Resources that have helped me in my classes!
(will add to this list as I find/remember more)
Classes I've used these in so far:
Honors Mechanics
Honors Thermodynamics & Optics
Relativity & Quantum Mechanics
Calculus I, II, III
Differential Equations
Introduction to Astronomy
Fundamentals of Astronomy
- - - - Youtube Channels - - - -
Physics
Michel van Biezen - oh my god I love him. I think he uses Sears and Zemansky's University Physics for example problems. His channel has 10k videos (!!!) and is very well-organized. He also lectures on math (from 5th grade to linear algebra), chem & organic chemistry, and astronomy.
Calculus
The Organic Chemistry Tutor - I mostly watch his videos on Calculus I-III and Differential Equations, but he also covers physics and chemistry.
Nancypi - Precalculus, Calculus I, and some of Calculus II. I barely showed up to calc lectures my first semester so she was a great help. also i have a crush on her
Michel van Biezen - I usually don't watch his math videos because his notation and techniques are different from what my prof makes us use
Astronomy
Urknall, Weltall, und das Leben - my literal dream channel. perfect levels of dryness, and videos are usually at least 45 minutes long. It's entirely in German though lmao
Michel van Biezen - covers important topics in introductory astronomy, and also does example problems (although I think they're all algebra-based)
- - - - Textbooks - - - -
Introduction to Cosmology - Barbara Ryden
Foundations of Astrophysics - Ryden & Peterson
University Physics - Sears and Zemansky
Calculus - James Stewart
Modern Physics - Kenneth Krane

- Sunday, Sept 24, 2023 -
busy, busy, busy.
This weekend has been chock full of catching up on work I got behind on (shout out ADHD, you suck ❤️)
My first physics exam is coming up, and shortly after is my first calc II exam. It's seriously time to get on top of my time management so I can perform my best!!

study diary —
I completely forgot to post yesterday - it was finally sunny outside and I took my calculus 3 final exam!
It went amazing! I was absolutely flabbergasted when I got my score today. I did not feel confident at all while I was working through review.
I am so happy to have calc off of my plate. Now I just have my physics final tomorrow, and then I’m done for the semester!
Today I’ve been working on physics review - nothing too fancy. I also watched an HST livestream which was very interesting!
The end is so close!!

the moral of the story is, that sometimes if you wait a couple weeks out of both laziness and hesitation to spend that much money, you too can wake up to emails offering you $25 opera tickets.

a question i see a lot is, why can't we define 1/0 to be anything?
so lets define it for fun
z := 1/0
so now z is the multiplicative inverse to 0. if you multiply them together you should get 1, like this:
1 = z * 0
already something is wrong here, we're multiplying something by 0, which should ALWAYS equal zero, but let's keep moving along
well 0+0 is still 0, so let's just do that for fun
1 = z * (0 + 0)
and with the distributive property, we can distrubute z to both of those zeroes.
1 = z*0 + z*0
and lastly, z and 0 are multiplicative inverses, meaning they multiply to 1.
1 = 1 + 1
so we get 1 = 2, which isn't possible
by the distributive property anything times 0 must equal 0. or else we get 1 = 2. meaning we cant define a division by zero, or else it breaks math. you can make a new set of axioms where division by zero works probably, but then division will basically mean something entirely different, and it might not even be useful.

Exams in 2 months! Classes are going at a faster rate than usual, and I realised I was slowly falling behind again.
I got in 3 hours 21 minutes of focus today, 40 minutes of which was spent in the uni library tackling calculus. A calculus rant under the cut!

Things I did today:
30 minutes of Duolingo
Continued with Physics module 4.
Exercise problems of differential calculus module 2.

🎧 - New Romantics — Taylor Swift
So far what I understood about calculus is that it needs a lot of analysis. What I do is:
I first look at the problem, and see if I can simplify it (using trigonometric identities or theorems)
Then I recollect and write down the list of formulae that seem suitable for that problem.
Once I get an idea, I start working on the solution.
Since I'm pretty new to the subject, one problem takes almost thirty minutes for me to solve — and that's okay. I've set aside an hour for calculus everyday, so it gives me time to analyse one type of problem everyday. This way there is consistency, and I don't lose touch.

Yesterday I went to the library at 9:30 am, came back around 5:00 pm. I like to spend my weekends there studying, even infact taking nap sometimes. I did some calculus which is there for us 1 years, It was getting hard with every exercises so I skipped to physics, which is my favourite subject.

October 10th, 2023 - Tuesday
Today I've studied some Calculus concepts I didn't remember very well, and did some research about my arduino project.
I also read again about yesterday lessons.

I thought you liked physics ?
yes I do. I love physics. I love it bc I was raised by a brainiac engineer mother who taught me to see math as fun from a very young age. and sometimes it pisses me off bc I don’t understand concepts immediately and my ego is HURT but then I humble myself and learn it and I’m back to adoring it again
