Walking San Francisco & Thinking Out Loud . I took a lot of photos of Amanda and Nina on Sunday. What was really fun is that they are both photographers and designers. I really enjoyed collaborating with them. The photo in the middle is from Pier 7 and all others were taken at Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. Photo 1 they could tell I wasn't focused on them and they both gave me dirty looks. I got it right in pic 2. Pic 3 is black and white and orange to bring out flowering plants. Pic 4 is on Pier 7 looking North. Pics 5 and 7 are outside the door of the restaurant/activity building on Stow Lake where we lover the red and white pattern on the door. . I honestly thought I'd have extra time to edit the photos by curtailing my activities for a week or two. The word on the street is to plan to hunker down and avoid needless contact with others. I will post some fun photos from my photo shoot tour with Nina and Amanda over the next few days and I have another 55,000 cherry pick for posts for a few weeks after that. american parenting

Comme je débarque avec deux petites filles, je suis vite confrontée aux écoles, daycare, playgroups et voisines de quartier. 

Je dévore instantanément le livre “Bringing up Bébé”, l’histoire inverse de la mienne: une américaine à Paris qui observe, décortique et analyse le French parenting. Cela m’a permis de prendre conscience de ce que je représentais aux yeux d’un US citizen: une maman qui fait confiance à son instinct, s’habille se coiffe et se maquille et sait négocier une limite entre les adultes et les enfants. Tout moi quoi. Mouhaha. 

La première différence que j’ai observée c’est au square. Confortablement assise sur un banc au soleil en bouffant le gouter des filles, j’ai vu de mes yeux vu tous les parents faire des pâtés de sable, à quatre pattes caché derrière un buisson, courir en hurlant comme un possédé “pretending to be a monster, I’m gonna EAT yaaaaaaaa”... mais qu’est ce qu’ils leur prend?! Ils sont à fond, non-stop dédiés à leurs enfants. Avoir un enfant c’est redevenir un enfant, manifestement. 

Ensuite c’est à l’école, une maman qui vient chercher son fils et après l’avoir observé dessiner pendant 5 minutes (c’est long) lui demande: “And now Taylor, would you consider to put your shoes on?” Taylor: “Nope”. La maman: “All right sweet heart, let me know when you’re ready”. Je ne sais pas ce qu’elle se dit quand elle m’entend (sans me comprendre) donner des ordres sur un ton peu convivial à Zoé pour qu’elle enfile ses pompes fissa parce que je suis garée en double-file..?!

La Californie est une pouponnière: beaucoup de gens viennent de loin pour élever leurs enfants en plein air, se lover dans le lobby de l’allaitement, vivre librement en legging post-accouchement et bruncher dans n’importe quel restaurant kids-friendly. J’adopte l’esprit positif de l’école, la foule d’activités proposées, et je suis heureuse de voir mes filles épanouies ici, mais j’avoue, je n’ai pas fait exprès.

Un groupe Facebook me fascine d’un point de vue sociologique: MAIN STREET MAMAS, 100% mamans locales SF. Le forum de questions (que jamais tu t’es posées) donne un bon aperçu de nos différences culturelles: beaucoup de problèmes de co-sleeping tardif, d’enfants qui ne veulent pas porter de chaussures, mais genre jamais, d’allaitement qui dure 4 voir 5 ans...un vrai régal de galères parentales et lunaires.

SELECTION en vrac et non-exhaustives d’activités avec les enfants: 

PLAY HAVEN: un playground couvert conçu comme un grand espace de classe de maternelle avec mur d’escalade et de peinture, des jouets, plein de livres. Idéal un jour férié et pluvieux. On ne dépose pas les enfants, on reste là (typique), mais on peut s’installer avec son ordi sur une table et il y a une cuisine avec des capsules Nespresso et des petits snacks ;-) 

LA PETITE BALEEN: une piscine avec un petit bassin pour les cours de natation et un grand pour les familles. Ici, pas évident de trouver un cours où l’on ne demande pas aux parents de se mouiller...

HOUSE OF AIR: un grand hangar plein de trampolines géants répartis en catégories d’âges, à partir de 3 ans. Ca saute, ça résonne mais ça défoule bien les enfants!

CASTRO THEATRE - SING ALONG: à chaque “holidays seasons” le mythique cinéma de Castro met à l’affiche des grands classiques Disney en version karaoké. La salle entière est déguisée et déchainée,  il y autant d'enfants que d’adultes gays, une expérience adorée et unique.

MISSION DOLORES PARK: un des plus beaux parcs avec une siouperbe vue sur la ville, un playground design et un toboggan géant. C’est sympa de se faire un picnic sur les grandes pelouses (note: ça sent grave la weed).

STOW LAKE: un petit lac charmant dans le Golden Gate Park, on peut louer des pédalos ou une barque, se balader sur l’ile, observer des tortues, des canards et que sais-je encore. La Boat House est aussi un restaurant avec des tables au soleil le long du lac.

OFF THE GRID: chaque dimanche, sur une grande pelouse dans le Presidio, une vingtaine de Food Trucks et un DJ animent la journée, les familles s’installent sur une nappe entre amis, très californien.

Et tous les musées dédiés: CREATIVITY MUSEUM, CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, AQUARIUM OF THE BAY, SF ZOO, etc...

Le plus sympa reste quand même d’aller à la plage au grand air, on fait du cerf-volant et des chateaux de sable, faute de pouvoir se baigner car l’eau est à 16 degrés, le courant est dingue et c’est très “sharky” (plein de requins).
