In honor of Disability Pride Month, here's part 2 of a look at some of the characters in the Sundown story that have disabilities! Next up is Speedy.

Speedy lost parts of his ring and pinky fingers on his left hand due to an accident during a training exercise, but you'd never know that based on what he says happened. Though he makes light of the injury, recovering from it and learning how to function around the missing fingers was challenging for him.

After the training accident, Speedy and the squad were immediately thrown back into their programs, giving him no time to properly heal and adjust to the situation. This was especially difficult due to Speedy's specialty in dual-wielding DC-17s. Without the extra support the full fingers would provide, Speedy wasn't able to hold the pistol the same way he used to. This had an immediate effect on his aim, and was a blow to his self image since his sharp-shooting was the skill he was most proud of.

Not seeing any alternative, Speedy pushed through the difficulties and eventually trained himself how to make it work. This, however, led to persistent soreness in his hand and forearm due to the strain. This further contributed to the general pain caused by the injury, and he began experiencing more frequent phantom pain in his hand.

Speedy never complained or sought additional treatment in an effort to make it not seem like a big deal. He didn't want Kess to worry, and he didn't want any one to think he was weakened by it. It wasn't until after he became a Shadow Trooper that he felt he was able to truly process what had happened and look at ways to help alleviate some of his symptoms.

That didn't stop him from continuing to make up outlandish stories of how he got the injury, though.

It’s been a rough go for me for awhile. I got the first tattoo while in an abusive relationship and then this year has been an absolute dumpster fire of a year. I decided I needed to mark the time with a tattoo. I wanted something that would remind me of the strength I have and all that I have overcome. Covering up a bad memory with something positive also helped.

We are stronger that we know and “How we survive is what makes us who we are.”
