Tolkien was a devout Christian, religious thinker and author of The Lord of the Rings and its prequel, The Hobbit. Christian themes such as darkness and light, mercy and justice, fellowship, authority, repentance, free will and sacrifice are found throughout Tolkien’s epic.

‘Long after, but still very long ago, there lived by the banks of the Great River on the edge of Wilderland a clever-handed and quiet-footed little people. I guess they were of hobbit- kind; akin to the fathers of the fathers of the Stoors, for they loved the River, and often swam in it, or made little boats of reeds.
Gandalf on the hobbit-kind on the Anduin, a race Sméagol and Déagol belonged to. Fellowship of the Ring, The Shadow of the Past.

So Hobbits are rodents, right? That’s what we’re going with?
But there’s three types of Hobbits, so let’s have fun with that
So there’s the Harfoot, which is like, the common hobbit. These boys are mice, with long fluffy ears, scruffy hair, fur covering their bodies, long tails with a little tuft at the end, and a small snout with whiskers.
Then there’s the Stoor’s which is what Gollum was. These boys are otters, with longer bodies, more claw like hands, thicker and flatter tails, more water proof fur, and webbed feet.
Then there’s the Fallohides. These boys are squirrels, clawed hands made for climbing, smaller feet but more flexible, longer bushier tail, curvier body, and sharper reflexes.
The other races can barely tell the differences between the three boys, but they will take offense if you mix them up

Digital is definitely still a newer thing for me but it's always fun to experiment and hey that's what a drawing challenge month is for isn't it!!
Let me know what you think about this little scene.

“The Stoors lingered long by the banks of the Great River Anduin, and were less shy of Men. They came west after the Harfoots and followed the course of the Loudwater southwards; and there many of them long dwelt between Tharbad and the borders of Dunland before they moved north again.” ~ Prologue, Concerning Hobbits, The Fellowship of the Ring [Deagol and Sméagol on the river]

So hobbits are furry lil guys? Little rodent fellows.
They also have very dense fur, protecting them against both cold climates, and solar heat.
But as most people with chinchillas know, dense fur also means that you shouldn’t get wet, as it will trap the water and start to mold
What I’m saying here is, hobbits take dust baths

the fact there is a scottish legend about the islands of orkney, shetland, iceland & faroe being created from some primordial snake monster in northern scotland is, frankly, one of the best stories to come out of there
