wore a beige, shirt-sleeved hoodie with some black design on the front with some black jeans as well. To much surprise, no not really, Y/N wore more pastels. It didn’t matter how many times the guys would stress that more muted colors would help them lessen the risk of getting caught, she didn’t listen. So there she was wearing her jeans and pastel colored cardigan over her top.

Going over the game plan as they pulled over on the shoulder of the freeway, the three grabbed what they needed before walking cautiously to the front entrance.

“Ok so far I don’t see any cameras that could be set up but then again they probably wouldn’t be where someone could easily spot them.” Sam began to speak from next to Colby.

“Yea there might be security around too, there were a lot of surveillance signs around the property when we drove up. We should be careful.” Colby responded to which they both knew they should Olán out their way in and out before acting. Y/N, having the impatient nature, just quickly made her way to the entrance and slipped through a hole in the fence. Her steps looking like that of a child’s whose happily gotten their way with something. Sam and Colby both looked at each other as if they weren’t surprised at her impatience.

When the three were in the open roomed that seemed to be an abandoned warehouse (if anything) the boys started to set up their equipment as Y/N walked around with her hands behind her back, observing the graffiti as she bounced on her heels. When Sam called her over, she bounced back towards them and fidgeted her feet that were covered by her dirty lilac/pink vans. Sam went over a bit of the history and what each person would say before he started filming. Then they started the intro.

“Whats up guys it’s Sam and Colby!” The two said in unison and shortly after Y/N added,

“And meee!” As she leaned to be seen in the frame, holding up two peace signs. Sam went on to explain a bit of the history regarding when the resort shut down and what it had when it was up and running.

“Wait for real !? Wow I wish we could go ice skating! Have you ever been? I have and I liked it I would like to go soon. This place seems to have been really cool.” Y/N commented shortly after Sam explained the resort not only had a tennis court but also ice skating rinks and a few other things. When Colby whistled and thrust his his hips forward suggesting that people would ‘get it on’ at this resort, Sam looked down with a faux look of fear to which Y/N giggled at.

“I mean if I was getting married and came here with my fiancé, I think we’d get horny at some point and we’ll have sex. After all it’s a honeymoon resort duh!” Y/N would say shrugging her shoulder to which Sam and Colby would laugh at.

“Someone tagged ‘I smoke crack to go to heaven’ and another person responded with ‘Amen brutha’…facts.” Colby would point out some graffiti as they were walking out.

“So true…that would totally be me.” Y/N commented. As they continue waking along, the guys talked on camera about how the building they’re in could’ve been a sports complex because of the basketball courts they could see.

“DO YOU THINK THEY HAD TRACK?!” Y/N would shout and the guys would stop and look behind with the camera pointing at Y/N who stayed behind a few feet.

“I mean maybe ? Like an indoor track.” Colby responds as Sam records Y/N mimicking s track star running past them and to the opposite end.

“Wait wait, Y/N! Slow down. Colby heard some people nearby so we have to be careful about not getting caught alright ?” And as soon as Sam finished saying that an older man in a red shirt and a cap appears at the door in front of them. He starts saying that they can’t be there because of insurance purposes but overall treats them kindly and pretty chill.

The man they met walked them to their car as they asked a few questions about the place and what future plans the owners or any investors had for it. Funnily enough the man commented on how he hadn’t expected to have caught someone like Y/N there. And by that he meant someone who looked as innocent as her, though she was the exact opposite. When they parted ways, the trio got into the car to discuss what had happened.

“Well he was super nice and said the only reason he caught us was because he saw our car, which by the way we parked like right in front of the place so that was pretty stupid of us.” Colby explained to the camera in Sam’s hands. Y/N was leaning on the middle center piece from the back middle seat. Their game plan as then to hit up a place thirty minutes away after a change of clothes.

Quick cut scene to their little shoutout announcement and when they changed clothes in their hotel room. As Sam and Colby talked about epic games sponsorship, Y/N was seen on the bed in the space behind Colby with her feet up on the wall behind the headboard and her eyes glued to her phone playing some cat game. After that the scene cuts back to the three of them walking down a road on their way to the new location. After a few minutes of walking Y/N started bothering Colby to give her a piggy back ride claiming it had to be done so she wouldn’t get tired later on and it couldn’t be Sam because he was already carrying equipment and the camera. Colby (after a bit of persuading) gave her a piggy back ride though it cuidar have been for more than five minutes before they had reached the place.

“What if like..a car is just going so fast and they can’t turn or break so they just run us over? What would you guys think the probability of that is ?” Y/N would say from her place on Colby’s back. The two guys would go silent for a second before shaking their heads.

“Oh god that wasn’t dark at all..” Sam would answer sarcastically. They’d then book it through the fence, Y/N now on solid ground, and they’d go up far enough on the hill so they wouldn’t see the other side of the highway. As they were trekking Sam and Colby would point out the heart shaped bath tub thrown out to the side. As they both recorded each others reactions and comments they would then pan the camera to Y/N who was a few mere feet behind staring at the tub.

“I wonder how many people fucked in the-“ and Sam would cut her off by saying,

“okayyy moving on.” They’d then walk into the first cabin and after waking up the first few steps they see two rooms without doors. Both only have the window frames because the actual glass windows were shattered in the floor. As they walk into the bedroom, a stripped circular mattress is seen and a grand window with its shattered glass. Y/N would walk in front and turn to the camera, placing her fingers in a V shape against her mouth before sticking her tongue out. Shortly after she’d go towards the window though not to close as to step in too much glass. As Colby and Sam finish off their comments she’d turn around and look them fesd in the eyes when saying,

“We’ll this gives it a whole new meaning to an exhibition kink don’t ya think?” And she’d laugh along with the other two friends. This was what their whole exploration would have gone like before at the end they ran back to their car after getting (?) chased by security.

How would you change elvin fashion/or how do you think elvin fashion should be?

First order of business: leggings are OUT! yes this entirely personal, but they (or at least the girls) wear leggings with EVERYTHING and I simply could not and will not. And it's also incredibly plain and boring, and they can do better.

The main thing is just that practically none of what we hear described makes an impression. The only thing they do is some undescribed embroidery and added jewels (usually described as "jewel encrusted" or simialr, no further detail), and Sophie keeps saying it looks super fancy and wealthy, but I'm unconvinced. I will grant that the capes are more distinctly elven and memorable, but I think they can be improved upon as well

What, exactly, the distinct thing "should" be depends on preference. And it's difficult to make it universal since elves are around the world, and a group's clothing tends to reflect their environment. One option is since they're a light-based society, to have a lot of skin showing to better absorb the sunlight--yes, this is also partially personal because that's what I like, but since not all elves are in a warm environment this doesn't work great for all areas. Another route is to incorporate a lot of gold--thread and jewelry--into their dress to reflect that sunlight, though we do run the risk of overlapping to heavily with goblins.

We could also bring back the trick with Jolie's lumenite dress, expanding that more broadly to making glowing garments. Perhaps with other glowing materials as well, though I'm not sure what specifically. That might be the best option actually, as it can be incorporated into a variety of fabrics and styles for the various weather conditions.

Another idea would be, instead of the clothes specifically, to focus on the culture surrounding clothes. They have an overabundance of clothes, what if they frequently switched outfits throughout the day? Something for a brisk morning, then they switch to something else when it warms up, and back into something else for the evening then night, etc. We could get more specific for positions of power--e.g. what if the councillors, who are supposed to be the best of the best, change clothes to reflect the colors of the sun/sky throughout the day? To reflect their enlightenment and atonement to the world?

Like I said, a variety of ways to go about it even beyond this, but the main thing is right now they feel like human clothes with the words "embroidery" and "jewel" stuck on. We can improve upon this :)

(also would love to see clothing not tied to gender. more ubiquitous styles and choices across all sexes and genders. why hold on to human socially constructed separation?)

I'm gonna say it. Pokemon Legends Arceus is the best pokemon game, and I want another Legends game. I do not care what region. I just Want.

I'm not the anon from the first ask but wanted to thank you for your list of Owen recs! Started some today for his birthday and feel like my third eye is open lol, he's perfect as Mobius but I didn't realize how easy and natural his roles come across. The Wes movies you mentioned are new favourites I'll be rewatching often but The Big Year was a real surprise! It's one I would have skipped but was so comforting and reflective and in such an ensemble cast Owen was the best actor by far.

Also so glad you mentioned The Big Year because I totally agree about his acting standing out above everyone else's in a role that would've been really easy to make stereotypical, plus it's one hardly anyone's heard of but super cozy to watch so I couldn't help adding it in. Paint is a similar movie of his that made me reflect back on how I approach life while also wrapping you up in this soft, gentle world so I'd recommend that one as well 🥰
