i think it says a lot that this is my third time studying Van Gogh's art in a school/academic setting, but this is the first time that the message has been "Van Gogh created art despite his mental illness, not because of it". I vividly remember being on a school trip and looking at Van Gogh's Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, and our teacher telling us at length about the "vivid" and "disorganised" way he used colour, and how this was reflective of Van Gogh's mental state. I guess because that's the fun, exciting way to make middle schoolers interested in some 19th century artist's work ("he cut off his own ear! Gross!"), but... it's so reductive. It completely ignores who he was as a person – or at least, the person he presents through his letters and art – and flattens what he was doing with his work.
Did you know he actually didn't paint when he was at his most severely mentally unwell? I didn't! Did you know he was a voluntary patient? I didn't either! Did you know he was deliberately painting in a style (and choosing subjects) that was/were transgressive and went against the established grain of academic art in the 19th century? Because let me tell you, learning that completely upended everything I'd internalised over the years about Van Gogh being this epitome of the ~troubled artist~. It's both deeply fascinating to learn about and a depressing reminder of the made-for-consumption-but-not-acceptance conception of mental illness that pervades popular culture & society.

How to be more organised :
🌼 Prioritise work depending on deadlines
🌼 Use a realistic to-do list
🌼 Create a concrete schedule to determine your week (to know when your meetings are and when you have breaks)
🌼 Develop a daily or a weekly routine

12.15.
My English journey is just started.
But I have a lot of problems like a how to improve my listening skills, how to cover wide range of expressions.
And today, BBC news hit me. IT WAS TOO DIFFICULT to understand news for native speakers.
But I need to understand this level to take a creative writing course at uni. So I’m stick of high level English contents.
Honestly, I can’t see my future, where it the exit, when it ends. However I believe myself. I would reach unbelievable place.
I can do it <3
Also you can❤️‍🔥

A NEW BEGINNING
Hi Tumblr folks! It’s been a while since I joined the tumblr study community by following many strong and valuable students on my main account who, just like me, face daily difficulties.
Some of you really inspired me to not give up. Day after day you taught me that I’m not alone in this and we all together can achieve our goals by sharing our toughest challenges with each other.
Lately I’m struggling a lot with concentrating, that’s why I matured the decision to start my own study journal. I’m so so glad to be a part of this extraordinary sharing environment that you’ve created already.
PS: I apologize for my bad English skills in advance; it is not my native language. I’m sorry for every foolish mistake I’d make throughout this journey. Last but not least, welcome to my journal 💗🍃🖇️

Busy days.
05.05.2023
This week has been intense. I did so many things it felt like I was going crazy, but It’s also true that one by one it seems to me I’ve not progressed much. I spent my time mainly studying. I haven’t finished my molecular biology program yet, unfortunately I’m 2 days late on my study schedule. Soon I’ll switch to cell biology (easier for me than molecular), that I’ll exploit to make up for the 2 extra days I’ve spent for molecular bio. On Tuesday I started a new reading (📖The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry), which I believe will be fully read by the weekend. I haven’t decided yet what my next reading will be; just yesterday some books I ordered online arrived 🥹. My choice is between The Tea Planter’s Wife by Dinah Jefferies, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. But honestly, it may be none of them since a dear friend of mine told me about a series of fantasy books he’s read that I’d really like to start. Both on reading and creative writing (like this journal) I rely on the feeling of the moment rather than on a rigid schedule 🍃
Productivity:
almost finished my molecular biology program
started my second book after a huge reader’s block
Selfcare:
took my cat to the vet
spent time with my bestfriends (mostly chatting more than usual)
walked a lot after days of inactivity
a nice girl texted me and brightened my day <3
📸 Books I ordered online last week
🎧 Song of the day: Bellissima by Annalisa (🇮🇹)

💐 studyblr intro 💐
Hello! I’ve been on tumblr since 2015, but this is a new sideblog. I’ve been having trouble staying motivated recently and I hope that making this studyblr will help me out!
About Me:
🐚 Milo
🪷 they/them
🐚 INFJ
🪷 Virgo

Hobbies and Interests:
🌱 I love art! I enjoy learning about it and hope to visit an art museum someday. I also love to make art. I’ve been working on traditional portraits a lot lately but I want to try some more unique mediums, too!
🪺 I haven’t had the time to read much lately, but when I do I love nonfiction nature-themed books. I also like reading poetry!
🌱 I enjoy journaling. My goal for my current journal is to focus on gratitude for my day-to-day life because I have a tendency to get stuck in my head.
🪺 When the weather’s nice, I love going for a walk or running! Sometimes I’m on my own with my earbuds in, and sometimes I’m accompanied by a friend or family member.
Little Joys:
🌼 Annotating paperback books
🌸 The two-note call of chickadees
🌼 Early spring, when the snow is melting but it’s not all gone yet
🌸 Drinking soda on the front porch on a hot day
🌼 Marshland flowers (and woodland flowers!)
🌸 Predicting how long winter will be by looking at woolly-bear caterpillars

we often quote the "wheat is wheat" quote from Van Gogh, but this one has just come along and taken me out at the godamn knees:
Occasionally, in times of worry, I’ve longed to be stylish, but on second thoughts I say no – just let me be myself – and express severe, rough, yet true things with rough workmanship — Vincent van Gogh, letter 210
because isn't that just it? when you're making art – any kind of art – there's always always this temptation to fit yourself and your work into socially-acceptable boxes. to appeal to mainstream tastes. and at some point you have to say "this is me. this is my work. it may seem unpalatable and strange to you but this is the story i'm telling, whether you're ready for it or not", and then you have to cling to that resolve even when it seems really really hopeless, because you will find your audience, somewhere, somehow. it might just be a few people it resonates with, but someone will need your art and your vision, and you have to keep creating long enough for them to find it.

Sunday the 14th of August || 18:10
Hello!! I was sick for a bit and have also just been quite busy lately. I have a german exam on Thursday and am also currently working on a piece of crime fiction for English. I’ve been reading a lot more recently. I’m currently read Shuggie Bain and have about 90 pages left. Hopefully I’ll finish it this evening as there are many many books I have want to read next. I need to do a bit of history homework but that’s about it for tonight.
