Well done, well done, well done!
Reminder that striking is good, striking works, striking allows you to fight for better rights and protections.
I've seen a metric fuckton of negative mainstream media takes on striking, which of course influences the public perception of it. I've had many strike sympathetic people in my life suddenly turn and call them 'unnecessary - don't they get paid enough?' (not the point but ok) Or 'God its so inconveniencing' (the point). I have a rule that if someone is on strike - I will support them - they must have a good reason and people are stronger together.
Striking works - and corporate that stands behind mainstream media does not want you to know that, because it means they'd have to start treating you like a human and not a faceless number on the payroll - people who are better looked after cost more, and they do not want to spend more than they have to. So they influence the media (tin foil hat a bit here but its fucking obvious)
So remember this - it fucking works. And if you go and get a job that has a union - fucking join it.
Well done SAG-AFRA, WAG, and all the other fighting unions.
Now for fucks sake, someone let Michael Sheen out.

THIS BITCH STRIKING
For those who do not know, I work at a hospital, and we are both criminally underpaid and understaffed. As of the 2nd of this month, our union put for the vote to its members asking us to authorize a strike, and as of this morning, the votes are in.
93% of union membership voted, and of that 93%...
95% voted to authorize the strike.
Now, of course, this doesn't necessarily mean we will be striking, only that the union has the authority to call a strike as part of their bargaining negotiation, but realistically speaking...yeah, we're striking. Everyone on every floor knows that we're going to be striking. The contract bargainers for the hospital have been trying to throw us crumbs and act like it's a feast we should be thankful for, all while refusing to even raise wages enough to match inflation.
Do you know what not meeting inflation means?
It means that, in effect, we're taking pay cuts every single year, because for every year that our wage stagnates, our dollar buys us less food, less gas, and all while rent is increasing by hundreds of dollars.
So yeah, there's no way the hospital isn't going to force a strike, because now that the vote is in, they'll want to try and do the same thing that AMPTP tried to do to SAG-AFTRA earlier this year. They'll want to try and starve us out and force us to cross the picket line to keep food on the table and to keep the lights on.
But it won't work.
We're going to strike, and we're going to win.

"Picketers across California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington who are represented by a coalition of unions walked off the job Wednesday. They are seeking higher wages and solutions to a short-staffing crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic, that has left workers feeling overburdened and run down."

FORD CAVES TO UAW STRIKERS. 38 MORE LOCALS JOIN STRIKES AGAINST GM AND STELLANTIS
United Auto Workers, which has had just under 13'000 of its workers striking against the Big Three Automakers: Ford, GM and Stellantis ever since September 15th, is calling on 38 more locals to strike.
The 38 Locals represent another 5'625 workers to strike against GM and Stellantis.
Ford, which has largely already caved, is giving up its two-tiered pay system, increasing its Profit-Sharing offer to 13.3%, restoring Cost-Of-Living increases it dropped in 2009, and has agreed to immediate conversion of all Temp employees to Full-time employees, as well as agreed to the Union's Right to strike over plant closings. And so, no other Ford Locals have been added to the strike.

Understanding Class Solidarity
Tumblr media
Prewriting this and putting it in a queue. Is Hollywood still striking?
Well, does not matter. Because I gotta talk about another important thing when it comes to leftist thought. Another thing that the capitalist system has kinda managed to very successfully distort. The concept of class solidarity.
See, no matter whether SAG AFTRA and WGA are still on strike when this is going up, the entire issue has shown this - though of course it also has kinda helped some more people to understand this, too.
Because the first reaction of many people upon those folks going on strike, was: "What are they complaining about? They are Hollywood! Hollywood is where the money is!" This was especially true for when the actors went on strike, because we kinda associate actors with being rich. Because we usually think of the likes of a Chris Hemthworth or a Scarlet Johanson, who get like millions per movie where they show up. But people obviously forget that most actors are in fact some random background faces, who barely scrape by. The big actors going on strike, too, is in fact a form of class solidarity.
See, capitalism has told us that the classes are like the middle class, the upper class and the lower classes. And, sure, yeah, those are kinda classes as well - and classism is very much based on this. On the economic standing of people and the marginalization of poor people is very much real.
BUUUUUUUT...
You know what the entire marxist theory says about the classes?
Yeah, there are only two. There is the owning class and there is the working class. And it turns out, that even quite a few of those multimillion dollar actors are in fact still working class, as they do not own the companies in which they make their money. And yes, note, some do. There are a couple of big wing actors who do in fact own the production studios they work under. But this is not true for all or even for most.
And here is the thing: The difference between the owning class and the working class is, that the working class works and actually produces value, while the owning class profits off that generated value.
That is also why the saying goes: "Every profit is stolen wages." And this is true, no matter whether the worker makes 25k a year, 100k, 500k or 3m. If they are the worker, they are almost by necessity exploited. Just that some get exploited a ton more.
To keep it with the film studios, because it is a nice example to have.
Who really made it possible for like Avengers Endgame to bring in 2 billion bucks. Was it Bob Iger (or Bob Chapek)? Or was it like the directors, actors, costume makers, set makers, camera people, technicians, CGI creators and what not? Who really did generate that value?
And understanding that is the core to understanding class solidarity.
The system right now is very interested in people not realizing it. That we actually all do have more in common with other workers, than we have with the owning class. That if we just all went on strike, that the owning class would loose everything.
The average person with their 40k/year office job does have more in common both with the B-List actor, who might make a couple hundred thousand per movie, AND with the black trans 20 something homeless kid working at Starbucks while living on their frined's sofa.
Because all three of them do not own the fruits of their labor. All three of them have their life dictated by people who own whatever they are working for.
Class solidarity is to understand this and to stand side by side with everyone who is striking and fighting for their right to get treated fairly.

It's with great difficulty that I put my pride aside here.
As a transgender man, currently living in the UK, it's hell. The waiting list of the NHS for my region is close to 6 years, my back is fucked due to binding my chest ("don't bind and exercise"... I work hospitality. I don't have a choice), to the point I ended up stuck in bed for 10h in tears due to spasms, unable to get an ambulance cause... the health system is not doing ok. I work in a café/bookshop; the mental exhaustion of having JK Rowling mentioned daily, debating trans rights to validating my existence, my family cutting all ties with me... it's rough mate. But it's life, my life.
I need help. If not to fund my transition going private (as this would average £1500 just to start...!), to at least afford a chiropractor for my back and neck so I can be able to move up to a full-time contract and save money, and for counselling.
Chiropractor is £40 initial cost for the examination, then £35 per treatment, which I'm hoping a course of 3 treatments should put me back on track.
Counselling is £20 a seance via my local volunteering counselling group.
My Pa*Pal
Every little help, even just a reblog would be greatly appreciated.
For people not living in the UK and for more context : many industries are striking right now (as they should. Get a union people!), the NHS is crumbling down, the government is fucked but hey, Harry wrote a book huh. Some people can't afford to put the heating on, people are queuing at the food bank and it's been 3 months that a friend of mine is sleeping on my sofa because the council, housing agents and homelessness emergency helpline are all backed up and virtually useless right now. Two other people I know had to face homelessness within the last month. Everything is ✨️fucked ✨️
I give back to the community the best I can : volunteering at my local LGBTQ+ charity, connecting people by having a coffee/chat monthly event to help reduce the isolation of elderly people, organising exhibitions about the queer history, bookfares... but it's only last week-end, when my back once again was being a pain due to the cold and humidity that I realised that I, myself, also need help, laying there in bed like a grumpy old man being so proud and stubborn it was low-key laughable...
So if you can help, thank you so much. If you can't, thank you for at least reading me ❤️
Fuck the government, fuck politics, strike like there's no tomorrow, fight for your rights, unionise, be loud, be proud, don't be a c*nt and hand in hand, I'll support you, you'll support me, and we'll get there together. Solidarity forever.

People saying on that NHS post there’s nothing we can do til 2024...
Voting is not the only way to influence the country you live in. In many ways, it’s the least effective way.
If you vote IDK, Labour, and think job done, you’re part of the problem.
The number one thing you can do to help save the NHS right now is to support the nurse’s strike, and the junior doctor’s strike. Will the aims of these unions solve the whole problem? Obviously not. But supporting the strikes sends a general message to the government about who’s side “the public” are on, and what the public will accept.
Things you can do to support the strikes:
1) Donate to strike funds. Long term strikes struggle, because people don’t get paid. Many nurses can’t afford to save much on their current wage. Many doctors come out of med school with crippling commercial debt and not in a good financial state. These things make it hard to strike. So if you can help people go on strike for more days, that’s super important.
2) Visit picket lines. Picket lines are in effect protests- if you’d go on a protest march for the NHS, then go and visit the picket line. Talk to whoever’s on the picket line and offer your soldiarity and support. This makes a huge different to striking workers. If you can bring those on the picket line hot drinks or snacks, this will likely be super appreciated!
3) Post about your support for the strikes on your social media. The mainstream media are trying to run with the message “no-one” supports the strikes. You can help combat this.
4) Similar to the above, phone in to talk radio, write letters to newspapers expressing your support of the strikes.
5) Challenge people who criticise the strikes. E.g. if someone says “They’re putting people at risk by striking” you can say “the Tories are putting the NHS at risk of collapse, so they have to do something”.
I’m sure those nurses who have been on strike will have more to add, as they’re the ones facing this directly!

I am incredibly happy to hear that the writers strikes have reached a favourable resolution! This is a fantastic win on their front and really does highlight the importance of striking and standing up for your rights.
Remember people, despite what corporate higher-ups want us to think - at the end of the day, the workers still have the power!

This does mean I have to get my ass in gear to finish my GO S3 fic before the actual S3 comes out - yikes!

Strike Update 2: Union Boogaloo
Sadly, the obvious has come to pass.
The hospital I work at, when presented with the strike authorization vote, opted to inform us that we could cordially go fuck ourselves with another insultingly meager offer that continued with their refusal to pay a living wage and staff the departments safely.
So, beginning the 23rd of October, we're going on strike.
I still don't have any info on a strike donation fund yet, but in the meantime, if you'd like to support your local authorial cryptid while they combat unfair labor practices while also writing about tragic disaster lesbians, you can donate at my Kofi or just subscribe to my Patreon! Anything will be helpful.
Hopefully, this strike gets the point across and doesn't last too long. I will continue to update as I learn more.
EDIT: Kofi link was messed up. Fixed it.
