Strain

It might be mana, your physical form, the power of friendship, sanity, cyberpunk battery juice, the power of a totally not cursed weapon or anything else you might think of. Whatever it is, we will call it strain, and strain is fantastic for making a game more engaging. I like having a couple different strains that are affected by different things. 

When coming up with your strains, consider what makes sense for both your world and for your character. 

What increases this strain? What lessens it? Can it be lessened at all? What actions if failed result in this strain? Which actions always result in this strain? How much of this strain can you withstand? What happens when it's full? All the way empty? Does everybody in the world have this kind of strain? Is it represented by adding or subtracting? 

I like using a four-tiered pyramid for my trackers, with the places at the bottom being trivial and the place at the top being serious. When I fail at a task that results in taking a strain, the degree to which I failed (how many runes are upside down vs upright) corresponds to the level of strain. For example if 2 were upright, I would mark down a level 3 strain. If lower tier spots are full I can mark it off as a higher tier strain. Negative consequences happen when there aren't any spots to mark off a strain that I've taken.

Some other options for strain strackers include a dish with a set number of baubles you can remove or add, a string of beads where you slide beads from one end to the other, a coloring page you slowly fill in, or whatever else you want, keeping in mind the total number of strain will affect the urgency and balance of your game. Feel like things are too meandering and slow? Try lessening the total strain a character can take. 

In Melody’s case, they have a physical strain tracker for any bodily injuries and a tracker for how much attention they're drawing to themselves. When the physical strain tracker is full they will collapse and might go unconscious depending on the scene. Physical strains will move down a tier with a night’s rest. The attention tracker goes up when they perform and they earn more money if that tracker is more full. When the tip of the attention tracker is filled in the debt collectors' henchmen will be actively searching for Melody in whatever area they're in. A full day without performing will remove a single tier 1 strain. Two days in a row can either remove two tier 1 strains or one tier 2 strain and so on. Moving to a different town or city will reset the attention tracker to one tier 1 strain.

They also have three coloring sheets to track progress on the projects they promised to complete for others, while those only go up there's definitely a chance that something might restart that progress from square one. When one of those trackers fills up, it means that project of Melody’s is complete! To make these coloring sheets I looked at a lot of the more decorative bullet journals for inspiration. 

Today's spread is a current issue! 

Melody and Eyret make it to the city of Finas, to find the whole city in a tizzy. The largest church in the city has organized a protest against the city's decision to refuse aid to nearby towns currently suffering a drought. Melody decides to join the protest (coin, mouth, shield), which adds a tier 1 strain to the attention tracker, but they make good impressions with a few of the other protesters.

Turns out all is still not peaceful in the fandom... because when scrolling through the tags I see this:

@derelict-stranger / the user formerly known as thephantomporg84 up to their same old tricks again. I’ve seen them in the vergil tags doin’ their same old thing, shitting and getting butthurt on the dmc games, and reaching out to writers on tumblr (users kinda like me) in hopes to isolate them like what happened to me and @gottahaveamain.

You’d think at this point that they’d might have learnt something, but no - apparently not. It’s in one ear and out the other, by the looks of it.

So either - they still don’t understand the consequences to their actions and have an incredible lack of self awareness, they are dying for attention, or they’re a straight-up masochist.

My money is on the first one, combined with extreme immaturity and stupidity.

So, @derelict-stranger - here’s a final message, since you didn’t seem to understand the first time.

I’m not a traitor. If anything, Me and other writers are the ones who was betrayed - because what we saw of you was someone who was genuinely kind and took interest in our content, but we were blind to the toxic shit that came out of your mouth. You’re duplicitous, and you only act kind or play the victim when it’s convenient for you, and you lack the decency to apologise.

Secondly - me calling you out has done a service to people who were still getting disgusting anons when you took down your account and didn’t know who they were from. Now that we know that you have your current blog, it makes it all the easier to know that the negativity in the fandom hasn’t left.

Thirdly - me and the 40-50+ people on this site aren’t the disgusting psychopaths that you paint us at. It’s you who’s disgusting. None of us, except for you, have been actively hating on people online or been saying racist, ableist, homophobic, transphobic, death threats or rape threats on anon to people. We’re not cowards, like you. And if we did, we’d gave the decency to apologise and not use a) mental illness or b) our identity as an excuse. You do realise its hundreds of us, people who are doing great things vs. You - a lousy troll that has nothing else better to do it seems than to shit on people.

You do also realise that as you’ve sent more that 1 message on anon or hateful PMs to all 40-50+ of us, that gives us over 100-200+ nuggets of evidence to give into police as evidence of cybercrime - cause that’s a thing now. If someone on this site turns in this evidence, then it’s adios to your biochem job, which you kind of deserve - because if you’re gonna harrass that many people, you deserve to feel misery in return. So I read The October Man.

It was good. A nice case, and it served it’s purpose of introducing German magic policing very well. A very nice read.

Under the cut my spoiler thoughts:

I really liked that Tobias was a different character to Peter. He’s less curious, and also less excited about magic. Peter always wants to know how things work, and comes up with clever ways to exploit that knowledge later on. Tobias is much more... pragmatic, I think is a good way to describe it. Like, I feel like Peter would absolutely approve of a fire extinguisher as a protection against a potential practicioner, to disrupt their concentration, but I don’t think he’d come up with it like that. Or how he notes that if he gets to an old house without any Vestigia, he leaves and only comes back with his flame thrower. Peter would absolutely agree with the line of thinking that went into it, but he would still handle it differently, I think.

Tobias is generally much more comfortable with not knowing exactly how and why magic works, just that it does and what that means for him as a police officer. 

Also, I feel like Peter would have gotten endlessly side tracked with Kellys story about her human love and their daughter, both because of genuine curiousity and because he is now in the position of the human lover.

(Also interesting: Peter and Tobias seem to be in agreement that The Masquerade is going to have to go at some point, but I don’t think Peter would agree with announcing magic is real on national television. That could be a highly interesting conversation for them to have when they meet at some point)

Generally, I liked the difference between how the British police approaches magic to how the German police does. Like, Peter has to edit all his reports for the Met while also keeping his own reports for the Folly, while Tobias just does one report that goes to the KDA. The other police officers also seem much more comfortable with magic. Like, we didn’t see many high up bosses, but while neither Ziegler nor Förstner were particularly happy about magic at their crime, they didn’t have that strong distaste we’re used to from the British higher ups.

Part of that is, I think, down to the fact that the German police really doesn’t seem to bother with editing reports and the like. Especially Seawoll seems to dislike magic because he associates it with shoddy police work and lying on the records, and the Germans don’t seem to do that.

They seem to generally approach the whole thing much more pragmatically, and way more organized. Like, there are channels in place for what to do with a suspected magical crime, Tobias is encouraged to teach others how to spot Vestigia, all the proper response plans that Peter is painstakingly working out right now are already decided and delivered and Ziegler, who as far as we know never had to deal with magic before, has read it and knows the procedures. Peter would probably really love to get a peak at those procedure plans. Also the research department. Peter would kill for a proper research department.

On the other hand, all that community building that Peter does seems mostly nonexistant. That makes sense, given that Peter mostly works in London, where he can actually regularly interact with the same people, while Tobias works all over Germany. Also, while Peter has to overcome lots of colonial and racist history that most of the demimonde remember all to well from the Folly, Tobias has to deal with the history of the Ahnenerbe and the Nazis in general, who seem to have gone full on genocidal on supernatural entities like Rivers as well. Which makes sense, given that... Nazis.

(I also really liked that Tobias boss the Director pointed out that when you start classifying supernatural people and cataloguing them you’re back to the Nazis pretty damn quick.)

I really liked Vanessa too, and her enthusiasm about magic. It felt very real, and closer to Peters attitude, though I don’t think she has that scientific curiosity either. Her wine knowledge was also delightful, and liked her partnership with Tobias. I can totally see those two become best friends. I did also notice that while Tobias actually questioned her acceptance of magic and thought about how the research department would look into her family background for magical connections because of it, that question was never answered. She gets transferred at the end, so I don’t think anything particularly malicious popped up, but I do think that that thread was left hanging for a reason.

Kelly and Morgane were amazing. I’ve got such a soft spot for all the Rivers, and Kellys story and just how she approached everything in general was awesome. I liked that she made it clear she hasn’t forgotten anything, but she also was somewhat willing to work with Tobias and Vanessa. I also liked the idea that she kept an eye on her daughter and her descendants for centuries. Makes me wonder why she decided to stop when it came to Grandpa Stracker. Maybe the bloodline was just too diluted? Or did Grandpa Stracker do something to offend her? And baby river godess Morgane was an absolute delight.

Also very nice was to know that Tobias is so very well informed about the British magical police, while Peter and Nightingale haven’t gotten any idea about the German one. Though, there seem to be weird holes in that knowledge? Like, Tobias knew that Peter would have gone about watching the malignancy much more scientifically, suggesting they’ve got decent personality profiles, but he didn’t get Kelly’s reference to Peter’s relationship with Bev at the end, which I feel like it would have definitively come up at some point, given that I think this takes place after or around Lies Sleeping, and at that point they’re in a serious relationship and have been for a while. And the KDA is definitively aware of the London river godesses, what with the London paradigm and all that. So for them to not know that Peter is in a relationship with a river godess seems strange.

It made for a nice laugh, though, so that was good.

Also, picturing the face that Nightingale makes when he realizes that with taking Peter as his apprentice he kind of restarted magical teaching all over Europe (or at least Germany and France, what with the reference to the Academy being open again) is all sorts of fun.

Makes me wonder about the five active practicioners that the Director mentioned, though. I mean, clearly, Nightingale is one. Varvara wasn’t all that subtle in the last years, either, so she makes two. If they know that the London riots were started by a revenant it’d make sense they’d know about Faceless too, so Chorley makes three. (Though, depending on when it exactly that book takes place, he might already be dead at that point). Does Peter count as practicioner already, given that he’s still an apprentice? My instinct would go to yes, given that by Lies Sleeping he’s definitively on a skill level that would make the magical community take notice, but I’m not sure. If yes, then Peter and Lesley are four and five. If not, Michael Cheung could be four. Lesley probably counts as practitioner anyway, because she’s now without any teacher but still a definitively magical problem. Plus Ladies Helena and Caroline. And several of the Little Crocodiles. It would be really interesting which of those the BND knows about, and which they don’t know about.

Also, what exactly did Abigail do to earn the epiphet “absolutely terrifying”? I really hope we find that out in her novella!
